Meetings of Kacie’s Cause, which is a support group for family and friends of those battling addiction, are being offered on Wednesdays from 7 to 8 p.m. at the outdoor gazebo at the Schneider Parish Center, 2995 Cemetery Road, Parkesburg. The meetings were formerly held in the chapel at The Parkesburg POINT, but those meetings were suspended on March 14 due to the coronavirus pandemic. “All group meetings were suspended; however, (Kacie’s Cause) founder Andy Rumford offered to arrange Zoom meetings for those in need of support or in-person meetings for the distribution of Narcan as needed,” noted Kellie Seltzer, team member, Kacie’s Cause, Parkesburg Chapter. For the meetings in Parkesburg, there is an indoor plan in case of

inclement weather. Those who attend the meetings wear masks and practice social distancing. The Parkesburg meetings are designed and led by a group of moderators. “The group is open to friends and family members, so it is not just for parents,” Seltzer noted. For more information about the meetings and the Parkesburg chapter, readers may visit www.facebook.com/ KaciesCauseParkesburg. Kacie’s Cause is named for Kacie Rumford, the daughter of Andy and Donna Rumford of Kennett Square, who passed away from a fatal overdose in 2013 at the age of 23. The Parkesburg Chapter was formed in August of 2013 by Betsy and Socker Gillen in honor of their son, John, who died in 2011. More information about John and his parents’ efforts can be found at www.kaciescause.org /featured-memorial-john-gillen. See Kacie’s Cause pg 3

A Way To Honor Your Grandparents

Connie Johnson, who is known as “The Card Lady,” recently donated a set of hand-stamped greetings cards to the Honey Brook Food Pantry (HBFP). The cards, featuring cartoon characters and inspirational messages, will be placed in brown bag lunches that will be distributed to youngsters served by the pantry. Prior to the most recent donation, Johnson also made Easter cards for students served by the pantry’s backpack program. “I learned about the Honey Brook Food Pantry from a Facebook post by The Lord’s Pantry, where they tagged Ken Ross, (HBFP board president),” explained Johnson. “I reached out to Ken Ross, and he said he would be happy to have the cards.” Johnson said that she planned to make cards for the backpack program held during the upcoming school year, but because of COVID-19 that program will

likely change to a lunch bag distribution. “The cards are all little kid oriented,” she noted. “There is a female pig called Petunia and a male called Leonard. (One card) has Leonard blowing bubbles and Petunia is doing a hula dance with a hula skirt on.” The card features the message “May the sun shine bright on you today.” Another card for the lunch bags features a smiling marshmallow that reads, “Every summer has a story. I melt for you.” “The cards are my way of creating smiles - one card at a time,” Johnson said. Johnson began making cards after she took a stamping class. “I had taken a stamping class for a few years, and when I started the class, I wanted to be able to use the techniques (to create) scrapbooks,” she stated. “The threedimensional stickers that are used to personalize your scrapbook are so expensive, so I wanted to figure out

Johnson only uses card-making materials made in the United States. “ With making the cards for the veterans, I started looking at where the paper, stamps and ink were from. If I am making cards for veterans, I need to find stuff made in the USA, she stated. There are three layers to each card - a colored background, a layer that frames the card and the white face of the card itself where the stamps are featured. “I divide them among the food pantries so each gets various designs, Johnson noted. “The cards I donated to Honey Brook had 27 different card designs. She said the community can get involved in the program by donating cards, ink and paper stock. She would also like to host an instructional class so that others may learn the card stamping techniques as well. For more information, readers may search for “The Card Lady - Cards for a Cause on Facebook. Those who would like to donate materials may contact Johnson for specific information via Facebook.

Johnson, who was born in the Poconos, donated her first set of hand-stamped cards to the Valor Clinic Foundation, a veterans’ organization in the Poconos. Later, she expanded her effort by donating cards to local food banks, including the HBFP, The Lord’s Pantry in Downingtown and two organizations in the Poconos - the West End Food Pantry in Kunkletown and PVEN Food Pantry in Sciota. “I have been making cards at Christmas for CHOP (Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia), she reported. “With the COVID-19 shutdown of visitors to nursing homes, I also donated spring, summer and patriotic cards to six area nursing homes for their patients. Each nursing home received 120 to 150 cards. Johnson works on the cards in the morning at her office before the workday begins and again after work. “I do a little (work on them) at lunchtime and stay at the office and work at them for another hour or an hour and a half after work, she noted.

