Packing Christmas Joy In A Shoebox BY FRANCINE FULTON
illions of children throughout the world will receive a shoebox full of Christmas gifts through Operation Christmas Child (OCC), a program of Samaritan’s Purse, a Christian relief organization. Some of those boxes were filled right in Chester County. Will and Amy Shaw, regional area coordinators for the Mid-Atlantic North Region of OCC, held an outdoor shoebox packing party in the driveway and garage of their Chester County home on Aug. 23. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., participants filled shoeboxes in assembly-line fashion with items such as hair accessories, school supplies and stuffed animals. Volunteers came to help from throughout the area, and some are members of Calvary Chapel, Chester Springs, where Amy and Will attend. More than 1,200 boxes were packed during the day. Among the participants were members of the DiAddezio family of Morgantown, which includes Nelah and Mark DiAddezio, and their children, including Joseph, a student at Achievement House Charter School; Nina, who attends Conestoga Christian School in Morgantown; and Sophia. The children’s grandmother Toni DiAddezio was also present.
“ . . .W e h a v e t r i e d t o teach our kids the importance of giving. They have fun picking out gifts and filling boxes.” Will and Amy have been involved with OCC for a number of years and have personally taken part in shoebox distributions in several countries, including Paraguay. The couple shops year-round for OCC, buys in bulk and gathers donations. “They were getting rid of a bunch of Kohl’s Cares stuffed animals for 75 cents (each), so we bought 700 of
them,” said Amy, noting that one day prior to the packing party, 60 Kohl’s boxes filled with stuffed animals were delivered to their home. This year, National Collection Week for OCC will take place from Monday, Nov. 15, through Monday, Nov. 22. Local donation sites include Gateway Church in Parkesburg, Calvary Chapel of Chester Springs and East Nantmeal Christian Fellowship in Elverson. Specific times and additional locations can be found beginning on Wednesday, Sept. 15, at www.samaritanspurse .org/what-we-do/operation -christmas-child. Suggested shoebox gifts include toys, such as dolls, finger puppets and foam balls; personal care items, such as washcloths, hairbrushes and combs; and craft items, including coloring books, pens and pencils and stickers. Senders may also include a personal note to the recipient. Amy said that each box should contain a “wow” item. One of the “wow” items that the Shaws packed this year is a soccer ball with a manual air pump. For more information, email occphilly@aol.com or search for “OCC Regional Area Coordinators in PA (Mid-Atlantic North OCC)” on Facebook.

“We spent three hours putting together boxes and packing the boxes,” said Nelah. “This is our first year at a packing event, but we’ve been packing individual boxes in our home for OCC for many years. We have tried to teach our kids the importance of giving. They have fun picking out gifts and filling boxes.” Will and Amy held a similar packing party at their home in 2020, but they had to limit attendance because of the pandemic. “(OCC) delivered 9 million shoeboxes in 2020; a typical year is 11 (million) or 12 million,” said Amy. “Canceling it was never an option.”

“ When they announced my name, it was the most rewarding thing ever,” said Maille McNicholas of Morgantown, who was recently crowned Miss Jr. High United States 2021. “I have been doing pageants since I was 8, and I always wanted to have that moment.” Maille, who is a ninth-grader at Twin Valley High School, won the title during the National United States Scholarship Pageant, held July 19 to 23 in Hershey. The pageant, which has the motto “Crowns Making an Impact,” is a scholarship, community service and platform-based pageant that is designed to showcase the achievements of the contestants, with an emphasis on developing communication skills, self-confidence, leadership skills and community involvement and making a difference. Contestants in various age groups competed in three areas of competition: interview, fashion and evening gown. “The first phase of the competition was the interview with a panel of four judges,” Maille explained.
“The next day we had preliminaries; that’s when we did fashion and formal wear.” The top five contestants were chosen from the preliminaries to compete in the pageant the next day. “You re-competed if you made it through, but everyone got (to be in) the opening number,” Maille noted.

