Mission Trip Birdsboro Volunteers Help The Community By Francine Fulton

Although Mission Trip Birdsboro (MTB) had a different look this year because of COVID-19, the volunteer effort continued as more than 100 volunteers performed community

service projects for 23 local homeowners. From July 22 to 26, volunteers performed tasks such as painting, gardening, power washing and building a handicapped-accessible ramp, all while wearing masks and practicing social distancing. “Everything was exterior this year, explained Natalie Aaron, chair of the social media/promotion team. “(Volunteers) did a lot of painting, shrubbery removal, weed pulling and gardening. At one home they filled potholes in the driveway and painted a shed. Now in its seventh year, Mission Trip Birdsboro began in 2014 as an effort by St. Paul’s United Church of Christ (UCC), Birdsboro, as a way to help those unable to care for their homes, See Mission Trip Birdsboro pg 2

Mission Trip Birdsboro volunteers, including Jan Fisher (left photo, left), Paige Bentley (left photo, right) and Mary Selan (right photo) were out in local neighborhoods from July 22 to 26 performing home improvement tasks for people in need and completing projects in the community.

Gardens Grow Food For Pantry Clients By Francine Fulton

Clients of the Honey Brook Food Pantry are now receiving fresh produce along with their nonperishable food items as part of the pantry’s Garden For Life Program. Currently, community gardens dedicated to growing food

for the pantry are located at the Honey Brook Borough Park and at the Honey Brook Township building. The program started out several years ago when families were provided seedlings, seeds, soil and containers in order to grow some of their own produce at home. Children were also given their own gardening supplies. “During distribution days, kids would decorate their containers and fill them with soil and a seedling and take it home to grow a tomato plant or green peppers, explained pantry volunteer Kris Chiappa, garden coordinator. “Last year, we had 50 families involved between the families and the kids’ gardens. This year, because of the social distancing, See Gardens pg 10

Walking Club Forms At Church By Francine Fulton

A group of friends from St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Birdsboro have started a walking club, and members of the community are welcome to participate. The group, known fondly by the name “Onward, Christian Soldiers, walks every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 9:30 a.m. in the parking lot surrounding the church while keeping socially distant. Walks are not held in the event of rain. Margaret Care, a member of the walking club, explained that the group formed in March when the stay-athome order was issued. “When this virus landed in our country and all the restrictions were put into place, as a senior, my life changed and I know some of my friends and members in See Walking Club pg 2

50 Years Of Plenty And Gratitude Shady Maple Celebrates Milestone By Ann Mead Ash

In 1962, Henry and Edna Martin opened a produce stand along Route 23 in East Earl, under the shade of two large maple trees in their front yard. By the late 1960s, the Martins’ daughter, Miriam, had married Lebanon County native Marvin Weaver, and the pair had taken over the stand. According to Ashley Hopkins, marketing manager with Shady Maple Company, Marvin had a saying: “Pile it high, and watch it fly. The saying See Shady Maple pg 7

The Weaver family, including (front, from left) Miriam, Marvin, (back) Phillip, Curt, and Linford, are celebrating 50 years since the opening of the Shady Maple Farm Market as a produce stand owned by Miriam’s parents, Henry and Edna Martin.

including senior citizens and those with disabilities. Through the years, additional churches joined the effort; in 2020, nine churches were represented. Those who did not perform physical labor helped by preparing meals for the worksite volunteers. Breakfast and lunch were prepared at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Birdsboro and at the Birdsboro Masonic Lodge. In addition, prepacked dinners were brought to the lodge by local churches, including St. John-Hill United Church of Christ in Boyertown, St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Douglassville and St. Gabriel’s Episcopal in Douglassville, for volunteers to pick up outdoors at the Masonic Lodge. “It was a grab-and-go style, but we had a big tent. We had (meals) together but apart,” Aaron said. In April and May, organizers had to make the difficult decision of whether or not to continue the

effort this summer because of the coronavirus pandemic. “We were not sure at first if we could do it this year, but the leadership felt that while we couldn’t do MTB as usual, we couldn’t cancel it either,” said Stuart Wells, a member of the kitchen team. “The needs in the community haven’t diminished due to the pandemic. So we carefully monitored the Pennsylvania Health Department guidelines and safe practices to continuously adapt our program.” The theme of year’s effort was “Unbroken.” “Dawn Fear (chair of the participation team) kept going to the theme that we are not broken. We may be different, but not broken,” Aaron said. A highlight of MTB each year is when the homeowners interact with the volunteers. “We have a spiritual development team, which is headed by Pam Read,” Aaron explained. “While our people are there working,

