MCC to present carnival, car show Hay Creek Festival: A living history event

MovingCommunities to Christ (MCC) Church will hold its fifth annual RISE Carnival and Car Show from Wednesday, Sept. 6, through Saturday, Sept. 9, from 5 to 10 p.m. at MCC’s main campus in Elverson. The family-friendly event will feature carnival rides, games and food. Admission and parking are free. Fireworks will be held at the carnival at dusk on Sept. 9.

The festival’s car show will take place on Sept. 9 from 4 to 7 p.m., and it will feature live music along with a display of classic, modern and antique cars. Trophy categories for the car show will include Best Classic, Best Modern, Best Antique, Best In Show and People’s Choice. Registration for the car show is free, but donations will be accepted. Preregistration is not required.

“Last year, we had about 40 cars,” said Jenn Pallante, a member of the MCC Church events team. “We have volunteers from our church that judge. We also give out tickets, and for a donation, people can vote for the People’s Choice trophy.”

The amusement rides, including a Ferris wheel and merry-go-round, will be set up on the church grounds. The amusement company will begin setup on Tuesday, Sept. 5. “You can (purchase) a wristband, which covers all the rides, or buy (individual) tickets,” said Pallante, adding that tickets will be discounted on Sept. 6. Food will be available for purchase throughout the event. “We do the burgers and hot dogs and grilled

cheese,” said Pallante, noting that the carnival company will sell other foods such as cotton candy, candy apples, funnel cake and corn dogs.

There will also be an opportunity to win gift baskets. The winners will be announced on Sept. 9; they need

not be present to win.

A children’s scavenger hunt will be held inside the building, and the church will provide information about its services and other activities that it offers.,

“The carnival is not a fundraiser for the church. It’s more of an outreach

The Hay Creek Valley Historical Association (HCVHA) will present the 47th annual Hay Creek Festival on Friday through Sunday, Sept. 8 through 10, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at historic Joanna Furnace. The event will feature demonstrations of traditional crafts, children’s activities, festival foods, a display of antique vehicles and more.

The festival timeline will highlight the 18th- and 19th-century iron-making community from the beginning of the furnace’s operation in 1791 up to the 1950s. “The Hay Creek Festival is truly a one-of-a-kind living history adventure,” said Mark Zerr, HCVHA executive director.

SALT to host Princess Party

SALT Performing Arts will bring back its popular Princess Party on Saturday, Sept. 2, at the Ludwig’s Corner Horse Show grounds. There will be seatings at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and the party will last approximately 90 minutes.

During the event, children of all ages will be able to meet princesses, princes, fairies and other fairytale characters. Attendees are encouraged to dress up as princesses and princes for the event. “(The party) is definitely not for girls only. We’d love to have all kids that would enjoy this event,” said Judy Elliott, SALT

marketing director. “We will have a few princes, too.”

This is the fifth year that SALT has hosted a Princess Party. The first two events took place at the SALT theater in the West Pikeland Township Building. This is the third time it is being hosted at the showgrounds, where the annual Ludwig’s Corner Horse Show and Country Fair will take place on Labor Day weekend from Friday, Sept. 1, through Monday, Sept. 4.

“The Princess Party will be held inside a large tent, rain or shine. Tickets to the Princess Party also gets you admission to the horse show and fair,” Elliott said, noting See Princess Party pg 2

for the community,” Pallante noted. “If there is a profit, it goes to next year’s carnival. I love that we do it; it’s great and it’s fun for the church to get involved in the community.”

Event organizers said that the name of the event is part of the church’s mission to have Christians “rise up” to serve people in the tricounty area who may be looking for a church to attend. Events team member Lynnette Hess noted that the event provides an opportunity for people who do not attend church to get to know the congregants.

“We come to church in jeans and do fun things,” said Hess. “One of our core values is ‘God’s not boring and neither are we.’ But we also understand that MCC is not the right fit for everyone, and we’re ready to get people connected to a church that is right for them.”

MCC is located at 4221 Main St. (Route 23), Elverson. For more information about the carnival, visit www.movingcommunitiesto christ.org and choose “2023 RISE Carnival & Car Show” on the home page.

that performances will take place near the main entrance of the venue. “A few of the princesses will lead the pet parade in between shows, too.”

The ticket price includes a meet-and-greet with all the characters, musical performances and dancing, as well as photo and autograph opportunities. Children will also receive a party favor.

Several of the costumed characters have appeared as leads in SALT shows in past

seasons. “Almost all of the royals and royal subjects are from SALT shows,” Elliott said, adding that the event is ideal for hosting a birthday party or for parents and grandparents to enjoy spending time with their children and grandchildren.

Tickets are available at www.saltpa.com/princess party. All proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit SALT Performing Arts, a nonprofit organization that provides

live community theater productions, summer and yearlong theater camps for children and more.

The Ludwig’s Corner Horse Show grounds is located at 1325 Pottstown Pike, Glenmoore, near the intersection of Routes 100 and 401. Parking will be free.

