Nearly 500 youngsters from local schools, as well as homeschool students, had an opportunity to learn about history through hands-on activities during Student Day on Sept. 6. The annual event was part of the Hay Creek Festival at Historic Joanna Furnace Iron Works in Morgantown. During the day, students were invited to complete a chore list, which asked them to take part in age-appropriate educational tasks such as washing clothes, kneading bread, making paper, carving wood and making candles. Those who completed their chore list earned a free wagon ride around the historic complex. In the Laundry Area, Hay Creek Valley Historical Association (HCVHA) volunteers washed clothes by hand with a washboard, as well a hand-powered washing machine that included a See Student Day pg 6

CrossNet Ministries is located in three buildings on Franklin Street, and activities will be held in all three locations. The ministry, which has been a fixture in New Holland for more than 25 years, currently offers a youth center, food and nutrition center, Power Packs affiliation, free summer lunch program, and a number of other community programs. More information about CrossNet and Community Connection may be found at www.elancocross.org. Readers who have specific questions may call CrossNet at 717355-2454. On Sept. 9, CrossNet Ministries began a new program called Community Connection. The program will run each Monday evening from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at various CrossNet locations on Franklin Street in New Holland. Organizers have planned a variety of activities, including Zumba, cooking demonstrations by food and nutrition manager Amy Marburger, and a community meal, among other activities for all interested members of the ELANCO community. With a regular schedule of activities in place for four Mondays each month, Joan Yunginger, director of social services with CrossNet, and Aryn Burda, case and resource manager, decided that the fifth Monday in September would give them an opportunity to do something special. “On the fifth Monday (in September), we will share our vision for Community Connection and why we thought this would be a good idea,” said Yunginger. “We have had people request (activities) like this for adults.” According to Yunginger, the gathering on Monday, Sept. 30, at 5:30 p.m., which she and Burda are calling Nachos and Conversation based on the snacks and sodas they will be serving, will begin when they hand out a survey to help begin the discussion. “Then we will break into small groups with flip charts to have brainstorming sessions,” said Yunginger. “We would love to have conversations about things (participating community members) would like to see.” CrossNet has a number of resources available for area residents to utilize. “We have the youth center, conference room, and youth center space,” said Yunginger. “They could come in and bake cookies for a

cookie exchange or ... make applesauce together.” Yunginger said that learning the specifics of what residents would like the program to offer is a goal of the fifth Monday agenda. “Do they want Zumba, Pound, yoga?” she asked. “What are educational things they would like to see?” Among the activities already planned are a tenant rights workshop presented by Lancaster Housing Opportunity Partnership on Monday, Oct. 7, at 5:30 p.m. in the Food and Nutrition Center and an ELANCO Pre-K Night on Monday, Nov. 4, at 5:30 p.m. at the youth center. “We want an educational or health component to (the program),” explained Yunginger, who added that interests and community requests will determine what the program will look like in 2020. “We are looking for ways to build additional resources in the community that would involve increasing social activities while encouraging health,” said Yunginger, who added that the monthly community meals, which sometimes include visits by the Anchored by Grace Clothing Bank, have been well attended. “People come in and chat and get clothing,” she said. “Zumba is a great way to get moving and stay healthy. There are all kinds of possibilities.”

All the clothes were hung out to dry with clothespins on a clothesline. Children were invited to help the laundress by carrying water and helping scrub the clothes. In the Early American Crafts Area, students learned about the art of quilling, which involves taking pieces of paper and rolling them into different shapes and gluing them together to create decorative designs. “All the flowers start out with coils, and you pinch one end to (create) a teardrop shape and you put the teardrop shapes together, which will give you a flower,” explained HCVHA volunteer Sandy Hart. Hart buys paper that is precut, but she noted that during the time Joanna Furnace was in operation, the women would have cut the strips themselves. “They would have used (the quilled objects) for a decorative purpose. It wasn’t something everyone would have been doing - mostly the upper class,” she stated. “They would not have made snowflakes and dragons. They would See Student Day pg 8

