Basketball Team Shoots Hoops For The Hungry By Francine Fulton

In an effort to give back to the community during the coronavirus pandemic, members of the Twin Valley High School (TVHS) boys’ varsity and junior varsity basketball team took on the challenge of making 5,000 jumpshots during the weekend of June 6 and 7, while asking the public to donate 1 cent for each basket made to raise funds for local food pantries. The boys surpassed their jumpshot goal and were able to raise more than $4,500, which was split between the Honey Brook and Twin Valley food pantries. The team members also collected nonperishable food items, which they donated to the pantries. Chris Mensak, assistant head coach, said he came up with the fundraising idea after sensing that the players were in need of a diversion since they had

been in quarantine and staying at home. “I was keeping in constant contact with players through Zoom meetings and text conversations to let them know we were thinking about them and we cared about them, especially when school was not yet in virtual session, he said. “I was their coach at the junior high level and I knew them for a long time. I had an awareness (of their frustration) and I could feel the morale was dropping. We wanted to come up with something to get them re-engaged. After receiving approval from the TVHS athletic department, Mensak, the players and parent volunteers organized the fundraiser and set up a GoFundMe page, titled “Helping Hands Through Hoops. During the weekend, the team shot hoops at their homes and at local parks and recorded their efforts. “We set up an app, which allowed them to input See Basketball pg 2

Ken Ross (sixth from rigth), board chairman of the Honey Brook Food Pantry, accepted a monetary donation along with food items from members of the Twin Valley High School boys’ varsity and junior varsity basketball team, which they obtained by shooting jumpshots during the weekend of June 6 and 7. The team also made a donation to the Twin Valley Food Pantry.

Almost 50% of the fatty acid in coconut oil is lauric acid, which also enhances the immune system. So for those reasons alone, you should try adding coconut oil to your coffee! - 1 cup brewed coffee - 1 tsp. Golden Barrel Coconut Oil - 1/4 tsp. cocoa powder (optional) Brew coffee. shooting hoops, there was also an opportunity for community members to go and watch the action. The players presented bags of food donations and a check for $2,171 to the Twin Valley Food Pantry during a brief ceremony held at West Nantmeal Park. They also presented individual checks from community members, resulting in a net donation of approximately $2,500. The team members also presented a check for $1,250 to the Honey Brook Food Pantry, along with food donations, during one of the pantry’s distribution days. Additional checks were later delivered to the pantry, resulting in a donation of close to $2,000. At the pantry, the players met with board chairman Ken Ross and heard a little about how the money will be used to purchase fresh meat and produce for pantry clients. “They went that day to see what (the Honey Brook Food Pantry) did in action and make it real to them. The players got to tour the facility and see the operation. It made a profound difference in what they did,” noted Mensak. “We are trying to instill a culture of community service. Besides the ultimate goal of giving back and helping the community, it was an important life lesson for them.”

their progress every time they went out and shot,” Mensak explained. “West Nantmeal Park was open, and a number of players used that site. We had two players who lived in a fairly large development in the Twin Valley School District in which there were baskets set up at the end of a cul-de-sac.” Through the app, players were able to keep count of their baskets. “They could not shoot any closer than 10 feet to the basket. It was on the honor system, but I was monitoring the whole thing through the app,” Mensak explained. “They sent updates on their phones.” Mensak also sent out encouraging emails to the players during the fundraiser. “There was constant interaction going on throughout the weekend. By Saturday I thought we were not going to make it. But by Sunday morning, they were going at it gangbusters,” he reported. “They shot over 15,000 shots during that weekend. Out of those, they made about 7,000. On average, we calculated each player took about 800 shots. Each player put in a minimum of six hours.” The GoFundMe page listed two drop-off points where members of the public could donate food. State Farm To Offer Grants To Nonprofits A grant funding opportunity from State Farm is being offered for nonprofits. State Farm Neighborhood Assist will award $25,000 grants to 40 nonprofit organizations to help fund neighborhood improvement projects. In a recent State Farm research study, one-quarter of respondents said that they are “extremely” or “very” involved in trying to improve their neighborhood and six in 10 said they are trying to improve their neighborhood in some capacity. State Farm Neighborhood Assist aims to be a catalyst for that change. Individuals can submit a cause at www.neighborhoodassist.com. A submission guide is available on the website. State Farm will accept the first 2,000 submissions. The State Farm Review Committee will then narrow the field to the top 200 finalists. Voters will decide which community improvement projects win. The public will have a chance to vote 10 times a day, every day for 10 days, from Wednesday, Sept. 23, through Friday, Oct. 2, for their favorite causes from the list of finalists. The 40 causes that receive the most votes will each win a $25,000 grant. Winners will be announced on Wednesday, Nov. 4. Last year, 163,000 people cast a total of 4.4 million votes in support of their favorite causes, selecting winners from small towns and big cities. Since the program began, State Farm has awarded $8 million in support of more than 300 causes. For more information, readers may visit www.neighborhoodassist.com or call their local State Farm agent.