Giant Introduces Reusable Bag Program

The Giant Company introduced a new reusable bag program on July 16. The program is designed to provide additional support to community partners focused on eliminating hunger, changing children’s lives and healing the planet. The bags will rotate seasonally, with a portion of the proceeds going to the corresponding nonprofit partner. The first bag, in stores now, benefits eight local Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals in the communities where the company has a presence: The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia; Penn State Children’s Hospital in Hershey; Geisinger Janet Weis Children’s Hospital in Danville; Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.; University of Virginia Children’s Hospital in Charlottesville, Va.; WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va.; Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore, Md.; and Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital. In September through early next year, the reusable bag will have a hunger relief focus in support of regional food banks. In spring 2021, customers can support Planet Bee Foundation, a nonprofit organization focused on driving awareness for pollinators in local communities. The Giant Company announced on July 31 that more than $1 million was raised as part of its summer campaign in support of local Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals. The campaign, which kicked off June 1, marks the highest fundraising effort for the organization in the history of the company. A partner of the nonprofit organization for almost 25 years, Giant has recently introduced several new ways for customers to support their local CMN Hospital beyond making a donation during checkout. Customers can now make donations by rounding up their purchase at self-checkout, donating CHOICE Rewards points and purchasing special reusable bags with a portion of each sale going to the charity. The company will continue raising funds for CMN Hospitals through the end of August. In March, to help provide assistance for the youngest members of the community during the coronavirus pandemic, Giant donated $250,000 to support COVID-19 mitigation efforts. Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), Children’s National Hospital, Geisinger Janet Weis Children’s Hospital, Johns Hopkins Children’s Center and Penn State Children’s Hospital each received $50,000. The Giant Company is known as one of the top 15 fundraisers in the country for CMN Hospitals. Customers, team members and vendor partners have donated more than $48 million over the past 23 years in support of children’s health at local CMN Hospitals, including CHOP; Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.; Geisinger Janet Weis Children’s Hospital in Danville; Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore; Penn State Children’s Hospital in Hershey; Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital; University of Virginia Children’s Hospital in Charlottesville, Va.; and WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital in Morgantown, W. PennDOT Offers AAH Guidance The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) recently announced guidance for groups looking to beautify their communities as its Adopt-AHighway (AAH) activities resume across the state. These activities were suspended as part of Pennsylvania’s efforts to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19. PennDOT’s AAH volunteer coordinators received guidance to help ensure continued virus mitigation as the groups’ volunteer cleanup activities continue. In continued preventive measures against the spread of COVID-19, volunteers must adhere to all Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Pennsylvania Department of Health guidelines while carrying out AAH activities. These preventative measures include social distancing, wearing of masks by individuals, washing hands frequently, and using hand sanitizer whenever appropriate. As always, PennDOT will provide volunteer groups with safety vests, trash bags, work gloves, and other equipment as requested by their PennDOT AAH coordinator. For safety, the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) will be notified of all scheduled events, and PennDOT will pick up bagged litter from the roadside. While AAH cleanups will commence on state-maintained highways, areas that are non-state maintained can be cleaned and adopted through Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful. More information is available at www.keep pabeautiful.org/keep-it/ adoption-program/. To join an existing AAH team or start a new one, readers may visit www.penndot.gov, scroll down and click on Roadside Beautification.

The Chester County Justice Center prepared for the return of jury trials recently with a full scale exercise that tested plans to keep jurors safe while preserving the fairness of court proceedings. About 40 volunteers from various county departments gathered outside the Chester County Justice Center on July 23 just as jurors would do if they were called to jury duty for a criminal or civil trial. It was the beginning of a four-part exercise based on planning by the courts, the Department of Emergency Services and the Chester County Health Department.

Bortner, the administrative judge for the criminal division. Physical seating and social distancing were tested for jurors as well as courtroom participants, including the presiding judge, prosecutor, defense attorney, witnesses, security personnel and court reporter. Line of sight was tested for jurors and participants as they viewed courtroom evidence. The exercise also tested whether a court reporter would be able to hear witness testimony from behind protective plexiglass installed around the witness box. Jury trials were slated to resume See Trials pg 9

Trials from pg 8 on Aug. 3 in Chester County. The prohibition on indoor events and gatherings of more than 25 persons contained in the governor’s July 15 executive order does not apply to the judiciary or court functions. Once jury trials begin, those selected for jury trial will be provided with kits that include a face shield, a mask, hand sanitizer and wipes. Courts, under the direction of President Judge Hall, have worked collaboratively with multiple departments to develop a comprehensive reopening plan, according to Mike Murphy, emergency services director.

NEW for ! 2020

“The exercise validated our plan to accommodate the number of people required for a jury trial while ensuring the health and safety of the jurors, visitors, and staff of the Justice Center,” he stated.

To prepare for jury trials, the Chester County Justice Center held an exercise that tested safety procedures, including those for prospective jurors.
