Community Dinners
At St. Peter
BY FRANCINE FULTONAfter a two-year absence because of the pandemic, community dinners are again being served at St. Peter United Church of Christ (UCC), located on Route 23 in Knauertown.
Community dinners are typically held on the last Friday of each month from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The meal is free, but a collection jar is available on the table where the coffee and desserts are served so that people can donate a freewill offering.

Christian School (CCS) will hold its 49th annual chicken barbecue and auction on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 14 and 15. All proceeds will benefit the school, which offers classes for students in preschool through 12th grade.
The event will begin with the barbecue dinner on Oct. 14, which will be takeout only. Dinners will be available to purchase at the door until sold out. Dinners may be picked up in the school’s front parking lot from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Also on Oct. 14, a gift certificate store will be open outside the school, and there will be homemade apple dumplings available for purchase.
A live auction will be held on Oct. 15 from 9 a.m. until the last item is
sold. The auction will feature a selection of favorite items, experiences, artwork and quilts, as well as jellies and jams and homemade yogurt donated each year by CCS families.
“Donations have been coming in strong,” said Michelle Parris, CCS admissions director. “We have a Discovery Flight from Chester County Aviation, a fine dining experience with one of our school families and couple of destinations that were donated. One is at a Tennessee lake house and another is at a beach house in Ocean City, N.J.”
In addition, each class at the school has designed a themed basket for the auction. Basket themes this year will include Date Night, Summer Fun, No Pressure Dinner, Home Decor, Hunting, Local Blessings,
Grilling, Camping, the Pampered Pup, Helping Hands and Something for the Graduate. Bidding on class baskets will start at 9:30 a.m.
CCS students in the art and ceramics independent study classes led by teacher Eirené Groff have also created items that will be up for bids, including paintings and a quilt. Groff will place her own oil painting in the auction as well.
“Right after the class baskets are auctioned, we will give the bidders an opportunity to raise their paddles to make a donation toward our special project,” said Parris. “In the past it’s been a new copier, a bus and picnic tables. This year, our special project is our capital campaign. With the amount of growth in our enrollment, we would like to build additional classrooms.”
BY FRANCINE FULTONHistoric Poole Forge will present Cruise to the Forge, the site’s annual car, truck and bike show, on Sunday, Oct. 16, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. In addition to the display of vehicles of all makes and models, the event will include food, music and a silent auction. The site’s mansion will also be open for tours.
A Big Show In A Small Space
BY ANN MEAD ASHJordan Scott Gilbert, director of the Cavod Theatre production of “A Tale of Two Cities,” thinks that staging the musical in the small theater will only enhance the telling. “It’s a big show that we are trying to make intimate in this small space, which is great for storytelling,” said Gilbert, who was the assistant producer of the show on Broadway. chose “A Tale of Two Cities” along with Cavod artistic director Monica DePaul and Connie Dienner, director of Cavod Performing Arts.
“A Tale of Two Cities” will be presented at the Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland, with a special opening night themed dinner theater at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 14. Cocktail attire is requested for this red carpet event. The show will also be performed at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, Oct. 15 and 22; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, Oct. 16 and 23.
“A Tale of Two Cities” with book, music, and lyrics by Jill Santoriello is based on Charles Dickens’ 1859 novel that tells the tale of a love triangle. The story focuses on the beautiful Lucie Manette, played by Jackie Zliczewski; French aristocrat Charles Darnay, played by Alexander Weaver; and English cynic Sydney Carton, played by Bryant Martin. Walter Winston O’Neill, who took part in the Broadway production, will
play Dr. Manette. Alicia Burton will play Miss Pross, and Hannah Rau will portray Madame Defarge. Set during the French Revolution, the story encompasses love and redemption in a way that parallels Cavod’s mission. The show is choreographed by Stephanie Brooks Martin, with musical direction by Amy Rau. Glen Brodersen of Sight & Sound Theatre is handling the set.
Calling the show “vocally challenging,” Gilbert relayed that the cast is doing a “really awesome job.” “There are some cast members who are perfect for their roles,” he noted of the cast of nearly 30. “My point of view with the storyline is God working in people, specifically the lead character (of Sydney Carton) to bring him to a place of faith,” continued Gilbert. “I think it will be very moving and show the audience the depths people will go to save those that they love.”