alone. “Everyone goes through some form of treatment and side effects and it has impacted them or their family. Everyone’s journey is different, but there are some things everyone faces,” she explained. Cheryl noted that hosting the support group is a way to help others learn from her experiences. “After going through cancer three times, it’s time for me to give back. I can help people go through the dark days,” she said. “If they are finished treatment, they can still come. You still deal with side effects as you try to get your life back to the new normal.” The group will hold a Rock-AThon fundraiser on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 9 a.m. to noon in the church’s fellowship hall. “People will sponsor us to rock in rocking chair for three hours. It won’t just be the group; it will be caregivers and the youth group from the church,” Cheryl noted. Proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society and the costs associated with the cancer support group. For more information, readers may contact Cheryl at Cherylca@ptd.net or 610-762-0002.

WITF announced that central Pennsylvania families seeking a fun, educational experience at home can join the free “Summer STEM Adventure!” Based on the “Engineering By Design” curriculum, the summer camp style experience will guide families through a combination of PBS KIDS television programs, discussion questions, structured craft activities and career exploration for children in kindergarten through fourth grade. Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education is a studentcentered approach that encourages development of skills such as problem solving, curiosity, communication and design thinking. WITF, the Pennsylvania Department of Education and Intermediate Units (IUs) 12, 13 and 15, partnered to provide the summer camp in a format that may spark interest in STEM and its related careers, support different styles of learning, remove obstacles to participation, and meet educational objectives in a rewarding way. The IUs recognized obstacles to participation could include families not having craft resources or broadcast television signals at home. To overcome these challenges, WITF assembled 3,000 resource bags and 300 antennas for IUs to distribute to partner locations that serve families directly. Each free resource bag contains pencils, a pencil sharpener, crayons, colored pencils, paper plates, construction paper, safety scissors, a glue stick and the curriculum packet with instructions in English and Spanish. During the eight-week camp, families will watch featured PBS KIDS programs like “Wild Kratts” and “Hero Elementary” on WITF TV to learn about animal habitats, camouflage, mimicry, structure and more. A discussion guide and key vocabulary will help caregivers talk to their children about what they are watching. Then families will work together on an animal habitat design project using the materials in the resource bags. The curriculum also includes introductions to STEM careers for young learners, a suggested book list and links to extension STEM games and activities online. The partners hope that participation in

come and share what cancer they have. Each person can talk for a moment or two; they will not be expected to go into depth. I will also ask them if they have specific topics they would like to have presented in the group (in future weeks).” Because of COVID-19, only bottled water and wrapped snacks will be offered. Attendees will practice social distancing, and masks are recommended. Future sessions will feature guest speakers and more. “The first part of each session will be informative - things that cancer patients have available to them that they may not be aware of,” said Cheryl. “I have different people coming in and they will speak for about 20 minutes. Sam and Jill Waters (of Still Waters Ministries) are doing a video. The Brandywine YMCA will come in to do a program.” She said that there will also be time for the group members to offer support to one another. “Being diagnosed with cancer can be overwhelming. It is not just about the treatment or prognosis,” she stated. “Having cancer affects the way you live, work and think. It can also affect our relationships.” After doing research, Cheryl saw a need to start a local cancer support group that was open to all. “We found that cancer support groups are (usually) specific to certain cancers, like breast cancer, prostate cancer or lung cancer, and they are (held) at the hospitals,” she stated. “When I approached my church about the need, pastor Bob Petersheim offered space and support to help the group get started.” Since getting approval from the church, Cheryl has posted signs about the group at local stores and on Facebook. “I sent out bulletin inserts to about 30 churches in the area,” she noted. Cheryl said that the most important part of the support group is to let participants know they are not

The virtual event will be based on an honor system, and runners are encouraged to measure the 5K (3.1 miles) or the 10K (6.2 miles) with a running app or on a treadmill. Only those who run the 5K and 10K will be eligible for the top prizes. ORT volunteer Sharon Valentino, one of the race coordinators, noted the event follows ORT’s previous virtual race held in June that took the place of the annual Creamery Hustle 5K/10K that is normally held at Penn State Berks in Reading. “ We could not hold that because of the social distancing requirements, so we decided to try a virtual race,” she said, noting that all registrants in the June event

received a coupon for ice cream. “We didn’t expect the response that we got. We had 110 participants. We were really excited about that.” Following the race, participants were asked if they would take part in a virtual running/walking event again, and nearly all those who were polled said they would be interested. “People were so excited (after the first virtual event), that we decided we would try to hold another one this summer,” noted Valentino. Valentino said that the runners were very competitive during the first virtual 5K/10K. “People really wanted to prove they were being honest and took

