Twin Valley Parents “Chalk The Walk” BY FRANCINE FULTON

“Have a Great Year,” “You Got This,” “Be Safe,” “Enjoy Learning,” “Teachers Rock” and “Adventure Awaits” were just some of the welcome back messages that greeted students and teachers on Aug. 27, the first day of school in the Twin Valley School District (TVSD). As part of the “Chalk the Walk” event, parents of students in the school district were invited to decorate the sidewalks leading to the entrances of all of the district buildings on Aug. 26, the day before school opened. Students were not allowed to participate so that they could be surprised when attending school the next morning. Chalk messages, many of which were accompanied by images of rainbows, smiley faces and hearts, were drawn at Twin Valley High School (TVHS), Twin Valley Middle School (TVMS), the Robeson Elementary Center (REC), the Twin Valley Elementary Center and the Honey Brook Elementary Center (HBEC). A video of all the messages can be found on an Aug. 27 post at www.face book.com/twinvalleyschooldistrict. Megan Roswick, who has children attending TVMS and REC, organized the event by inviting parents to partici-

pate via social media. “We made an event page on Facebook and shared it on the Twin Valley pages. It started with my own friends and expanded from there,” she said. “We just said to write encouraging things and (express) appreciation for the teachers.” Roswick explained that a group of TVSD parents has agreed to continue to offer special events for students and teachers throughout the school year. “We were trying to come up with ideas to encourage the students and the teachers,” she stated. “(On Aug. 31), we dropped off danishes and coffee for the teachers in the school district. We will do stuff throughout the school year because (the teachers) are working harder than ever.” These efforts, she noted, are meant to supplement activities planned by the schools’ parent-teacher organizations. “We are just a group of parents who all know each other and are willing to continue to make the district a better place,” she said. “We want to be positive and encouraging.” According to Emily Branch, who handles public relations for the TVSD, students have the option to attend school in person for five days, take part in a remote livestream option or attend the Twin Valley Virtual Academy, which See Chalk The Walk pg 2

Parents (from left) Jennifer Dougherty, Melissa Englander, Ashley Rehrig and Megan Kennedy took part in the “Chalk the Walk” event at the Twin Valley Elementary Center on Aug. 26.

It comes as no surprise that we continue to face many of the challenges we have experienced over the past six months. Who hasn’t used the word “uncertainty” more times than they can count? Despite this uncertainty, we have worked hard to keep our families and community safe while providing positive, creative ways to reinforce that we are in this together. We encourage you to continue sharing your stories and connecting with us on social media so we can go on spreading all the good we see in this world. At Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC), we are committed to making adjustments within the current circumstances to try to continue to regularly provide you with the community news you expect to read in this paper. See Letter pg 8

While many schools are utilizing both traditional and alternate learning programs, Lizzie Heinz thought it was particularly important that she complete an outdoor classroom for students and teachers to use at Pope John Paul II Regional Catholic Elementary School (PJP II) in West Brandywine. On Aug. 30, Lizzie, a member of the PJP II Class of 2019, unveiled the new outdoor classroom space in the back of the school. She designed and built the classroom as part of the Girl Scout Gold Award, which is the highest honor in Girl Scouting. In attendance at the dedication ceremony were PJP II teachers and staff members and the Rev. Michael Fitzpatrick, pastor of St. Peter Parish, who blessed the classroom. Parish member Ryan Morris was on hand to provide a reading from Scripture.

4961, first got approval from the school, and she completed the Girl Scout “Go Gold” application. “After hearing that they will be going to school here in person five days a week, I started brainstorming ideas of how to get (students) outside because they are wearing their masks all day,” said Lizzie, explaining how the idea to create the classroom came about. “They can come out, get their masks off and still learn.”

Local church leaders, ministers and pastors are invited to attend a virtual conference titled “The Change Conference” on Tuesday, Sept. 15, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The conference will be hosted at nine locations throughout the United States. In Chester County, the host site will be at the University of Valley Forge, 1401 Charlestown Road, Phoenixville. The conference is being presented by The Change Group, an organization that provides leadership programs for pastors attempting to revitalize their churches. “Last year was our first year, and we had the conference in Irwin, near Pittsburgh,” said Aaron McNatt, who is a coach with The Change Group and a pastor at Wrightsville Assembly of God in Wrightsville, another host site for the conference. “It was single event at a single location. This year, we will be across eight states with regional hosts.” The conference will feature speakers from throughout the United States, including Annie F. Downs, internationally known speaker, author and podcast host. Among the topics to be addressed by the speakers are strengthening existing churches. “The bigger mission with The Change Group is we see a lot of emphasis on church planting, and rightly so, but what we have not seen is an equal emphasis on church revitalization,” said McNatt. “New churches starting every year is encouraging, but there are churches closing. That is the heart of the See Conference pg 8

options for learning.” Students, staff members and teachers wear masks at all times on campus. “People can remove a mask when they are eating or drinking as long as they’re six feet apart,” Branch explained. “If a face-covering creates an unsafe condition to perform a task, it can be taken off or during a 10-minute-or-less ‘mask covering break’ with students six feet apart.” She added that each school in the district is set up to accommodate

So far, Branch said, students and staff members have adapted well to all the changes. “Thank you to our students, teachers, staff and greater Twin Valley community for coming together to help each other and show compassion during the pandemic,” she said. As part of the “Chalk the Walk” event, parents of students in the Twin Valley School District were invited to decorate the sidewalks leading to the entrances of the district buildings with positive messages.

