Walking - The New Favorite Pastime By Francine Fulton

Because of the COVID-19 stay-athome order, many people began taking walks around their neighborhoods, at parks and on local trails. For

many, walking was a way to pass the time, get exercise while gyms were closed and find a sense of peace during a challenging time. Even though Pennsylvania has now entered the green phase of reopening,

many have continued their outings. “I have been enjoying many great walks and enjoying nature since the pandemic started, stated Maria Long, director of the Village Library of Morgantown. “Carsonia Park in Reading is one of my favorite walking places. I love seeing and photographing the ducks and geese. They are so docile, and I enjoy feeding them. It is my go-to spot to clear my head when

the most stressful days hit. “Since I was not able to get to my local gym, walking and hiking became my substitute and one that I have really come to enjoy, she added. “I am hoping to incorporate outdoor programs (at) the library. Mark Zerr, executive director of the Hay Creek Valley Historical Association, which operates Historic Joanna Furnace Iron Works near Morgantown, also See Walking pg 2

Many people who took up walking and hiking during the stay-at-home order have continued their outdoor treks throughout Berks County.

Maria Long, director of the Village Library of Morgantown, enjoys visiting Carsonia Park in Reading to photograph and feed the ducks and geese.

HMS Plans Golf Tournament By Ann Mead Ash

Hinkletown Mennonite School (HMS) invites community members and friends of the school to take part in its annual benefit golf tournament, which is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 11. The tournament will be held at French Creek Golf Club, 4500 Conestoga Road, Elverson. This year’s tournament, which was originally scheduled to be held in June but was delayed due to COVID-19 restrictions, will use a scramble format to provide fun for golfers of all ability levels. The tournament will offer lunch at 11:30 a.m. prior to a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m., with the tournament followed by dinner. French Creek boasts an 18-hole championship golf course, designed by course architect Gil Hanse and spread across 230 acres of rolling countryside. See HMS pg 5

Hay Creek Festival Still On The Fall Calendar GVWA Offers Summer Nature Day Camp While many events are being postponed or canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic, the Hay Creek Festival presented by the Hay Creek Valley Historic Association (HCVHA) at Historic Joanna Furnace Iron Works is still slated to go on this fall.

The 44th annual festival, to be presented as the Hay Creek Mini Festival, has been scaled back to two days instead of three and admission will be free, although donations will be received at the gate. The event will take place on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 12 and 13, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.

A car cruise will be featured during the Hay Creek Mini Festival at Historic Joanna Furnace Iron Works on Sept. 12 and 13. The event will also include a sale of crafts and festival foods.

According to Mark Zerr, HCVHA executive director, visitors will be able to purchase crafts from the Creekside Craft vendors and the Early American Craft area, as well festival foods that are normally sold each year, including Mabel’s soups, which will be cooked over an open fire. “It will basically be an outdoor shopping event, where people can buy crafts or food. There will be no demonstrations, and the historic buildings will not be open, Zerr noted. In addition, all parking will be on-site; there will be no shuttle bus services bringing visitors to the event. Hand sanitizing stations will be set up at on the property, and all outside vendors will be asked to provide hand sanitizer at their booths. Face coverings will be required See Hay Creek pg 5

Thanks to extensive safety protocols and procedures, youths are still able to enjoy Summer Nature Day Camp being offered by the Green Valleys Watershed Association (GVWA). Spaces are still available for the remaining two weeks of camp. Upcoming camps will include “Smooth, Slimy and Slithery, set from Monday, July 27, through Friday, July 31, and “Child Versus Wild, to be held from Monday, Aug. 3, through Friday, Aug. 7. Children can register for one or both weeks. Camp is held at Welkinweir, a 224-acre nature sanctuary and arboretum located in East Nantmeal Township. See GVWA pg 6

