Babushka’s Animal Rescue, a new nonprofit organization, is currently seeking foster families to care for dogs and cats until their forever homes can be found. Additionally, the rescue has several dogs, cats and kittens ready for adoption. Babushka’s was founded by Honey Brook resident Holly Schiller. “I’ve been involved in animal rescue since I was a little kid with my grandmother. It became my passion, and once I was old enough, I finally made the leap last July to start my own nonprofit organization,” she explained. “I am a veterinary technician, which is what I do during the day, so my life (revolves around) animals.” Schiller noted that the rescue is named for her own senior rescue dog, Babushka. “She was dumped and had many health issues when I first received her,” said Schiller. “Fortunately, she’s made an amazing recovery

and continues to exceed my expectations.” Right now, Babushka’s is concentrating on finding homes for small dogs (under 25 pounds), puppies, kittens and, if space allows, adult cats. Those interested in fostering or adopting an animal are asked to email Schiller at Babushkasanimal rescue@gmail.com or contact her through www.face book.com/BabushkasAnimalRescue. “We are completely foster-based, so there is no public facility,” explained Schiller. “Specifically, I really could use fosters for kittens for teaching socialization. I do have an application that people need to complete. I require vet references and personal references, which is part of the application process.” Photos of animals ready for adoption can be seen on the Facebook page. Among those seeking a forever home is Brandon, a 5-year-old male shih tzu. “He is very friendly and loves people and other dogs,” noted Schiller. “He is easygoing and would be suitable for an See Pet Rescue pg 5

“We want to create a space where people can go and feel a sense of belonging and normalcy within the community,” explained coordinator Crystal Yunginger. “A Memory Café is an opportunity to connect with other people who may be facing the same challenges and find informal peer support.” “ We will have complimentary refreshments, including coffee, hot tea and bakery items,” said Yunginger. “After that, it’s a social setting. The goal is to have those with memory impairment and their care partners converse together, share their stories and establish a community.” There will also be a resource information table set up at each meeting. “We will have a table that will include things like informational brochures (detailing) what the community has to offer - support groups and adult day services,” said Yunginger. “We will have booklets on a wide range of topics, See Memory Café pg 6

Eagle Scout Candidate Completes Library Project By Francine Fulton

The sign in front of Honey Brook Community Library now has a new look thanks to Garrett Tinsley, who completed the work as part of his Eagle Scout service project. Garrett, 17, a member of Hopewell Troop 8, repainted the sign, created a flower garden around it and created a pathway to the sign using rocks. Garrett, who will be a senior at Twin Valley High

School this fall, lives near the library and thought it would be an ideal place to complete his project. “The library is right by my house. I went to the library and asked them what they needed done See Service Project pg 2

dull brown color,” he noted. “We used outdoor paint designed for metal. (Mrs. Spade) wanted it to match the murals on the side of the library, so I suggested blue.” He said the work was completed over several weekends with the help of family members, friends and fellow Scouts. Garrett said that even though he was quite successful soliciting donations from businesses, it was challenging to approach people to ask for help. “For me, the hardest part was talking to people and getting them to donate,” he said. “They don’t know you, and you are asking for something, but everyone was really (generous).” Garrett hopes to have his Eagle Court of Honor ceremony in late summer or early fall after he completes the merit badge requirements and his project passes the Eagle Scout Board of Review. Garrett, who said that he plans to attend college to study criminal justice, believes that Scouting has prepared him for the future, teaching him about leadership and public speaking skills. He also enjoys seeing the results of his handiwork at the library. “I get to see the sign all the time,” he said. Troop 8 is chartered by Hopewell United Methodist Church in Downingtown. In 2018, Troop 8 celebrated its 75th anniversary. The troop meets on Tuesdays from 7 to 8 p.m. on the second floor of McCausland Hall at the East Brandywine Township Building, 1214 Horseshoe Pike (Route 322), Downingtown. and if they would be willing for me to do it as an Eagle Scout project,” he said. “It is a community building near me, and it was the first one I considered.” Garrett said that the idea to make sign improvements was suggested by Jennifer Spade, library director. “I had to write up a proposal for the project, and then I had to get Mrs. Spade to approve the proposal,” Garrett said, noting that the Scoutmaster of Troop 8 also had to approve the proposal along with representatives from the Chester County Boy Scout Council. After he received approval, Garrett’s next step was to seek donations from local businesses. Lowe’s of Morgantown provided paint and primer, a hose, buckets, edging and flowers. John’s Supply and Rentals donated topsoil, and Elverson Supply Company provided the mulch. Sauder’s Nursery gave Garrett a discount on flowers. He also received rocks and perennials from Elaine McErlane of Knob Hill Farm. In addition, monetary donations were collected at the library to help support the beautification project. The project, completed this spring, included removing a row of bushes and the grass growing around the sign. “We tilled the ground around the sign,” Garrett noted. “We used a motorized rototiller several times before we planted. (We planted) mostly perennials, and we included a few annuals to make it look nicer because a lot of the perennials hadn’t flowered yet. Most of the plants will come up again. I also lined rocks up as a pathway to the sign (for when library staff need) to change the lettering.” Finally, Garrett painted the sign blue. “Before, the sign was a

