The reading will take place at 2 p.m. because this was the hour that the Declaration of Independence was officially adopted in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776. The reading at Hopewell marks the hour of America’s 243rd birthday. The first public reading of the Declaration of Independence in Berks County was on July 8, 1776. The document was read publicly in villages throughout the area. Ironmaster and founder of Hopewell Furnace Mark Bird was brother-in-law to two signers of the Declaration, George Ross and James Wilson. At Hopewell, the principal reader of the document will be playwright and actress Christine Emmert. Emmert wrote, directed and starred in the play “From Out of the Fiery Furnace,” which is the story about how a Hopewell stove changed the life of one woman. Other readers will include Edie Shean-Hammond, a member of the Friends and a past

Hopewell superintendent. “Francine Black from the Berks Opera Company and her granddaughter, Isabella, will perform patriotic music,” Shean-Hammond noted. The program will take place on the porch of the Ironmaster’s Mansion. Attendees should bring blankets or lawn chairs for seating. “We encourage people to get there at 1:30 p.m. because they have to travel down the hill to the mansion,” said Shean-Hammond, noting that the area is shaded. “It’s the coolest place in the park.” The furnace site will be open throughout the day and will be staffed by costumed interpreters. “There will be quilting demonstrations and other activities in the village,” Shean-Hammond added. “There will be plenty to see and do.” Hopewell Furnace is located 5 miles south of Birdsboro, off Route 345. Church Farm School in Exton welcomed baby boomers, seniors and caregivers for the 16th annual Chester County 50plus EXPO on June 5. The free, one-day event, which provided information and resources for area residents age 50 and up, was hosted by OLP Events. More than 80 exhibitors displayed products and services in travel, housing, medical services, nutrition, home improvements, finances and health care. Attendees were eligible for door prizes and took advantage of free health screenings for cholesterol, blood pressure, genetic disease predispositions and more. The onstage entertainment

and presentations began with Anthony W. Luker, from the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General, who focused on the latest phone scams. Luker addressed the prevalence of “call spoofing,” where scammers can program their calls to show up as a local number - even including the name of a recognizable company - on the recipient’s caller ID. David Johnson, CHC advocate at CARIE, provided an overview of Community HealthChoices, Pennsylvania’s new, mandatory managed-care program for people enrolled in both Medicare and Medicaid. The program was introduced in Bucks, Chester,

Delaware and Philadelphia counties in January. Johnson talked about the changes CHC brings and how to access its benefits, as well as consumers’ rights under the new program. Jena Wood, ShopRite registered dietitian, outlined how to incorporate the MIND Diet into everyday eating patterns. The diet - which includes whole grains, lean meats and fish, nuts, leafy greens, and berries - is designed to influence brain health and cognitive function. Senior living was a well-represented topic on the EXPO floor, and Lindsey Poeth with Oasis Senior Advisors Mainline outlined the differences between

Celtic Concert from pg 1 music from the Celtic world Ireland, Scotland and even parts of northern England,” Kochel stated. “ We throw in some American folk music as well. About half of our set tends to be instrumental and half vocals. This past year, I had nine pieces that I wrote myself; five or six of them will make it into the set in Honey Brook.” Kochel explained that the name of the band comes from Celtic knots that are made of interconnected loops. Likewise, he said, the talents of the band members are intertwined to form each piece of music. “Celtic knotwork is a particular stylized art form in the lands of Scotland and Ireland where

cords and lines are interwoven with each other,” he said, noting that he learned about the artwork during a 1987 visit to Ireland. “If you trace the lines, they go through these convolutions, but they start again, and they never end.” He said that during the visit to Ireland, he also became interested in Celtic music and learned how to play the Irish drum. Kochel said that audiences will enjoy the wide range of Celtic music that the band performs, including waltzes, jigs, and reels. “The thing I like about Celtic folk music is that it is exciting and entertaining, but it covers the full range of emotions,” he said. “One of our

songs is about the Irish horse races in Galway. Another one is about immigration - a brother taking a sister to the station to see her off to America, knowing he’ll never see her again. There will also be an a capella song; Victoria and I will sing a duet together.” Kochel added that audience members of all ages will enjoy the show in Honey Brook, where the band is performing for the first time. “ We will have different kinds of pieces that lend themselves to dancing, and we will encourage the audience to do that,” he said. “I have learned to sing a lot of these songs by listening to the Irish and Scottish people

The BLI was originally developed by Arthur L. Piccone of Kingston in 1995-96 during his year as PBA president to strengthen the PBA’s ongoing efforts to recruit and develop leaders of the association. The first chair of the institute, Gretchen A. Mundorff of Connellsville, re-launched the BLI when she became the 2010-11 president of the PBA. Its current purpose is to inform participants on the day-today operations, governance, resources, and staffing of the association, as well as to provide introductions to its various leadership opportunities.

