Thecommunity is invited to celebrate fall during Heritage Day at the Daniel Boone Homestead on Sunday, Oct. 23, from noon to 4 p.m. The living history event will feature demonstrations of 18th-century trades such as

blacksmithing, gunbuilding, leatherworking and hearth cooking, as well as a limited number of craft and specialty food vendors and children’s activities.

The site’s Bertolet Sawmill will also run at select times throughout the afternoon. Specific hours will be posted.

“The sawmill is popular because it only operates during special events and it’s a very unique thing to see,” said Amanda Machik, coordinator of site events and programs for the Daniel Boone Homestead Associates (DBHA). “There are only two or three vertical blade operating sawmills in the United States.” The water-powered sawmill was moved to the homestead in 1972 from its original location in the Oley Valley.

In the Boone House, volunteer re-enactors will cook a hearty meal, including seasonal vegetables, over the hearth. The Boone House will also be open for tours. Visitors will be able to see all of the first-floor rooms of the home, including the spring cellar, and learn about the three families that lived there during the 18th and early 19th centuries.

“We will have a quill pen writing activity for kids and Colonial toys and games as well,” Machik added.

Halloween,

With the arrival of autumn, local groups have planned Halloween and fall-themed events. Community members are also reminded to get outdoors to enjoy the fall foliage.

The annual Elverson Halloween parade will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 19, beginning at 7 p.m. along Route 23 in the borough. This year’s theme is “Back to the ‘90s.” The rain date is Thursday, Oct. 20. For complete details, visit www.elversonboro.org.

The Birdsboro Rotary Halloween Parade will take place on Oct. 20. Registration will be from 5 to 6 p.m. at Daniel Boone Area High School, 501 Chestnut St., Birdsboro. Judging will take place at 6 p.m., with the award ceremony to follow at 6:30 p.m. The parade will start at 7 p.m. For more details, including the parade route, visit www.facebook.com/Birdsboro HalloweenParade.

Al Stoltzfus, one of the organizers of the Weaverland Anabaptist Faith Community trick-or-treat alternative, knows all the details about the event, but the one he is most sure of is that there will be plenty of candy. “There are prizes and lots of candy,” said Stoltzfus, who repeated the phrase “lots of candy” a few times during the interview.

Study

Assessments such as quizzes and exams help educators recognize areas where students are excelling and where they might need extra help. In addition to regular tests on their classroom lessons, many students take standardized tests for state assessment purposes.

Testing may come easier to some students than others, but having good study techniques can improve students’ performance on a wide range of exams. The testing preparation resource PrepScholar says it is important to build and maintain strong study habits to help students avoid undue stress and last-minute cramming. The following seven techniques may help foster good study skills.

First, students can try to find value in the lessons. Students might believe that what they learn in school is irrelevant in daily life, which can make the subject matter feel less important and uninteresting. Finding value in what one is learning and seeing how it can be applied outside the classroom may make a student more inclined to learn and retain the information.

Second, it is important to avoid distractions. Study time should be free of social media, video games, and any other distractions that can pull a student away from studying. Constantly checking notifications can interrupt thoughts and make it hard to learn the material.

Third, students should establish a system and a schedule for studying. Students should establish a routine of studying each day or at intervals throughout the week.

Fourth, it is important to establish dedicated study spots. Students should locate places that work best for them as study and homework stations. Certain individuals may need the quiet of a library or a bookstore while others may do best with the hum of conversation around them or as part of a study group. There is no right or wrong study spot. Maintaining consistency will help the mind to associate a place with studying.

Fifth, students can use grades as benchmarks and motivators. Grades can indicate

how well one is learning the material and, in turn, the effectiveness of the student’s studying habits. Students can modify their habits if they find they are not reaching their acadmic goals.

Sixth, students can rephrase the material. If students find textbook language dry and unappealing, they can try putting the material into their own words or rephrasing passages to make them easier to remember. Sharing the material with another person also may improve retention.

Lastly, making a formula sheet can improve study habits. Depending on the subject, students can create a sheet with shortcuts, formulas, or diagrams, thereby arranging the material in smaller groups of information that are easier to digest. Along the same line, writing information down can help improve recall.

By following these study tips, students may increase their potential for academic success.

This year’s Fall Celebration will be held at the church, 210 Weaverland Valley Road, East Earl, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 31. The event will include a variety of activities for young children, middle-schoolers, and teenagers, as well as adults both inside and outside the church.

Children’s games and activities that will be available inside the church will include cornhole, a football toss game, a duck pond, a golf putt

game, and a lollipop toss, along with face painting.

