While apple dishes like pies, dumplings and fritters will be the stars of the annual Hay Creek Apple Festival, the event will also feature other attractions, including a craft and flea market, children’s activities and tours of the site’s historic buildings.
The Hay Creek Valley Historical Association (HCVHA) will present the Apple Festival on Saturday, Oct. 7, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 8, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Historic Joanna Furnace, 1250 Furnace Road, Geigertown.
According to Mark Zerr, HCVHA executive director, the Apple Festival has been a fall tradition in Berks County for 45 years. “Our Apple Festival is an all-time classic. It’s a great, family-fun event,” he said. “Families can come and enjoy the nice fall weather; take in some of
our family-friendly activities, like hayrides, pumpkin painting and scarecrow making; enjoy our apple foods; and shop in our flea market.” He added that children will also be able to enjoy rides on the Apple Barrel Express.
Each day will begin with an apple pancake breakfast, which will be served from 7 to 11 a.m. in the historic Joanna Furnace Mule Stable. Also available throughout the weekend will be apple crisp, homemade caramel apples with various toppings, hot mulled cider and freshly pressed cider. “People love watching our cider being pressed,” said Zerr. “October is a much better time to purchase apple cider because the apples are sweeter.”
Also featured will be Mabel’s Iron-Kettle Soups, cooked over actual open fires. Susan and Leonard McMullen of Morgantown will
oversee the soup-making in honor of Susan’s mother, Mabel, who started making the soup 45 years ago. Other Apple Festival foods will include chicken potpie, pulled pork sandwiches, baked peppers filled with hamburger and rice, macaroni and cheese, hamburgers, hot dogs, french fries and sausage sandwiches. A limited number of corn pies will be sold on-site. “(To make the corn pie), we cut the corn off the cob and (mix it) with potatoes, bacon, seasonings, a little milk and hardboiled egg, and it’s made in a crust,” Zerr explained. “We bake it and serve it hot.”
After a three-year absence, the apple dessert contest will return on Oct. 7. Participants should bring their entries, including pies, cakes, breads and muffins and desserts, to the Festival Food Court area between 8 and 9 a.m. Judging will take place at 10 a.m. Winners in

education, will be held at the Great Marsh Institute (GMI) in Elverson on Saturday, Oct. 14, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Founded by GMI administrative assistant and dance artist, Mijkalena Smith, this year’s event will be free to the public for the first time. “In the past, it has been marketed as a fundraising event. We decided to have it be an arts event for the community,” said Smith. “We (wanted) it be more accessible to a wider audience.”
Live demonstrations during the day will include performances by the local dance studio ReMix Dance Collective; a beginner Pilates class with Movement Designed to Feel Good; and a beginner swing dancing lesson with dancers and live music accompaniment.

The 10th annual Cars for Kacie car show will take place on Saturday, Oct. 7, at the Classic Auto Mall, 6180 Morgantown Road, Morgantown. In addition to the displays of vehicles and motorcycles, the event will include food, a silent auction, children’s activities and demonstrations by local police and first responders.
Cars for Kacie benefits Kacie’s Cause, a nonprofit organization that provides support to parents, family members and friends of
those battling addiction. The local chapter of Kacie’s Cause offers a support group that meets on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. at Parkesburg Baptist Church, 103 West St., Parkesburg. Kacie’s Cause also awards recovery scholarships.
Cars for Kacie was started 10 years ago by Andy Rumford, who lost his daughter Kacie Erin Rumford at the age of 23 from a drug overdose on March 12, 2013. The show is also designed to be a source for recovery information as many recovery groups will be on hand. Kacie’s Cause will provide naloxone training.

