“(Congregation members) wanted to donate because they feel called to do that. It is beautiful when people take ownership of something and make it happen. We hope this will be a blessing to the Honey Brook community.” In addition to the pantry, the church offers a prayer box, which is located on its front lawn. The wooden box, which was installed in September of 2017, resembles a miniature church building, complete with
red doors and a church steeple. “The top section opens up where the red church doors are, and there is paper, a pen and a little shelf for people to write down their prayers,” explained Wisneski. The prayer requests can then be slipped through the slot on the front of the box below the miniature church building. Community members may submit prayer requests and place them in the box anonymously. “(The prayer box) is for anybody walking (or driving) by. You don’t have to give your name,” said Wisneski,

year will also provide time for the women to socialize, since this will be the first formal meeting of the group at the church since March 10 after the stay-at-home order was issued in Pennsylvania. The opening meeting will be held on the front portico of the church, and participants are asked to bring their own chairs for seating. Future meetings will be held in the church sanctuary. “The rest (of the meetings) will be in the sanctuary where we can space out, said Tina Essick, program director. “It’s required to wear a mask to enter the building. As we are seated in the sanctuary, (people) can probably take their masks off. Meetings will continue each Tuesday from 9:15 to 11 a.m. through June 15, 2021, with a break during the Christmas holiday. There will also be several field trips scheduled by the group. The one on Oct. 6 will be at the Gring’s Mill Recreation Area in Reading. “The walk will be spaced out, and it will be on a (paved surface), said Essick. “On Oct. 20, we are going to Mt. Culmen and having a perennial exchange outside. We are looking forward to that. The meetings begin with refreshments and a prayer time, followed by a guest speaker. Child care is provided for infants through kindergartenage children. While their moms are at the meeting, children enjoy stories, crafts and ageappropriate activities under the supervision of a teacher. Snacks are provided. All programs and child care
are offered free of charge, but donations are welcome. When a craft is the focus of the meeting, registration is required and a small fee is charged to cover the cost of supplies. In lieu of “Guess Who’s Coming to Brunch, which had the ladies meeting at each other’s homes in previous years, the group will instead hold a socially distant brunch at the church on the first Tuesday of each month, beginning on Nov. 3. “It will be a time of sharing and fellowship, said Essick. “The ladies enjoy getting to know each other better, and we thought this would be a way to have it happen rather than go into people’s homes like we normally do. The brunches will be held in the church’s fellowship hall. For Nov. 3, the food will be prepared by the hospitality committee. For subsequent meetings, attendees will be asked to bring food to share with the group. Also new this year is a DVD Bible study, “Armor of God, which will be featured beginning on Nov. 10 and continuing on Jan. 12, Jan. 26, Feb. 9 and Feb. 23, 2021. “We will watch the DVD and then discuss it, noted Essick. In addition to the new programs, there will be returning guest speakers, including the following: Carol Cool, Oct. 13, “Living in the Present: Practicing the Lord’s Prayer; Crystal Funk, Oct. 27, “Serving (God) in Haiti; Shyla Royer, Dec. 8, “Making Christmas Ornaments; Donna Martin, Jan. 19, 2021, “Stretch
for Jesus; and Patti Tingen, Feb. 16, 2021, “With Every Breath Live Life Well. “On April 13, Tabitha Shilalo will present an inspirational talk, and Carmen Weber will lead us in knotting comforters on March 2 (for distribution to the Mennonite Central Committee), Essick added. “We are happy to have those people return. Conestoga Mennonite Church is located at 2779 Main St. (Route 23), Morgantown. For more information and a complete calendar of events, readers may visit www. conestogamennonitechurch.org /neighbors.html or call the church office at 610-286-9124.

Members of the TVCEF will select one winner for each category. “This is an opportunity to recognize those who go above and beyond the normal contributions made by others and are known as leaders in the community, Weller said. TVCEF is a nonprofit organization created and administered by an independent board of community volunteers serving Berks and Chester counties. According to www.tvcef.org, TVCEF’s mission is “to serve as a link between business, the school district and the community to provide educational, cultural and recreational opportunities. TVCEF provides annual grants to Twin Valley See Nominations pg 6

Events Planned At Dog Park A Letter From The Publisher The Humane Society of Berks County is offering a series of outdoor family events at the Danielle Ruiz-Murphy Center Dog Park, located at 503 S. Center Road, Birdsboro. The programs began on Sept. 12 and will continue on selected dates through Friday, Nov. 6. “We are going to be hosting a variety of dog park events, some movie screenings for the whole family, Sunday Fundays with live music, a Halloween party for kids and even a Halloween movie night just for adults,” said Lauren Henderson, director of events and corporate relations for Humane Pennsylvania. “Next to the dog park we have an open field. This huge piece of land acts as an outdoor amphitheater. Folks will sit up the hill, which will allow people to spread out and enjoy the (activities) outside.” The opening event, Tilly’s Terrific Movie Night, was held on Sept. 12 and featured a screening of the movie “Trolls World Tour.” The next events, Spike’s Sunday Fundays featuring live music, will be held on Sundays, Sept. 27 and Oct. 18. “Those band details are not confirmed as yet, but the events will be held from 1 to 4 p.m.,” said Henderson, noting there will be an admission fee. Halloween events will follow the live music programs. On Friday, Oct. 30, from 6 to 9 p.m., there will be a Kids Halloween Party and Tilly’s Terrific Movie Night featuring the showing of “Hotel Transylvania.” “(Children) will receive a little baggie of candy when they come,” noted Henderson. For adults, Tilly’s Terrific Movie Night will feature “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” from 7:30 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31. “We will wrap up on Nov. 6 with another movie night and we will show ‘Up,’” said Henderson. Hosting the outdoor events is part of an effort to utilize the dog park for community activities while raising money for the Humane Society. Several of the society’s events, including Pints for Pups and Tailwaggers Trick or Treat, were canceled due to COVID-19. All money raised will support the animals cared for by the organization, as well as community programs and initiatives. “We used (the dog park) last August when we showed ‘The Secret Life of Pets,” Henderson noted. “We are hoping that folks come out for (these events as well).”
Attendees should bring blankets or lawn chairs for seating. Food will be available to purchase from local food trucks. It is suggested that tickets for Tilly’s Terrific Movie Nights and Spike’s Sunday Fundays be purchased in advance because seating is limited due to COVID-19 restrictions. Seat upgrades are available for an additional fee. Upgraded sections are limited to six people. According to www.humane pa.org, events will be operating under the current CDC guide-
lines for social distancing and will require masks to be worn when attendees are not seated and are walking throughout the event area. The designated spaces in the first three rows will be socially distant to comply with regulations, and Humane Pennsylvania requires those in the open seating to space themselves out accordingly. For more information or to purchase tickets, readers may visit www.humanepa.org/events. More information is also available at www.facebook.com /HumanePAPartners.
It comes as no surprise that we continue to face many of the challenges we have experienced over the past six months. Who hasn’t used the word “uncertainty” more times than they can count? Despite this uncertainty, we have worked hard to keep our families and community safe while providing positive, creative ways to reinforce that we are in this together. We encourage you to continue sharing your stories and connecting with us on social media so we can go on spreading all the good we see in this world.
At Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC), we are committed to making adjustments within the current circumstances to try to continue to regularly provide you with the community news you expect to read in this paper. EPC has not been immune to the tough decisions that we’ve all had to make during this pandemic. With our highest priority being to maintain the best local news coverage, we have made some changes that you will begin to see starting this week. To that end, this community paper will be distributed to your household every two weeks,