The silent auction will also be open, offering items such as nature-related artwork, fishing and hunting trips and coolers. “We will have hunting and fishing equipment, (including) handmade fishing rods,” said Art Lyle, one of the event organizers. There will be a table of prizes geared toward women that will offer crafts and jewelry, and prizes for children will also be available. “All the youths come up front and we have drawings for them,” Lyle said. “No extra tickets are needed.” Because the event falls on 9/11, it has been named the Freedom Dinner and there will prizes for veterans in attendance. “Veterans will stand up and we (will) recognize them and thank them for their service,” Lyle said. A catered buffet dinner will start at 6 p.m. Winners of the silent auction items will be announced after dinner. A live auction will conclude the event. Live auction items will include artwork, home décor and collectibles. In addition, Backyard Bucks will give out a hunting trip to

Musicians will gather to perform at the Labor Day Fiddler’s Picnic in New Holland. BY ANN MEAD ASH
Ron McVey, one of the main organizers of the annual Fiddler’s Picnic, and Sue Noll, secretary/treasurer of the New Holland Summer Arts Program (NHSAP), are happy to be planning the end-of-summer event once again. “It’s nice to be able to hold it this year,” said McVey. “A lot of people are excited about it,” said Noll, who has been fielding calls from area
residents who want to make sure it will be held. NHSAP did not hold any events in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions. This year’s picnic will be held on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 6, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, which is located in the 400 block of Jackson Street, New Holland. Live music will begin at 10 a.m. when the Summit Hill Bluegrass band will take the stage. Musicians are encouraged to arrive early to reserve a slot on the park stage. Square dancing, under the direction of Glenn - The One-Man Band will be held in the Kiwanis Pavilion from 1 to 3 p.m. The performance schedule allows a group to sign up for a 30-minute spot and a single or duo to register for 15 minutes. Usually 15 or more acts perform, and the picnic is often a place for musicians to join up to make music together. Individuals who play accordion, banjo, ukulele,
bass, guitar, as well as those who sing, often take part. “I have seen flutes as well,” recalled Noll, who noted that musicians often team up to play together. “Whether they are strangers or have known each other all their lives, (they form groups),” she noted. Wellknown favorites that are often heard in the park include “Turkey in the Straw,” “Dueling Banjos,” “Shenandoah Breakdown,” and “Ragtime Annie.” The picnic portion of the event is supplied by the New Holland Lions Club, which brings its food trailer and offers items for purchase. According to Lions Club representative James Bronson, club members will serve the organization’s signature hot ham sandwiches, barbecue chicken halves, chicken corn soup, hot dogs, and beverages. Members of the Garden Spot High School (GSHS) marching band will help the Lions in the trailer. In return, the Lions will make a donation to the
GSHS Marching Band Booster Club. Charles Ludwig Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 7632 will sell water at the event. A queen-size quilt made and donated by the Garden Spot Village Quilters will be given away at the picnic. The quilt features 20 handappliqued tulip blocks set on point against a background of white and hunter green. NHSAP is an all-volunteer organization that has existed in New Holland for more than four decades. Noll said that new volunteers are always welcome. No admission is charged for NHSAP events, but freewill offerings are received. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. To learn more about NHSAP, visit www.new hollandsummerarts.com or search for “New Holland Summer Arts Association” on Facebook. Those interested in volunteering may email through a link on the aforementioned website, send a Facebook message, or call 717-355-9795.

A variety of activities will be held at the 32nd Fairmount benefit auction and barbecue.
During 2020, Fairmount streamlined its annual Sharing Fund benefit by holding chicken barbecue sales off site and moving the annual auction online. For 2021, many of the activities associated with the event will return, but the fundraiser will not be held at Fairmount. Instead, New Covenant Mennonite Church, 529 E. Farmersville Road, New Holland, will host the 32nd annual benefit auction and barbecue on Saturday, Sept. 11. The fun will kick off at 6:30 a.m. with a country breakfast and flea market. Registration for the auction, which will be held live and webcast so that bids may be made in real time, will begin at 8 a.m. Chicken barbecue meals will go on sale at 10 a.m. “We will have all the
food and children’s activities,” said Peter Passage, stewardship director with Fairmount. A helicopter candy drop is planned for 10 a.m. if weather permits. Carol Swailes, Fairmount public relations coordinator, noted that bidding will start on Saturday, Sept. 4, through a link at www.FairmountHomes.org, where auction items may be viewed. This year’s live auction will begin at 9 a.m., with a variety of items, including theme baskets, indoor and outdoor furniture, and plants. Two items of special interest are a Ford 4000 tractor and a miniature patchwork sampler, comprised of 337 pieces, made by Rebecca Gregory-Smith, granddaughter of Fairmount resident Laura Zimmerman. The tiny hand-stitched quilt is the most recent in a line of donations
from Gregory-Smith dating back more than 15 years. A Burkholder trailer and four 10-minute helicopter rides will also go up for bids. A silent auction, which will open at 9 a.m., will feature gift cards and Dining for Dollars meals provided by Fairmount staff members and other donors. Attendees can also help the Sharing Fund with Make a Difference bids of $75 or $150, which will cover a half day or full day of patient care, respectively. Auction organizer Dorothy Witmer noted that Make a Difference bids allow attendees who are outbid or not in need of any auction items to take part. The Sharing Fund covers about $2.5 million yearly in uncompensated care. The 2020 auction and barbecue raised $85,000, but this year Passage hopes the expanded format will bring in $125,000 for the cause.