Members of GMI’s Science Advisory Board will offer educational talks on the flora and fauna of the Great Marsh. Among the speakers will be nature writer Bernard Brown, who specializes in the study of reptiles and amphibians.
All activities will take place on an outdoor stage under a pavilion. “People can bring chairs for seating. We will have some hay bales set up just in case,” said Smith.
All attendees will receive a program with the events schedule, as well information about the speakers and performers.
Also on hand will be vendors from the local community, including Barking Tree Pottery, HilaryJanePics, Exton Bee Company and Davis Witmer Visual Arts.
The Great Marsh, covering about 700 acres, is situated on private property, which is protected by conservation and agricultural easements. However, events such Arts at the Great Marsh are open to the community. Also offered are monthly bird walks.
“We also have monthly Artist Days where the property is open from dawn to dusk. Artists are welcome to take photos and paint. We have a lot
of talented people that come out,” Smith noted. “We have had some people shoot music videos on the property, (and) they always share the final products with us.”
The location also provides a unique habitat for college students, scientists and others to study the Great Marsh’s plant and animal species. According to www.greatmarshinstitute.org, more than 150 bird species and 160 plant species have been identified on the property. The site also is home to whitetail deer, coyotes, red and silver foxes, muskrats and beavers as well as many species of amphibians and reptiles.
“The Moore family owns the property and started the nonprofit in 2018 to formalize the research that was already going on by researchers and college groups that came onto the property,” Smith said. “Our mission is to support scientific studies and educational opportunities and to protect the marsh.”
GMI is located at 34 Moores Road, Elverson. For more information, visit the aforementioned website or www .facebook.com/greatmarshinstitute.
The classic car show is open to any car, truck and motorcycle of any year, make or model, including customs, classics, street rods, low riders, antiques, new generation and tuners. A registration fee will be charged to vehicle owners. Registration will be from 8 to 10 a.m., followed by judging from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The awards ceremony will begin at 1:30 p.m. Vehicle owners must be present to win.
“Last year, we had 400 (vehicles), and this year we (are expecting) 450 to 500,” said car show organizer Johnny Pappas.
One hundred 42-inch trophies will be awarded, as well as 17 specialty trophies measuring 7 feet tall. Categories will include Best Engine, Best Paint, Best Interior and Best Club participation. Also awarded will be Best of Show, the Kacie Erin Rumford Memorial trophy and the Jeff DiVito Memorial trophy, named for a longtime member of the Chester County Sheriff’s Office who died in March 2021 after battling cancer.
“The top 100 will receive trophies. They are over 3-and-a-half-feet tall, so they are big trophies,” Pappas said, noting that the award winners
will be chosen by families who have lost loved ones to addiction.
There will be a variety of food and dessert vendors, including Mexi-Boys, BBQ Dave, Abbi’s Sweet Treats and Kona Ice. Additionally, 50 vendors will offer handmade products and services.
For children, there will be a bounce house and an appearance by Spider Man and the 9-foot-tall Transformer Bumble Bee.
There will be a silent auction featuring hundreds of items such as toys, painted pumpkins, gift baskets and gift cards, including one that offers dinner for two at the Windmill Family Restaurant.
Members of the Caernarvon Police Department will conduct K-9 demonstrations utilizing three department dogs. In addition, members of the Twin Valley Fire Department have an ambulance and hook and ladder truck on display, and they will provide demonstrations.
The rain date for the car show is Saturday, Oct. 28. For more information, visit www.kaciescause.org /cars-for-kacie or search for the Facebook event page, “Cars for Kacie Car Show.”