According to event co-chair Rick Thomson, the Banner Brass ensemble from the Reading Buccaneers will provide pre-show entertainment starting at 6:45 p.m. The United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps “The Commandant’s Own” will kick off the show with an exhibition performance at 7 p.m. “The United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps is renowned around the world for their esprit de corps, as they represent both the Marine Corps and the country. That has earned them the title of ‘The Commandant’s Own,’” Thomson remarked. After the exhibition, the five competing corps will perform. They will be evaluated by a panel of judges in the categories of Visual, Music, and Effect and various subcategories. Cash prizes will be given to the corps for their placements, with special awards for High Brass score, High Percussion score, High Visual score, Best Color Guard, and Best Drum Major. “What it comes down to is how well is the show designed, how well the performers perform the

show, and how well the performers execute within the brass, percussion, and color guard ensembles,” Thomson explained. He noted that drum corps are different from marching bands because they do not use woodwinds. “This produces a distinctive full and bold sound. And since drum corps spend an entire season performing a single show, their execution level is quite high,” Thomson added. “This leads to the description of drum corps as ‘marching bands on steroids.’” Also unlike most marching bands, membership is not restricted to high school or college students. Drum corps members can range in age from early teens to over 50, although Thomson noted that over the years, the average age of many all-age corps has lowered. “Clearly, one of the criteria is for members to be able to handle the rigors of today’s fast-paced marching and the overall physical and time demands of practice and performing,” he said. The competition will feature drum corps from four states, including Atlanta CV from

Atlanta; the Bushwackers from Princeton, N.J.; the Skyliners from Scranton; the White Sabers from Dansville, N.Y.; and the Buccaneers. The performances will wrap up with the Reading Buccaneer Alumni Corps and the Hawthorne Caballeros Alumni Corps. Thomson explained that the alumni corps offer opportunities for folks to participate without the stress and time-consuming schedule of a competitive group. After a drum major retreat and awards ceremony, the event is expected to conclude by 10 p.m. There is a cost to attend the show, with separate prices set for reserved seats and for general admission. Handicapped-accessible seating will be available. The Hempfield Band Boosters Club and the Reading Buccaneers will share in the proceeds from the show, and the boosters will sell concessions. DCA is committed to ensuring the safety of performers and spectators; because the event will take place outdoors, the directors and judges will pay close attention to weather conditions. The show will go on in light to moderate rain, as the tickets indicate the show is a rain-orshine event. In the event of a downpour, the show will be stopped until conditions improve, but DCA rules require that if there is lightning within a specified distance of the stadium, the show will halt and the stands will be emptied. For more information and to purchase tickets, readers may visit www.readingbuccaneers.org /theclassic.

The DCA World Champion Reading Buccaneers, along with the Hempfield Band Boosters Club, will host The Classic - A Drum & Bugle Corps Competition at Hempfield High School’s stadium on July 6.

Pennsylvania’s 12 Heritage Areas, spanning 57 of the commonwealth’s counties, will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the program this summer, offering a wide range of enjoyable activities and adventures through the state’s rich history. The businesses, nonprofit organizations, and community leaders committed to preserving Pennsylvania’s unique historic and cultural resources encourage tourists with varying interests to visit one or more of the areas. There, they will have the opportunity to experience some of the most important and pivotal actions, which have contributed to the nation’s formation and growth. The Heritage Areas Program is a national model that encompasses almost every major historical site, population center, and tourist attraction that Pennsylvania has to offer. It is a comprehensive, multi-faceted regional strategic initiative to conserve and enhance key resources and promote each region’s heritage for tourism development.

From an economic perspective, Pennsylvania consistently ranks near the top of states attracting cultural heritage visitors. In 2014, tourists spent an estimated 7.5 million days and nights in Pennsylvania’s Heritage Areas, purchasing more than $2 billion worth of goods and services. Seventy percent of this spending is purely reliant on heritage-related attractions. The 12 Heritage Areas are managed separately and are as unique as the history, resources, and communities they work to preserve, enhance, and grow. Through partnerships and grass-roots planning efforts of a diverse group of leaders, the historic, cultural, natural, and scenic and recreation resources are preserved and developed to strengthen regional economies with a goal of increasing tourism, creating new jobs and developing investment opportunities. To find out more about the 12 heritage areas, readers may visit www.heritagepa.com.