Walking from pg 1 turned to hiking while his gym was closed. “I like the HorseShoe Trail in French Creek State Park,” he said. “It runs basically around Hopewell Lake, Hopewell Village and Scotts Run Lake and beyond. Part of the Horse-Shoe Trail runs over to the William Penn State Forest on Buck Hollow Road.” According to www.alltrails.com, Horse-Shoe Trail, located near Geigertown, is rated as moderate and is primarily used for hiking, walking, running and nature trips. “It’s a challenge because it is flat in some places and in other places it is hilly and rocky,” Zerr added. “It’s

not such a simple pathway.” Zerr’s goal is to walk 10,000 steps a day, which he meets or exceeds on most days. “Since the pandemic started in March, (hiking) was something for me to do,” he said. “I felt like it was an (escape). It made life seem like a regular day.” Stuart Wells, who is on the Mission Trip Birdsboro committee, which is currently preparing for its service project later this month, said that he walks on the Thun Trail with his family every day. “I can now go for walks with my wife from our house near the Thun Trail down to the Union Meadows loop and back to Birds-

boro,” he explained. “We also can walk to Birdsboro’s Rustic Picnic Park, where I also take our 11-year-old son to play in Hay Creek on hot days. Sometimes we hike the trails from Route 345 over the hill through the Birdsboro Preserve to the Birdsboro Reservoir and back.” He noted that Berks County is also home to the Hopewell Big Woods. According to www.hopewellbigwoods.org, the area offers miles of trails, along with areas to fish, camp, bicycle, rock climb, hunt and go horseback riding. “We are very lucky here in southeastern Berks County in having so many nice hiking spots close by,” said Wells. “The Hopewell Big Woods Partnership network of preserves falls under the National Land Trust and has well-organized materials, trail maps and brochures available.” Another activity that Wells has resurrected since the pandemic is

mountain biking. “I’ve also recently gotten back in the saddle of my mountain bike and have been riding the Schuylkill River Trail (SRT). Many years ago, I was an avid mountain biker, and it feels good to get back to it,” he stated. “Typically I will ride the SRT up to the Brentwood Trailhead toward Reading or ride down to Pottstown Riverfront Park. I also ride the Exeter Scenic River Trail to the Neversink Mountain trails.” Wells also frequents French Creek State Park, the Antietam and Pagoda trails in Reading, the Crow’s Nest Preserve, St. Peter’s Village, the Coventry Woods Preserve and the trails at Nolde Forest Environmental Educational Center. “I feel very fortunate that we have such a wide selection of open spaces, parks and trails so close by,” he said. “Walking forest trails is incredibly refreshing and centering and helps to bring a feeling of calm.”

the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the virus that causes COVID-19. Antibodies may be found in the blood when the body is responding or has responded to an infection, such as COVID-19. Antibodies may give full or partial immunity to the virus to which they develop. However, it is not known at this time how long the body will have antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 or whether they actually give immunity to future infections from this virus. Blood samples will be sent to a third-party reference lab for antibody testing. Results will generally be available in about two to five days. Patients may opt to receive their result via text message. Otherwise, patients will be contacted by phone about the result. For most patients, there is no out-of-pocket expense for antibody testing. For insured patients, the visit will be

submitted to patients’ insurance plans. Patient First accepts all major insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. The lab will determine what, if anything, it bills the patient. For those with symptoms of COVID-19 and those who wish to determine if they have an active infection, Patient First also offers drive-up COVID-19 active virus testing at designated centers by appointment. Appointments for testing are made by calling a select designated testing center. Updates about testing sites, instructions about how to make an appointment, and other information is available at www.patientfirst.com/ covid-19-testing. All Patient First Medical Centers remain open on a walk-in basis from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily for patients who have an urgent need for medical or injury care.

