The congregation at Living God Lutheran Church (LGLC) in Honey Brook recently welcomed its new pastor, the Rev. Justin Nickel. Nickel is the first permanent pastor that the church has had in several years. The congregation was previously led by a series of interim pastors. “They are a remarkable group of people, Nickel said of the church members. “In the four years without a steady pastor not only did they survive, they thrived. They were adding members before I got here. Nickel is a graduate of the University of Colorado and earned a Master of Divinity from Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minn. He is completing his doctoral work at Princeton Theological Seminary in New Jersey. He and his wife, Mary, who reside in Thorndale,
recently welcomed their son, Max, who is 7 weeks old. Nickel, who was a pastor for three years at a small church in the Denver, Colo., area, learned about LGLC while completing his doctoral work at Princeton. “We really liked it here, and I was interested in the church from the profile I was given at the bishop’s office. In the first interview, we clicked right away, he recalled. “I think the people at this church really made the difference (in my choice). They are a kind and open-hearted group of folks. Nickel explained that in the Lutheran denomination, churches are matched with pastors. “I first had to apply through the synod office, which is out of Philadelphia, he said, noting that he applied to be pastor this past spring. On Aug. 19, he preached at LGLC and was named the pastor after a congregational vote. See New Pastor pg 3

For the past several weeks, Nickel has been going out to visit congregation members in their homes. “The most immediate goal is for us to get to know one another,” he said. “I feel (visiting homes) is the best way to get to know people.” He has also visited the Tel Hai Retirement Community, where several congregants reside. Nickel plans to continue the programs already established at the church. “What is great about this place is that if people have an idea, they pursue it,” he said. He noted that the church is currently collecting supplies for Thanksgiving food boxes that will be distributed by Steeple to People. The Sunday service at LGLC, which includes a blend of contemporary and tradi-
tional hymns, is held at 9:30 a.m. The pastor’s sermon revolves around the Scriptural reading. “I try and stick close to the assigned readings for the day,” he said. “The goal is that people walk away feeling like they encountered God’s love.” The church will celebrate its 25th anniversary on Sunday, Oct. 28. Bishop Patricia Davenport will preach at the service, which will be followed by a congregational meal. “The slogan back then was ‘A church

6 - COMMUNITYCOURIER - Morgantown/Honey Brook Edition - October 24, 2018
from pg 1 An uncommon sight greeted early-bird commuters in downtown West Chester on Oct. 10: more than a dozen deputy sheriffs on the run. Receiving some illumination from a Sheriff’s Office truck with its lights flashing, the group was in the final stage of the 2018 Superior Fitness Challenge. The challenge began at 5 a.m. with 100 push-ups followed by 100 sit-ups. Afterward, the deputies
donned 30 pounds of equipment, including large shields, before they each dragged a 150-pound dummy up and down a long hallway, jumped over a 5.5-foot wall, carried a battering ram about a block, and then ascended and descended a nine-story staircase while wearing weighted vests. The ordeal preceded a five-minute break. By 6:45 a.m., the deputies started the finale, a 2.5-mile formation run around the borough of West Chester. As drivers and pedestrians watched, the deputies braved several inclines, offering each other encouragement
in the process. Cpl. Joseph Woulfe, the fitness coordinator who oversees the challenge, said the routine was created by Chief Deputy Sheriff Jason Suydam. Initially, it represented the first step in the application process to join the Fugitive Apprehension Unit before it was opened up to all deputies. Woulfe explained that the test accomplishes more than just an assessment of physical prowess. It also measures teamwork, dedication, and determination, qualities that come in handy when deputies
Fall Celebration from pg 1 By Ann Mead Ash
Some of the women who organize the free Community Fall Celebration at Weaverland Mennonite Church remember when it was held at Overly’s Grove, and they estimate that it has been about a decade since the church began inviting area families to take part in the annual trick-or-treat alternative.
This year, as in the past, when the doors open at the church, 210 Weaverland Valley Road, East Earl, at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31, a variety of activities will be available for young children, middle-schoolers, and teenagers. “Inside, we will have lots of children’s games,” said Shannon Martin, one of the committee members organizing the event. Martin listed cornhole, a rubber band game, a football toss game, a duck

pond game, a golf putt game, and a lollipop toss game, along with face painting, among the activities that will be available inside the church. “There will be children’s prizes for every game,” she added, noting that pretzels, erasers, and stickers are examples of the prizes children will receive for playing the games. Outside the church, an inflatable obstacle course and a bounce house will be available, along with a corn dig. Live music outside will be provided by church members, and attendees may warm up around one of three fire pits or take part in a hayride. Free food that will be given away outside the church will include hot dogs, french fries, soft pretzels, chocolate chip cookies, ice cream, and candy. Hot and cold beverages and snack foods, such as chips, will be given away as well. The idea behind the event, which will conclude at 8:30 p.m., is to offer a safe place for families to enjoy fun and fellowship. Costumes are welcome. Organizers noted that the 2017 event attracted 1,000 attendees, based on the number of soft pretzels that were given away. Approximately 150 church members help with the trick-or-treat alternative by working at the event or donating baked goods or candy and prizes. In the case of inclement weather, readers are encouraged to visit www.weaver land.org for information.

