Local Author Describes His “Different Life” BY FRANCINE FULTON

“If you want me to be unhappy, pity me,” said author Dave Eby of Ephrata, when describing his visual impairment to members of Senior Connections, a group that meets monthly at Conestoga

boat to a national park, viewing wildlife up close and visiting a local elementary school. The students were accompanied by teacher chaperones Erin Kregar from Cocalico High School, Jennifer Bilby from Pequea Valley High School and Elizabeth Techman from Twin Valley High School. Every other year, local students have the opportunity to travel to Costa Rica in a travel cohort made up of local school students. The trip is presented by WorldStrides, a student travel company. “ We have been doing these trips every other year since 2014,” ex plained Techman. “We haven’t gone since 2018. This trip was canceled twice. It had to happen (this year),

and it was wonderful.” Highlights of the trip included staying near the Tortuguero National Park, which is only accessible by boat through the canals; ziplining in Monteverde; hiking in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve; visiting the Toucan Rescue Ranch; taking a night hike to witness animal life after dark; taking part in a cooking lesson at Santuario Ecológico Monteverde; spending the day in Manuel Antonio National Park; and viewing exotic animals in their natural habitats, including monkeys, lizards, sloths and birds such as tiger herons, anhingas, ibis and motmots. In Tortuguero, the students spent the morning at an elementary school, where they visited the local students and learned about their day. They also donated supplies to the school, which they brought from home.

A tradition that began 38 years ago on the first Saturday in August will continue as the Caernarvon Historical Society presents Churchtown Day on Saturday, Aug. 6. The event will feature community yard sales along with breakfast and lunch items prepared at the Caernarvon Fire Company.

Mennonite Church. “Pity is a bad thing because pity means (you) are sorry for me. I would say empathy is a much better thing. With empathy comes understanding and compassion.” Eby, who is legally blind, is the author of “A Different Life,” his memoir, which describes all that he was able to accomplish despite his visual challenges. These achievements include working on the family farm, playing football in high school and wresting in college. Most recently, Eby taught English to college students in China from 2008 to 2020. He began his remarks by addressing the most common question that people ask him, which is about how well he can see. “I can see the people in the room, but for the people in the back, I can’t see your faces very well,” he said. “I could not describe you, but I know you are there.” “I am legally blind, which is good, because I would not want to do it illegally,” he added with a smile.

Churchtown Day from pg 1

MORGANTOWN - HONEY BROOK

People will be invited to shop for bargains at yard sales that will begin at 7 a.m. on Route 23 in Churchtown, as well as in neighboring communities. “It’s amazing what you find,” said Yvonne Styer, historical society president and historian. Caernarvon Historical Society will also host a flea market at its property, 2148 Main St., Narvon, and at the property next door, at Caernarvon Township Park, which is where the Caernarvon Elementary School once stood. Sales will be held both inside and outside the historical society building. Bottled water will also be offered for sale. “Items are donated by members of our society,” said Styer, noting that she and other members put items aside throughout the year in preparation for Churchtown Day. “We accumulate a lot of stuff. We have anything and everything. We will have all kind of different books, kitchen (items) and glassware.”

to challenge my mind.” For the August hunt, participants will sign up online, where they will receive a list of rules and regulations. There is no limit to the number of people who can be on a team, Mitzel noted, and the prize token will be hidden somewhere in Pennsylvania. “It will not be hidden somewhere dangerous. It will be in a public place, not on private property,” she remarked, adding that accommodations will be made for people with disabilities who want to participate if they contact Mitzel ahead of time for details. At 11 a.m. on Aug. 6, a riddle will be released to all participants, and the hunt will begin. If no team finds the treasure that day, additional clues will be released every 24 hours until someone wins. Mitzel’s advice for the winning team? “Your team can be as big as you like, but think about how many people you

want to split the prize money with,” she said. “And use the internet once you have the clue. You’re going to need it.” She also noted that tickets are limited, so the pool of participants will be on the smaller size, increasing the chances of winning. After the Pennsylvania hunt, Mitzel is organizing statewide hunts in Delaware on Saturday, Aug. 13, and Maryland on Saturday, Aug. 20. Next year, she hopes to expand the treasure hunt to even more states. “This treasure could be right in your town,” she said. “It could be yours for the taking.” To sign up for Treasure Adventures, visit www.my treasureadventures.com. Tickets may be purchased through Friday, Aug. 5, or until sold out. For more information, call 717-500-1199 or email info@mytreasure adventures.com.

On Saturday, Aug. 6, a treasure hunt will kick off throughout the state. The prize will be $6,000 for the winner and financial support for three nonprofits. Treasure Adventures will feature a statewide team hunt for a prize token, with proceeds from ticket sales benefiting The Tourist Inn Benefit Committee in Hellam, the York office of Make-A-Wish and Give Kids The World Village, a resort for families in central Florida. The event is hosted by Tammy Mitzel, who founded Treasure Adventures in 2020. “I am so excited to be hosting (the) treasure hunt as a way to give back to three great charities that have supported my own family,” said Mitzel, who lives in Wrightsville and is the parent of a Wish child. “They have given us so many wonderful lifelong memories. … This is our way of paying it forward so that these groups can continue to bring happiness and hope to families who need it most.” Mitzel got the idea for Treasure Adventures after participating in a nationwide treasure hunt sponsored by the inventor of Jelly Belly a couple of years ago. “I was disappointed, not that I didn’t win, but that I didn’t figure it out,” she stated. “I don’t like to give up.” In 2013, Mitzel participated in “Wheel of Fortune,” and she won big. “I’ve always been into brain teasers and word puzzles,” she said. “I love

Agricultural Conservation Easements Available

Chester County has preserved more than 43,000 acres of agricultural land.