Automobiles have come a long way since their introduction more than 100 years ago. The cars of today are technological marvels, which has made both driving and maintaining a vehicle simpler in certain ways. For example, built-in diagnostic systems can now alert drivers when something is wrong with their car. Although that feature is undeniably useful, drivers can still benefit from learning to recognize issues by ear. Many problems that can affect a car
or truck produce unusual sounds, and learning what certain noises may indicate can help drivers detect problems as soon as possible.
- Rattling sound in a wheel well: Many people have mistakenly placed clothing in a dryer without realizing the clothing had spare change in the pockets. That mistake is immediately apparent once the dryer starts thanks to the unpleasant noise of coins bouncing off the interior of the machine. Drivers may
Drivers play a vital role in vehicle maintenance. Although diagnosing and fixing car problems is often best left to professionals, drivers who learn to recognize warning signs of various problems can prevent breakdowns and potentially costly repairs. Problems with the brake system are among the issues that drivers may learn to recognize.
Television shows and movies have lent credence to the notion that brake problems are marked by the sudden loss of a vehicle’s ability to stop. Although that can happen, warning signs of fading brake systems tend to be more subtle.
Certain noises are one of the signs that brakes may be failing. The most noticeable of these signs is a highpitched squeal that occurs when drivers apply the brakes. Grinding sounds and noises like scratching and scraping also warrant a visit to a brake specialist.
Drivers may also notice an increase in the distance a vehicle travels before it stops after the brakes are applied. This issue may or may not require a brake replacement. In fact, it sometimes indicates that brake fluid levels are low, which can be remedied quickly and easily. However, an increase in stopping distance is significant enough that it should be brought to the attention of a brake specialist immediately.
Another warning sign of brake problems is that the vehicle noticeably pulls to one side as it comes to a stop. This behavior indicates that one side of the brakes is malfunctioning while the other is working properly. Like other issues with brakes, this one requires immediate attention from a professional.
Issues with brakes can be costly and dangerous, so it is important that drivers learn to recognize the warning signs of brake problems.
hear a similar sound when behind one of their car’s wheels and wonder what’s behind it. Such a sound often indicates that there’s a loose lug nut inside the hubcap. This issue can arise when drivers don’t secure the wheel tightly after changing their own tire or if mechanics make the same mistake when rotating or replacing tires during a routine maintenance session.
- Squeaking sound: The auto insurance experts at Geico note that rear-wheel or four-wheel drive vehicles may produce a rhythmic squeaking sound when an issue arises with the universal joint. JD Power notes that the universal joint, often referred to as a U-joint, is part of the system that enables the rotating crankshaft in the engine of a vehicle to transfer that rotating motion to the rear wheels. U-joints get a workout whenever vehicles are driven, so they require maintenance, and a squeaking sound is one indicator that the U-joint needs to be addressed immediately.
- Squealing sound: A highpitched squealing sound typically
means the vehicle’s brake pads are worn out. However, Cars.com notes that if such a sound is only present when a car is first driven in the morning, it could just be surface rust being scraped off the rotors. After a few initial applications of the brakes, the sound might disappear. If it doesn’t, the vehicle will likely need new brake pads.
- Scraping on the windshield during rain: The scraping sound on a windshield when the wipers are in use should not be taken lightly or be interpreted as a sign that the rain is only falling lightly. In fact, that sound indicates the wipers are worn out, which means they’re not effectively clearing the windshield. In addition, the wipers could be scratching the windshield each time they produce this sound, ultimately necessitating a costly windshield replacement. Wiper blades can be replaced in a matter of minutes, so address this issue promptly.
Learning to recognize the sources of various vehicle noises can help drivers nip problems in the bud before they compromise the automobile and the safety of the people inside it.
In today’s world, saving money is often a top priority for consumers, and bills paid at the gas pump are no exception. Drivers can follow a few simple tips to help save money on gas.
Lighten the load. How much weight is being carted around in a vehicle can directly affect the amount of gas it consumes. Remove any unnecessary items from the trunk or cargo area of a truck or SUV. Consider removing extra accessories, like roof racks or hitches.
Accelerate slowly. Resist the urge to gun it when beginning to move after a stop light or stop sign, as rapid acceleration wastes gas. Press the accelerator pedal gently to increase speed gradually and conserve fuel. Similarly, coast to a stop, rather than slamming on the brakes.
Don’t idle. Turn off the engine if the car will be idling for more than a minute. Modern engines do not need to be warmed up for more than 30 to 60 seconds, even when the weather is cold. Driving will warm up the car faster than idling while parked, provided the car is driven moderately until the temperature gauge shows the car has reached the right temperature.
Consider whether to use air conditioning or put the windows down. While it’s true that the air conditioning will drain fuel when in use, driving with the windows open makes the vehicle less aerodynamic by causing drag. Some experts recommended leaving the windows down during slower city driving and using the air conditioning for higher speeds on the highway.
Keep tires properly inflated. Poorly inflated tires can make a vehicle less efficient by causing more friction between tires and the roadway. Check the PSI rating for the tires and inflate accordingly. Many modern vehicles automatically alert drivers when tires are low on air.
Drive a consistent speed. When driving on the highway, switch to cruise control to maintain a consistent speed. This action can reduce drag, which in turn reduces fuel consumption.
Stick to a maintenance schedule. Maintaining a vehicle by getting routine oil changes, fluid checks and other simple upkeep helps a car or truck run properly, which can help conserve fuel.
These are just a few strategies drivers may employ to conserve fuel.

The community is invited to celebrate Leif Ericson Day by witnessing the sailing of the Norseman, a 40-foot Viking ship replica, on Marsh Creek Lake on Sunday, Oct. 8, by members of Leif Ericson Viking Ship Inc. (LEVS).
LEVS membership chairman
Hildegard Lindstrom explained that in 1964, the U.S. Congress, by joint resolution, declared Oct. 9 as Leif Ericson Day; the sail is always held on or near that date.
The launching of the ship will take place at 11 a.m. by costumed Viking re-enactors from the western launch area of Marsh Creek Lake. The GPS address for the location is 800 N. Reeds Road, Downingtown. Visitors will be invited to take a closer look at the Norseman in the water and talk with the crew.
At noon, there will be introductions of honored guests, as well as
the reading of a proclamation from the president of the United States and the singing of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” At the conclusion of the ceremony, a wreath will be dedicated in honor of the life and accomplishments of Leif Ericson.
