Stories and canines featured at Birdsboro library

TheBoone Area Library in Birdsboro is the place to be on Fridays, when children can listen to a story read aloud by a Daniel Boone Area School District teacher as well as visit with a certified therapy dog.

Stories With Teachers began on June 9 and will run through July 28, beginning at 11:30 a.m. Following the story, an art or STEM activity is offered. The program is recommended for children ages 5 to 12, and registration is not required.

On June 16, the guest reader was teacher Pat Smith, who read “Do Not Take Your Dragon to Dinner” by Julie Gassman. After the story and project, Susan Goodling brought Charley the dog to the library so that children could read to him.

TVHS sets colorful run to benefit Four Diamonds

On Saturday, July 15, members of the Twin Valley High School (TVHS) Mini-THON Club will present the second annual TVHS Mini-THON 5K and kids’ fun run/walk, during which participants will be doused with color. Proceeds will benefit Four Diamonds, a nonprofit organization that has a mission to raise money to conquer childhood cancer.

Registration will open at 10:30 a.m.

at the TVHS Fitness Center, and there will be a 2K kids’ run/walk beginning at 11 a.m., followed by a 5K walk/run at 11:30 a.m.

The fundraiser, designed to mimic Penn State’s colorful THON 5K, will take place on the campus of TVHS and Twin Valley Middle School. “The courses will be clearly marked with arrows, and people will be directing racers on which way they need to run,” explained event coordinator Chelsea Hurley, who will be a TVHS senior this fall

you can pet anywhere. You can read to him and show him pictures, and after the books are done, you can play with him and his toys.”

“This is his first time (at the Boone Area Library); he is so happy to be here,” added Goodling, a former teacher in the Daniel Boone Area School District.

She explained that Charley always wears a banana indicating that he is a KPETS dog, which means he has been certified with Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services.

The idea to train Charley to become a therapy dog came after Goodling visited Godfrey’s Welcome to Dogdom in Mohnton.

“Charley was walking around, and they told us he would make a good therapy dog. They had two dogs at the time who went through KPETS,” she said. “He had to go to an orientation with other dogs, and he automatically flunked because he barked (at the other dogs, and) they are not

allowed to bark. So, we went back and did some training and practice, and he (eventually) passed all of his tests.”

Since earning his certification, Charley has visited libraries throughout the Berks County Library System, including Spring Township and West LawnWyomissing Hills. “He became a therapy dog right before COVID hit and he didn’t get to do many things (at first) because everything was closed down,” said Goodling. “He did stress release for accountants during tax season. He went to the Highlands (at Wyomissing) for employee stress relief. They took him through the whole Highlands facility, and he got to meet everybody.”

Charley, along with his older sister, Jordie, are bichpoos, a mixed breed that is a cross of a poodle and a bichon frisé. Goodling noted both Charley and Jordie enjoy having children read books to them and

Honey Brook Speedway to host Keystone

All the excitement of racing can be found locally at the Honey Brook Speedway, where youths ranging in age from 5 to 16 compete while driving quarter midget race cars.

Those interested in learning more about the sport are encouraged to attend the Keystone Invitational, which will take place at the speedway on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 7, 8 and 9. A complete schedule for the event can be found at www.facebook.com/honeybrook speedway.

“I think (attending the Keystone Invitational) would be a great taster for people interested in getting their kids involved,” said Jen Snyder, whose sons compete at the track. “There are multiple families there to talk about racing with someone who is interested.”

While preregistration is closed, walk-ins will also be welcome. Drivers are required to be members of the United States Auto Club (USAC) to participate. “It’s a unique event. You get to race four times. It gives the most seat time to a child already racing,” Snyder pointed out.

and is the co-overall of the TVHS Mini-THON Club. “The course mostly consists of paved areas and a few grassy areas all within campus borders. The kids’ run is all on the high school campus and is completely paved.”

As part of the fun, participants will be doused with color at four or more points throughout the course during both the kids’ and 5K run/walks.

TVHS Mini-THON members and officers plan the event and are present on race day even though school is not in session. “There is a group of dedicated students who (donate) their time to help fight pediatric cancer,” Chelsea said.

Anyone can attend the race even if they are not participating as runners or walkers. “There will be plenty of places to cheer on racers, especially as they cross the finish line and are doused with color,” Chelsea said. “Anyone can donate whether they would like to run the race or not; all donations are accepted.”

“Last year, there were around 80 participants, and we were able to raise $1,931 - all for the kids,” Chelsea added.

The goal of the TVHS MiniTHON Club, led by adviser Lance Chappelle, is to raise funds for Four Diamonds. The main fundraiser of the student-run club is its Mini-THON, which is a dance marathon modeled after the Penn State THON that raises money for families with children being treated for cancer at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital.

Club members also hold other fundraisers throughout the year, including a holiday vendor sale and movie nights. During commencement ceremonies for the Class of 2023, TVHS principal Bill Clements reported that the club raised more than $53,000 during the 2022-23 school year. For example, Charley has dressed as Paddington bear and as a unicorn. For his visit to the Boone Area Library, he was dressed as a duck in honor of the Birdsboro Street Fair and Duck Derby.

Nonreaders enjoy visiting with him as well. “When he goes to

libraries, he sometimes doesn’t have readers, so they show him how to pick up and put away toys, but he sure does love stories,” Goodling said.

The Honey Brook Speedway began in 1958 as the Doylestown Quarter Midget Club (DQMC), located in Doylestown, and moved to the Honey Brook location in the early 1980s. Races are held on Sundays at noon. Admission is free and open to the public.

Arrive and Drive events are also offered throughout the race season, offering opportunities for youths ages 5 to 13 to try the sport. The cars are provided, as well as safety equipment, including a helmet, gloves, a race suit, arm restraints, a neck brace and seat belts. A fee is charged for 10 laps around the track.

“We attended an Arrive and Drive (last) August and have been involved ever since,” Snyder stated.

Those who want to become involved in the sport must first purchase a car, which can be used for a number of years depending on the child’s growth. “It is an upfront cost. ... And then you pay to drive as little or as much as you want. If you travel more,

it creates cost,” Snyder said. “It’s comparable (in cost to other sports). You can keep the same car.”

Snyder added that the track may potentially be removed from Honey Brook since the property was purchased. “We are working to develop a relationship (with the developer) to stay at our current location,” she stated.

Those affiliated with the track hope that the facility will remain where it is because its presence is a boost to the local economy. “All fuel is required to be purchased by the local gas station in Honey Brook,” noted Snyder. “Races attract people from out of town that come to enjoy the local restaurants

and venues in the area. Track meetings are held monthly at the Waynebrook Inn in Honey Brook along with our yearly banquet.”

“The Honey Brook Speedway has become a landmark for the local community,” she added.