Outside the church, bounce houses will be set up. Other outdoor activities will include a hayride and a corn dig. Three campfires will be burning, and music will be played.

Free food available outside will include hot dogs, french fries, soft pretzels, chocolate chip cookies, popcorn, ice cream, candy, snack items, and hot and cold beverages. Stoltzfus noted that the Aun-

tie Anne’s soft pretzels are one of the most popular items among those served each year.

Organizers have again partnered with the Northeastern Lancaster County Food Bank to help stock the bank’s shelves. Stoltzfus explained that attendees may bring a canned good to drop off at the registration table, which will open at 6 p.m. He noted that the bank has specifically asked for cans of soup. “The food bank is always in need of

soup and even more so over the winter months,” he explained.

Although a small committee works to put the event together, about 150 volunteers are needed to coordinate the trick-or-treat alternative on the night it occurs. Past events have attracted 800 or more visitors, but Stoltzfus said that organizers are planning for 1,200 people to attend the 2022 Fall Celebration. “We’ve had a terrific

Acclimating Cats To A New Home

Cats have a special place in the hearts of millions of people. The personalities of cats, coupled with their compact size, can make them suitable pets for a variety of homes.

Individuals who adopt cats may want to take every step they can to help the cat feel comfortable in its new home. The length of time it will take for the cat to adjust to a new environment depends on the cat’s temperament, but the following tips can help.

If the cat has a favorite toy, carrier, or scratching post, the new owner should bring the familiar item along. Moving something into the home that has the animal’s smell may help it to adjust more quickly.

by the cat.

It is important to avoid lots of commotion in the household. A cat’s early days in a new home are not the time for the owners to host a house party. Stressors like large crowds, increased foot traffic, and kids’ play dates should be removed. Loud sounds and sudden movements can put cats on edge.

As the cat is invited into other areas of the home, people should let the cat set the pace and resist the urge to pull the pet out from a hiding place under a bed or couch. The cat will start to venture out when it is ready.

new home, owners should continue to provide it with a quiet area. According to cat behaviorist Jackson Galaxy, cats need solitude and quiet time. A box or basket lined with soft, washable bedding in a corner can serve as a place for a cat to retire to.

Cats are happiest when they have had time to get used to their new home. Once an adoption takes place, owners may follow the aforementioned tips to help the cat become comfortable in its new environment.

Jay’s Handyman Service

Bonded sisters Cinnamon (top photo) and Ginger (bottom photo) are available for adoption from Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue. They are 6 months old and looking for a home together. They are beautiful and sweet girls who are fully vetted. Shy at first, they warm up quickly. Visit www.lucky dawganimalrescue.com for an adoption application.

One room should be selected as a home base. Introducing the cat to the entire home and all its residents at the same time can be overwhelming. Rather, a small room in the home, such as an office or laundry space, should be designated as the cat’s initial residence. With the door closed, this small space can be comforting and let the cat learn the smells and sounds of the home before it ventures into other areas. Owners should remember to visit often and provide plenty of love and affection as tolerated

Children should initially be kept away from the cat. Young children tend to be energetic and jerky, which is not a good mix with a skittish cat. The cat should be introduced to children in short sessions with careful supervision so the cat does not get hurt and children are not scratched or bitten if the cat becomes scared.

Likewise, existing pets should be introduced gradually. A dog should be kept confined until the cat feels secure in the home. Two altered cats can become friends in the same home, but older cats often are more accepting of kittens than other adults.

As the cat adjusts to its

The homestead is owned by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, and it is run by the DBHA. According to Machik, the organization that previously supported the homestead ended its role at the historic site in 2019.

In 2020, the new organization - DBHA - was formed and an ad hoc board was brought together. “Some of the new board was made up of people

with longstanding relationships with the site; others were newly engaged people from the community,” said Machik. “The Associates are a nonprofit and are responsible for everyday visitor operations.”

Program To Target Cigarette Litter

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful is partnering with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) to implement the Cigarette Litter Prevention Program (CLPP) at 14 state welcome centers. A grant of $20,000 for the program was awarded to Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful from the national organization Keep America Beautiful.

The CLPP program began with a scan or physical count of cigarette butts and other tobacco products at each participating visitor center. Ash receptacles will be installed at each of the building’s points of entry. Two other scans will be performed, one midway through the year and a final count at the end of the program.

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful has a partnership with Ter-

raCycle to expand the program to include recycling and composting of the cigarette butt waste. Cigarettes collected through CLPP are shipped to TerraCycle, where the various materials that make up a cigarette are separated and processed. The filters are melted into hard plastic that can be remolded to make new recycled industrial products, such as plastic pallets. The residual tobacco and paper are separated out and composted in a specialized process.