someone will speak about what CCWS is and the services we provide,” said Michelle Maloney, CCWS development director. Participants will then walk a short distance along Pennsylvania Avenue and across its intersection with Route 282 to the entrance of the Struble Trail in Kardon Park. The race will start at the head of the Struble Trail. The 5K will begin at 9 a.m. “It is a paved trail,” Maloney noted. “You can either walk the trail or run it this year.” Parents with children in strollers will be welcome. The race will be professionally timed. Awards will be given to the top male and female finishers in each age category. There will be a team award for the largest group, along with awards for the individuals who raise the most money. The awards ceremony will be held in Kerr Park at approximately 10 a.m. at the conclusion of the 5K. Snacks and a time for fellowship will also be offered at the post-race event. New incentives for walkers and runners will be offered this year. Those who raise $50 will receive a swag bag filled with gifts, and those who fundraise $100 will receive a swag bag and have their registration fee refunded. “Each person that registers gets a link to their own personal fundraising page, and then they can share that on social media and via email,” explained Maloney. In addition, all attendees are encouraged to bring an item to donate at the event, such as diapers, wipes and new children’s clothing and maternity clothing and blankets. All donations will be given to CCWS clients in need. Proceeds from donations and 5K registration fees will help provide free medical and educational services to women and families facing unplanned pregnancies. CCWS, a nondenominational ministry, supports families physically, emotionally and financially by providing basic pregnancy care, parenting education, peer counseling, a homeless prevention program and community referrals and parenting education classes offered in both Spanish and English. CCWS has been serving county residents as a pregnancy resource center since 1985. It has offices at 1028 E. Lincoln Highway in Coatesville, at 645 E. Baltimore Pike in Kennett Square and at 139 W. Market St. in West Chester. CCWS offers medical services, including pregnancy tests, prenatal vitamins and limited ultrasounds, which provide a new mother with an opportunity to see her baby and confirm pregnancy viability and the expected due date. All services are free and confidential. For more information about the 5K and to register, readers may visit www.run signup.com/CCWS. A link to register can also be found at www.facebook.com/ccws medical. There will separate registration fees for adults age 18 and over and students ages 13 to 17. Children age 12 and under may participate for free. The first 100 registrants will receive a T-shirt. For more information about CCWS, readers may contact Myriam Ruager, CCWS executive director, at 610-383-0930 or visit www.ccwsmedical.org. Businesses and individuals who wish to be a sponsor or are interested in donating prize items are asked to contact Donna Faragaso at dana@ccwsmedical.org.

Spring Gulch RV Campground, 475 Lynch Road, New Holland, celebrated its annual First Responders Weekend during the weekend of Sept. 7 and 8. The campground has hosted First Responders Weekend for more than 20 years. Spring Gulch RV Campground holds the celebration as a way to give back to local first responders. The campground estimates there were nearly 100 first responders and family members taking part in the weekend’s festivities. In addition to showing appreciation to local first responders, the event gave campers a chance to learn more about what first responders do. Children were able to explore a fire truck visit and even use the fire hose.

have made random shapes and then placed them together to make patterns.” Students also were able to meet soldiers in the festival’s Civil War encampment. Reenactor Dave Culp talked about Army hardtack, which is a hard biscuit or cracker that was eaten by soldiers during military operations. “They soaked them in their coffee to get soft so they could eat them. They (ate) 12 of these a day; that was the standard issue,” said Culp. He also displayed the types of items that soldiers might have carried with them. “They had a sewing kit to keep their uniform neat, a letter writing kit and a deck of cards, (among other items),” Culp said. “They carried a pocket Bible over their hearts.” He also showed the students how to play a dice game enjoyed by the soldiers. Also during Student Day, youngsters were able view an antique car and tractor parade, tour the historic site’s buildings, watch the operation of antique machinery and enjoy various singers and entertainers. One of the most popular programs was presented by Jesse Rothacker, herpetologist and founder of Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary, who often spoke with a live snake draped around his shoulders during his presentation. “There are four families of reptiles - snakes, lizards, crocodilians and turtles,” Rothacker said at the start of the program. “And you will meet all four today.” His sense of humor was evident when he made the false announcement that a boa constructor was loose in the Joanna Furnace complex. “If you see him, just contact us,” Rothacker joked. The next event at Historic Joanna Furnace will be the Hay Creek Apple Festival, which will be held on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 13, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visitors to the event will be able to enjoy many apples dishes, including fresh apple cider, fritters, pies, tarts, dumplings and more.