In November of 2019, Dave Kling, pastor of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 105 W. Main St., Terre Hill, and Churchtown United Methodist Church, located along Route 23 in Churchtown, scheduled a GriefShare program called Surviving the Holidays to be held at St. Paul’s that December. The response to that event resulted in a GriefShare group of up to seven participants meeting at St. Paul’s on Thursdays at 7 p.m. The next installment of the program will run Sept. 16 through Dec. 16. Kling first became acquainted with GriefShare after losing his wife in 2012. “I needed (GriefShare),” recalled Kling, who first attended a Surviving the Holidays event at a church in New Holland before signing up for a GriefShare program at a church on Columbia Avenue in Lancaster. Through that program, he met

Judy Blore, who had been instrumental in the creation of the biblically based GriefShare curriculum. After completing the course, he worked with her as a facilitator and then took over, leading several sessions at Lancaster churches. Now, Kling is putting his experience to work in Terre Hill, leading the group through the workbook, with each session covering a section of the book. “There are various topics all dealing with some aspect of grief,” said Kling, recalling a recent session dealing

with anger and guilt and another simply titled “Why?” He pointed out that the book is set up with spaces for participants to take notes. There are also brief daily assignments that involve Scripture and a specific question. According to Kling, meetings begin with an update from each participant. “We talk about what was good … what was bad, ‘What did you feel? and ‘How are you coming along?’” said Kling, who added that the opening is followed by Scripture and a video on the topic of the week. “We follow that up with a general discussion of the video,” he noted. Those who are grieving are not encouraged to begin a GriefShare program during the first three months after a loss. Kling said he began the program about five months after losing his wife. “You hear something different (from the video) depending on where you are in the grief process,” he explained, noting that the type of relationship the participant had with the deceased affects the process as well. “Everyone grieves differently,” Kling said. Kling added that some people tend to lock up their grief, which can lead to issues. He noted that the first few months after a loss can be dangerous for a grieving person. “You’re in a position where you can make all kinds of mistakes,” he said, noting that substance abuse can become a problem and that those who are grieving are more likely to be involved in auto accidents because of difficulty concentrating. He added that some who are grieving the loss of a spouse may rush into a new marriage. However, GriefShare aims to help participants work through their emotions in a healthy and effective way. Readers who are interested in more information may visit www.griefshare.org. Individuals with specific questions may call the church at call 717-445-5512.
Elverson areas prior to the pageant, collecting nearly 110,000 pop tabs. Maille was born with a rare condition called Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome. The condition affects her right leg and causes her to have a large birthmark along with other physical afflictions. Maille has chosen to highlight her condition as her pageant platform, dubbed Maille’s Mission. Through Maille’s Mission, she spreads awareness about vascular birthmarks, as well as promotes antibullying efforts for individuals with these associated conditions and other physical differences. Maille is the Global Ambassador for the Vascular Birthmarks Foundation
and hosts an interview series published on YouTube called “More Than a Birthmark.” Mallie, who received several cash scholarships and a prize package, said she is looking forward to the upcoming year. “I have a year where I basically do a ton of community service and a lot of appearances and then we do some fun stuff like a trip to Myrtle Beach,” she said. “After the year is over, I have to crown the new winner.” For more information about the National United States Scholarship Pageant, visit www.NationalUnited StatesPageant.com.
