Honey Brook Sets Final Summer Concert BY FRANCINE FULTON
The final event in the Honey Brook Borough Concerts in the Park series will take place on Sunday, Sept. 26, when the band Highway 61 Revival will be featured from 5 to 7:30 p.m. In lieu of an admission fee, attendees are asked to bring nonperishable food items for donation to the Honey Brook Food Pantry.
Highway 61 Revival is a group of Philadelphia-based musicians who pay tribute to one of their favorite songwriters - Bob Dylan. However, concert attendees do not have to be Dylan fans to attend. In fact, according to band member Paul Wilkinson, the audience will be familiar with the tunes the band will perform, which were written by Dylan, a prolific songwriter. See Concert In The Park pg 4

In lieu of “Guess Who’s Coming to Brunch,” which had the ladies meeting at one another’s homes in previous years, the group will instead hold five brunches at the church. Birdsboro Center Names New Director, Adds Programming BY FRANCINE FULTON
“It’s been here a very long time and it has served many purposes,” said Lisa Kraljevich, who was recently named the executive director of the Birdsboro Community Memorial Center, when describing the historic building that was constructed more than 250 years ago. “There is a lot of space, and we are looking to add a lot of new programs.”

Norma Denlinger and Tina Essick, program chair. Essick noted that one of the most popular Neighbors programs is “My Favorite Things,” during which attendees bring three different things valued under $5 each to share with the other members. This year’s “My Favorite Things” meeting will be on Oct. 12. “Last year, I brought a book I enjoy to share. Someone brought chocolate chip cookies with a recipe,” Essick said. “It may be a favorite cake that your family loves with a recipe or your favorite plant, nail polish or ChapStick.” New speakers this year will include Erica Kanter, who will talk about Anchored Ministries of Elverson on Oct. 5, and Marian Gehman, who will share her personal testimony on Jan. 18, 2022, in a program titled, “The Dust of Progress: Laughter and Life Lessons While Under Construction.” “(She will talk about) dealing with challenges in your life,” noted Essick. Another new speaker will be Shaelagh Martin, the wife of new Conestoga Mennonite Church pastor Jeremiah Martin, who will present a program on Jan. 11, 2022.

A virtual session of “Effective Communication Strategies” will be presented by the Alzheimer’s Association in partnership with the Heritage of Green Hills, Shillington. The free session will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 22, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Attendees will learn how communication is more than just talking and listening; it is also about sending and receiving messages through attitude, tone of voice and body language. As the disease progresses, individuals living
with Alzheimer’s or other dementias lose the ability to use words, but families can find new ways to connect. Participants will explore how communication changes when someone is living with Alzheimer’s, learn how to interpret the verbal and behavioral communication and identify strategies to help them connect and communicate at each stage of the disease. Registration is required by calling 800-272-3900 or visiting https://action.alz.org /mtg/76099171.

New Holland Fair To Return Kristie Overly, who handles premiums for the New Holland Fair exhibits, is happy to be looking ahead to the 89th annual Farmers Fair after the 2020 event had to be canceled. “We are really glad to be back, and we are looking forward to large, safe crowds,”
said Overly, who noted that the best part of her work with the fair is seeing children and others earn prizes. “When the kids work on something - a craft, Legos model, or raising an animal - and they bring it to the fair … (and) when they get a prize, it is so rewarding for us to see,” she shared. The 2021 New Holland
Farmers Day Association Fair will be held from Wednesday, Sept. 29, through Saturday, Oct. 2, on Main Street, Roberts Avenue, Franklin Street, and Fulton Street. The fair will kick off on Sept. 29 with the parade, which will begin at 7 p.m. The Spectacle of Bands competition, which is part of the parade, will be held, with the 2019 Cup of Honor winner Downingtown High School leading the parade. The fair will also feature a midway, exhibits in a range of categories, a long john eating contest, a horseshoe pitching contest, a pedal power contest for children, pet and baby parades, games, and a variety of food vendors. The animal competitions will be held in the tents on Fulton Street. Swine will be judged on Tuesday, Sept. 28, at 5:30 p.m. Goats will be judged at 1:30 p.m. on Thurs-
day, Sept. 30, and sheep will be judged the same day at 4 p.m. The competition is open to 4-H and FFA members from Lancaster County. Safety will be a priority for this year’s Farmers Fair. “We want to encourage people to be respectful of others’ space,” said fair president Paulene Redding. Overly added that the number of sanitation stations available at the fair will be increased. She also requested that those bringing exhibits to the New Holland Farmers Day Association building, located at 101 W. Franklin St., New Holland, do so between 2 and 5 p.m. on Sept. 28 to help avoid crowding.

