Keeping Busy While Staying At Home By Francine Fulton
Trying out a new recipe, cleaning out drawers and closets, taking up an old hobby and trying their hands at arts and crafts are just some of the activities that local residents spent time on during the stay-athome order. As a tribute to her late husband, Richard Gilfillan, Frances Gilfillan, who resides in the Tel Hai Retirement Community in Honey Brook, created 25 pillows from her late husband’s shirts, pants and jeans. “He passed away in November 2019, and after deep thought I decided to make this my project, she said. “Fortunately, I was getting started on this when the virus struck, and I was counseled at Tel Hai to stay at home unless

absolutely necessary to go out. Making the pillows was extremely helpful in passing the time and actually very relaxing. Like a quilt, the pillows consist of a front design made of squares and a back layer with padding in between. “I cut squares and rectangles for two and a half days and then made a pattern, she explained. “When I had the pattern, I sewed each of them together. For example, if I had 30 squares, I took one row and sewed them together and then sewed the rows together. Most of the backs are made that you can use either side as decorative pillows because they are pretty also. Gilfillan distributed the pillows to her husband’s family members, including his grandchildren. “I wasn’t allowed visitors when I first started, so I took pictures of (the pillows) and texted them photos and they could see and choose the one they wanted, she noted. Cavod Camp To Stage “Frozen Jr. Cavod Academy’s summer musical theater camp for youths ages 10 to 18 has yet to begin, but Alexander Weaver, who will make his first directorial solo effort for the organization, is looking
forward to overseeing the camp and producing “Frozen Jr. at Cavod Academy of the Arts, 665 W. Main St., New Holland. Camp will be held at the venue from Monday, Aug. 3, through Friday, Aug. 14. “The fun is being able to teach students and interacting with the cast and the production crew, said Weaver. “I love summer camps, (especially) the feel of being able to put on a show, play games, and just connect. Three performances of the musical, based on the 2018 Broadway version of the Disney animated film, will be held for the public in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, in the 400 block of Jackson Street, New Holland, on Friday, Aug. 14; Saturday, Aug. 15; and Sunday, Aug. 16, at 8 p.m. each day. “Frozen Jr. brings royal sisters Elsa and Anna, See “Frozen Jr. pg 3

Remembering Pets As Owners Go Back To Work By Francine Fulton
Local artist Anna Carter has been sharing her love of art by offering online classes.
The stay-at-home order meant that families were spending more quality time with their pets - more walks, more hugs and kisses and more playtime. With many pet owners now going back to work, it is important for them to help acclimate their furry friends especially dogs - to the change. “People need to slowly transition, said Jennifer Schulte, a volunteer who handles dog adoptions at Main Line Animal Rescue (MLAR). “You should work up to it. Leave your dog for 15 minutes and then an hour. Let them see that mommy comes back - just like (you would with) children. It’s also best to make sure their exercise needs are met. See Pets pg 2
Community Invited To Virtual Town Tours By Francine Fulton
Each summer, local residents and visitors to the area enjoy taking part in the Chester County Planning Commission’s Town Tours and Village Walks program, which provides guided tours of local points of interest in the county. For 2020, the program, now in its 26th year, has been transitioned to a completely virtual experience due to COVID-19. The new virtual summer series is designed to highlight Chester County’s cultural heritage, while keeping health and safety issues in mind. The virtual program began on July 16 with a talk on the art and architecture in Phoenixville. The remaining
“Live at Five programs will begin at 5 p.m. on Thursdays throughout July and August. The programs will take place virtually through Zoom, a free video conferencing software for use with computers, tablets and cellphones. “The program at 5 p.m. seeks to replicate as best we can the See Town Tours pg 7

The American Kennel Club (AKC) offers additional tips for pet owners at www.akc.org. The AKC suggests maintaining social distance from a pet dog by encouraging them to spend more time in their own bed, outside in a fenced yard by themselves or in their crate while performing a task nearby. The behavior should be rewarded with praise and a treat. The AKC also noted that dogs should be provided plenty of exercise before their owners go to work and that they should be given interactive toys, including
puzzle toys and chew toys. If possible, dog owners should come home during the workday to walk their dog and visit with them before going back to work. Schulte reported that adoption applications increased during the time of quarantine, when many people were looking for a companion while at home. MLAR refrained from doing adoptions for about a month during the quarantine and the pets in the shelter were temporarily placed in foster homes. “Applications were up twentyfold,” she said.

