COMMUNITYCOURIER - Morgantown/Honey Brook Edition -

The plot of “High School Musical” focuses on two teenagers - Troy Bolton, played by Noah Durling, and Gabriella Montez, played by Emily Andersen - who have never tried out to be in a show before. Gabriella is a shy, geeky math whiz, and Troy is a basketball star. “The (campers, who are ages 10 to 18) have grown up watching (‘High School Musical’) and listening to the music,” shared Huyard. “The characters are relatable.” The story opens when Troy and Gabriella meet at a ski lodge on New Year’s Eve. They sing karaoke together and exchange phone numbers. When the students return to school, Troy notices Gabriella in his homeroom and learns that she has transferred to East High School. Both decide to try out for parts in the school musical, and, despite a few mishaps, both are offered callbacks for the lead characters. At this point, Sharpay Evans, who will be played by Annika Locke, and her twin brother, Ryan Evans, played by Ethan Sommers, decide to interfere with the auditions and eliminate competition for the leading roles they aspire to fill. The show boasts 10 songs, many which are high in energy. Showstopping numbers include “Stick to the Status Quo” and “Breaking Free,” which will feature the two leads joined by the entire company, along with “We’re All in This Together.” Although campers are familiar with the music, Huyard noted that some of the songs are not easy. “The boys have to sing very high and the girls low,” said Huyard. “For developing voices, that can be challenging.” Hannah Stone will serve as music director for the show, and Cavod instructor Julie Haney will choreograph the dance numbers. Huyard chose the Disney Channel favorite for a number of reasons. Among them, he likes how the musical delves beyond the surface of high school life. “It pokes fun at all the high school stereotypes,” said Huyard, referencing jocks, geeks, and those who have enthusiasm for music and theater. “As you go deeper, there’s more than that. There are (students) who feel they have to fit into this one group, but this show explores how you can be a combination of things,” he explained. “I related to that in high school.” For those unfamiliar with the show, Huyard described it as “Hairspray,” “Grease,” and “Footloose” smashed together. “It’s a sanitized Disney version of that,” he said. Tickets, which are discounted for students age 17 and under, may be purchased in advance at https://cavod.org or by calling 717-354-3355. Tickets may also be available at the door.

Recognizing June 24 as the 100th anniversary of Pennsylvania’s decision to pass the 19th Amendment, Chester County Commissioners Michelle Kichline and Terence Farrell celebrated with women who are at least 100 years old and who were infants in the year the equal rights decision was made. On June 24, 1919, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania voted in favor of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, providing that the right to vote “shall not be denied or abridged by the

United States or by any State on account of sex.” Today, Chester County has nearly 180,000 registered female voters, representing 51.5 percent of the county’s total voter registration number. Of the county’s current elected positions - commissioners and row officers - women outnumber men two to one, and the county’s president judge is a woman. Chester County has strong historical connections to the lobbying campaign by suffragists. The county was the site of the first Pennsylvania women’s rights convention in 1852, and Chester County was the only county in southeastern Pennsylvania to support the (unsuccessful) state referendum in 1915 to give women the right to vote. To promote that unsuccessful referendum, Katharine Wentworth Ruschenberger of Tredyffrin Township commissioned a near-replica of the Liberty Bell, which became known as the Justice Bell. A flatbed truck carried the Justice Bell, with its bronze clapper silenced by chains (to symbolize women’s lack of an electoral vote), to all 67 Pennsylvania counties before it returned to its home in West Chester at the courthouse. The clapper of the Justice Bell was finally unchained and rang out in September 1920 after the 19th Amendment was ratified.

Recognizing June 24 as the 100th anniversary of Pennsylvania’s decision to pass the 19th Amendment, Chester County Commissioners Terence Farrell (standing, left) and Michelle Kichline (standing, right) celebrated with women who are at least 100 years old and who were infants when the equal rights decision was made.

