Erika and Ian Kanter, shown with their daughter, Lilliana, lead Anchored by Grace Ministries, which provides clothing and accessories, as well as toiletries, free of charge to people in need through its mobile clothing closet.
What started out as a one-time clothing drive at Morgantown Community Church (MCC) has now evolved and grown into a full-time clothing ministry, Anchored by Grace Ministries. Through its mobile clothing closet, Anchored by Grace Ministries provides clothing and accessories, as well as toiletries, free of charge to people in need. The trailer is open on select days at MCC, at the Twin Valley Food Pantry, at the Honey Brook Food Pantry and at CrossNet Ministries in New Holland. Erika Kanter, who runs the mobile clothing pantry with her husband, Ian, explained that the community service ministry started in August 2016. “We wanted to help people in need, and when our pastor announced that they
were collecting food, I (suggested that we collect) clothing as well,” said Erika. “I was a fashion student, and I love clothing.” She noted that the food and clothing were distributed the first time in Reading at the corner of 11th and Spruce streets before the trailer was constructed. “It was supposed to be a one-time thing, but it was apparent, especially through a lot of prayer, that there was a need not being met,” Erika said. “I had the vision of the mobile unit where we would be on wheels to get to people in need instead of them having to find a way to get to us.” MCC sponsored the trailer, which took nearly a year to complete. Then, on July 4, 2018, Anchored by Grace Ministries moved into the former Warwick Bible Church in Elverson. “We kept clothing in our house - basement, See Mobile Clothing Closet pg 7

TOPS from pg 1 Sally Kieffer. “The meetings start at 9:15 a.m., and we have a pledge to agree that we’re going to take off pounds sensibly. This is not is a diet or quick fix. We do have guidelines if people want to use them. After (the pledge), we do a roll call. During that time, we say our name and whether we gained or lost weight, but we don’t have to say how much. When someone loses weight, we cheer, and if they didn’t, we tell them, ‘Today is a new day.’” The program leader then offers a program related to health and wellness. “We have talked about how water is important to wellness, some exercises that we can do that are low-impact, something to help with motivation or how to handle (eating) during a holiday,” said Kieffer.
“These are actual programs given to the leader by TOPS.” Members are asked to pay a yearly fee, which goes to TOPS International. The local chapter also collects a nominal due each week. “We welcome new members any time, and they may attend one meeting free of charge to see if they are interested,” said Kieffer. “There’s no pressure. You can observe the meeting and come back the next week to join.” Many chapter members come from the immediate surrounding area of Elverson, Honey Brook and Morgantown, but other members are from Coatesville, New Holland, Birdsboro, Reading and Narvon. “The ages in our group range from early 30s to mid-80s. We have an average
attendance of about 16 to 18 (people),” Kieffer pointed out. She said that the chapter has been meeting locally for at least 30 years. “We used to meet at the West Nantmeal Township Building and then we met at Elverson Borough Hall, but we outgrew those facilities,” Kieffer stated. “The Torch allows us to meet there. It helps their community-based ministry, and it helps us. Occasionally, the (TOPS participants) will collect money and supplies for The Torch to help them because we appreciate them letting us meet there.” Those who pay the membership fee receive a free monthly magazine from TOPS International and information about online resources. “We encourage people to utilize the online resources,” Kieffer said. “There is an opportunity if you don’t want to meet at a local chapter you

People by joining one of our groups.” She said that once it was decided to make the booklet free to everyone, it was updated and reworked. “(Unemployed people) are from all over the United States,” noted Spaulding. “The principles that it covers are germane to anyone who loses their job, no matter where they are.” Different sections of the document were written by people from the community, such as mental health professionals. “We have a lot of experts from the community who volunteered their time to write sections. It took almost a year to get it updated,” Spaulding noted. Spaulding said that the newly unemployed or those who had never lost a job before can particularly benefit from the book. “It covers mental health issues, financial issues and how to network. People don’t think about all that, but it’s part of the process,” she said. The first section of the booklet