Highlights of the festival will include open fire cooking and bake oven demonstrations, a contemporary craft market, living history presentations, a display of vintage Industrial Revolution-era working equipment, threshing demonstrations, a working sawmill, a display of steam engines and tractors, folk music presentations and Civil War and World War II encampments.

Visitors will also be able to tour the Joanna Furnace buildings. A 22-minute introductory video on the history of Joanna Furnace will take place each hour in the blowing engine house.

The Tri-County Heritage Library, which the HCVHA acquired in 2021, will have a special exhibit at the festival. “Each year, our library does a different exhibition at the mule stable,” said Zerr, noting that last year’s exhibit featured quilts. “This year, we will focus on the collection we received from the Florence (Flo) Williams estate, including one or two spinning wheels.”

According to Zerr, Williams was an educator and Civil War re-enactor. She also accumulated more than 40 spinning wheels of various types during her life and demonstrated the early American craft of spinning and dyeing wool. Her demonstrations included donning period dress and teaching others about spinning and its role in Colonial America. Festival visitors will see her “walking wheel” on display, as well as period re-enacting garb and her personal artifacts.

Children’s activities will include candle and papermaking, early American games and Civil War marching and drilling. Children should pick up their “chores list” at the festival gate, which will feature all the hands-on activities at the event. Upon completion of a variety of tasks, children will be rewarded with a free wagon ride.

Festival food available throughout the weekend will include chicken potpie, hamburgers, hot dogs, turkey and roast beef sandwiches, sausage sandwiches, Mabel’s open-fire cooked soups, breads, hand-dipped

ice cream, funnel cakes, french fries and baked goods. Freshly pressed apple cider will be made daily in the Joanna Furnace cider mill.

Joanna Furnace is located at 1250 Furnace Road, Geigertown. Parking on Sept. 8 will be on the festival grounds. Free continuously running shuttle buses will be available on Saturday, Sept. 9, and Sept. 10 only at Weaver’s Orchard, 40 Fruit Lane, Morgantown.

An admission fee will be charged. There will be separate prices for adults and children ages 6 to 12. Children age 5 and younger will be admitted for free. For more information, visit www.haycreek.org.

Birdsboro Woman’s Club installs officers, new members

Shoes

The Woman’s Club of Birdsboro, a community service organization open to women of all ages, recently installed officers and new members.

During a candle-lighting ceremony held at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ (UCC), the following new officers were installed for 2023-24: president Suzanne Lander, vice president Phyllis Hoffman, corecording secretary Kim Zeiber, corresponding secretary Joyce Zeiber and treasurer Jodie Zuber.

“Last year, we celebrated our 85th anniversary,” said Lander. “The candle-lighting ceremony dates back to when the club started, and we like to keep the tradition.”

Color 5K

New members were also inducted at the event: Mary Beth Cinsici, Abigail Jones, Martha Millard, Anna Palmer and Kim Zeiber.

Lander pointed out that the officers and members were asked to recite the club oath. “You (promise) to serve the club to the best of your ability and share your talents so we can improve our community,” she said.

The Woman’s Club of Birdsboro, established in 1937, holds several events throughout the year, but its two major fundraisers are a car show in October and bingo in March. This year’s car show will take place on Sunday, Oct. 1, at Daniel Boone High School, and the next bingo will be on Sunday, March 3, 2024.

to treatment through the help of a certified recovery specialist. The specialist arrives within one hour of an overdose survivor’s arrival in

the emergency room and provides the survivor with personal support and a connection to treatment. The specialist is also available to

benefit local organizations, as well as fund scholarships to graduating seniors at Daniel Boone High School. Beneficiaries of the fundraisers include the Boone Area Library, Birdsboro-Union Fire Department, Birdsboro Police Department, Mission Trip Birdsboro and Beyond, the Birdsboro Community Memorial Center and area food banks, including Hopewell Love.

The club meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month from September through May at 7 p.m. at the St. Paul’s UCC Sunday school building, First and Washington streets, Birdsboro, located behind the Masonic Lodge. Meetings often feature guest speakers or the planning of fundraising events.

Refreshments are provided.

New members are always welcome, and membership is not limited to residents of Birdsboro.

“(Women can) come to a meeting and see if it is something they like,” Lander said, noting that members pay nominal annual dues. “The only requirement for membership is that you help out at our big events.”

She said in addition to meetings, the club has a social aspect. Club members enjoy a Christmas dinner together as well as a spring dinner. “I met a lot of friends through the club. (They are) people I would not have met otherwise,” Lander shared. For more information about the club, search for “Woman’s Club of Birdsboro” on Facebook.

At every Chester County Color 5K, family members and friends write personal messages to those they have lost to addiction or who are still battling it.

speak with the survivor’s loved ones.

Commissioner Michelle Kichline led the effort to establish the Chester County Color 5K in 2016 as part of her commitment to addressing the opioid and heroin crisis affecting many people in Chester County. Since then, she has seen the event grow into a fundraising effort that aims to help destigmatize substance use disorder and lead individuals to treatment and a path to recovery.

Registration for the Chester County Color 5K is open to teams and individuals at www.chesco .org/color5k. Preregistration is encouraged.