complete their schoolwork. Each group of 12 students will be supervised by a YGBW staff member, and a degreed teacher or educational specialist will be available for every two groups, ensuring a staff-to-student ratio of 1:8. After surveying more than 1,000 parents and guardians in Chester County, YGBW found that respondents want to ensure their children are provided with social opportunities and physical fitness, in addition to academic support. Given YGBW’s mission to support youth development, promote healthy living and encourage social responsibility, these are natural components of all YGBW programs and will be a focus of YGBW’s learning center programs. Registration opened on July 31 for families who have opted for a full virtual option through their school. As school districts make decisions and finalize their plans for the school year, YGBW is prepared to adapt its program to meet additional needs such as supporting those who do a mix of virtual and in-person learning and possibly offering learning centers at local schools. The program will be offered at seven YGBW branches to start: Brandywine YMCA, 295 Hurley Road, Coatesville; Jennersville YMCA, 880 W. Baltimore Pike, West Grove; Kennett Area YMCA, 101 Race St., Kennett Square; Lionville Community YMCA, 100 Devon Drive, Exton; Octorara YMCA Program Center, 104 Highland Road, Atglen; Oscar Lasko YMCA & Childcare Center, 1 E. Chestnut St., West Chester; and Upper Main Line YMCA, 1416 Berwyn-Paoli Road, Berwyn. Capacity is limited. Financial assistance is available. As school districts try to determine how to educate children safely in light of COVID-19, the YMCA of Greater Brandywine (YGBW) has announced that it will open learning centers with small staff-to-student ratios to support families when the school year begins. Known as the largest provider of licensed child care in Pennsylvania, YGBW runs child care, preschool and prekindergarten programs, a state-licensed kindergarten program and several before- and after-school care programs. Since Chester County moved to the yellow phase of the state’s reopening plan in early June, YGBW has safely provided camp and child care to more than 1,000 children weekly using stable groups, as well as implementing health and safety guidelines recommended by the CDC, Department of Human Services, Chester County Health Department, American Academy of Pediatricians and Pennsylvania Board of Health. Just as YGBW has done with its child care and camp programs this summer, stable groups, where children are with the same small cohort of peers and staff daily to limit exposure to and the spread of COVID-19, will be implemented at YGBW learning centers. Each stable group will have a maximum of 12 students. YGBW ’s learning centers, available for students in kindergarten through sixth grade who are doing virtual learning, will provide full-day care from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays, with the option for care afterward until 6 p.m. Students will receive academic support, social enrichment, physical fitness activities and more. Wi-Fi will be provided with students bringing their own device and headphones. Students will have dedicated academic support to help them

NFPA Launches New Podcast The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recently debuted the NFPA Podcast, a new podcast series featuring in-depth interviews on fire, life, and electrical safety. The new podcast follows the same journalistic style that was employed by the former NFPA Journal Podcast but delves further into emerging issues and trending topics by featuring more voices from diverse professionals from around the globe. Points of view from different subject matter experts, including code officials, facility managers, inspectors, builders, electricians, firefighters, public educators, and policymakers, are woven together to demonstrate that safety is a system, as illustrated in the NFPA Fire & Life Safety Ecosystem. The NFPA Podcast looks at persistent challenges, current issues, and potential concerns. It aims to provide listeners with well-rounded information so that those charged with protecting people and property can do their jobs effectively and efficiently. New episodes will air on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month and can be accessed on Spotify, Apple Music, and other podcast platforms. Safety Tips foods, medicine, hand sanitizer, and disinfecting supplies. People should always travel with a mask as many establishments require them. Whether staying in an economy hotel or luxury resort, anyone can be asymptomatic and unknowingly contaminate hightraffic areas. Frequently handled surfaces such as doorknobs, light switches, sinks, faucets, and toilets should be touched as little as possible. These carry a greater risk of contamination. When at a restaurant, hands should be washed before and after eating and sanitized after touching any surface. Also, common areas like pools and gyms should be disinfected whenever possible. As much as people want to hit the road and make up for months of staying at home, it is important to take it slow. Taking on too much can wear bodies down and compromise immune systems. It is important to listen to one’s body and get plenty of rest. Additionally, while having fun, people should not get too comfortable and forget to stay safe. Good hygiene and social distancing should always be practiced. Hands should be washed frequently, masks should be worn when appropriate, and people should try to stay at least six feet apart whenever possible. Above all, people should never travel if they or anyone in their family is sick.