While their parents or caregivers load clothing into the washing machine and fold items as they come out of the dryer, children who visit local laundromats now have the opportunity to spend their time there beginning a lifelong love of reading by enjoying books provided by the Laundromat Library League (LLL). The organization, founded in 2014, collects gently used books for children of all ages, from toddlers through teenagers. Volunteers then place sets of 50 to 60 books in simply decorated boxes in local laundromats with the permission of the business owners. Each book has a sticker that instructs, “Read It. Love It. Pass It On.” Since its inception, the LLL has placed more than 72,000 children’s books in close to 150 laundromats primarily in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware, but also in 11 other states. To locate a participating laundromat where a library is set up, individuals may visit www.laundromatlibraryleague.org and click on “Where You Will Find Us” for an interactive map of locations. “A book icon is (available) for each of our sites

and up pops the name of the site and the address,” explained Chester County resident Arlene Rengert, LLL president and co-founder. Area laundromats where libraries are located include Parkesburg Laundry, 650 Main St., Parkesburg; Caln Laundromat, 1834 E. Lincoln Highway, Coatesville; Rainbow Laundromat, 891 W. Lincoln Highway, Coatesville; Christiana Laundromat, 150 Water St., Christiana; Sundance Laundromat, 510 E. Main St., New Holland; and the Blue Spot Laundry, 2981 Lincoln Highway, Sadsburyville. “It started with the Poly Clean in West Chester. One of us knew the owner enough to ask permission (to start a library),” Rengert recalled. “ We were largely in West Chester and Kennett Square, and then gradually (the effort grew) just by word of mouth.” She noted that even more people learned about the libraries via the internet. She said that every effort is being made to open up more libraries. “When we started in 2014, we actually thought the hardest thing would be to get books. But the hardest thing is to reach more laundromat owners,” Rengert said. Local groups are invited to conduct a book drive for LLL. There is a special need for picture books and books in Spanish and other languages. “The third-grade class at Octorara Elementary School did a book drive for us two years ago. The teacher, Tammy Anthony, found out about (the LLL) because a couple of students brought in books that had our sticker on the