also a section devoted to maintaining physical and emotional well-being when unemployed. One section titled “The Job Search Process” covers resume writing and how to write a cover letter. It also offers tips on job interview skills. Also covered are various websites used during internet job searches, as well as the importance of networking at local job fairs. Interspersed throughout the booklet are inspirational quotes, prayers and passages from Scripture. The booklet concludes with a section about when a person finally is able to return to work, asking him or her to reflect on the journey and think about what they learned during the experience. “There is absolutely no faithbased guide like this that I am aware of anywhere,” Spaulding commented. “It takes a person from the day they lose their job through to a new position. There will introductory golf lessons, and you will learn how to swing a club. The panel discussion at the end will include food, beverages and live music. “It will end in one big networking social experience, Horvath said. “You don’t have to be a great golfer. Library from pg 1 The Pennsylvania Library Association announced that Chester County Library has been recognized as a Gold Star Library. In achieving the PA Forward Gold Star designation, the Chester County Library has demonstrated a commitment to helping citizens improve their quality of life and achieve greater success in all vital roles of life and providing programs to enhance five identified types of knowledge or key literacies believed to be essential to success: basic, information, civic and social, health, and financial. PA Forward, launched statewide in 2012, works through the five key literacies to assist individuals in enhancing their overall quality of life. To continue helping libraries use PA Forward to demonstrate all their libraries offer, in January 2017, the association kicked off the Star Library program statewide. The Star Library recognition offers support to libraries that participate and integrate PA Forward’s literacies in their programming activities. Those libraries are recognized for meeting benchmarks within the bronze, silver, and gold star levels of the program. While one star is awarded for both the bronze and gold levels, a total of five stars are awarded in the silver category - one silver star for each of the five literacies of PA Forward. For more information, including a complete listing of all libraries participating in the program, readers may visit www.paforwardstarlibraries.org. PHEAA recently announced that its investment of nearly $33 million into the PA Targeted Industry Program (PA-TIP) has helped approximately 8,500 Pennsylvania students achieve an education in the high-demand fields of energy, advanced materials, diversified manufacturing, agriculture, and food production. PA-TIP was created by the state in 2012 to help develop an educated and well-trained workforce, and 2018-19 marks the sixth consecutive year that PHEAA has fully funded the program for the commonwealth without any taxpayer support. For 2018-19, PHEAA’s board of directors allocated $6 million dollars from the agency’s business earnings to fund PA-TIP awards to approximately 1,600 Pennsylvania students. For the current award year, participants are receiving a maximum award of $4,123 and an average award of award of $1,979. PA-TIP recipients attend a variety of eligible schools throughout Pennsylvania, including business, trade, and technical schools; career and technology centers; community colleges; and 2-year private schools. These students would otherwise not be eligible for a need-based Pennsylvania State Grant award because their programs of study do not qualify. PA-TIP provides those students interested in short-term certificate programs with an accessible funding option that See PA-TIP pg 8