that area increased in sales during the pandemic from up to 80 per day to between 100 and 150. The Weavers’ sons, Curt, along with Phillip and Linford, grew up spending time in the store. Phil, the oldest, officially went to work there in 1983, followed by Curt in 1985 and Lin in 1989. Phil and Lin became co-presidents in 2015. Marvin acknowledges that timing has made a difference in the growth of Shady. After expanding in 1982, the Weavers saved money for the next remodel, but zoning restrictions held them off until 1992. Although that expansion cost more than originally planned, Marvin saw the bright side. “We were in a recession. That’s the time to go for it. You get the best prices. We saved 10% to 20%. As the market has grown, the Weavers have continued to express their gratitude for all they have been given. According to Miriam, God has blessed them tremendously. The market now employs more than 380 people, and the Weavers know that each

referred to offering generous amounts for sale, initially of produce, but later of meats, bakery treats, and other food items, and then watching customers take advantage of the plenty as it flew off the shelves. “Everything is bigger and better at Shady Maple, said Hopkins. Once the Weavers took over the roadside stand, the business began to grow. The Weavers first enclosed the stand with a block building in 1970, expanding to offer groceries that same year. In 1976, the store expanded to 45,000 square feet, and in 1982 it increased to 72,000 square feet. In 2009, it grew to 130,000 square feet - the size it is today. Groceries found in the store now include more than 300 types of tea bags and Shady’s own bulk food items in the freezer department. The dairy department features more than 340 varieties of yogurt, several of which are locally made. The initial stand offered local produce. Today, the produce section features more than 300 items, but fruits and vegetables are still carefully chosen by the owners. For many years, Marvin drove a truck weekly to the Philadelphia produce auction, leaving in the wee hours each Tuesday. Now his son Linford, who oversees the farm market and serves as co-CEO of the company with his brother Phillip, makes the trip. During the summer months, much of the produce sold is grown within 10 miles of the store. In 1974, the in-store bakery was added, creating the flavored breads (a brainchild of Marvin’s on a sleepless night), creative cakes, whoopie pies in several flavors, and doughnuts with which the name Shady Maple has become synonymous. Today, more than 60 employees work in the bakery area, which often sells more than 7,000 doughnuts in a day. In fact, the store sold more than 3 million doughnuts in 2019. In 2013, Shady got its own mascot when Whoop E. Pie was introduced to the delight of many. By 1976, a meat-cutting area had been added to the store. The meat counter offers personal service that hearkens back to the days of the neighborhood butcher and cuts meats for free. During this summer’s ground beef sale, nearly the equivalent of two 18-wheelers of hamburger was sold. In addition, the self-service area features a section of inhouse smoked products; storemade bacon is the best-seller. Visitors to the store will also find a 50-foot deli featuring 10 types of sweet bologna and serving more than 600 customers each Saturday. A separate soup and salad area sells up to 1,500 pounds of macaroni salad each month. Homemade pizzas sold in

one’s attitude contributes to a positive shopping experience for customers. The Weavers are also grateful for the customers who come from near and far to shop at the store. we have eight or nine families that have container gardens at home.” The community garden at the borough was started last summer. “(Honey Brook Borough council member) Jeanne Jenanzo, who is on the board of the food pantry, offered it to us because the people who were working on it were unable to continue,” noted Chiappa. Both the township garden and the one at the borough were planted with the help of the Chester County Food Bank, which provided the plants and seeds. The gardens are maintained by six pantry volunteers. “Someone is there every day at each garden,” Chiappa pointed out. “Everyone is involved in planting, watering, weeding and harvesting. The two gardens are in great places where they get plenty of sun.” She noted that watering recently became easier at the Honey Brook Borough Park community garden, which is located next to the fence separating the

Fifteen pounds of cucumbers, green beans, tomatoes and broccoli picked from the community garden at Honey Brook Borough Park was given out to clients at the Honey Brook Food Pantry on July 22. park from Dave Eames’ yard and The Labs Funeral Home. “We didn’t have a water source and we had to carry up watering cans from the street,” said Chiappa. “Dave Eames saw us doing that and had a spigot installed on his property (for us to use).” Both gardens include sweet peppers and tomatoes, among other crops. “The township garden has zucchini and more cooler-weather vegetables like beets and radishes,” said Chiappa, who became certified as a Master Gardener through the University of Delaware in 2001 and was able to transfer to the Penn State Master Gardener program. During the July 22 distribution day, fresh produce was given out for the first time this summer to pantry clients. The harvest included 15 pounds of cucumbers, green beans, tomatoes and broccoli picked from the Honey Brook Borough Park community garden. “We used to - up until the pandemic - have a produce area outside and people would come through and pick what they wanted,” Chiappa noted. “Now, everything must be boxed and bagged, and it is a drive-by.” Those who stop by either garden are also welcome to help themselves to a fresh tomato or cucumber. “Mainly, we are just trying to increase awareness of the food pantry and (develop) a sense of community and invite people to come and help themselves,” Chiappa said. Chiappa hopes that the gardens will continue to produce vegetables until October. “We will be planting seeds for things like radishes and beets and turnips toward the end of August,” she stated. “We also hope to be able to continue the family gardens and kids’ gardens next year.” The food pantry is located at the Good Food Distribution Center, 5064 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook. Two distributions are held each month - on the second Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on the fourth Wednesday from 4 to 6:30 p.m. For more information about the pantry, readers may visit www.honeybrookfoodpantry.or g or search for “Honey Brook Food Pantry” on Facebook. Those interested in volunteering with the garden program or those who have fresh produce to donate may contact Chiappa at ap506010@gmail.com.