The classroom features more than 20 tree stumps where children may sit. The stumps, made from a fallen ash tree, were placed in the ground with social distancing in mind, and there is a teacher’s bench at the head of the classroom. “We dug holes a couple of inches into the ground, Lizzie explained. “We put in the stumps and covered the area with mulch. “ When offering the blessing, Fitzpatrick thanked Lizzie and those who made the outdoor classroom possible. “We ask that those who made this outdoor classroom possible in this beautiful location and the young people who will take advantage of this space and their teachers will con-

Lizzie said that she plans to add a blackboard and other amenities to the outdoor classroom, as well as pots for flowers and possibly a walkway. She suggested that maybe students could also be involved by decorating the pots or stepping stones. “I am so grateful for everyone who helped with this project, she said. “I still have some final additions to make to the classroom. I wanted to get it finished somewhat before school started (on Aug. 31). I hope that the students and teachers enjoy the space. PJP II is located at 2875 Manor Road (Route 82), West Brandywine. conference. There is still a lot of life in these churches, and there are people that want to see God do work in the next generation. We are trying to encourage and equip pastors to lead the change that needs to happen. McNatt noted that The Change Group is composed of church leaders and senior pastors who have been successful in revitalizing churches. “Pastors that are involved on the leadership level, especially the coaches, have all led turnaround churches, McNatt noted. “I came to (the Wrightsville) church seven years ago, and we had a membership of 29 who were mostly senior adults. By the grace of God, the church now has 200 people and two services every Sunday. Church leaders who attend the conference will learn about what other churches are doing around the country and how they can implement positive changes locally. “I would encourage people to tell their pastors about (the conference) and tell their leaders about it, McNatt said. “(They) can enjoy some great conversation and hear from great leaders across the nation. They will speak specifically to this audience. A fee will be charged to attend the conference. Each site will abide by local COVID-19 guidelines to ensure the safety of participants. COMMUNITYCOURIER - Morgantown/Honey Brook Edition - September 9, 2020 - 9

Neighbors Group To Meet Weekly Meetings may a look a little different, but Neighbors Caring and Sharing, a Christian women’s group that meets weekly at Conestoga Mennonite Church in Morgantown, will begin its 35th year on Tuesday, Sept. 22, with a program from 9:15 to 11 a.m. The theme of the first meeting will be “Camping Out.” It will be an outdoor event, and attendees will enjoy making s’mores. The first meeting of the 2020-21 year will also provide time for the women to socialize, since this will be the first formal meeting of the group at the church since March 10 after the stay-at-home order was issued in Pennsylvania. The opening meeting will be held on

the front portico of the church, and participants are asked to bring their own chairs for seating. Future meetings will be held in the church sanctuary. “The rest (of the meetings) will be in the sanctuary where we can space out,” said Tina Essick, program director. “It’s required to wear a mask to enter the building. As we are seated in the sanctuary, (people) can probably take their masks off.” Meetings will continue each Tuesday from 9:15 to 11 a.m. through June 15, 2021, with a break during the Christmas holiday. There will also be several field trips scheduled by the group. The one on Oct. 6 will be at the Gring’s Mill Recreation Area in Reading. “The walk will be spaced out, and it will be on a (paved surface),” said Essick. “On Oct. 20, we are

going to Mt. Culmen and having a perennial exchange outside. We are looking forward to that.” The meetings begin with refreshments and a prayer time, followed by a guest speaker. Child care is provided for infants through kindergarten-age children. While their moms are at the meeting, children enjoy stories, crafts and ageappropriate activities under the supervision of a teacher. Snacks are provided. All programs and child care are offered free of charge, but donations are welcome. When a craft is the focus of the meeting, registration is required and a small fee is

charged to cover the cost of supplies. In lieu of “Guess Who’s Coming to Brunch,” which had the ladies meeting at each other’s homes in previous years, the group will instead hold a socially distant brunch at the church on the first Tuesday of each month, beginning on Nov. 3. “It will be a time of sharing and fellowship,” said Essick. “The ladies enjoy getting to know each other better, and we thought this would be a way to have it happen rather than go into people’s homes like we normally do.” The brunches will be held in the church’s fellowship hall.
