Lessons From “Into The Woods Jr.” Cavod Campers To Stage Fairy Tale Mash-Up BY ANN MEAD ASH

According to Stephanie Morales, who is making her theatrical directorial debut with Cavod’s “Into the Woods Jr.,” the woods are a metaphor for life. “We have an idea of what life should look like, but let’s look at 2020,” said Morales, pointing out the timeliness of the message. “Life was supposed to look one way, but how do you roll with those punches?”

“Into the Woods Jr.” is, in Morales’ words, “a modified, condensed, and wholesome version of the show,” which has been called a modern mashup of classic fairy tales. The show brings together main characters from “Cinderella,” “Jack and the Beanstalk,” “Little Red Riding Hood” and “Rapunzel,” and along with a witch, and a few pieces of other beloved tales, in a story about a baker and his wife and their wish to start a family. Seeing The Color Of Life For The First Time BY FRANCINE FULTON

andy Litwin of Parkesburg is color blind, which causes difficulties with everyday tasks like coordinating clothing, judging the color of a traffic light, playing board games and even cooking. Litwin, 41, a graduate of Twin Valley High School, along with other volunteers, recently got to experience seeing colors for the first time thanks to special glasses developed by EnChroma, a company based out of Berkeley, Calif., that produces eyewear for color blindness and low vision. Eight pairs of the glasses are now available to borrow through Berks County Public Libraries (BCPL). The glasses were unveiled during a ceremony held at the Village Library of Morgantown on June 26.

“Colors come up every day, so it’s an opportunity to communicate with people in language you have never been able to speak.” Amy Resh, BCPL administrator, was the host of the program, which was attended by Berks County Commissioners Christian Leinbach, Kevin Barnhardt and Michael Rivera.

Leinbach said he was surprised to learn statistics about color blindness. “One in 12 males are color blind. One in 200 females are color blind,” he said. “I did not know the disparity was that great.” After a count of three, the men donned the glasses and immediately began looking at the scenery around them. “When I put them on, immediately some red and greens had a bright, vivid and drastic change. I started looking to familiar objects, my car, the balloons and plants to see the difference,” said Litwin. “As I wore the glasses longer, more color changes began to stand out.” “Now I have to go back and learn colors, but it’s a great opportunity, and I am thankful for it,” Litwin added. “Colors come up every day, so it’s an opportunity to communicate with people in language you have never been able to speak.”

Those who utilize solar energy at their home or business are invited to become part of the Chester County Clean Energy Tour. This year’s tour will be virtual, and those who visit the tour website will be able to learn about solar energy and its various uses. Chester County’s event will be part of the 26th annual National Solar Tour, presented by the American Solar Energy Society, which showcases solar-powered homes and buildings across the nation.

Morales noted that one challenge of staging the show is that the script only calls for about 15 cast members, but the camp attracted 27 attendees. “We are trying to find new and creative ways to implement everyone and make sure each one has a moment on stage,” she said. However, even before camp had begun, Morales stated, she was having fun deciding which direction to take the quirky script and gathering the cast for a read-through. “The kids all were excited,” she said, noting that when she walked into the gathering, she heard children squealing and laughing. “Seeing people hug each other … we are starting off with a positive, loving environment,” she said. Many of the show’s lessons are meant for audience members of all ages. “At some point in life, we are all ‘in the woods,’” said Morales. “You follow the journeys of all these characters who (are seeking) a specific idea of happiness, (but) as they travel into the woods they discover that ideal happy moment is not what they needed, but only what they wanted.” Tickets may be purchased in advance at www.cavod.org.

The Daniel Boone Homestead in Birdsboro, Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site in Elverson and Morlatton Village near Douglassville are three of the sites featured in the “Road to Roots” program being offered this summer by the Mifflin Community Library (MCL) and the Berks History Center. As part of the first-time event, residents are invited to explore 13 locations throughout Berks County through Tuesday, Aug. 31. Those who visit at least 10 of the locations will be entered into a drawing for prizes. Tourgoers are asked to share photos from their visits to the various sites on social media with the hashtag #berksroadtoroots. Those who would like to take part in “Road to Roots” are asked to pick up a map to the 13 locations at MCL, 6 Philadelphia Ave., Shillington, or at the Berks History Center, 940 Centre Ave., Reading. Maps to the locations are also available for downloading at www.berkslibraries.org/branch/road toroots. The map includes a QR code that will lead participants to a summary of each location and provide a history of the landmark and historical photos. The program, according to event organizers, is designed to get families to explore Berks County in a safe

manner while there are still some concerns about the pandemic. “Things are getting back to normal, but we are still in the transition stage,” said Amy Fulton, communications and marketing manager for the Berks History Center. “There is so Daniel Boone Homestead in Birdsmuch history in Berks boro is one of the tour stops on the County. Independence Day Celebrated At Hopewell Furnace BY FRANCINE FULTON

When visitors arrived at Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site on July 4, they were invited to sign a mock Declaration of Independence with an authentic quill pen, marking the beginning of activities being held to celebrate Independence Day and the 245th anniversary of the signing of the historic document. A ceremony featuring patriotic music and readings has been held at the site for the past 10 years, although it took place virtually in

2020. Jeff Jones, site manager, welcomed those in attendance to celebrate not only the holiday, but also the return of the in-person event. The program, which was held on the front porch of the Ironmaster’s Mansion, was presented by the Friends of Hopewell Furnace. Presenters included past park superintendent Edie Shean-Hammond, who is now a member of the Friends; Friends member Christine Emmert, author of “From Out the Fiery Furnace,” a one-act play featuring the stories of life in the 19th

century at Hopewell; singer Isabelle Stetka; and Stetka’s grandmother, Francine Black, who provided keyboard accompaniment. Black is also artistic director of the Berks Opera Workshop.

Clean Energy from pg 1 “We are inviting businesses large and small, schools and houses of worship to showcase what we can do in our own community to harness free energy from the sun to generate electricity, warm and cool our buildings, heat water and (reduce) monthly utility bills,” said Nora Ziegler, a retired public school teacher and a Chester County resident who is coordinating the Chester County portion of the Clean Energy Tour. She noted that the tour was held in person in 2019, but that it moved to a virtual format in 2020 because of the pandemic. Organizers decided to make this year’s tour virtual as well. “2020 was the first time that the solar tour had ever (gone virtual). We did have about 15 homes last year, but we are working hard to get other types of buildings this year,” said Ziegler. Previous years have highlighted

Camphill Village Kimberton Hills, whose solar system powers several of its buildings, including its café. Several municipal facilities were on the tour in 2019, including those in Uwchlan Township, which used state incentives to install electric vehicle charging stations at its township office. In southern Chester County, the tour included two large solar installations at Longwood Gardens and Marlboro Mushrooms. “Last year, we (highlighted) a family business - Lani Ice in Ludwigs Corner, which is solar powered,” said Ziegler. Lani Ice offers smoothies, shaved ice other products from its solar-powered trailer. Those interested in participating on the tour will be asked to submit photos and a three-minute video about their use of solar power. Technical help will be provided if needed. the West Vincent Community Day on Saturday, Sept. 25, will serve as the kickoff to the Chester County Clean Energy Tour. The virtual tour, with videos and photo presentations, will be available at www.nationalsolar tour.org, starting on Saturday, Oct. 2. “Chester County ranks second in solar installations in the state,” Ziegler pointed out. “For the last two years, we have led the nation in local clean energy open houses. People who are interested in the concept and don’t know that much about it (are encouraged to participate). Maybe they are thinking about using solar at their homes.” Those interested in showcasing their use of solar power in the tour are asked to complete an interest form at www.nationalsolartour.org.
