Seniorcitizens along with local children are welcome to take part in Helping Hands Bingo, a new intergenerational activity being offered at the Boone Area Library in Birdsboro.
Bingo takes place every Friday at 10:15 a.m. and is open to seniors and children age 3 and over along with their caregivers. There is no charge to participate, and no registration is required.
Instead of numbers, the bingo card uses photos so that young children are easily able to play. In addition, the spaces are marked off with Lego blocks rather than bingo chips. Children who match three items in a row can declare “bingo” and are awarded small toys and gifts, which they can choose from a prize table.

For the second consecutive year, Sheila Martin of Birdsboro has been recognized for her
sewing skills and creativity as part of the Pennsylvania Make It With Wool Contest. She earned a third-place award in the Adult category last year. This year, she captured first place, which qualifies her to participate in the national competition.
For this year’s look, Martin sewed a three-piece ensemble, which consists of her version of a lightweight motorcycle jacket that she created using a McCall’s pattern. It features a diagonal zipper, pleather tab-and-stud details and a silk lining. She also made matching lined slacks and a black turtleneck sweater using a digital pattern. Martin wore black accessories, but she plans to wear the outfit with jewel tones in the spring.
“I basically modified the idea of a motorcycle jacket. It fits me well and follows my curves,” said Martin. “I have always been fascinated by how there was one zipper that travels up one side (of a motorcycle jacket) and it’s embedded in a seam on one side and embedded in a lapel on the other side.”
The program began on Sept. 23, when residents of Birdsboro Lodge, a local senior center, joined preschool-age children to play bingo at the library. “The idea is to connect people who would not normally cross paths,” said library youth
services coordinator Sarah Terry, who leads the weekly bingo games.
Terry noted that playing bingo has benefits for people of all ages, such as helping with concentration and hand-eye coordination. She noted that older children who are homeschooled are also welcome to participate.
“My vision was to see seniors and children being a team. Everyone has to help each other,” Terry said, when explaining how the name Helping Hands was chosen. “Some people need help picking up the Legos and some (children) need help identifying the pictures with the shapes and colors. It’s helping in both directions.”
The next Helping Hands Bingo is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 4.

5K Run/Walk For Life Set
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Chester County Connect Care (CCCC), formerly known as Chester County Women’s Services, a nonprofit pregnancy care medical center, will present its annual 5K Run/Walk For Life on Saturday, Nov. 12, rain or shine, at Hibernia County Park in Coatesville.
The event will begin at 9 a.m.,
followed by awards and prizes for best times per age group for those running the 5K. New this year will be a category for children running the 5K. “We will have trophies for the top boy and girl winner for the kids age 13 and under,” noted Nicole Crist, CCCC development director.
There will be separate registration fees for adults, teens ages 13 to 17 and children
age 12 and under. All registered participants will get a bib and an event T-shirt.
This is the second year that the event is being held at Hibernia Park. “Last year, we had 385 participants. It was very successful,” said Crist.
Crist explained that the 5K course makes a figure eight in the park. The runners will set off first, followed by the
walkers. Families with children in strollers are welcome. However, jogging strollers are recommended because there is a portion of the course that is not paved and goes through a field.
The event will include an opening ceremony. “We have a pastor, and our vice president, Amy Cudd, will talk about our mission and where the funds are going,” Crist said. A DJ will provide music throughout the event to encourage the participants.
Also participating in the 5K walk will be Myriam Ruager, CCCC executive director. “Myriam pushes an empty stroller to honor the unborn and the (babies) that have been lost,” said Crist. “It is really powerful.”
The fundraiser is designed to support the agency’s ongoing mission to provide medical, educational and material support to women and families facing unplanned pregnancies. All services are 100% free and offered in both English and Spanish. Families are supported physically, emotionally and financially through