As early as 1742, Jesuit missionaries had visited the borough of New Holland to celebrate Mass. By 1916, Redemptorist missionaries working out of Ephrata purchased a buggy in New Holland to be used for parish visitations. On July 27, 1919, Father William White celebrated High Mass as pastor of St. Rita’s Chapel, which was located in the Showalter Building, 209 E. Main St., New Holland, now the home of a clock shop and an ice cream restaurant. St. Rita’s congregation eventually founded Our Lady of Lourdes. On Saturday, July 27, at 5 p.m., members of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 150 Water St., New Holland, will celebrate a Mass in honor of the church’s 100th anniversary. Bishop Ronald Gainer and previous church pastors will officiate, and a special commemorative program will be presented. A celebratory meal will follow in the Parish Hall. tion will give attendees an overview of church history. Current and former parishioners are invited to attend this special event. Additional activities that are planned to celebrate the anniversary will include a Parish Centennial Picnic in September. For October, church members plan to create a centennial-themed church float and take part in the New Holland Farmers Fair Parade, which will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 2. For November, an Altar of Remembrance and Wall of Remembrance will be created to include photos of pastors and parishioners from the past. More activities are planned into 2020, including a bus trip to the St. John Neumann Shrine in Philadelphia, where information related to the church’s Redemptorist beginnings may be found. Parishioner and centennial celebration organizer Yvonne McGee noted that the order of Redemptorist priests played an important part in the church’s origins. The Redemptorists are an order of the Catholic church dedicated to missionary work. “That is an important part of our
heritage,” said McGee, who noted that the stained glass windows in the church reflect the Redemptorist beginnings. The Redemptorist missionaries who purchased an Ephrata farm in 1914 to serve as a mission house were instrumental in the founding of parishes including St. Anthony’s in Lancaster, Our Mother of Perpetual Help in Ephrata, and St. James in Lititz. “We are all very related still,” noted McGee of those churches. McGee noted that in 1920, the St. Rita’s Chapel, which was named for a St. Rita’s relic that remains on the church altar today, had grown too small, and the congregation moved to the third floor, renaming the church St. Theresa’s of Lisieux. Our Lady of Lourdes retains the statue of St. Theresa that represented the namesake in that meeting space. During the time period between 1920 and 1940, church members worked to raise funds to construct a church building in the New Holland area. In July 1940, groundbreaking was held at 149 W. Conestoga St., now the home of the First Baptist Church. The first Mass was said in the church in celebration of Christmas Day in 1940. By 1971, the congregation had
once again outgrown the church, and overflow Masses were being held in the Ritz Theater on Main Street. In 1972, the church on Water Street was completed. The church was expanded in 2010 with the addition of the Parish Center. Father Steve Fauser serves as the current pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes, where Masses are held at 5 p.m. on Saturdays and at 7:30, 9, and 10:30 a.m. on Sundays from June through Labor Day. Daily Masses are held at 9 a.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays and at 6:30 p.m. on Thursdays. Masses are also held on the first Saturday of each month at 9 a.m. Readers who would like to learn more about the church or the centennial celebration activities may visit http://ourlady oflourdesnh.com. Pictured on front: The centennial committee of Our Lady of Lourdes Church has planned a number of activities to celebrate the church’s 100th anniversary. Among these is a special Mass to be said by Bishop Ronald Gainer (not pictured) at 5 p.m. on July 27. The Mass will be followed by a celebratory meal.

Simple, delicious flavors are often the crux of country cooking. While fried chicken, grits, and leafy green vegetables are hallmarks of country cooking, particularly in the Southern region of the United States, many different ingredients can be used to create countryinspired meals. Pork is a mainstay of many country dinner tables. This recipe for Pork Chops with Butter Bean Salad from “Real Simple Dinner Tonight: Done!” (Time Home Entertainment) by Allie Lewis Clapp and Lygeia Grace is a great representation of a simple, yet tasty meal.