screenshots of Map My Run to prove their times,” she noted. “ We honor that, but it’s not required.” The upcoming virtual event is designed to be enjoyed by individuals and families alike. “People (have been) cooped up and are looking for something to do,” Valentino said. “With a lot of summer camps not running, people are looking for things to do with their kids.” She added that the Christmas aspect of the virtual race makes it especially appealing to children. All proceeds from the event will benefit ORT, which was started by Vern Murphy, who lost his wife, Beth, to breast cancer in 2009. The charity’s motto is “OneRunTogether - so no one fights cancer alone.” Those interested in seeking financial support from the organization while undergoing treatment may complete an application at www.oneruntogether.org by clicking on Patient Grant Application. ORT’s board of

directors reviews all applications, which must be signed and submitted by an oncologist or a certified medical professional. After an application is approved, bills are submitted for direct payment. Normally, Murphy personally delivers the grant money to patients throughout Berks and Chester counties and spends time with each of them. He also presents them with a Bible. During the stay-at-home order, however, Murphy instead personally called each grant recipient; Bibles and the grant money were sent through the mail. Since 2011, more than 380 grants have been given to help patients with rent, mortgage payments, utility bills and medical costs. For more details about the “Jolly Jingle in July,” readers may contact race director Steve Elliker at 484-844-1249 or visit www.facebook.com/oneruntogether. More information about ORT is available at www.oneruntogether.org.

Caley Receives Academic Honors LeTourneau University, Longview, Texas, had to postpone its 2020 graduation ceremony, previously scheduled for May 9, due to the coronavirus pandemic. The celebration of this year’s graduates has been rescheduled to coincide in 2021 with the university’s 75th anniversary.

Weston Caley of Morgantown graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering. Caley was also named to the spring 2020 dean’s list. The dean’s list recognizes students who have achieved a grade point average between 3.50 and 3.99 for the semester.

Hinkletown Mennonite School (HMS), 272 Wanner Road, Ephrata, will hold its annual Business Networking Breakfast on Tuesday, July 28, from 6:45 to 9 a.m. in the school gymnasium. Preparations were in place in March to welcome more than 120 Lancaster County business leaders to HMS’ annual networking breakfast, but these plans were changed after the closures of schools and businesses due to COVID-19. The networking breakfast is a way for HMS to thank its community business partners. Now, as businesses and the community begin to reopen, HMS will offer an opportunity for local business leaders to connect and feel supported in challenging times. The breakfast will include a presentation by Forbes Coaches Council speaker Ken Gosnell as well as networking opportunities with other Lancaster County

businesses and leaders. Gosnell is the founder and chief servant officer of CEO Experience. He has helped hundreds of leaders in businesses and organizations have breakthrough experiences that connect biblical principles to business and help leaders make a greater impact in work and life. His presentation, “Well Done,” will focus on facing challenges and engaging in fulfilling life, social imprint and community impact that are God-honoring, particularly during this time when economic challenges loom large. Breakfast is free to local leaders, thanks to presenting sponsors. Registration is required. To register and for more information, readers may visit www.hinkletownschool.org/ events/Business-Networking. HMS is entering its 40th year of partnering with families in the areas of Ephrata and New Holland and beyond.

Initially, Anchored Ministries began with a 16-foot enclosed trailer that was transformed into a mobile clothing closet in May 2018 with the help of Morgantown Community Church (MCC), where the Kanters attend. The mobile trailer makes stops at sites in Berks, Lancaster, Montgomery and Chester counties, including at the Honey Brook Food Pantry and at CrossNet Ministries in New Holland. On July 4, 2018, Anchored Ministries established a headquarters and moved into the former Warwick Bible Church in Elverson. “We have grown exponentially, (and) our ministry has been blessed immeasurably,” said Erika. “Our trailer fleet has tripled in size. We have had two additional trailers (that were) 100% donated - a second 16-foot trailer and a 32-foot trailer. Rite Aid Launches Miracle Balloon Campaign an unprecedented pandemic adding urgency to the cause. Children’s hospitals and their systems are actively working to develop COVID-19 treatments and vaccines. At the same time, investments in telehealth service, personal protective equipment and coronavirus testing supplies have escalated hospitals’ expenses while the suspension of elective surgeries and routine procedures is costing hospitals revenue and impacting children in need of care. The Rite Aid Foundation will also direct funds raised through KidCents, its customer-generated charitable giving program dedicated to improving the health and well-being of children living in communities Rite Aid serves, through the duration of the campaign. In April, the foundation also issued a special $250,000 grant to CMN Hospitals to address immediate needs related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

To learn how to make financial donations, readers may visit www.BrethrenAuction.org. Donations of goods will not be accepted this year. Next year’s auction is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Sept. 24 and 25, 2021, at the Lebanon Expo Center.