front. (Some of the students said) it was the only book they had at home,” said Rengert. Financial donations are also needed to ship books to laundromats in other states. Recently, LLL was granted a $500 Community Champions Grant from Constellation, an Exelon company. Additionally, the Chester County Chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) gave the LLL a donation of $800, which was raised by placing spare change in piggy banks. AAUW members were given plain white ceramic piggy banks and decorated them as part of the effort. Rengert is pleased with how the LLL program has grown. She emphasized that books are beneficial to young learners, citing a study appearing in the April 2019 issue of Pediatrics. “Recently the American Academy of Pediatrics documented that actual books have a significantly greater developmental benefit to children in comparison to books read to them or from an electronic screen,” she stated. For more information about the LLL or to volunteer or learn how to hold a book drive, individuals should email Rengert at laundromatlibrary@gmail.com. Laundromat owners willing to offer space for a box of books should also contact Rengert. More information about the organization is also available at www.facebook.com/Laudromat LibraryLeague. The Chester County Fund for Women and Girls (CCFWG) recently awarded $217,000 in grants to 27 nonprofit organizations that serve the needs of women and girls throughout Chester County. Nearly 100 community members, grantee partners and CCFWG board and committee members gathered at the General Warren Inne on June 18 for CCFWG’s 2019 Grants Celebration to honor the hard work and dedication of this year’s grantees. Representatives from three of the organizations spoke about the bravery of the women and girls they serve. Among the speakers was Christine Zaccarelli, CEO of The Crime Victims’ Center of Chester County Inc. Jill Laufenberg, executive director of Wings for Success, an organization that provides clothing and accessories to women reentering the work force, shared a heartwarming story from a client who received free styling services and a renewed sense of confidence in preparation for a job interview. Lisa Gall and Amy Perez of Mighty Writers spoke about how the Kennett Square community has embraced their efforts to establish new programming aimed at helping girls in need write with clarity and grow in confidence. For the second year in a row, CCFWG awarded two-year sustained funding grants to three Chester County organizations: Mighty Writers, YoungMoms and The Clinic. Additional funding was awarded through “Moving Her Forward” Impact Grants, a grantmaking program established last year to focus on quick responses to pressing needs in the community. Impact Grants were also awarded. The Bianca Nikol Merge With Mercy Foundation received $4,500 to launch a local grief support group for family members of victims lost to acts of violence. The charity’s motto is “OneRunTogether - so no one fights cancer alone.” Those interested in seeking financial support from the organization while undergoing treatment may complete an application at www.oneruntogether.org by clicking on Patient Grant Application. ORT’s board of directors reviews all applications, which must be signed and submitted by an oncologist or a certified professional. After an application is approved, bills are submitted for direct payment. Murphy personally delivers the grant money to patients throughout Berks and Chester counties, and he spends time with each of the cancer patients. He also presents them with a Bible.

they can provide understanding and resources. Yunginger, a registered nurse, said that Memory Cafés have proved successful in the United States and internationally. “They started in the UK, and there are many throughout the United States,” she said, noting that another local Memory Café meets in Lititz. “It is something that has been studied and researched over many years, and they’ve had a lot of success.” Yunginger believes that the gettogethers will be beneficial for both those with memory issues and the caregivers. “It is a stigmafree environment because everyone is on the same page. When they go there, the caregivers do not feel like they have to justify or defend their loved ones,” she stated. “Everyone can feel at ease and stress free, and it limits isolation. It gets (people with memory issues) out of the home; it’s a safe space and they can socialize and communicate with others.” For more information about the group, readers may contact Yunginger at 717-487-6223. Pecans are a species of hickory native to northern Mexico and the southern United States. Pecan trees are cultivated for their edible nuts, and it can take 12 years for a tree to reach maturity and begin producing. There are many different ways to incorporate pecans into recipes, such as in cookie bars. This recipe for Pecan Praline Cookie Triangles comes from “The Pampered Chef Stoneware Inspirations (The Pampered Chef Ltd.)” by The Pampered Chef Test Kitchens.