Brandywine Hospital Launches Residency Program

Local Counties Recognized For Generosity

The first year of the Tower Health - Brandywine Hospital General Psychiatry Residency Training Program began on July 1 with eight students in the class.

Financial technology company SmartAsset recently released the results of a study it conducted to identify the Pennsylvania counties where residents are donating the most. To find the most generous places, the study measured how much money people in each county donated as a percentage of their income, as well as the proportion of people in a given county making

Tower Health - Brandywine Hospital recently announced that it has initiated the hospital’s first-ever residency program. The first-year class of the Tower Health - Brandywine Hospital General Psychiatry Residency Training Program began on July 1. There are eight students in the first class. The four-year accredited general psychiatry residency program, a collaboration between the psychiatry training program at Drexel University and Brandywine Hospital, has 32 positions with approximately eight residents per training year. The program offers experiences in inpatient, outpatient, consultation-liaison, geriatric, community, substance abuse and child and adolescent psychiatry in a range of clinical settings throughout the Philadelphia area. The four-year accredited general psychiatry residency program includes both didactic and clinical curricula. The didactic curriculum and supervisory experiences emphasize a well-rounded approach

to psychiatry with a focus on psychotherapy as a critical part of the skillset of every psychiatrist. The clinical curriculum includes a mixture of training in different areas of expertise over the four years, including internal medicine, adult neurology, emergency services and behavioral health. During the first and second years, residents rotate through a variety of inpatient settings, including time spent at Brandywine Behavioral Health, with one-month rotations on each of the four units - general adult, mood disorders, geriatric and eating disorders. The program also includes rotations at other training sites involved with this residency program. The third year is spent entirely in the outpatient setting. The fourth year includes a mixture of time spent on clinical activities for ongoing care of their outpatients, inpatient “chiefships” and electives. To learn more information about the program, readers may visit www.brandywine.tower health.org/academics.

The Junkluggers Opens For Business

The Heritage of Green Hills resident Tanya Russ (right) received a $1,000 check from executive director Doug Walther as a reward for winning the community’s writing contest.

Generosity from pg 11 percentage of their income, SmartAsset first calculated the total net income of all people in each county. To do this, the company used tax return data and accounted for federal, state, and local taxes paid. Researchers also accounted for deductible entries, including mortgage interest, mortgage points, and mortgage insurance payments. They then divided each county’s total charitable donations by its total net income to see how much county residents are donating relative to their income.

Next, SmartAsset divided the total number of tax returns with charitable contributions by the number of total tax returns for each county. This step gave researchers the proportion of people in each county who make charitable donations. The two factors were then indexed and equally weighted to yield the most charitable places index. For more information on the study and methodology, readers may visit https://smartadvisor match.com/data/most-generous -counties-2019/pennsylvania.

The Junkluggers of Berks, Chester and Lancaster is now available to serve residential customers and businesses in Berks, Chester and Lancaster counties. Services include junk removal, appliance removal and furniture removal, as well as attic, basement and garage cleanouts. Franchise owner Jakub Mochon has always been concerned about the environment and the community in this area of Pennsylvania, which he calls home. Mochon left his career of 20 years in the medical device industry and launched the Junkluggers of Berks, Chester and Lancaster. The eco-friendly junk removal company is on a mission to make Pennsylvania a little greener and eliminate 100% of reusable waste from landfills by the year 2025. The Junkluggers of Berks, Chester and Lancaster is the second franchise located in Pennsylvania. Mochon decided to bring the business to his local area, as he has been a resident of Chester and Berks counties for the past 18 years. He said he believes the

Junkluggers will bring a positive impact to the area as he develops relationships with local non-forprofit organizations that can benefit from gently used items that need a second home. The Junkluggers offers donation receipts and launched the Remix Market, a sister company to some of the Junkluggers franchishes, as a way to keep items out of landfills. The Junkluggers focuses on green, communityoriented practices and striving to enhance lives, the community and the environment by donating, recycling, upcycling and supporting local charities. With the addition of Berks, Chester and Lancaster, the Junkluggers, founded in 2004, now has 30 locations open and operates across a total of 14 states, which are California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia. PA law requires Home Improvement contractors with annual billing of over $5,000 to be registered with the Attorney General’s office. This registration enables consumers to trace contractors should issues arise between you and a contractor. We encourage readers to acquire references for any contractor you consider hiring.

We are seeking someone with a valid, clean PA driver’s license to pick up 6 teachers and bring them to Honey Brook on weekdays starting August 24th. You will use your own vehicle.