The Chester County commissioners approved the first round of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) grant recipients, with Commissioners Marian Moskowitz, Josh Maxwell, and Michelle Kichline stressing that the ARPA grants will aim to provide an equitable infusion of resources to meet local pandemic recovery needs and help accelerate the ongoing rebuilding of Chester County’s economy.
In the first round, 73 groups and organizations were selected and awarded ARPA grants totaling close to $40 million. Chester County received more than 300 ARPA applications for funding requests from a wide array of municipalities, public authorities, small businesses, and nonprofit organizations that are located within or provide substantial service to the county. Application funding requests amounted to three times the total ARPA funds allocated to Chester County.
The grants were distributed as follows: $7.4 million
for housing; $13 million for behavioral health; $1.4 million for workforce development; $1.6 million for community facilities and programs; $900,000 for child care; $1.6 million for food security; $8.7 million for public health; and $5.2 million for public safety.
Chester County’s ARPA funding recommendations were made to the commissioners by a volunteer committee
of 18 Chester County residents and 18 county staff members. The volunteers formed six independent review teams and developed a system that followed ARPA guidelines to review proposals and address each priority for ARPA funding. All ARPA funding applications recommended by independent review teams have also been reviewed by Susquehanna Accounting and Consulting
Services (SACS) to ensure compliance with federal rules.
The county is continuing its due diligence in evaluating additional projects and expects to announce further awards at a later date, potentially before the end of the year.
A list of the first round of Chester County ARPA fund awards can be found at www.chesco.org/arpa.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) called on all Pennsylvanians to join in the Pick Up Pennsylvania statewide fall campaign to clean up streams, rivers, and lakes in their community. Pick Up Pennsylvania, a grassroots campaign that began in 2004, is part of the anti-litter movement in Pennsylvania.
The Pick Up Pennsylvania fall campaign runs through November each year. It is coordinated by Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful and sponsored by DEP, PennDOT, and the
Ocean Conservancy International Coastal Zone Cleanup. This support provides registered events with free trash bags and gloves.
Residents can visit https://cleanup.keeppa beautiful.org/Calendar.html to join Pick Up Pennsylvania cleanup events in their community. Those who would like to register their own local cleanup event can do so at www.keeppabeautiful .org/programs/pick-up -pa/organize-an-event/. Individuals, families, neighbors, students, civic organiza-
tions, and local governments are invited to participate.
The Wolf Administration released its Litter Action Plan in 2021 in response to a 2019 Pennsylvania Litter Research Study, which found Pennsylvania had more than 500 million pieces of litter on its roadways. The action plan includes strategies for all Pennsylvanians to fight litter in their communities. As part of the plan, the state launched a public awareness campaign, PA Fights Dirty, this summer. The campaign calls upon Pennsylvanians to ensure every piece of their trash, regardless of size, is disposed of properly.
The DEP identifies many ways Pennsylvanians can fight litter at www.dep.pa .gov/litter. PennDOT provides many additional litter cleanup volunteer opportunities, including Adopt-AHighway and Litter Brigades, at www.penndot.pa.gov.

Helping load the Pennsylvania Lions tractor-trailer was Lowe’s employee Jes Henderson, assistant store manager of operations, who drove the forklift. Lions Club members who provided assistance were Dale High from the Intercourse Lions Club, Dick Sware from the Willow Street Lions Club, Paul Shrom from the Christiana Lions Club and Mike Schaeffer from the Millersville Lions Club.
On the same day, a second tractor-trailer was loaded with supplies at Vision Resources of Central Pennsylvania in Harrisburg.
“The tractor-trailer from Morgantown went to Vision Resources, and we finished loading it up with supplies coming in from all over the state. We had 40 skids of items on those two tractortrailers,” reported Christiana
Lions Club member Jim Groff, Pennsylvania Lions disaster relief coordinator. “They left over the weekend and arrived in Kentucky on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 23).”
Items collected included box fans, hoses and buckets, grills and charcoal for cooking, tarps, water cans for fresh water, flashlights, electrical cords, hand warmers and blankets.
“I got a list from the Lions from Kentucky of what they required. I only sent what they needed, which makes it more efficient,” said Groff.
“The Lions in Kentucky are the best Lions I have ever worked with in all the years I have been in disaster services. They are very organized. I am so proud of them.”
The Lions held a similar drive in January for the victims of the tornado in Kentucky,
and Lowe’s was once again the spot where the tractor-trailer was loaded. “In January of this year, we, the Pennsylvania Lions, gave a total in value of $300,000 (worth of supplies),” said Groff.
Groff and the Lions have a long history of helping with disaster relief not only by collecting donations but working in the affected areas. Groff has traveled to help tornadodevastated Joplin, Mo., as well as New Jersey and New York towns hit by Hurricane Sandy. “With boots on the ground you see what it’s all about,” said Groff.
He said the efforts are in keeping with the Lions Club motto of “We Serve.” “Lions have a heart and passion to help people,” Groff noted. “It is teamwork - people working together to help people in need.”

She actually finished the turtleneck the night before the competition on Oct. 1, which was held at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex. At the event, each ensemble was flat-judged and then judged while being modeled by the entrant. Judging was based on poise, construction of the garments, fit and wearability and promotion of the versatility of wool.
“I wanted to showcase what I can do and my creativity,” Martin said. “There are specifications on the wool fabric that we use. It must be 60% genuine wool because
there are so many (imitation) blends. The point of using the thin (material) is to illustrate that wool does not have to be overly warm and really heavy. I would have no problem wearing the slacks in summer.”
She said each of the pieces that she created can be used as the basis for other looks. “I can wear (the outfit) with a bright magenta pink or blue (blouse), and I can’t wait to wear that jacket with jeans,” said Martin.
“Separates are fun.”
Martin is currently photographing the outfit and modeling it on video in preparation for the national contest. “This year, the garments for nationals are being
shipped to Michigan, and they will be judged by a panel of judges,” she noted.
“They will look at sewing skill and excellence and more subjective things like style and creativity.”
She said that this year’s outfit was particularly challenging to create. “The pattern was extraordinarily difficult, and I am a seasoned, accomplished sewer,” Martin shared.
“(But I enjoy everything) from design, inspiration and ideas to figuring things out and engineering. I enjoy the whole process. It’s a like a delicious meal - I don’t want it to end.”