Dienner said that the show is

The American Helicopter Museum and Education Center (AHMEC), 1220 American Blvd., West Chester, will present “Star Trek Screen-Used Props and Costumes” through Sunday, Nov. 27. This collection of about 40 screen-used and production-made artifacts spans decades and includes costumes, weapons, communicators and pieces of the starship Enterprise. Among the items are a costume worn by Jonathan Frakes in “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” a gold operations uniform from “Star Trek: Voyager” and a phaser rifle from “Star Trek: Nemesis,” noted Paul Kahan, AHMEC’s executive director.
An accompanying Speaker’s Series will be offered on select

RISH SETTER WATERPROOF, INSULATED BOOTSIRISH SETTER WATERPROOF, INSULATED BOOTS
Community Dinners
The community meal began with a “soft opening” in August and returned to a fullscale dinner on Sept. 30, when 35 people attended. The menu included ziti pasta with a choice of Bolognese; sausage, peppers and onions; squash, carrots and onions; or a fall squash blend. Diners also enjoyed Italian bread and assorted desserts.
The food is prepared by church member Paul Baringer, who is not a professional chef but describes himself as a “foodie” who loves to eat and prepare food. Church volunteers help prepare, serve and clean up after the meal.
“Our last meal was in February of 2020. We were prepared for the (dinner) in March, but then the state shut everything down,” Baringer recalled.
“Because we are just getting back into it, we are trying to offer a lot of different things so that people have a variety to choose from.”
Community dinners began at St. Peter UCC in October of 2013. The idea was to offer a free meal to those with financial difficulties. Today, community members of all ages and backgrounds are welcome to attend the dinners, where they can enjoy good food and fellowship with others. “It’s a wide range of people, but (mostly) older folks. We had one family that used to come
religiously,” Baringer stated.
Because the church is still cognizant of the pandemic, the tables are spaced apart during the dinner, and the meal is no longer served buffet-style. “People sit at the tables, and we come and take their orders, and we bring their entrée to them. They can get their coffee and dessert at their leisure,” Baringer explained. “(This way), people are not standing in line and congregating. They are sitting down with the people they came with.” He noted that the buffet-style dinner may return in subsequent months.
In addition to the community meal, the church offers an indoor/outdoor flea market on the second Saturday of every month from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. “Our congregation started back with the flea markets earlier this year,” Baringer noted.
The next community dinner will be held on Friday, Oct. 28. Because of the Thanksgiving holiday, November’s meal will be held on Friday, Nov. 18, when a complete Thanksgiving dinner will be served.
For more information about the church, call the church office at 610-469-9690 or visit www.stpeterucc.org or www .facebook.com/stpeterunited church. For GPS users, the church’s address is 1920 Ridge Road, Pottstown.
Discover Our Heritage
BY ANN MEAD ASHAccording to Wanda Swarr, founder of Pathways school, Heritage Day began as a way for students to demonstrate what they had learned. The school invited a few re-enactors and demonstrators to join in the encampment.
“That (first) year, we had a couple hundred people here, but it has just exploded and it’s so much fun,” recalled Swarr.
This year’s fourth Heritage Day will be held at the school’s Brubaker Homestead campus, 414 Long Lane, East Earl, on Saturday, Oct. 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is no charge for admission or
Jay’s Handyman Service
parking. “We have a lot of demonstrators and interactive events,” noted Swarr.
Swarr pointed out that students and demonstrators will be dressed in Colonial garb or in pre-1840s costumes. Encampments will include a furtraders encampment and a pre-1840s encampment. A Civil War re-enactors group will also be on-site. “We are trying to interpret history in
southeastern Pennsylvania through the years,” explained Swarr, who noted that a Native American interpretive area was student-developed. “They said ‘We know (Native Americans) were here. Why aren’t we interpreting Native American history and not just European settlers?’” reported Swarr.
Activities for people of all ages are planned, including
Church Sets Yard, Craft Sale
The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 107 S. 17th St., Coatesville, will hold an indoor yard and craft sale on Saturday, Oct. 15, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will be held in the church’s fellowship hall. The public is welcome to attend and shop.