“We had so many applications I could not keep up.” MLAR, a no-kill animal shelter based in the Chester Springs area, is an affiliate of the Pennsylvania SPCA. It specializes in the rescue and placement of abused, unwanted and abandoned companion animals. “We get dogs from owner surrender and from other shelters and we get them from puppy mills,” Schulte noted. “(Those interesting in adoption should) put in an application. We call them to do an interview and call their vet reference and then they come in for an appointment.” All of the animals at MLAR are up to date on their shots and are microchipped and spayed or neutered before going home. Pets under 6 months old may come back to MLAR for a free spay/neuter. Due to social distancing, no new volunteers will be accepted at MLAR until next year. However, the community may support the organization by making a donation or attending MLAR fundraisers.
The next fundraiser will be a Drive-In Movie Night, to be held on Saturday, Aug. 15, on MLAR’s 60-acre farm at 1149 Pike Springs Road, Phoenixville. The featured movie will “The Sandlot,” which follows the adventures of Scottie Smalls and his friends who play baseball at a sandlot. Gates will open at 6:30 p.m.; the movie will begin at sundown, approximately 7:45 p.m. There will be separate fees for adults and for children ages 6 to 12. Children age 5 and under will be admitted for free. Front row and second row sponsorships, which include 10 tickets in the front row or second row, respectively, are currently available. To purchase tickets or for more information, readers may visit www.mlar.org/drive-in-movie -night. Because of mass gathering measures mandated by the state, tickets will be limited. For more information about MLAR and to view photos of adoptable dogs and cats, readers may visit www.mlar.org or www.facebook.com/mainline animalrescue.

Fire, rescue, and EMS companies hampered by lack of fundraising opportunities during the COVID-19 pandemic can register now for grants to help cover expenses. The Office of the State Fire Commissioner will offer funding via the COVID-19 Crisis Fire Company and Emergency Medical Services Grant Program. Fire/rescue/EMS companies that received a grant award from the 2019-20 Fire Company and Emergency Medical Services Grant Program (FCEMSGP) and register for the COVID-19 crisis grant program will receive an initial award equal to the amount they received from the 2019-20 FCEMSGP. The surplus funding in the program will be distributed to each eligible company that meets the funding criteria and submits a completed registration, including those that did not receive a 2019-20 FCEMSGP grant award. More information and registration instructions can be found by visiting www.osfc.pa.gov. Registration will be open until Friday, Aug. 7.

so there are expectations for some scenes and singing,” said Weaver, who added that the scale of the show is daunting as well. “(We have) to make it feel massive in the space that we have,” he said. “Trying to make the show feel as big as the movie is one of the challenges.” Auditions for the camp were held in mid-July. Weaver said that a cast of 30 to 40 members is preferable, but a larger cast can be accommodated. Weaver said the show was chosen by Connie Dienner, executive director and founder of Cavod, and Monica DePaul, artistic director of theater. “It became available, and it’s very popular with children,” said Weaver of the selection. Show staff will include Ric Weaver as assistant director,

The junior version includes songs from animated film such as “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” and “Let It Go,” along with five new songs, which were written specifically for the Broadway production. The story of sisterhood follows Elsa and Anna from their girlhood in the palace to an encounter with danger where each discovers her inner potential. Cast members will represent Elsa and Anna at different ages, and other well-known characters from the film will include Hans, Kristoff, Olaf, Sven, King Agnarr, Oaken, and Queen Iduna. Weaver noted that one challenge of staging the show is related to the familiarity of the movie. “It’s a very popular movie,