units for people to safely dispose of their unwanted prescription drugs. The partnership with Google is one of several initiatives Rite Aid has implemented as part of its comprehensive strategy to address prescription drug abuse and misuse. In 2017, The Rite Aid Foundation launched the KidCents Safe Medication Disposal program. The program provides law enforcement agencies in communities served by Rite Aid with free medication disposal units for individuals to safely dispose of expired or unwanted medications. Since its launch, the program has expanded to 18 states. To date, the foundation has partnered with more than 400 law enforcement agencies to make more than 450 units available to customers and communities. In 2018, Rite Aid announced plans to install 100 medication disposal units in stores across the country. In addition to medication disposal units, The Rite Aid Foundation’s KidCents program has made a multi-year commitment to the Prescription Drug Safety program, a digital course about prescription drug abuse prevention. Developed by EVERFI, the course uses an evidence-based public health approach to empower high school students with the skills and knowledge they need to make safe and healthy decisions about prescription drugs and prevent abuse before it occurs. As a result of The Rite Aid Foundation’s commitment, the Prescription Drug Safety program will be made available to more than 400 high schools in California, Michigan, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington at no cost. Rite Aid also has several instore initiatives to help address the growing epidemic of prescription drug abuse and misuse. Rite Aid offers DisposeRx packets at all its pharmacies. DisposeRx packets contain a biodegradable powder that, when mixed with water in the prescription vial, dissolves drugs, forming a viscous gel that may be safely discarded in the trash. Rite Aid pharmacists also strive to collaborate on appropriate pain management therapy decisions with patients’ prescribers. All patients with new opioid prescriptions receive required counseling on their prescriptions. Rite Aid also participates in prescription drug monitoring programs and provides ongoing education and training about prescription drug misuse and abuse to its more than 5,000 pharmacists. Additionally, naloxone, the opioid overdose reversal medication, is now available in all Rite Aid pharmacies without a prescription. For more information on the KidCents program, readers may visit www.kidcents.com. Additional information about Rite Aid can be found at www.riteaid.com.

company’s e-commerce strategy. In February, the company opened a 38,000-squarefoot Giant Direct e-commerce hub in Lancaster that serves as a central shipping location for online delivery orders in the region. The hub also permits customers to place orders on-site via electronic tablets allowing for pedestrian pickup as well as the traditional car curbside pickup. The e-commerce effort has continued over the past five months, as Giant has added Giant Direct to stores across its network. Giant Direct provides customers with a wide assortment of products with the same quality and service available from local Giant stores and Martin’s Food Markets, now combined with the technology of Peapod. Online customers can shop for thousands of items, including private label products, national products, fresh produce, meat and seafood, deli meats and cheeses, natural foods, gluten-free foods, organic foods, household items and even rotisserie chicken. By linking their Bonus Card, customers can earn Gas Extra Rewards on qualifying purchases and can redeem their digital coupons to save on groceries. All orders are hand-picked by associates. To place an order with Giant Direct, customers can use any device to visit www.giantdirect.com or use the Giant app, enter their ZIP code and begin shopping. Before checking out, they will be asked to select either delivery or pickup. As the service rolls out, new customers will receive promotional offers that include free delivery or pickup for a trial period and a discount on their first order. Through openings to date and additional locations planned for the remainder of the year, customers across 90% of the company’s footprint will have access to online grocery ordering and delivery services. “Mary Poppins Jr.” from pg 1 By Ann Mead Ash
Cavod Academy’s second 2019 summer musical theater camp has yet to begin, but Cordell Huyard, who will direct the camp’s production of “Mary Poppins Jr.,” is already praising the cast. “The cast is already blending well,” said Cordell, noting that the group had met for a read-through. “This is one of the strongest dance groups we have ever had in a junior show. We have a lot of triple threats in this cast,” he said, referring to performers who are proficient at singing, dancing, and acting. The cast, which is made up of Lancaster County students ages 10 to 18, will begin rehearsals at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim, on Monday, July 29. Camp will run through Friday, Aug. 9. Performances will be held at The Junction Center on Saturday, Aug. 10, and Sunday, Aug. 11, at 2 and 7 p.m. each day. “Mary Poppins,” a musical, is based on the book by P.L. Travers, which is the pen name adopted by Helen Lyndon Goff, a British novelist whose childhood experiences provided inspiration for the story of Mary Poppins. Travers’ books were adapted by Walt Disney in 1964 into a musical film starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. The stage musical ran on Broadway from 2006 to 2013.