In another move by Chester County to battle the opioid and heroin crisis, Commissioners Michelle Kichline, Kathi Cozzone, and Terence Farrell recently presented a check for $50,000 to boost funds for the county’s Community Outreach and Prevention Education (COPE) program. Introduced in April 2018 and originally piloted in Chester County and Brandywine hospitals, the COPE service now reaches all five county hospitals, and the program’s effectiveness in its first year has resulted in referrals for substance use disorder treatment services for two out of three individuals served by the COPE program. The $50,000 donation by the commissioners comes from the proceeds of the Chester County Color 5K in November 2018, which raised funds specifically to help Chester County combat the opioid and heroin crisis. In the

three years that the Color 5K has taken place, more than $110,000 has been raised to fund “warm handoff ” efforts in hospital emergency rooms that have supported the COPE program. Developed by the Chester County Department of Drug and Alcohol Services with input from the county’s Drug Overdose Prevention Task Force, the COPE program ensures opioid overdose survivors being treated in local emergency departments are personally encouraged to enter treatment. A on-call Engagement Team provides personal support 24/7 for overdose survivors and their family and friends while they are in the hospital emergency department, as well as following discharge from the ER. COPE also provides overdose prevention information and outreach to first responders and hospital staff. In addition to developing and implementing the COPE program, Chester County continues to address the many different aspects of the opioid and heroin crisis through its Overdose Prevention Task Force. The county created a task force, which takes a multidisciplinary approach that includes the arrest and prosecution of drug dealers, moving those suffering from addiction into treatment and counseling, educating children and their parents through prevention programming, taking drugs off the streets through the drop box initiative, and working with doctors and health care providers on opioid prescribing practices. Stress is a part of many people’s daily lives, no matter their age. But calming activities can tone down the body’s stress responses, helping to alleviate stress. Summertime is an ideal time of the year to embrace relaxing activities, because the hustle and bustle of everyday life tends to slow down during the summer, when children are out of school and vacations are on the docket. Hobbies and other interests can help tame stress by promoting calm. Some options include listening to and/or playing music, gardening, reading a book, painting or crafting, or taking a dance class. Music can be energizing or calming, depending on which music is chosen. Researchers at Stanford University found that rhythmic music may have therapeutic effects for treating a range of neurological conditions, as it stimulates the brain and can perhaps See Stress pg 11

Entertainment on July 20, will begin at 1 p.m. when John Collins will stroll the park with his accordion. The Outhouse Races will also begin on the grass in the park at 1 p.m. Outhouse teams may register up until shortly before the races begin. Dusty Fender will perform on the side stage at 2 p.m., and at 3:30 p.m., an airplane will drop sweets from the sky for a candy scramble. The tug of war will be held at 4:30 p.m., and Matt Cadabra will perform illusions at 6 p.m. Glen Shelton, who hails from Virginia, will sing a mix of pop, country, and gospel on the main stage at 7 p.m. Shelton’s performance will be followed by a fireworks display. “Our fireworks are all aerial,” stated Styer. On July 21, a church service will be held in the park at 10:30 a.m. Child care for small children will be provided during the service. A community picnic will be held at noon. Alumni Reunion Concert Planned West Chester University alumni will gather for the annual Criterions Jazz Ensemble Alumni Reunion Concert on Thursday, July 18, at 7:30 p.m. The concert will be and open to the public in the Emilie K. Asplundh Concert Hall, Philips Memorial Building, 700 S. High St., West Chester. For 34 years, alumni of the university’s jazz ensemble, The Criterions, have reunited each summer to perform jazz, big band and swing music as directed by Lee Southall, who was leader of “Crites in his senior year and directs and plays trombone in the reunion group. Southall has organized the event nearly every year. This year, Southall will be joined by a codirector, Dave DiValentino, who directs the jazz band at North Penn High School and plays trumpet in various ensembles, including the Philly Pops Orchestra and the Philly Pops Big Band. Bob Curnow is another alumnus

attending and playing in the reunion concert. Curnow is the owner of Sierra Music, a big band music publishing company. He donated his complete library to West Chester’s Wells School of Music. Some of his 2019 releases will be played at the alumni concert. The Criterions student band has been active on campus since the 1920s, when it was established as a dance band, making it the longest-running university jazz band in the country. It is known for playing American popular songs and jazz standards from the early 20th century. For the past five years, the concert has coincided with the university’s Summer Jazz Camp, a weeklong camp program for middle and high school students. The young campers will again open the concert with some music of their own. For more information, readers may visit www.wcupa.edu/arts.