The Chester County Agricultural Land Preservation Board is accepting applications for two competitive programs funded by the Chester County commissioners: the Commonwealth/County Program and the Chester County Challenge Grant Program. To date, more than 560 farms totaling more than 43,000 acres have been preserved in Chester County through these two programs. Both the Commonwealth/ County Program and the Chester County Challenge Grant Program offer funds to qualifying Chester County farm owners who are interested in

preserving their farm. The County pays farm owners for their development rights in exchange for a permanent agricultural conservation easement on their land. The owner still owns the land and can sell it or pass it on to the next generation if it remains in agriculture. Farms with 10 acres or more of tillable land are eligible for both programs if they are adjacent to other permanently preserved land. For farms not adjacent to permanently preserved

land, the acreage minimums are 35 acres for the Commonwealth/County Program and 25 acres for the Challenge Grant Program. The application deadline for both programs is Friday, Aug. 5. For more information, including applications and program guidelines, visit www .chesco.org/4618/Farmland -Preservation or contact Geoff Shellington, Chester County agricultural programs coordinator, at 610-344-6504 or gshellington@chesco.org.

the idea for “Rock the Library” was spearheaded by the sponsorship of Iron Mountains, a local company that has been helping to renovate the library with indoor and now outdoor projects. The outside gardens were in need of care, so the company decided it would donate time to hardscape the front gardens. Iron Mountains began the garden makeover on July 22. At the event on July 30, the Friends of the Village Library

will invite families to donate a fee per rock to which they can add messages or images of positivity. This is the first phase of what hopes to be an eventual outdoor story area. The library has already received new wooden seating for the outdoor story area, which was donated by Wolf Creek Live Edge. “Rock the Library” is a rain-or-shine event. No registration is required. Fraud Prevention Workshops Held For Seniors To help prevent fraud targeting seniors, the Chester County Sheriff ’s Office (CCSO) recently collaborated with the SeniorLAW Center of Chester County and local senior centers to present workshops titled “Senior Fraud: Protect Yourself and Your Loved Ones.” The workshops were planned in connection with World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, June 15, which was a time to focus on protecting seniors from

abuse, fraud, violence, negligence and other harm. The hourlong program was presented on June 8 at the West Chester Senior Center, on June 14 at Brandywine Valley Active Aging (BVAA) Downingtown Senior Center and on June 21 at BVAA Coatesville Senior Center. Attendees heard about different types of scams, who is affected, signs to look for and whom to call if one suspects he or she is being targeted.

Chester County Sheriff Fredda Maddox warned community members to beware of callers who request money or gift cards, claiming that a relative of the victim has been or will be imprisoned. She added that law enforcement officers do not request money or sensitive information by phone. Community members should also be wary if a scammer tries to create a feeling of urgency, noted Victoria Long, legal advocate at the SeniorLAW

Costa Rica from pg 1 “(Most of the students) enjoyed the school visit. When kids get together with kids, it’s magical,” said Techman. “A lot of kids enjoyed the cooking lesson. For other kids it was the flora and fauna and the nature. Manuel Antonio National Park is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, which is how we ended our trip.” “Every day there was a surprise,” Techman continued. “We had the most amazing healthy food every single day. And the people are so nice.

cohort allows students from local schools to meet one another and form friendships. “Our kids are similar. They are rural/suburban kids, so we make a group together and travel together and they make lifelong friends,” said Techman. “It was wonderful and the kids were wonderful. I would travel anywhere with this group.” She added that the cohort of traveling teachers will soon be planning for the 2024 trip.

Local Author from pg 1 He said that not having the best vision led him to discover coping skills, such as becoming a better listener. “God did not give me good eyesight, but He gives us other things,” said Eby. “We need to celebrate Jesus because no matter the situation we are in with Him, He can take us through it and lead us into a life that goes far beyond our expectations.” Eby said that he wanted study English in college with the goal of becoming a teacher, but he decided to study business instead. “(I believed) my eyesight would keep me from being a teacher. How can I manage a classroom if I can’t see the students?” he said. He graduated from college in 1991 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

After he worked in construction at CM Weaver and then at a transportation company, a cousin suggested that he get involved with Youth Evangelism Service (YES), a program sponsored by Eastern Mennonite Missions. His first assignment with YES was in Mexico. “Suddenly, I was the same as everybody else because I could travel and go places by myself,” Eby noted. “In Ephrata, I always needed to arrange a ride.” After YES, he worked at Paul B. Zimmerman for 13 years. As a member of Indiantown Mennonite Church in Ephrata, which he still attends, he got involved with the youth group and was the church’s first youth pastor. In 2006, he was asked by the church deacon to accompany
