Serene Green To Perform Bluegrass Concert

Cordell Huyard, director of Cavod Theatre, cannot keep his enthusiasm about the group’s fall show from bubbling over. “‘The Pirates of Penzance’ is such a fun show. It’s hilarious,” gushed Huyard. “Audiences walk away having really enjoyed it (because it’s) such a crowd favorite.” “The Pirates of Penzance” will be staged at Cavod Theatre, 685 W. Main St., New Holland, at 7 p.m. on Fridays, Sept. 20 and 27; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, Sept. 21 and 28; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, Sept. 22 and 29. First produced in 1879, the maritime musical by Gilbert and Sullivan is an energetic work focused on Frederic, played by Nolen Petosky, a young man who, as a child, was mistakenly apprenticed to a pirate rather than a pilot. The error is the fault of Ruth, Frederic’s hard-of-hearing nursemaid, played by See Pirate Musical pg 4

Serene Green, featuring (from left) Steve Leonard, Shane McGeehan, Quentin Fisher and Michael Johnson, will perform in Honey Brook Borough Park on Sept. 15 to close out the borough’s summer Concerts in the Park series. Caleb Zimmerman will play a pirate when Cavod Theatre presents “The Pirates of Penzance” on Fridays, Sept. 20 and 27; Saturdays, Sept. 21 and 28; and Sundays, Sept. 22 and 29.

help local residents in need. Community members are invited to attend the Country Fair, to be held on Saturday, Sept. 21, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the church, located at 220 Hibernia Road, Coatesville. Activities will take place on the front lawn of the church facility. The family-friendly event will include a pig roast, a yard sale, and games for children, including a bounce house.

DELIVERY ONLY! (CASE LOT SALES ONLY)

Vendors and crafters will also be on hand, and there will be live music by All For One Ministries, a Christian band. Food for sale will include roast pork sandwiches, hot dogs and homemade baked goods. Picnic tables will be set up on the church lawn for those who would like to eat on-site. There will also be tables indoors. Admission, parking and activities will be free. “Crafters will charge for their wares, but everything else will be free,” said the Rev. Mark Moore, pastor. “Any donations received for food and the yard sale will be given to local social service agencies in the community that help underresourced people. Some funds will be put into a community assistance account that will enable us to help local folks in times of crisis,” he explained. “(For example), a single mom may call and say, ‘It’s getting cold and my kids don’t have winter coats,’ or a senior citizen may call and say they can’t afford their prescriptions.” Moore explained that the donated money will be given to all people in need, not just congregation members. “(The funds) will be for anybody in the community,” Moore noted. “We want to be known as a church that is here for the community.” One of the activities during the Country Fair will be a large yard sale featuring donated items. All items will be sold by donation only. “Whatever people choose to give is what we will accept,” said Moore. “Any money we receive - Hibernia United Methodist Church will not keep any of it.” People are invited to donate items for the yard sale. No television, computers, furniture or clothing will be accepted.

All For One Ministries, a Christian band, will provide live music during Hibernia United Methodist Church’s upcoming Country Fair on Sept. 21. Those who would like to donate merchandise are asked to contact the church office at 610-384-3553. In addition to raising funds, the event is designed to provide a fun social activity for local residents. “Yes, we’re excited about helping our neighbors in times of need, but we want people to come and get a Coke, a cup of coffee or a sandwich and sit and talk with their neighbors,” Moore said. “We want to be a community church and not just for the people who come here on a Sunday morning. Everybody is welcome here.” Moore was named the pastor at Hibernia UMC on July 1, 2017. His history with the church actually began earlier when he was in his 20s. At that time, when he helped out during a youth group activity, he met his future wife, Karen. “This is the church my wife grew up in.