The Chester County Department of Open Space Preservation and the Agricultural Land Preservation Board are accepting applications for two competitive farm preservation programs funded by the Chester County commissioners, the Chester County Farmland Preservation Program and the Chester County Challenge Grant Program. To date, more than 500 farms totaling more than 40,000 acres have been preserved in Chester County through these programs. Both programs offer funds to qualifying Chester County farm owners who are interested in preserving their agricultural lands. The county pays farm

owners for their development rights in exchange for a permanent agricultural conservation easement on the property. The owner still owns the land and can sell or pass it on to the next generation as long as it remains in agriculture. Farms with 10 acres or more are eligible for both programs if they are adjacent to other permanently preserved land. For farms not adjacent to permanently preserved land, the acreage minimum is 50 acres for the Farmland Preservation Program and 25 acres for the Challenge Grant Program. The application deadline for both programs is Thursday, Aug. 1.

For more information, questions, applications and program guidelines, readers may visit www.chesco.org/open space, contact Geoff Shellington at 610-344-6504 or gshellington@chesco.org or visit the Department of Open Space Preservation at the Chester County Government Services Center, Suite 390, 601 Westtown Road, West Chester. enjoy fellowship before and after services. Television monitors in the building allow people to view a live stream of the service. According to pastor David Longenecker, Strong Faith Family Church began as a small group Bible study with five people in August of 2006. In its first year, the church grew from five people to more than 60, and services were moved to Wagontown Fire Company. The church had been meeting at King’s Highway for the past three years before moving into the new facility in the fall of 2018. Before the move, a team of church volunteers had to set up chairs in the school prior to each Sunday service and set up makeshift classrooms in the school gym. “The dividers that now create the walls around the sanctuary (here) were what we used to create children’s classroom in the elementary school,” Longenecker stated. “It would take us about two hours to set up (at the school). For our first service (here), we were up and running in five minutes. It was amazing.” All the chairs and educational materials used at the school were brought over to the new church office space. “They gave us one month to come in, and we built a stage and drum surround and did the planning and we got everything ready and prepared,” Longenecker said. The church facility also includes a Growth Track classroom, where members learn about their purpose in the church. “The Growth Track is made up of four steps. Lesson one gives people the things really need to know as (they start)

their walk with God. The second lesson gives people an introduction to the church,” Longenecker explained. “Step three is a discovery process. (People) take some personality tests and spiritual gift tests and start discovering things about the way God has designed them. The fourth step shows them some of the values of our church and the different areas of service. We don’t want you serving where we have a need. We want you to serve where God wired you to serve. We want you in a place of your passions.” The church also offers small groups that that meet in members’ homes. “As things begin to grow and flourish, a small group can turn into a ministry in the church,” Longenecker said. The church recently formed a Service Team, which performs community service projects. So far, the team did yard work for a woman who was recently widowed, and it picked up trash in the office complex where the church is located. “(The congregation members) have a heart for each other,” Longenecker remarked. “The congregation is very mixed and diverse. We go from young to old to black to white, but we never set up to do that. Relationships keep forming and people keep loving each other, and it’s been really cool to see.” Strong Faith Family Church holds a Sunday service at 10:30 a.m. All are welcome to attend. Signs will direct visitors to the correct office building. For more information, readers may call 610-400-1188 or visit www.strongfaithchurch.com or www.facebook.com/StrongFaith.

George Weaver, a member of the New Holland Band and one of the organizers of the annual New Holland Antique Car, Gas Engine, and Tractor Show, keeps up with happenings in the world of antique cars. “The premier auction (in the United States) is held in (Scottsdale,) Arizona, in January,” said Weaver, referencing the BarrettJackson Auction. “The 1969 Camaro has taken off the last three years,” noted Weaver, adding that the 1967 Camaro used to be one of the more popular cars. “(The 1969) has jumped out ahead of the 1967, and the ’69 is now the hot one.” The 50th anniversary of cars built in 1969 will be the theme for the 38th annual car show, which will be held in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, 400 E. Jackson St., New Holland, on Sunday, July 14. The field will open for car parking at 9 a.m. “(The model year) 1969, to me, was the end of an era,” commented Steve Loewen, who has worked to organize the show since its inception. “In the 1970s, everything changed.”