According to Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful’s 2019 Pennsylvania Litter Research Study, over 500 million pieces of litter were found on Pennsylvania’s roadways. Of the total estimated litter, 186.2 million or 37.1% were cigarette butts.

Cigarette butts that are thrown on the ground can

contaminate soil and ground water with chemicals and heavy metals. They also fatally impact birds, animals, and marine creatures, which often mistake them for food. The filters, made of cellulose acetate, never fully disappear from the environment.

The CLPP, created by Keep America Beautiful in 2002, is the nation’s largest program aimed at eliminating cigarette butt and cigar tip litter. Since its inception, the program has been successfully implemented in more than 1,800 urban, suburban, and rural communities nationwide. Over the past decade, participating communities have consistently cut cigarette butt litter by 50% based on local measurements taken in the first four to six months after program implementation. You walk your dog, walk for exercise, or go for a run, and most of the time you probably do not give much thought to your safety. Being aware of threats that could invade your routine is the first step toward increasing your personal security.

According to Jerry Harper, president of Community Safety & Security Consultants (CCSC) of Lititz, raising your safety level begins with raising your awareness. “The most important thing I tell people is to always be aware of their surroundings,” said Harper, who recommends taking a situational safety class to learn what concerning behaviors look like. “Be aware of vehicles (that are) parked nearby. Is there anyone near them? What are (those people) doing?” Harper encourages people to trust their instincts. “If you feel uneasy, cross the street,” he said. “Walk near a residence or where you see other people so there are other witnesses involved.”

Of course, being aware also means being alert. “Make sure you’re not distracted,” said Harper. “People like to crank

up the music, and they wear earbuds, so they don’t hear a vehicle coming up behind them (or) they don’t hear the stones moving on the walkway or highway when someone is running up behind them or from behind a bush,” he explained. “I tell people, ‘Keep one earbud out or keep your volume down so you have some hearing.’”

Another recommendation from Harper is to always carry pepper spray. “Have it clipped to your waist in case you’re in a situation where you need to defend yourself and create separation (between you and a threat),” said Harper, who recommends learning to use the spray properly. “We teach people to aim starting at the chest and (moving) upward,” said Harper, who noted aiming only for the eyes will not work if the assailant tries to duck. “Starting out at the chest and zig-zagging upward will maximize the effectiveness due to the vapors of the pepper spray rising upward,” he said.

Some things that can help keep you safer should be done before you even think of leaving your home. Steps such as varying the time that you walk or run and changing up your

Community Forest Panel

Advice From the Community Forest: Ask Our Experts will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 26, from noon to 1 p.m. via Zoom. The live event will feature a panel of Penn State Extension urban foresters and personnel from the Bureau of Forestry, part of the Department of Conservation and Nat-

ural Resources (DCNR). The panelists will address participant-submitted questions and scenarios related to municipal and community tree management, such as street and park trees and natural areas.

Before the panel discussion event, participants may submit their community forestry-relat-

route on a regular basis are simple ways to decrease your risk. “Definitely change your routes and your times if necessary,” said Harper. “(Predators) watch for a pattern so they can plan on that behavior.” Harper recommended altering driving routes for the same reason.

Thanks to technology, there are now phone applications that can alert those closest to you using a key word or PIN. Some apps will alert chosen individuals to your GPS location or record sound or video for an extended amount of time. “If something would happen, (the app) will start notifying the people who are important to you so they can start sharing that information with authorities,” Harper said.

Harper also advises taking a basic self-defense course. “If you are a victim of an attack, it’s nice to have options to escape a certain kind of hold or grab,” he said. “The basics of certain tactics do work to create separation.”

ed questions online via a survey link that will be provided immediately after registration. If time permits, questions can also be asked during the event.

The event will seek to give participants a better understanding of urban and community forestry issues, tree equity, and management strategies from across the commonwealth as the urban forestry team of experts presents best management practices, perspectives, and experience from municipal tree commissions and volunteer tree advocates. The program is designed for municipal officials, shade tree commissioners, urban foresters/municipal arborists, landscape architects, community planners, volunteer tree tenders, and community tree advocates.

There is no charge to participate. Registration is required to receive the link to access the webinar as well as to access the webinar recording. This event is sponsored in part by the DCNR.

For details and registration, visit www.extension.psu.edu and search for “Advice From the Community Forest.” The deadline for registration is Tuesday, Oct. 25.