My wife and I literally met in this building in 1974. We were both college students,” Moore said, noting that the couple has been married for more than 40 years. For more information about the church, readers may call 610-384-3553 or visit www.hiberniaumc.org or www.face book.com/hiberniaumc. The Country Fair will take place rain or shine. In the event of rain, most activities will be moved indoors. Pictured on front: Hibernia United Methodist Church will hold its annual Country Fair on Sept. 21. The event will include a pig roast, children’s activities and a yard sale. Donations accepted at the event will benefit local people in need as well as community service organizations.

of today. “The church used to be the other way around. What is now the front was the back, and what is now the back was the front,” George-Hacker said. “These are the same light fixtures, but they were gas. They were electrified at some point. Even the medallion (on the ceiling) is the same.” Church members surmise that the church’s layout was changed when the stained-glass window was added in 1915. George-Hacker pointed out that in Colonial churches like St. John’s, the sanctuary is located upstairs. At St. John’s, the sanctuary’s focal point is its stained-glass window, which depicts the parish’s patron saint, along with Jesus and little children. “At about 4:30 in the afternoon when the western sun comes in, Jesus’ robe glows. That’s what the

transfiguration must have looked like,” George-Hacker commented. Handmade kneelers, a baptismal font built in the 1700s and an icon of St. John can also be seen in the church. “He died as an old man on the island of Patmos while writing the book of Revelation,” said George-Hacker. In back of the church, visitors will see two walls filled with photographs of past rectors. “This is (nearly) 300 years of clergy; a few pictures (are missing),” George-Hacker said. “Father Lorenz was here the longest at 27 years, and I am only the second female priest in 290 years. I am so honored to be part of that (nearly) 300 years of history.” President James Buchanan’s brother, the Rev. Edward Buchanan, who was married to the sister of composer Stephen Foster, served as rector in the 1800s. Also, George Ross,

a mission of the Church of England, meaning that it predated the Episcopal Church and even the United States of America. John Miller, who owned the Compass Inn, sold ground to the new church for 5 shillings, and the first rector was the Rev. Richard Backhouse. Later, the church became an independent Episcopal parish, then a mission of the Diocese of Pennsylvania and finally, an independent parish again. The first church building was constructed in 1729. “It was a log cabin and it was 22 feet by 20 feet, so it was tiny.” said the Rev. Dr. Nina George-Hacker, rector. The current stone church was built in 1838. People may view a photo of the 1838 church sanctuary on display in the back of the church and compare it to the sanctuary

Jennifer Shaffer. To make matters worse, Frederic’s apprenticeship was supposed to end on the day he turns 21; however, it is discovered that the boy was born on Feb. 29 in a leap year, meaning that he still has many years as an apprentice before he reaches his liberation. Frederic has fallen in love with Mabel, played by Katherine Lindsley. Moses Mariscal plays Mabel’s father, Major-General Stanley, who proclaims himself in a well-known song “the very model of a modern Major-General.” Neal Sheaffer will play the Pirate King, with Francisco Ortiz as Samuel, his lieutenant, and James Paxson as the Sergeant of Police. Cavod’s “Pirates” will be directed by Reji Woods, with musical direction by Michael Truitt and choreography by Jessica Rajski. Huyard said that the show represents an important era in entertainment history. “It’s kind of like the transition from operas to modern-day musical theater,” he said, noting that the comedy is technically an opera. “At the time, the term musical theater (didn’t exist).” Calling the music beautiful, Huyard noted that the vocal parts are incredibly difficult. “It’s an operetta, so the female lead is singing stuff similar to what the female lead in the ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ would sing,” he said, noting that he believes the cast has the background and musical ability to make the show a success. “(These cast members are) some of the strongest vocal talents we have had here,” he said. According to Huyard, the script mixes laughs with heartwarming moments and tops it off with the variety of songs. “The hilarity and comedy of the story is encased in this beautiful music,” said Huyard. “It’s hilarious, but it is also heartwarming.” He noted that the timeless themes appeal to people of all ages. “There is a beautiful love story, but there are moments where you just have to laugh at these characters,” he said. “Who doesn’t love pirates running around on stage making fools of themselves?” Huyard reported that cast members are having fun exploring their parts. “The characters are zany and off the wall, and playing a pirate is so much fun,” he noted, adding that the daughters of the Major-General are fun and quirky See Pirate Musical pg 5