When building campfires, several precautionary measures can ensure a safe time is had by all. Campground and other areas will post if the conditions are safe for a fire. Campers should heed all signs and not ignite a campfire if posted warnings say it is too dry and unsafe to do so. Campers should choose the right location by looking around and up to make sure that the fire will be in a safe location away from low-hanging branches or brush. A radius of at least eight to 10 feet around the fire should be clear of tents, food, chairs, and other items. To prepare a site, a small pit should be dug in which the fire can be housed. A ring of stones should be placed around the pit. Fuel should be added only as needed. The fire should be kept at a manageable size and height. Campers should not let it grow just to impress fellow campers, as it can spread and become a problem. Campers should beware of the duff, which is a layer of decomposing wood material that lies between pine needles and dirt on the forest floor. It is highly flammable, and some mistake it for dirt. Campers should be aware of duff near the campsite and extinguish any embers promptly. Campers should maintain a close watch and make sure at least one person is always tending to the campfire. Children and pets should be kept away. Campers should set a proper distance for pets and young children who may not understand the dangers of fire. The fire should be extinguished properly. A shovel and water should be kept nearby to drown the fire and embers. Campers should mix the ashes and water again to catch anything that may be smoldering. Water, dirt, or sand should continue to be added and stirred with a shovel until all material is cool. A former campfire should never be left hot. A decent perimeter should be checked around the campfire to ensure that no stray embers escaped. Campfires are an enjoyable part of the overall camping or outdoor wilderness experience. Safety is essential to help prevent forest fires and/or injuries.

Emergency Management Accreditation Renewed

KPB Receives $10,000 Grant Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful (KPB) received a $10,000 grant from Keep America Beautiful to continue its work with the Keep America Beautiful Cigarette Litter Prevention Program (CLPP), the nation’s largest program aimed at reducing cigarette

litter. This is the ninth year that KPB received funding from the national organization. Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful will partner with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) focusing on Pennsylvania State See KPB pg 11

ARRIVING LATE?

The Chester County Department of Emergency Services received confirmation that it remains nationally accredited by the Emergency Management Accreditation Program (EMAP)

for a further five-year period. According to the Chester County Department of Emergency Services, EMAP is the only accreditation process for emergency management programs in

the nation, and Chester County was the first county in the state to achieve full accreditation for its emergency management program in 2014. EMAP accreditation recognizes the ability of emergency management programs to bring together personnel, resources, and communications from a variety of agencies and organizations in preparation for and in response to an emergency. The proven ability to measure these capabilities is also a key part of the EMAP accreditation. The EMAP process evaluates emergency management programs on compliance with

requirements in 16 areas, including planning, resource management, training, exercises, evaluations and corrective actions, and communications and warnings. To maintain accreditation, Chester County had to once again demonstrate through selfassessment, documentation, and peer assessment verification that its program meets the Emergency Management Standard set forth by EMAP. The program accreditation managers were Emergency Management Department staff members Andrew Thurston and Thaddeus Kavanagh.

The Chester County Department of Emergency Services has announced it continues to be nationally accredited by the Emergency Management Accreditation Program (EMAP). Celebrating the accreditation renewal were (from left) County Commissioner Terence Farrell; Thaddeus Kavanagh, training and exercise coordinator for emergency management; County Commissioner Michelle Kichline; Mike Murphy, director of Chester County Department of Emergency Services; Bill Turner, deputy director for emergency management; and County Commissioner Kathi Cozzone.

KPB from pg 10 Parks with recreational lakes and tributaries to the Delaware River and Bay. The parks included in the 2019 CLPP grant are Benjamin Rush, Nockamixion, Ridley Creek, and Tyler state parks. To combat against litter, the program advocates that participating communities use four approaches: encourage enforcement of litter laws, including cigarette litter; raise awareness about the issue; place ash receptacles in places like entrances to public buildings; and distribute portable ashtrays to smokers. In 2018, Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful also collaborated with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) to implement the CLPP program at Point State Park, Linn Run, Laurel Summit, Laurel Ridge, Oil Creek, and Yellow Creek state parks, all of which offer recreational lakes, whitewater rafting, canoeing, and kayaking as well as and thousands of miles of hiking trails. The final scan, performed after the installation of ash receptacles, education implementation, and the distribution of portable ashtrays, documented a reduction rate of 81 percent.
