Little Free Library Offers Books For All By Francine Fulton
Ellyn Honey has created a Little Free Library located in the parking lot of Honey Spas in Mohnton. Local residents are invited to take a book or give a book.
Combining her artistic creativity and her love of reading, Ellyn Honey has created a Little Free Library filled with free books for adults, youths and children. The library is located at 3226 Morgantown Road, Mohnton, in the parking lot of Honey Spas, where Honey serves as operations manager. As part of the Little Free Library program, local residents are invited to take a book or donate a book. Each book in Honey’s library is labeled, “Always a Gift. Never for Sale.” There is also a guest book located inside the box that visitors may sign. Honey said she has seen similar libraries in her travels and wanted to create one of her own. “I saw one in Virginia in a national park type of place (and) I am a big fan of reading,” she

said. “I created a Facebook page for the library, and I put (information) on the local Facebook pages like In Twin Valley and Robeson Residents.” Initially, Honey filled the box with books from her own collection. “I didn’t have children’s books because my children are grown, so I went online and I bought some children’s books (for the library),” she said, noting other books have been donated by friends and employees. She said the box was put into place several weeks ago, when the coronavirus pandemic forced all local libraries to close by state mandate. The Little Free Library provides an alternative source for readers to find free books. Although the box is open 24 hours a day, those who have books to donate are asked to bring them into the showroom if the building is open. Honey will

Local artist Anna Carter of Rose River Way Studio will offer an online watercolor class on Saturday, July 11, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. During the live virtual workshop, participants will be able to paint along with Carter and will be able to interact through a live chat box. Although the workshop is open to adults, it especially intended for local senior citizens. “I know that many organizations are starting to open up in the green phase, but I also see that the assisted living facilities and the elderly still need to be very careful in this time,” Carter stated. “As such, I want this virtual workshop to be a fun and relaxing event that families can do together with their elderly relatives, even from a distance.” Carter has been in touch with local facilities that house senior citizens encouraging the residents to participate. “I am contacting several retirement communities and assisted living
Now more than ever, thanks to jobs and wages lost while the stay-at-home order was in place, resources for people experiencing homelessness or at risk of losing their homes are in demand. Thankfully, Good Samaritan Services (GSS), which serves individuals and families in Lancaster and Chester counties who have poverty-related needs, is prepared to help.
“We provide a wide spectrum of services that are customizable to each individual or family at whatever place they are at in their journey to stability,” said Shadoe Settle, GSS development and communications coordinator. “Our services are always expanding. Right now, we provide emergency shelter, residential housing, and housing support services to men, women, and families in Lancaster and Chester counties. Serving men is a new ability in Lancaster County, and we are very excited about it.” Although the need for the services provided by GSS has increased, the organization has been able to keep the lives of its existing participants stable, thanks to support from the community. “Our ability to provide support and guidance See Golf Outing pg 3

then sanitize and stamp them before placing them in the library. If the business is not open, the books can be left in the box and Honey will take care of cleaning them, stamping them and putting them back in the box. “If someone takes a book and does not return it, that’s fine. That’s what it’s here for,” she stated. “I would rather have somebody reading than not.” The library structure, which was built by Honey Spas employee David Moody, See Little Free Library pg 3

here in our community. The 2019 EPC Golf Outing raised $20,000, and the goal this year is to meet or surpass that total with the help of golfers and sponsors, Hillegas said. The 13th annual EPC Golf Outing will be held on Friday, Sept. 25, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville. Tee times of 7 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. are available. The event had initially been planned for June. “Like many other events this year, we were faced with the decision to cancel or reschedule our event, Hillegas commented. “We know how much this event impacts families right here in our Lancaster County and Chester County communities, so we made the decision to reschedule the June outing for September. The health and safety of our golfers and volunteers was the main driving force behind this decision, and we look forward to what a fall golf outing for this event will look like. The Tee It Forward contest hole that was introduced last year will be continued. Hillegas noted that while this year’s event will include bag lunches from Trio Bar and Grill, chicken barbecue from Peters’ BBQ will also be available. Chicken barbecue had been a feature of the EPC Golf Outings a few years ago, and Hillegas and her team are pleased to bring it back. For more information about the EPC Golf Outing, to register to play, or to sponsor the event, readers may visit www.epcgolfouting.com. As with other organizations, the delivery of services had to change, requiring flexibility from both the GSS team members and participants. GSS continued to provide emergency shelter and residential housing services while maintaining state-issued safety requirements and conducting cautious intakes for new clients. GSS family resource coordinators met with participants via Zoom, FaceTime, WhatsApp, and other virtualmeeting software to provide housing support services. The financial impact of COVID-19 will be felt for a long time to come, and GSS expects the need for its services to increase, Settle said. The nonprofit organization depends on donations and fundraisers to operate. One such fundraiser is the golf outing hosted by Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. In celebration of National Pollinator Week, the Giant Company recently announced it has completed a 7-acre pollinator-friendly solar field at its corporate headquarters at 1149 Harrisburg Pike in Carlisle. This initiative aims to create a synergistic environment, which contributes both to clean energy and support for bee and pollinator populations needed within the agriculture industry. Honey bees pollinate $15 billion worth of food crops in the United States each year, yet populations have been experiencing a decline for more than three decades, the Giant Company reported. Beekeepers across the United States lost an estimated 40.7% of their honey bee colonies from April 2018 to April 2019, according to the latest annual nationwide survey conducted by the University of Maryland-led nonprofit Bee Informed Partnership. A pollinator field provides Giant with an opportunity to educate team members, customers and the community about the role bees play in getting food onto their family’s table, noted Nicholas Bertram, president of the Giant Company. Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture deputy secretary Cheryl Cook added that nearly one-third of the nation’s food supply depends on pollinators, making bees an essential part of the food supply chain and ecosystem. The Giant Company has also been selected as the first grocery retailer and first Pennsylvania participant to take part in the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s InSPIRE study, where scientists measure and track the performance of the pollinatorfriendly ground cover for applications to future solar energy projects. In addition to the benefits of the plants, the new solar array coupled with the one currently installed on the roof of the Giant Company headquarters will reduce 4.5 million pounds of carbon dioxide in the environment and generate enough power for the entire building. Native seed mixes provided by Ernst Conservation Seeds will act as a vegetative solution to beautify the site and provide valuable ecological functions. The Giant Company hopes the native meadow established will create a habitat for pollinators, birds and other small wildlife while improving the quality of the soil beneath it, reducing runoff and creating an attractive backdrop

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) is now offering free tax drop-offs through Wednesday, July 15, at the Transformation Center, 645 E. Lincoln Highway, Coatesville, which will operate as Rapid Drop-Off site. Social distancing restrictions will be in place at the site, including the required wearing of masks for all customers. The Rapid Drop-Off process is different from the traditional process and is designed to minimize interaction between volunteers and customers. Taxpayers should come to the site with photo identifications for the primary and secondary taxpayers, social security cards for everyone on the return, and all other forms, including W-2s, 1099 forms, etc. Once at the site, they will be asked to complete intake forms and place all information into an envelope that will be provided. A VITA volunteer will copy all information and return all originals. At a later time, a volunteer will review the return over the phone. When everything is complete and correct, it will be efiled, and an electronic copy of the return will be made available upon request. Since this is a drop-off situation, there is no guarantee on the turnaround time for returns. Volunteers will attempt to prioritize those returns that must be completed by the deadline on July 15. Those who would like their return to be e-filed before the deadline should bring the information before Saturday, July 11, if possible. For those who are getting a refund or do not owe the IRS any
