homecoming festivities held at Twin Valley High School (TVHS). The king and queen were crowned during halftime at the TVHS football game versus Wyomissing Area High School on Oct. 8. Members of the homecoming court were joined by their parents on the field during the ceremony. Earlier in the day, a pep rally was held in the football stadium. In addition, students were able to attend “Kickback Before Kickoff,” during which they enjoyed yard games and music just prior to the game. TVHS Mini-THON club members were also on hand to sell picnic food and beverages. The annual homecoming dance, which took place outdoors on the stadium’s turf field, concluded the celebration on Oct. 9. In addition to Emma Mae, the homecoming queen candidates

During the pandemic, the Birdsboro Community Memorial Center devised a safe way for children to collect Halloween candy in 2020: a Halloween drive-through. Because of the popularity of that event, a free Halloween drive-through will take place again this year on Saturday, Oct. 23. From 6 to 8 p.m., attendees can drive through Main Bird Park and view family-friendly displays by local businesses and organizations.

a teacher at the school during the final term that it was open from 1964 to 1965. She was presented an honorary citation from Rep. David Zimmerman. The event was hosted by the school’s new owners, Rozanna and Steve Leever, who opened the Red School Learning Lab at the site in September. Steve and Rozanna own the farm behind the school, and Rozanna’s great-grandfather, grandfather, father and aunts and uncles all attended the school, which was known as the Maxwell Hill School. According to www.redschool learninglab.com/history, the oneroom school was built in 1857 by David Mast, who owned the farm behind the school. Most recently, the building served as the Amish Mennonite Information Center, which opened in 1970. Steve and Rozanna bought the school in the summer of 2020. “The walls are original, and all the floors are, too. There was a lot of repair work,” said Rozanna. “Friends came and helped us paint.”

Among the more than 40 items Lavinia Zimmerman has helped gather for the auction portion of the 2021 German Christmas Market and Auction are an “authentic German spinning Christmas pyramid and a German mug.” This year’s fundraiser will wish attendees an early “frohe Weihnachten” (“merry Christmas”) when it is held at Weaverland Anabaptist Faith Community, 210 Weaverland Valley Road, East Earl, Saturday, Nov. 20. A craft and vendor show with more than 15 stands will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. At 4 p.m., German-style food will be available for purchase, and the live auction will start at 5 p.m. Among the crafters will be those selling clothing, prayer pillows, and more. The event is known for featuring food items associated with Germany such as sausage sandwiches and sauerkraut, along with hot dogs, soft pretzels, and apples and dip. Spiced cider and coffee will be served. “We are having mock

The Penn State Laureate is an honor bestowed upon one full-time faculty member each year to bring greater visibility to the arts and humanities, to Penn State, and to the faculty member’s work. During her tenure, McCallum will conduct writing workshops and make numerous speaking engagements throughout Pennsylvania and elsewhere; she will also showcase the works of other Pennsylvania poets during “Poetry Moment,” a weekly segment that airs on Mondays on WPSU Radio and is available for downloading at https://radio.wpsu.org/show /poetry-moment. The motto of Lifecycles is “Do hard things,” and for 60 days this summer, a team of bicyclists did just that. Eight boys and three adults rode 3,700 miles, from Sunset Beach, Ore., to Cape Henlopen, Del., as part of the Trans Am Extreme Challenge Ride. The ride is a project of Lifecycles, a nonprofit mentoring program committed to building young people of character through bicycling. “It was quite an adventure,” said Mike Wise, one of the adults who participated in the cross-country ride that began June 10 and ended on Aug. 8. “When I first heard it was going to be 60 days, I thought, ‘I can do 60 days, no problem.’ I had no idea how long 60 days would really be.” The group took a northern route across the United States. “The first five to seven days were rainy,” Wise recalled, of the group’s journey through Oregon and Washington. They biked through thunderstorms, torrential downpours and unseasonably cold, wet weather. But they never gave up, Wise said, and they See Lifecycles pg 8

Shara McCallum, 2021-22 Penn State Laureate and Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of English, will visit Penn State Berks, located on Tulpehocken Road in Reading, to read from her works at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 25. The event, which will take place in the Perkins Student Center Auditorium, is free and open to the public. Originally from Jamaica, McCallum is a poet who has authored six books and has had poems and essays published in journals, anthologies, and textbooks throughout the United States, the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe, and Israel. Her latest book, “No Ruined Stone,” which was released in August, is described as a “novel in verse” and is based on a thread from the life of Scottish poet Robert Burns, who was considering migrating to Jamaica to work on a slave plantation around the same time his first book was being published in 1786. McCallum’s poems have been translated into Spanish, Italian, French, Romanian, Dutch, and Turkish and have been set to music by composers Marta Gentilucci and Gity Razaz. She has received numerous awards, including the silver Musgrave Medal from the Institute of Jamaica. The award, similar to the United States’ Presidential Medal of Freedom, honors Jamaican individuals for demonstrated excellence in their respective

Joining Wise on the trip were youth team members Zach Greineder, Liam Howell, Micah Lapp, Micah Clark, Monny Smith, Zander Malanchuk, AJ Vega and Jaerrid Strawser, along with adults Al Vega and Michelle Deller. Each day of the trip kicked off with a text of encouragement and Scripture from Lifecycles founder Lee DeRemer, followed by a ride to the evening’s stop. “We’d go out to dinner at night, and that’s when we could really bond, since we couldn’t talk to each other much during the rides,” said Wise, a retired art teacher from Manheim who joined Lifecycles four years ago. The trip brought out the best and the worst in everybody,

The Lifecycles team crosses the bridge from Wrightsville to Columbia.

Wise stated, adding, “We all had our moments when we were struggling in different ways, either physically or emotionally, but the boys all did great. They represented Lifecycles and the Lord well.” At 63, Wise said he isn’t sure he’s up for another crosscountry bike ride, but he knows the memories from this one will last for years. “One of the boys, after the

trip was over, came up to me and said, ‘Can you help me with my devotions? I like doing them, and I feel so much better when I do them, and I don’t want that to end,’” Wise remarked. “That made me realize what a lasting impact this trip is going to have on these boys.” For more information on Lifecycles, visit www.life cyclesteam.org.

Veterans Reminded To Safeguard DD-214 The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) offers a reminder to service members and veterans that one of their most important transitioning documents is their DD-214. Safeguarding this important military document should be a top priority. The DD-214 is a document of the United States Department of Defense, issued upon a military service member’s retirement, separation, or discharge from active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States. It contains information needed to verify military service for benefits, retirement, employment, and membership in veterans’ organizations. Without this key

Tips To Avoid Coronavirus PLACE AN AD epcclassifieds.com Scams The COVID-19 pandemic has been accompanied by an outbreak of coronavirus scams, which may target older Americans. John Waggoner and Andy Markowitz of AARP offer some suggestions for avoiding these scams: -Avoid online offers for coronavirus cures or faster access to vaccines. They may not be legitimate. -Be wary of emails, calls, and social media posts advertising free or government-ordered COVID-19 tests. Check the FDA website, www.fda.gov, for a list of approved tests and testing companies. -Don’t click on links or download files from unexpected emails, even if the email address looks like it is connected to a company or person you recognize. The same goes for text messages and unfamiliar websites. -Don’t share personal information such as Social Security, Medicare, and credit card numbers in response to an unsolicited call, text, or email. -Be skeptical of fundraising calls or emails for COVID-19 victims or virus research, especially if the person calling or emailing tries pressuring you to act fast and then requests payment by prepaid debit cards or gift cards. -Ignore phone calls or emails from strangers urging you to invest in a new stock from a company working on coronavirus-related products or services.