Birdsboro Center from pg 1 According to www.bcmcbirdsboro.com, the Birdsboro Community Memorial Center once served as the home of ironmaster William Bird, who completed the mansion in 1751. Later, in 1796, it was home to Matthew Brooke and his wife, Elizabeth, who purchased the Birdsboro Iron Works Company from the Bird family. In the early part of the 20th century, a group of local businesspeople wanted to estab-
lish a recreational center for youths, and they organized a YMCA at the site. In the 1960s the YMCA disbanded, but with the help of the United Way of Berks County, the center was kept open. Today, the Birdsboro Community Memorial Center operates as a nonprofit organization and remains partnered with the United Way. “We survive on membership dues, grants and donations,” Kraljevich stated, noting that

The University of Rhode Island recently announced that Lauren Elizabeth Flaxenburg, Birdsboro, graduated in the university’s 135th commencement in May. Flaxenburg received a Bachelor of Science in animal science and technology.

“Whether you know it or not, Bob Dylan wrote songs made famous by other people,” said Wilkinson. “(He wrote) everything from ‘Blowin’ in the Wind,’ which was done by Peter, Paul and Mary, to ‘Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door’ that was a was a big hit by Guns N’ Roses. Jimi Hendrix played ‘All Along the Watchtower’ and The Byrds played ‘Mr. Tambourine Man,’ and Bob wrote those. He wrote ‘Make You Feel My Love,” by Adele.” In addition to Wilkinson on guitar, the band consists of Daniel Bower on drums, Brad Hinton on guitar and lap steel, Tim Celfo on bass and Ben Smith on keyboards. All of the band members play in other groups, but they come together to perform the Dylan tribute. “Over the years, being part of the same music community, we talked about music, and Bob Dylan came up,” Wilkinson explained. “Six or seven years ago we started doing an annual show at the Kennett Flash in Kennett Square for (Dylan’s) birthday. We named the band Highway 61 Revival and started doing a couple of extra shows throughout the year.” Wilkinson said audiences will enjoy singing along during the concert and will appreciate the musicianship of the band members. “There is a familiarity
there. Beyond that, if you don’t know the songs, it’s great group of musicians playing bluesy rock ’n’ roll with vocal harmonies,” he said. “Some people will start singing along and Bob Dylan fans will get surprised at which songs we are playing because there are so many. He has written over 500 songs, so we will try to feature a bunch of them (that) Sunday. We also pull in some deeper cuts that people might not know but they will also enjoy.” Wilkinson noted that Dylan continues to be an active working musician at the age of 80. “He just put out a record in 2020,” he noted, adding, “(Dylan) won the Nobel Prize for literature.” For more information about the band, visit www.facebook.com/Hwy 61Revival. The Honey Brook Borough Park is located at 71 Pequea Ave. (Route 10), directly behind the Honey Brook Post Office. For additional information, visit www.honeybrookborough.net and select “Public Info” and then “Concerts in the Park.” In the event of inclement weather, the decision to cancel will be made by 1 p.m. on the day of the show. A cancellation message will be recorded on the borough phone line at 610-273-2020.
Fair from pg 3 Redding has been handling the parade for five years. This year, she is changing up the lineup based on requests from high school bands that travel to take part. “It’s late (when the parade is over) for high school kids that come from a great distance,” explained Redding, who will intersperse high school bands with floats and other participants in the first half of the parade. Both Redding and Overly noted a need for volunteers for the event. “A significant number of our volunteers are in a more vulnerable population, so we are hoping to attract new volunteers,” said Overly, who added that many area residents have expressed interest in keeping
the event going. Volunteers who put in a specified number of hours will be invited to a banquet, which will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 16, at Yoder’s. Rules and entry forms for exhibits may be found in the New Holland Fair Premium Book, which can be picked up at Yoder’s Country Market, Stauffer’s Drug Store, or the Tannery Antiques store. Ride tickets may be purchased at those locations and through Boy Scouts New Holland Troop 48, the New Holland Church of the Nazarene, Cavod, and Radio Shack. In addition, all entry information may be found at www.newhollandfair.org on the “Contests and Events” page.