The antibody test is used to determine if someone previously had COVID-19 and not to diagnose an active infection. Antibody testing is for patients who believe they may have had COVID-19 in the past, who are not currently experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, and who are at least age 5. Patient First recommends being tested at least 14 days after onset of symptoms of COVID-19 or 14 days after possible exposure, as it may take as long as two weeks for antibodies to develop. Those landing it in the pool share the prize total.” At the 2019 tournament, Russ Akinin, who is an HMS parent and a Lancaster County real estate agent, hit his first hole-inone on Hole 5, a 106-yard par 3 hole with an elevated green. The elevated green prevented him from seeing the hole from the tee box, so he was not aware that his first shot had gone in, but when he arrived at the green, he and his party realized that the ball was in the hole. The presenting sponsor for the tournament is Brubacher Inc., and the dinner sponsor is Zook Interiors. According to Melissa Beidler, director of enrollment and marketing with HMS, the goal for this year’s tournament is $10,000. Funds raised by the event will assist with the school operating budget and help make tuition costs affordable for families desiring admission. HMS, which is located at 272 Wanner Road, Ephrata, is now entering its 40th year.

The school currently serves more than 240 students from prekindergarten through 12th grade with a Christ-centered, child-focused education. Readers who would like registration and sponsorship information may visit www.hinkle townschool.org/events/golf.

Zerr said that having a mini festival will support the HCVHA’s efforts to preserve and maintain Historic Joanna Furnace, while also support the craft vendors, many of whom lost revenue during the stay-at-home order. “We’re asking the public to support us and the small businesses that make these traditional and modern crafts,” Zerr said. Modern craft vendors and early

American craft demonstrators who offer items for retail sale who want to participate in the vendor market are asked to contact Zerr at mzerr@haycreek.org. Spaces will be reserved on a firstcome, first-served basis. Historic Joanna Furnace Iron Works is located at 1250 Furnace Road, Geigertown, off Route 10, just outside Morgantown. Curbside pickup will be offered for those who wish to purchase food but not enter the festival grounds. “We will offer a meal package to take with you or if you find a spot on the property under a tree, you can eat there,” said Zerr, noting that there will be no tents with tables or chairs available where people can eat food. While there will be no mechanical engine exhibits, the event will include a cruise-in on both days. Online registration will be offered for participants at www.haycreek.org, but drive-ins will be accepted during the twoday event. “The car cruise will still go on,” Zerr reported. “Cars, trucks, motorcycles, military vehicles and tractors (are welcome), and (drivers) can park and sit with their vehicles.” There will be an HCVHA booth at the event where members of the public can buy merchandise and join the nonprofit organization. “The Morgantown Area Business Association (MABA) will have a booth and hand out bags with flyers and coupons from local businesses,” Zerr said, adding, “Casting volunteers will sell metal castings, but there will be no demonstrations.” In addition to the soups cooked over an open fire, food items will include chicken potpie, apple cider pressed on-site and baked goods homemade by HCVHA volunteers. There will also be a sale of scarecrow kits. “The items are clean and prepackaged and contain everything needed to make a scarecrow,” Zerr said, explaining that people can take a kit home to make a scarecrow

GVWA from pg 1 The camps are open to children in grades one through seven. Half-day camps for children ages 4 and 5 have been canceled this year. Through hands-on activities, campers are learning about a variety of topics, including animal adaptations, conservation, nocturnal animals, trees, birds, outdoor survival skills and more. Start and end times for each camp vary by grade group. Parents who need extended-day activities can register for beforecamp care or after-camp care for an additional fee. Dawn White, education coordinator, said that GVWA is following all safeguards and guidelines from the state to ensure all campers and staff members have a fun and safe experience. “It’s impossible to keep (campers) distanced at all times, so we decided to go with masks after the governor’s order came out July 1,” she explained. “(Campers) are in masks outdoors, but we have many activities where they do not have to wear them.” Some of these weekly activities inclue Sharks and Minnows; hide and seek tag games, with pool noodles to keep distance; water relays; crafts and science experiments; and stream and pond searches. “In addition, campers do not wear masks when at their tables within their meeting sites, as they sit 6 feet apart from each other to eat lunch, take snack breaks and make crafts,” White noted. A document outlining all of the camp’s special rules for summer can be found by visiting www.greenvalleys.org/summer -nature-day-camp and choosing “Health and Safety Plan_rev. 7.7.20.” Some of the guidelines include the following: campers will be kept together in the same small groups (limited to 12 children), by grade, with the same staff members, including one senior counselor throughout each day for the entire week; each group will have its own objects for craft projects and games that will be shared between group members only and sanitized after each use; and each group will have its own supplies and site equipment. There is also a supply of hand sanitizer for the campers and a hand washing station. Guest educators on hand to present programs must maintain at least a 10-foot distance. For additional information about camp and to inquire about availability, readers may contact White at 610-469-8646 or dwhite@greenvalleys.org. To celebrate the summer solstice, residents at the Heritage of Green Hills engaged in a silly summer snowball fight using homemade yarn “snowballs.” Mask-wearing seniors at the healthy life plan community in Shillington pelted Well By Design director Cheryl Anderson, who was dressed in a penguin costume, as she rode by on the back of a truck. Staff member Christina Orlando assisted Anderson in throwing

