Community Invited To Enjoy Poole Forge Day BY FRANCINE FULTON

Poole Forge Day, featuring children’s activities, food, crafts, live music, pony rides, goat races, a volleyball tournament and more, will take place at Historic Poole Forge, 1940 Main St., Narvon, on Saturday, Sept. 18, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission and parking are free. The day will begin at the picnic pavilion, where there will be a presentation by the Raven Ridge Wildlife Center. The program will

feature live animals, including reptiles and a raptor show with hawks and owls. Arts and crafts will also be available for children in the pavilion, including twig art, where children can make crafts using items from nature. The popular goat races will take place in the afternoon. “The goats and their owners will travel through an obstacle course this year,” noted Dawn Ekdahl, Poole Forge executive director. “It’s very cute. Each of the goats has its own personality.” See Poole Forge Day pg 7

arents and youths interested in learning more about Scouting are invited to attend Unit 543’s open house on Monday, Sept. 20, at Robeson Lutheran Church, 3520 Plow Road, Mohnton. Visitors can stop by at any time between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. to learn about the various groups that Unit 543 offers for both boys and girls and the numerous activities that they enjoy, such as camping, biking, orienteering and canoeing. During the event, boys and girls will be able to progress through various learning stations, while adult leaders will be available to answer questions from parents. “There will be a camping station, where there will be a tent set up, and they can see some camping gear and cooking (demonstrations),” said Ginny Thorpe, who is the assistant scoutmaster for Troop 543G, one

May and for planned activities over the summer, including camping. “This summer, they went on a 70-mile canoe trip down the Delaware River,” reported Thorpe. “The trip took them four days, and they camped along the river for three nights.” The Scouts also spent a week at Hawk Mountain Scout Reservation (HMSR). During the school year, they plan and participate in campouts, service projects, planning meetings and Scout skills training activities. Each summer they attend a week of summer camp, and they go on a troop 50-miler, typically a five-day trip rotating between backpacking, canoeing and biking. Troop 543G, Unit 543’s newest group, is composed of 16 girls. Troop 543G went to summer camp at HMSR, completed its own fourday, 70-mile trip down the Delaware River, took part in orienteering competitions and participated in a variety of service projects.

Community members are invited to attend the St. Mark’s Lutheran Church Fall Festival on Saturday, Sept. 18, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The entire church property will be utilized for the event, which will include food sales, live music and children’s activities. Admission is free.

Thorpe explained that Unit 543 has three groups: a Cub Scout Pack (Pack 543), with separate dens for boys and girls; an all-male Troop 543; and the newly added all-female Troop 543G. Pack 543 is for children in kindergarten through fifth grade. “The Scouts are separated into dens by grade and gender, but everyone meets together for a monthly pack meeting and an activity,” Thorpe noted. “The pack organizes outdoor activities, field trips to local places of interest, family campouts, an annual Pinewood Derby and service projects.” Troop 543 currently consists of approximately 30 Scouts who meet weekly from September through

4-H Livestock Show And Sale Held The Chester County 4-H Livestock Show and Sale was held on Aug. 9 to 11 at the Romano 4-H Center in Honey Brook. Judge Ed Keeny commented on the depth in each class in both the market goat and sheep shows and congratulated the exhibitors on the quality of their projects. The beef cattle were judged by Drew Cashman, and on Aug. 10, judge Kyle Livingston worked his way through a competitive market hog show. Record crowds were on hand each night to watch the 4-H livestock shows and view the various projects completed by community clubs and outreach members. The sale averaged well above the market prices on auction day. Four steers, 79 hogs, eight goats and 47 lambs were shown and sold at the annual event. Buyers came from all over the region to support the sale. The Champion Steer, weighing 1,388 pounds, was

shown by David Bell of Nottingham and purchased by Oxford Feed and Lumber, a long-time supporter of the Chester County livestock program. The Reserve Champion Steer, weighing 1,441 pounds, was shown by Olivia Macomber of Elverson and purchased by Shane Yarnall of Downingtown. The Champion Market Hog was also shown by David. The 277-pound hog was purchased by Mid-Atlantic Farm Credit of Mount Joy. The 268-pound Reserve Champion was shown by Sarah Uhlman of Exton and purchased by longtime sale supporter Margaret Duprey of Cherry Knoll Farm. Sixty-one of the 79 market hogs in the sale were sold as freezer hogs, exemplifying the dedication of the swine club members in marketing their projects to private individuals. David triplicated his success with the Champion Market Lamb. His 107-pound lamb sold to John Rock Inc. of