Someone Who Understands BY ANN MEAD ASH
Growing up in Midland Park, N.J., Thomas Carr, who became the director of Revelations of Freedom Ministries
(ROFM) in June, rooted for the New York Mets. “I grew up watching (Darryl Strawberry) play,” recalled Carr, who booked the Hall of Famer as the keynote speaker for ROFM’s eighth annual banquet. Carr had several reasons for engaging Strawberry for the event, but chief among them was Strawberry’s personal experience with addiction, in spite of his success in baseball. Strawberry also went through abuse, divorce, and cancer, and he served time in jail. He has emerged a bornagain Christian with an understanding of those struggling with addiction. “He believes in the mission,” said Carr. ROFM, a faithbased, Christ-centered discipleship program for men who struggle with addictions, will hold the annual fundraiser at Shady Maple Banquet Center, 129 Toddy Drive, East
Earl, on Wednesday, Oct. 20. Doors will open for appetizers at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m. Table sponsorships for the event are available. Seating will be limited, and those wishing to attend should register by Monday, Oct. 4. There is no cost to attend the event. A freewill offering will be received. Strawberry is a former professional right fielder and an author. He played 17 seasons in the major leagues, where he was known as a slugger whose every at-bat held homerun potential. He helped lead the New York Mets to a World Series championship and the New York Yankees to three World Series championships. He was also suspended three times for substance abuse. His memoir, “Straw: Finding My Way,” was published in April 2009. Carr had a career in banking and banking technology prior to applying to ROFM. He and his wife moved to New Holland three years ago after visiting the Lancaster area for decades. “I came to New Holland for the purpose of going into full-time ministry,” said Carr. While continuing to work in the banking industry from home, Carr worked part time at

The Water Street Mission and Friendship Community. In May, he was taking part in a prayer meeting at Christian Fellowship Church, where he is a member. One of the ROFM board members asked that the group pray that the organization could find a new director. “I went home and thought, ‘Why not me? I want to go into ministry,’” Carr said. Carr, who will give an update on the ministry at the banquet, has made some changes since his arrival at ROFM, moving one employee to a marketing coordinator position and hiring a grant writer and donation coordinator, who will begin in October. As part of 4-H Fair Week, the Chester County 4-H Dairy Show was held on Aug. 13 at the Romano 4-H Center of Chester County in Honey Brook. Thirty dairy animals were exhibited, and 20 4-H youth members participated. This year the show was divided by dairy breeds, and judge Kyle Sollenberger of Pottstown was in charge of placing the animals and giving the 4-H members constructive feedback. The event started with the showmanship and fitting contests. Sollenberger worked the members and the animals to see how they held up under pressure. He had the experienced showmen switch animals to test their skills. In the Senior age group of 16 and older, Emma Williams of Glen Mills was top showman and Rosa Johnson of Elverson was top fitter. In the Senior 15-year-old division, Melissa Griswold of Chadds Ford was the top showman and Cameron Wallace of Exton was the top fitter. In the Junior age division
of 9- to 11-year-olds, Bella Smith of Downingtown was the top showman and Max Teran of West Chester was the top fitter. Rounding out the contests, in the First-Year Members Over 15 Years Old division Lucy Hahn of Kennett Square was top showman and Marieana Walker of Pottstown was the top fitter. Top honors went to Cameron Johnson of Elverson for best showman and Emma Dechert of Pottstown as best fitter in the First-Year Member 8 to 14 Years Old division. In the Ayrshire breed, Cochranville’s Katelyn Nolan had the Grand Champion and the Junior Champion with fall calf Dreamnol Reagan Braylyn, which was also named the best Ayrshire owned and bred by the member. The Reserve Junior Champion and Reserve Grand Champion Ayrshire, Dreamnol Reagan Gabrielle, a summer yearling, was owned and shown by Bella Smith. Katelyn’s Dreamnol Dreamer Brooklyn was Senior Champion and Bella’s Dreamnol Mak-
ers Mark Gemma was Reserve Senior Champion. In the Jersey breed, Tyler Parsons of Pocopson had the Senior Champion and Grand Champion with his dry cow PMF Tequila Paisley; she was also the best Jersey owned and bred by a member. Max Teran was Reserve Grand Champion and Junior Champion with his heifer PMF Matt Poinsettia and Marieana Walker was Reserve Junior Champion with her heifer Darr-Lynn Chrome Madame. In the Guernsey breed, Tyler Parsons was the Grand Champion with his 5-year-old cow Glen V DF Camille. In the Holstein breed, Sophie Griswold of Chadds Ford was the Grand Champion and Senior Champion and had the best bred and owned animal with her junior 2-year-old cow, Preble-Lane Jordy Ladybug. Cody Nolan of Cochranville was Reserve Champion and Reserve Senior Champion with his junior 2year-old cow, Kodiak-Creek Bixby PiJi. In the Holstein calf
entries, honors went to Melissa for her spring calf, Preble-Lane Cheers Ray that was Junior Champion and best junior animal owned and bred by the 4-H member. Wyatt Nolan of Oxford showed the Reserve Junior Champion, Lighthouse Moovin Heaven, a fall calf. In the Red and White show, honors went to Cameron Johnson. His winter calf, Robug Redlight Cranberry-Red, was Grand Champion and Junior Champion. Emma Williams was Reserve Champion and Reserve Junior Champion with her spring yearling, EGW-Mill Rager Fancy-Red. Her dry cow, Ary-Back Drivn Felicity-Red, was Senior Champion. In the Lineback breed, Ellie Harrop of Exton was the Grand Champion with her winter calf, Hidden-Brook Sptrn Lark-RC. Evangeline Teran of West Chester was Reserve Champion with her spring calf, Pocopson Meadow Hill Lavender. The judge selected Katelyn’s Ayrshire Dreamnol Reagan Braylyn as the Supreme Champion.