snowballs back at the residents. After the socially distant mock battle ended, the snowballs were repurposed for use in a treasure hunt. Anderson transformed the balls of yarn into hedgehogs by adding noses and googly eyes and hid them around the campus for residents to find in the coming days. For more information about the facility, readers may visit www.HeritageOfGreenHills.com.

Funders Work Together To Provide Aid To Nonprofits Funders in Chester County have joined forces to provide coronavirus (COVID-19) rapid response funds to organizations serving the community. To date, Chester County based funders have awarded more than $1.5 million in immediate grants to Chester County-based nonprofit organizations. Responding to the increased demand for funding from essential nonprofits, local foundations raised funding from their charitable partners and designated internal funds to fill these needs. Grant funding has been directed to nonprofits that have responded to Chester County residents’ need for food, shelter, medical supplies and emergency services, among others. Funders are working together to ensure grant information is shared, organization funding is transparent and communitybased grant panels are making decisions to direct funds to high impact organizations. The funders have turned their attention to grant funding that will ensure long-term financial sustainability of partner nonprofits. The Brandywine Health Foundation (BWHF) launched the Healthcare and Economic Relief Fund in March to address the health and economic impacts of the coronavirus pandemic on the greater Coatesville community. Due to many donations, BWHF granted more than $185,000 to 19 nonprofit partner organizations in its first phase of grants. Funding was used to provide food and personal care items, to fulfill medical needs and to facilitate online learning during the early weeks of the coronavirus pandemic. In phase two of its grant-making efforts, the BWHF’s focus is on recovery. Current funding will support eligible 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations with general operating grants as they rebuild their capacity. BWHF expects to award a total of more than $350,000 in phase one and phase two grantmaking. More information about the BWHF is available at www.brandywine foundation.org. The Chester County Community Foundation (CCCF) has awarded close to $450,000 in COVID-19 grant funding to more than 90 organizations via CCCF’s Rapid Response Fund and through the generosity of more than 400 donor advised funds. Local grant panels have been meeting weekly via Zoom to review grant applications and award funding. Many individuals, regional foundations and corporate donors have also offered financial support to CCCF’s COVID-19 Rapid Response Fund. To learn more about the CCCF, readers may visit www.chescocf.org. In addition to the nearly $200,000 given in grants to local nonprofits this year, Chester County Fund for Women & Girls

(CCFWG) committed $23,000 in Impact Grants toward response efforts to COVID-19 that are focused on the needs of women and girls such as gender-based violence and economic empowerment. As the long-term impact continues to unfold, CCFWG will utilize the next Blueprint Report to analyze the data measuring the impact of COVID-19 by gender, age and race to uncover targeted and responsive solutions for members of the community.

The organization’s website, www.ccwomenandgirls.org, also has resources which specifically address the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on women and girls. The Phoenixville Community Health Foundation (PCHF) board of directors created a COVID-19 Special Grant Fund to assist local nonprofit organizations in providing critical services during the pandemic. All undesignated grant funds were