Spots will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Those who are interested in
reserving a spot may contact the church at adminsupport@luthgoodshep.org or call 610-384-2035. Proceeds from the spot reservations will be donated to Good Shepherd’s Blessings Box food ministry.
In addition, the church’s monthly pancake breakfast will be held that day from 8 to 10 a.m.
Colonial games, along with a scheduled tug-of-war and sack races. Swarr pointed out that visitors can try candle dipping, paper making, stirring a big pot of soup, or shooting a traditional longbow on the archery range. “We have tomahawk throwing,” she said. “We had it before it became the ‘in’ thing.”
One interactive competition is a Woods Walk, which is a contest for adults and teens.
Groups of four walk through the woods visiting five stations, where each participant earns points to determine how well they could each could survive on the frontier.
“Above a certain number of points is a mountain man,” said Swar, who noted other designations include flat-landers and 6 feet under. Last year’s winner of the contest received a lantern handmade by one of the students.
“We have Colonial skills through the early 1900s,” said Swarr, who noted that wagon and tractor rides and story
trails will be part of the event. Story trails will involve pages on posts to read on a walk. Last year, one story trail had a Native American theme, and the other was an environmental walk around the pond. She also hopes to have storytellers and musicians on-site.
Food items that will be available for purchase will include soups, chili, hot dogs, and sub sandwiches, along with baked goods and ice cream made with hit-andmiss engines.
In conjunction with Heritage Day, a handmade, flintknapped knife, which was made by a Native American interpreter specifically for Pathways to use as a fundraiser will be auctioned online. Readers may visit www.learningatpathways.org for more information.
“In the past, visitors have said it feels like a real community,” recalled Swarr. “It’s a very family-friendly (event) because we have activities for all ages.”

Student Named Finalist In STEM Competition
Kai Unwin-Wisnosky, an eighth-grader from West Chester, is one of 30 finalists in the Broadcom MASTERS (Math, Applied Science, Technology and Engineering for Rising Stars), a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) competition for middle-schoolers.
Kai’s project is “Are Four Scaled-Down Savonius Vertical-Axis Wind Turbines More Efficient Than a Single-Scaled Wind Turbine of the Same Type?” Kai noted that he thinks his work could help to provide clean energy for some residential communities that don’t allow large turbines, as
well as coastal areas that may need backup power after storms.
Offered by the Broadcom Foundation and Society for Science, Broadcom MASTERS seeks to inspire young scientists, engineers and innovators who will work toward solving the grand challenges of the future. The finalists, who were selected from a pool of 1,807 sixth- through eighthgrade applicants participating in affiliated science fairs, will each receive a cash award and will participate in Finals Week in Washington, D.C. At this competition, they will be judged on their research projects as well as their demonstration of collaboration and critical thinking skills during team challenges, emphasizing the importance and value of teamwork in STEM fields. They will vie for more than $100,000 in awards. Broadcom MASTERS also recognizes finalists’ science teachers with a one-year classroom subscription to Science News magazine and awards the finalists’ schools with cash prizes to use toward STEM activities.
Memorial Closes For Renovations
The Pennsylvania Veterans’ Memorial, located at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville, is temporarily closed to the public for structural repairs. The memorial, which was dedicated in 2001, is known as the largest veterans’ memorial located in any of the national cemeteries. It honors those who died in military service since World War II. Renovations are expected to take until June 2023.
The memorial is made of concrete, granite, and stone. Its structure is generally in good condition but requires repairs and alterations to address areas of damage due
to long-term exposure to the elements.
Funded by the state as a public improvement project, the renovations will cost $3.6 million. Specific repairs will include re-anchoring plaques, resetting existing pre-cast concrete, waterproofing walls, replacing flashing and upgrading drainage.
Community members may pay tribute to veterans while also helping to preserve the memorial by donating to the Pennsylvania Veterans’ Memorial Trust Fund. Taxdeductible donations to the fund can be made at www.donate.dmva.pa.gov; information on donating by
mail is also available on this site. Donations can be made in honor of, in memory of or on behalf of another person.
One hundred percent of donations go toward the ongoing upkeep of the memorial, such as landscaping, lighting, and fountains as well as needed maintenance for structural and cosmetic components throughout the memorial.