Sadsburyville. The Reserve Lamb was exhibited by Emilie Howe of Downingtown, and her 115-pound lamb sold to Howe Family Farm, also from Downingtown. A pair of siblings from Cochranville exhibited the Champion and Reserve Champion Market Goats. Payton Engle and his sister Lyla showed the Grand and Reserve Goats. The Grand Champion Goat was purchased by Marlin Becker of New Holland, and the Reserve Champion was purchased by Dale and Karen Stoltzfus of Gap. As an added attraction, a lamb donated by River Lease of Coatesville was auctioned off to benefit the senior livestock judging team’s travel expenses. The team won the state judging contest and plans to attend several regional contests this fall. The lamb was sold and donated back 17 times by 19 different businesses and individuals. In addition, 23 individuals and businesses provided additional funding to the team through cash donations. Throughout the shows on Aug. 9 and 10, showmanship

was hotly contested, which is usual for this 4-H show. Grand Champion Beef Showman was David, and Reserve Grand Champion Showman was Melinda Stoltzfus of Coatesville. Payton was Grand Champion Sheep Showman, and David earned Reserve Champion and Champion Showman. Reserve Champion Showman was Emma Uhlman of Exton. The honorary showman was Cameron Johnson of Elverson. The newest event of the fair was the Supreme Champion Showman competition held on Aug. 11. The eight participants were Melinda, Kaycee Engle, David, Ethan Macomber of Elverson, Emma, and Jeremiah Howe of Downingtown. The members participated in a round robin style show and were put through their paces by judge Drew Cashman of Elverson. The Supreme Champion Showman was Melinda, and David was the Reserve. For further information on the 4-H program in Chester County, contact the Penn State Extension Office at 610-696-3500.

March and Isabela March, from Wilmington, Del., to join me, along with Fiddling Ted Fenstermacher from Macungie and Rick Schmehl from Spring Township. Isabela is a champion fiddler and mandolinist, and it’s very rare to be able to see her and her banjo-playing father in concert together.” The musicians will perform traditional Americana, bluegrass, folk and gospel music using traditional Appalachian Mountain instruments such as banjo, guitar, fiddle, mandolin and bass guitar. “We expect to dazzle the audience with some upbeat twin fiddle tunes as you’d hear on the Grand Ole Opry,” Kline said. “We perform a well-balanced mixture of familiar cover songs along with some of my original music, which regular fans know and appreciate and newbies will enjoy, too.” The band will play several sets of music throughout the day. “It’ll be very casual, creating a really nice interactive vibe between the audience and the band,” said Kline. “One of our hallmark traits is that we give the audience many chances to sing and clap along.” In the past, Kline has provided worship music at the church. “I am not a member of St. Mark’s, but I have been a part of many musical worship services there through the years with pastor (Jim) Farnsworth,” he added. St. Mark’s is located at 5 Brooke Manor, Birdsboro. For more information about the Fall Festival, call 610-5828167 or visit www.stmark birdsboro.org or www.face book.com/StMarksBirdsboro.

More information and a link to register for the tournament are available at www.stmark birdsboro.org/events by scrolling down to “St. Mark’s Fall Festival 2021.” Community groups that will have displays will include Eastern Star, Thrivent Financial and Boone Area Library, Birdsboro, which will sell history books. The Knight of Columbus from Immaculate Conception Church in Douglassville will give out cotton candy, and Immaculate Conception Academy students will sell macaroni and cheese. Cub Scouts from the church will offer hot dogs and prepackaged popcorn. Members of the local chapter of the Sea Cadet Corps will have pretzels for sale and be in charge of traffic control. A highlight of the day will be a performance by Dave Kline & The Mountain Folk Band. “ We’re bringing a very unique and entertaining five-piece band to the festival,” said band leader Dave Kline. “It’ll be the only concert this year where I’m using this particular configuration of musicians because I’ve arranged for fatherdaughter (duo) PJ