The play tells the story of the Banks family in London. The family is struggling with two difficult children, Jane and Michael, played by Cate Caplan and Josiah Henne, respectively. The children have managed to derail every nanny their parents have hired. While George Banks, played by Charlie Hill, insists on a strict nanny, the children are intrigued when the mysterious Mary Poppins, played by Celeste Huyard, appears at their doorstep. Following her lead, the children experience a series of memorable adventures, accompanied by Mary’s sidekick, Bert, played by Gavin Haas, that impact the entire family, including the mother, Winifred Banks, played by Hannah Whisman. Cordell said he chose the classic show because of the fun experience it will offer campers and because of the wisdom it offers to people of all ages. “There are great lessons in it,” noted Cordell. He also wanted to introduce campers to the efforts required to produce a rigorous show such as “Mary Poppins.” “The challenges are living up to the expectation, making it your own, and capturing the magic of Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke,” said Cordell. “(There’s a challenge in) bringing (the show) to life on stage (with a cast of) young people.”
mobility, and reducing congestion can be considered for funding. Municipalities submitted 134 applications, totaling almost $38 million in requests. Projects were selected based on criteria such as benefits and effectiveness, cost, local and regional impact, and cost sharing. This investment brings the

The approved projects include East Whiteland Township in Chester County: $71,216 to maintain and improve safety by deploying portable traffic control signals at desirable locations throughout the township.

According to Cordell, the play is somewhat different from the well-known movie, with a few songs added and others changed slightly, but keeping all the magic of the original. “All the things you love are in there,” said Cordell, who listed “A Spoonful of Sugar,” “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” “Step in Time,” and “Chim Chim Cher-ee” among the many musical numbers. Music direction for the show will be provided by Amy Rau, and Stephanie Morales will choreograph the dance numbers. Cordell invites area families to make the trip to Manheim to see the show. “Bring the children to The Junction Center,” he said. “It’s a cool space, and you get to see where WJTL broadcasts from.” Tickets, which are discounted for students age 17 and under, may be purchased in advance at https://cavod.org or by calling 717-354-3355. Second Annual Wizard Faire Set
Kratz Attends Conference
By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
After a successful debut last year that exceeded expectations, the second annual Di-Atglen Alley Wizard Faire is returning bigger and better. The popular event, held as a fundraiser by the Atglen Public Library (APL), will take place on Saturday, July 27, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 121 W. Main St., Atglen. This year, the “Wizard Academy” area will grow and take over more space. There will be more vendors this year, along with new attractions. The event is designed to be fun for people of all ages. Activities will include bounce houses and water tunnels, crafts such as wand-making, face painting and other creative activities. There will also be fun “classes” in potions, herbology, care of magical creatures and divinations. Visitors will also be able to Carl Poppaduck (back), shown with Noah Fryberger, will again enjoy various performances, portray a wizard at the Di-Atglen Alley Wizard Faire to be held including a magic show with Professor Snark and a program with on July 27 by Atglen Public Library.
live owls. There will be Wizard Quizzo; questions will be centered around the “Harry Potter” book series. “(The performances are) free to the public. We don’t want anybody to stay home because of the cost. We want kids to come and have a blast,” said Erin Metzler, planning committee chair and library board member. New this year for youngsters will be the Triple Tricks Tournament where children who complete a maze, a cornhole event and a scavenger hunt will receive a prize. Also new is a costume contest with prizes in three ages groups: 12 and under, 13 to 17 and adult. Shoppers can visit the Di-Atglen Alley Shoppes, and there will be a sale of food and beverages, including Rita’s Italian Ice and Walk-o Taco. “We have a ton of stuff for (attendees) to do free. The dollars that they do spend support Atglen Public Library,” Metzler said. Last year, the escape room proved to be such a popular attraction that it has been expanded this year beyond just July 27. All new, the theme this year is “Escape the Potion Master’s Office.” People may reserve a spot in the escape room schedule in advance for Saturday during the Wizard Faire. There will also be escape-roomonly hours on Friday, July 26, and Sunday, July 28. Timed tickets may be purchased in advance by calling APL at 610-593-6848. For more information about the Wizard Faire, readers may call APL or visit www.atglen publiclibrary.org. A schedule of events can be found at www. facebook.com/DiAtglenAlley.