Funnel Cake Recipe Posted The summer season is a time for ice cream, summer camp and state and county fairs, but this summer will be different with some fairs canceled due to COVID-19. In his cookbook “Fair Foods: The Most Popular and Offbeat Recipes from America’s State and County Fairs” awardwinning chef, author, and renowned educator George Geary celebrates the fun, delicious, strange, and wonderful foods sold at state and county fairs. Since people cannot go to the fair, they may consider trying Geary’s recipe for funnel cake with berry topping.
Special Supplies: Electric Mixer Stockpot Medium saucepan Candy/deep fry thermometer Pastry bag Wire rack Ingredients: 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces 1 cup water, cool 1/2 teaspoon sea salt 1/2 teaspoon granulated sugar 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 3 large eggs 2 large egg whites Canola oil Confectioners’ sugar Directions: 1. Combine butter, water, salt, and sugar in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil over high heat. Remove from heat and quickly stir in the flour. Return the pan to low heat and cook, stirring frequently, for about 3 minutes to cook the flour slightly and rid the mixture of a starchy, floury taste. 2. Remove the pan from the heat and place the dough in the bowl of the mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Mix on medium speed until most of the steam subsides, then add the eggs and egg whites one at a time until each is incorporated, and a batter is formed. 3. Pour 3 inches of oil into a stockpot and heat to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. 4. Meanwhile, place the batter in a pastry bag that is fitted with a round pastry tip no wider than 1/4 inch in diameter. 5. Holding the pastry bag over the hot oil, push the batter out into the hot oil in a zigzag or spiral shape. Fry no more than 1 large or two smaller funnel cakes at a time. 6. Fry the cakes until puffed up and golden (they will triple in size), 3 to 5 minutes, flipping every 30 seconds or so. 7. Drain the cakes on a rack and cool slightly, then sprinkle with confectioners’ sugar and berry topping. Berry Topping (Makes 2 cups) 1 quart fresh berries (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries) 1/2 cup granulated sugar Pinch sea salt Directions: In a bowl, combine berries, sugar, and salt. Let stand for 30 minutes before serving.

This summer, Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley is hosting its first-ever virtual talent show, “Stars at Home. More than 45 former local wish children are participating in the fundraising competition. These wish children recorded videos of their talents at home, and the public can vote to determine a winner. A range of talents will be featured during the virtual event, including singing, dancing, gymnastics, and magic. Community members are encouraged to follow along with Stars At Home on the chapter’s social media sites. Make-A-Wish will share new wish child talent videos on its channels each day through the end of August. Readers can vote for their favorite act by giving a nominal donation. Each donation counts as one vote. The top three finishers will receive prize packages, which will include 25 gallons of ice cream, gift cards to fast food restaurants, or a gift card from a credit card company. All funds raised through Stars at Home will help grant wishes for local children. To learn more, readers may visit https://StarsAtHomePHL.com.

Local artist Anna Carter, owner of Rose River Way Studio, found a new way to share her love of art by offering online classes. “I have always loved teaching ever since I discovered this passion in college tutoring younger classmates, she explained. “I took a full-time job working as a safety engineer in Morgantown and lost touch with that passion. When COVID hit, it suddenly struck me that I really could teach, even remotely. I saw the need for constructive remote activities and decided to try and fill that need with virtual watercolor workshops. Carter’s first class was held to benefit the Village Library of Morgantown, while her second online offering was geared to senior citizens. “This adventure has been an amazing way for me to balance out my analytical engineering day job with a creative and community-building activity, she said. “I’m so excited to continue teaching watercolor in this amazing small town that holds a huge place in my heart.

She added that despite the switch to a virtual tour, the Town Tours and Village Walks program remains popular. “We had 285 registrations (for the tour on July 16),” Marshall noted. “I know some of the many faithful Town Tour attendees were there.” All programs are free to attend; however, sign-up is required at https://chesco planning.org/HisResources/Town Tours.cfm. For more information, readers may contact Marshall at kmarshall@chesco.org. In addition to the Chester County Planning Commission, program sponsors this year include the Chester County Board of Commissioners, the Chester County Historic Preservation Network, the Chester County Historical Society and the Chester County Conference and Visitors Bureau.