Between 9 a.m. and noon, vintage cars will be lined up on the show field, while hit-and-miss engines and vintage tractors will be on view in the park. Antique tractors and hit-and-miss engines that are not being judged may be displayed free of charge. Cars will be judged in more than 30 classes. Pieter Hegeman II, a member of the Susquehanna Valley Camaro Club, will bring his 1969 Z28 Camaro with a General Motors Crossram engine that he purchased in Maryland 20 years ago. “They only made 107 of (these cars with the Crossram),” said Hegeman, “and there are less than 40 of them known to exist (at this time).” Hegemen explained that the engine had to be special ordered for the car and installed at the dealership. Because the cars were designed for racing, few have survived. Hegeman likes to tell the story of meeting one of the original designers, Jon Moss, developer of the Crossram motor, at a Super Chevy event at Maple Grove Dragway. “(Jon Moss) talked to me and said, ‘This is the real deal,’” recalled

Hegeman. “I said, ‘I assumed it was,’ (but) I didn’t know who he was,” said Hegeman, who later obtained several autographs from Moss. Hegeman complimented Weaver and Loewen on how smoothly the show is organized and run. John Riggs of New Providence plans to bring his 1937 Chevy pickup that he converted to a street rod to the show. “My wife, Dorothy, found me (the truck) along the highway 12 years ago,” said Riggs. “She figured I would wait until I retired to (convert it).” Riggs purchased the truck around 2007, and he tore the frame off the next year. An experienced mechanic, Riggs completed the conversion around 2014 with help from his son and friends. “It’s never done,” said Riggs with a chuckle. Finished or not, Riggs’ truck has won several awards, including two victories at the Dover Southern Delaware Street Rod Association show. The show is presented in partnership with the New Holland Band, and it benefits the band, the Friends of the ELANCO Library, and the park it is held in. At noon, the New Holland Combo Band will perform, and at 1:30 p.m., the New Holland Swing Band will perform.

Car Show from pg 1 items collected during the show will be delivered to the food bank. Gift bags and dash plaques will be given to the first 100 vehicles. Trophies will be given out in 14 categories, including Best of Show; Fan Favorite, which is voted on by the spectators; Best Import; and Best Car from the 1940s to the 1950s, the 1950s to the 1960s, and so on. There will also be an award for the vehicle that traveled the farthest to the show. Organizers note that the event is family-friendly and will offer activities for children and adults. “We’re having someone come and do face painting,” said Carol Kinkaid, a member of the car show committee, noting there will also be a silent auction and a Chinese auction. “We’ve had close to 300 or more spectators. We not only have things pertaining to cars.” Food offered for sale throughout the event will include homemade baked goods and breakfast item. A disc jockey will provide music, and there will also be a blood drive held during the day. “At the St. John’s table, (visitors will be able to enter) a free drawing for a Reading Coffee Roasters basket,” said Kinkaid, noting that vendors of crafts and other items will also be on hand. Another attraction will be a Belgian sheepdog show featuring dogs performing tricks and agility demonstrations. Children will be able to visit with the dogs and play catch with them. Proceeds from the car show always benefit church projects and a local charity. In 2017, the event benefited Berks Women in Crisis. Last year, Opportunity House was the beneficiary. Past beneficiaries have included the police and fire departments of Robeson Township. “The car show committee decides who the charitable organization is going to be,” Kinkaid said, noting that planning for the event begins in January. The car show committee chair this year is Dan Gurtowski. For more information, individuals may email stjohnsgibraltar @windstream.net or call the church office at 610-582-3655. More information is also available by searching for “St John’s Lutheran Church” on Facebook. Handicapped-accessible parking will be available during the show.

At a ceremony in May, Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine, Scranton, conferred 96 Master of Biomedical Sciences degrees upon students who compose Geisinger Commonwealth’s graduating Class of 2019. Graduates include Bradley Nafziger of Morgantown.