times like olives, figs and grapes and dipping oil with bread.” Meetings will continue each Tuesday from 9:15 to 11 a.m. through April 14, 2020, with a break during the Christmas holiday. There will also be three field trips scheduled by the group in April, May and June of next year. Each meeting begins with refreshments and a prayer time, followed by a guest speaker. Child care is provided for infants through kindergarten-age children. While their moms are at the meeting, children enjoy stories, crafts and ageappropriate activities under the supervision of a teacher. Snacks are provided. All programs and child care are offered free of charge, but donations are welcome. When a craft is the focus of the meeting registration is required, and a small fee is charged to cover the cost of supplies. This will be the case on Oct. 1, when the focus of the meeting will be “Make a Succulent Pumpkin.” Attendees will be asked to bring their own pumpkins. “We will clean out the pumpkin, take out the seeds and put in a flower arrangement in the pumpkin,” Essick explained. “You can use it as a centerpiece for your table or outside your door. The plants will be included in the fee. “ The group has also planned several outings. “We’re going off-site to do projects, visit a nursing home and do a service day,” said Essick, noting that the group will visit the Zerbe Retirement Community on Nov. 19. “We will be doing a craft with the residents.” Last year, the group hosted a speaker from GAiN (Global Aid Network), a nonprofit organization that ships humanitarian aid packages to people in need throughout the world. This year, the group will take part in a service day at GAiN’s Logistics Center in Mount Joy on April 7, 2020. A new program, “Seeing God’s Unique Creation Through the Bubbles,” will be presented on Jan. 14, 2020, featuring guest speakers Krystal and Chad Frankhouser. The pair will talk about God’s unique creatures that live in the ocean. “They are scuba divers, and they will show films done while scuba diving,” said Essick. Another highlight will be the “My Favorite Things” meeting on March 10, 2020, during which attendees will be asked to buy or make three different items valued at $5 or less to share with others. “You can bring homemade jam or jelly or bake a plate of cookies or bring your favorite lip gloss or hand soap,” Essick explained. “You stand up and say why it’s one of your favorite things, and then we pull a name and that person gets (the item). It was a big hit last year; everyone liked it.” Essick said that the fellowship group continues to grow and that last year even more local women joined the group from the Lancaster, Berks and Chester county areas. “Attendance was great through the whole year. We had a number of young mothers and other people invite friends,” said Essick. “We welcome any woman to come to enjoy fellowship and make new friends. We have a lot of exciting things going on.” Conestoga Mennonite Church is located at 2779 Main St. (Route 23), Morgantown. For more information, readers may visit www.conestogamennonite church.org/neighbors.html or call the church office at 610-286-9124. In lieu of paying an admission fee, attendees are asked to bring nonperishable food items to donate to the Honey Brook Food Pantry. During the concert, food will be available for sale by the Honey Brook Lions Club. Visitors should bring chairs and blankets for seating. Serene Green is composed of Pennsylvania musicians Quentin Fisher on mandolin, Shane McGeehan on bass, Steve Leonard on banjo and Michael Johnson on guitar. Audiences can expect to hear original songs as well as music by performers who have influenced the band members. “We definitely put an emphasis on our original material, though we like to draw from the countless bluegrass standards written by the pioneers of the music,” said Johnson. “We’re inspired by the sound and style of Bill Monroe, the Johnson Mountain Boys, and the Del McCoury Band, to name a few, so it’s only fitting to incorporate their music into our own.” Interestingly, the band got its name from a paint color card like those a person might find at a home improvement store. “We were told early on that we could find a good band name within a paint color index - you know, those things you use to find the right wall color for your new bathroom,” Johnson said. “There was just something about Serene Green that we liked.” Since early 2017, Serene Green has toured more than 15 states throughout the United States. The quartet released its first all-original studio album, “To Whom It Pertains,” in June 2017 and its second studio album, “Have At It,” in August 2019. This is the first time that the band will play in Honey Brook, although it has scheduled concerts at nearby locations. “We have a show at Hidden River Brewing Company in Douglassville, just outside Chester County, coming up on Sunday, Oct. 20,” Johnson noted. “In the past, we played at the Steel City Coffeehouse in Phoenixville, supporting the great (bluegrass performer) Jenni Lyn.” He said that the band is used to playing in all sorts of venues, both inside and outside. “It’s not ideal to play outside when it’s cold, windy or raining. However, we prefer playing outdoors, especially when the conditions are good,” Johnson stated. Johnson encourages the community to turn out for the upcoming show. “This show is a family-friendly event,” he said. “We encourage people to bring their children, who are often our biggest fans.” To learn more about the band and to listen to samples of the band’s music, readers may visit www.serenegreenblue grass.com or www.facebook.com/ SereneGreenMusic. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be canceled by 1 p.m. on the day of the show. There will be a recorded message on the borough office line at 610-273-2020. For more information, readers may visit www.honeybrook borough.net/Concerts.html.