Admission will be free. “We have been meeting since August to plan it,” Jenzano said, noting that the idea came from township supervisor John McHugh. Other committee members include Frank Fradella, chaplain of the Honey Brook American Legion Post, and veterans who live at Tel Hai. The ceremony will include a performance by the Chester County Choral Society, and guest speakers will include state Sen. John Rafferty and state Rep. Tim Hennessey. A Missing Man Table will be set up to represent Americans who were or are missing in action from the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard. Fradella will explain the symbolism of items on the table. “We will recognize four veterans for their service - two from Tel Hai who are World War II vets and two from Honey Brook Borough (who are) Vietnam vets,” said Jenzano. “The mayor of Honey Brook Borough, Chris

Resh from pg 1 Library support the library (and) love it,” she stated. “It is important to have a community behind the library, which is what I learned from my time there.” Resh earned her Master of Library and Information Science degree from Drexel University after completing her undergraduate studies in library science at Kutztown University. Additionally, Resh holds a master’s degree in business administration from Alvernia University. She heard about the job opening for system administrator through a Pennsylvania library website. “This (job) was posted, and I thought it would be a good fit for me,” Resh recalled. “I have a great interest in furthering library services to the people of the county and ensuring quality services.” Since she started her new job about one month ago, Resh has been visiting member libraries throughout the county. “The reason I do that is to maintain cooperative working relationships,” she said. “We do a lot of planning of where we want to see libraries going in the future and explore ideas that technology will provide.” One of Resh’s responsibilities is to complete reports and audits that are required by the state Office of Commonwealth Libraries. She also meets monthly with the library directors and youth services directors. “We talk about where we want to spend the funds we have, different initiatives and how we can best utilize the funds that we do have for the greatest impact,” she said, noting that each library is independently run. “We are a federated library system, so each library is independent. Each library has its own board, (budget) and director,” she explained. She is also in the process of evaluating the strategic plan of the library system. “I am working on reviewing our mission and vision statements to better represent what we do and using those to guide our strategic plan,” she noted. “I will also be creating a manual for new library directors and board members.” According to Resh, libraries in Berks County are trying to make books more accessible through technology. “There are a lot of people that love reading books. We have been spending a lot of time and resources on cultivating more digital resources, e-books and audio book offerings, which has been well received by patrons because of the ease of access,” noted Resh. She said that people now consider libraries as welcoming community centers where programming is offered for patrons of all ages. “I think that one of the reasons I am enjoying this job so much is that I believe in Berks County libraries and I believe in the good work we are doing,” she added. “We are impacting the lives of people in this county in a positive way and want to continue to do that.” The office of Berks County Public Libraries is located at 1040 Berks Road, Leesport. HPTBC Schedules Gala Dinner The Historic Preservation Trust of Berks County (HPTBC) will hold its third annual gala dinner, “A Celebration of the George Douglass House,” on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Reading Public Museum, 500 Museum Road, Reading. The event will highlight the work of the HPTBC and the organization’s 2018 accomplishments. The focal point of this year’s dinner will be a presentation on the George Douglass House, which is currently undergoing restoration. Historian Thomas Lainhoff’s presentation on the George Douglass House will outline the architectural and historical importance of the structure. The house was built circa 1763 by Colonial entrepreneur George Douglass and has undergone several changes and additions. It remains an example of Georgian architecture. Lainhoff’s presentation will include a brief description of the elements of the five-year structural stabilization
and restoration of the building. Topics will include the flooring, woodwork, and plasterwork in the parlors, hallways, and chambers in the house, as well as the plastered cove cornice and shingled pent roof on the exterior. Lainhoff worked for 35 years for the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission at various historic sites, including Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum and Washington Crossing Historic Park. Additionally, he served as director of Gunston Hall in Virginia from 1992 through 2003. Since 2007, he and his son Chris have conducted their historical carpentry and joinery craft as Museum Quality Building Restorations, including major preservation and restoration projects on the HPTBC’s Keim Homestead, a National Historic Landmark. They are currently working on the George Douglass House, as well as the HPTBC’s Mouns Jones House, both on the National Register of Historic Places.
Prepurchased tickets are required for the gala event and will be available through Thursday, Oct. 25. Separate ticket fees have been set for HPTBC members and for nonmembers. For additional ticket information, readers may visit www.historic preservationtrust.org. The HPTBC is an organization that acquires, preserves, and maintains historically and architecturally significant properties in Berks County and educates Berks County residents and visitors about the role these sites played in Pennsylvanian and American history.