Litter Cleanup Campaign Posted To prevent litter from ending up in Pennsylvania’s waterways, Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful will host Pick Up Pennsylvania, where state residents may participate in the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup. This annual event provides an opportunity to improve neighborhoods and Pennsylvania’s waterways by coordinating or participating in a litter cleanup. This year’s program will run from Wednesday, Sept. 1, through Tuesday, Nov. 30. During this period, Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, PennDOT, and the Ocean Conservancy will provide free trash bags,
gloves, and safety vests for registered events, while supplies last. In addition to waterway cleanups, landbased cleanups will also be eligible since a significant portion of waterway pollution originates on land. Individuals, families, neighbors, students, civic organizations, and local governments are all invited to participate. Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful suggests following all applicable COVID-19 federal, state, and local health and safety rules in effect at the time of the event. According to Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, in 2020 nearly 12,000 volunteers canvassed their communities to
remove 777,650 pounds of trash and 122,600 pounds of tires from Pennsylvania’s lands, waterways, and coastal regions from September through November. The Ocean Conservancy’s annual International Coastal Cleanup engages hundreds of thousands of volunteers from around the world to remove millions of pounds of plastics and debris from beaches, lakes, and waterways. To register a cleanup event, visit www.keeppabeautiful .org/programs/pick-up-pa. Questions can be answered by Michelle Dunn, Pick Up Pennsylvania program coordinator, at 877-772-3673, ext. 113, or mdunn@keeppabeautiful.org.

opportunity in southeastern Pennsylvania. The development of a largescale renewable energy partnership could take several years to complete. The memorandum of understanding signed by the commissioners is designed to start the process of collaborative planning. It does not commit Chester County or its partners to go beyond this first step, but the initial study could clear the way to move forward. The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission will serve as facilitator and convener of the power agreement partnership. Chester County was recently included in the list of appropriations secured by Rep. Chrissy Houlahan for funds to install 26 electric vehicle charging stations at 19 county property locations, such as trailheads, parks, and county buildings. The stations would be funded by a $645,000 federal grant. Chester County also has an award-winning open space preservation program that has preserved more than 143,000 acres of land protected as farms, forests, public parks, and nature preserves. Earlier this year, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency confirmed Chester County as a Green Power Partner, noting that it purchases enough green power annually to meet all of the county’s own electricity use.

The Chester County commissioners recently signed a memorandum of understanding to participate in the Southeastern Pennsylvania Regional Power Agreement Partnership. The partnership is considering the creation of a renweable energy facility that could produce sufficient electricity for Chester, Bucks, Delaware, and Montgomery counties. Within the partnership, the commissioners are exploring the feasibility of a regional power purchasing agreement. The memorandum of understanding, approved at the commissioners’ most recent public meeting, calls for hiring a consultant to look at all the options. The partnership will consider the benefits, implications, and economies of scale involved in combining the electric needs of multiple counties, municipalities, and other institutions and authorities, as well as the potential to pursue development of a large-scale renewable energy facility, to be operated by an outside company or entity. Creating a larger renewable electricity demand could incentivize an energy developer to build a facility to feed electricity into the power grid, reducing Chester County’s and other partnership members’ energy costs. Another potential benefit of the partnership could be the creation of green jobs and economic

Parents Advised Of Vision Disorder Signs Prevent Blindness has offered information to help parents recognize if their children may have a vision disorder. Without early detection and treatment, uncorrected vision disorders can interfere with learning and impair children’s development. Parents and educators are urged to be aware of symptoms of common eye disorders in children, which include rubbing the eyes often, closing or covering one eye to read or to see, titling the head or thrusting it forward, having difficulty reading or doing other close work, or holding objects close to the eyes to see them more clearly. Other indicators include blinking, squinting, or frowing often or complaining that things are blurry. All children, especially those who are having issues with their eyes, should visit an eye professional annually to have their vision checked. In addition, Prevent Blindness and Children’s Vision Massachusetts and School Health have created a new web resource to help parents assess their children’s digital screen time use; tips are available at https:// preventblindness.org /childrens-screen-time-tips/.