Hopewell UMC Packs Meals As Part Of Kindness Campaign
at Hopewell United Methodist Church (UMC) in Downingtown on Oct. 16 to pack 35,000 meals in two hours in partnership with Meals of Hope. The event was part of the church’s monthlong Campaign for Kindness, encouraging and engaging Chester County residents and businesses to spread kindness throughout the community.
Approximately half of the meals packed within the two-hour timespan are being distributed locally through the Chester County Food Bank and the remainder will be distributed through Meals of Hope to
people in Haiti, a country that Hopewell UMC supports through its Beyond the Walls program.
In addition to the meal packing event, Hopewell’s Campaign for Kindness, observed during October, included home repair projects with Good Works, making and serving meals at Safe Harbor in West Chester, helping with flood relief work and participating in reverse trick or treat events at senior living facilities.
Hopewell’s Campaign for Kindness also offered ideas for acts of kindness that people can do at little or no cost, including giving someone a compliment, offering an
umbrella to someone in the rain, calling someone you haven’t spoken to in a while, buying a gift card for someone in need, sending someone a
card and donating a book to a Little Free Library.

In early 1976, Steve Loewen was looking forward to graduating high school. He had already paid for his first year of college at Penn State University, where he planned to study engineering. However, in March of that year, an auto accident claimed the life of his mother, Louise, and left Steve paralyzed with only limited use of his arms.
In 1976, Penn State was not equipped to accommodate a student in a motorized wheelchair. “They didn’t even have curb cuts,” pointed out Steve. With college out of the picture, Steve seized on the popularity of citizen’s band radio, in which he had an interest. He purchased an operating Radio Shack store at 101 S. Railroad Ave., New Holland, in October of 1977. The store moved to 125 W. Main St. in 1979 and later to 375 W. Main St. By the late 1980s, Steve was tired of renting store space and purchased the house at 331 E. Main St. In the mid-1990s, he added the building in the back, which now serves as the store. Steve is currently
celebrating the store’s 45th anniversary.
Over the years, Steve has experienced the excitement associated with a number of firsts in the world of electronics. In 1978, he had one of the first TRS-80 Model 1 computers. “It had 4K of memory, and you saved information on a cassette
tape,” said Steve. Beginning in 2005, the switch from analog to digital television required a converter box. The government provided coupons, and Steve did the paperwork to handle them, helping 1,400 customers to make the change.
When SiriusXM radio signed a well-known shock jock in 2006, Radio Shack was involved and Steve’s store was the area outlet. Steve sold and activated hundreds of the units. “Sirius was huge,” recalled Steve. In 2015, Lancaster County Communications made the move to digital for first responders. “Everybody had to get new radios and scanners,” said Steve, who was able to help local fire company members, families, and friends with the upgrade, which improved safety for all. “I have been blessed to have a front-row seat to the evolution and explosion in technology starting in 1980,” Steve said.
When Radio Shack filed for bankruptcy and closed 7,000 stores in 2015, Steve’s store became one of only a few in the state that remained open. Radio Shack still provides the store with limited products, along with a multitude of other suppliers. “We have the most inventory we’ve had in 15 years, and we’ve branched into amateur radio,” said Steve. “We (also) fix Apple screens,” he added.
“None of this would have been possible without hundreds of people who have come in and out of my life at the right times,” said Steve, who added he believes God is responsible. For the last six years, Ralph Hess has served as his caregiver and general manager assisting Steve at the store, while also devoting time to the local community.
More information may be found by searching for “New Holland Radio Shack” on Facebook.

excited about the future too,” he said.
Jesse Bills, who has been the pastor of Pequea Evangelical Congregational (E.C.) Church for more than a year now, said the church has a busy fall planned. “We’ve got a lot going on,” he noted.
The extra activity involves the church’s 145th anniversary. Bills said planning started in earnest in August. “We saw it as an opportunity to celebrate the past and get
Observance of the anniversary will kick off with a community worship service on Sunday, Nov. 6, at 10 a.m. at the church, 5482 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gap. E.C. denominational leader Randy Sizemore will travel from the church’s home offices in Myerstown to preach that day. His sermon, titled “Returning to Jerusalem,” will focus on Acts 1:1-12. In addition to Pequea E.C. Church
members, worshipers from nearby Mount Airy E.C. Church and Pequea Presbyterian Church will visit for a corporate worship service followed by a fellowship meal.
On Sunday, Nov. 13, at 3 p.m., a birthday bash will be held. Mike Sigman, pastor of Grace Community Church in Willow Street, where Bills serves as pastor of discipleship, will bring a short and encouraging message on the subject of partnership, and juggler Chris Ivey will entertain.
On Sunday, Nov. 20, at 3 p.m., an old-fashioned hymn sing will be held. The special guest speaker will be Jeff Byerly, who grew up in nearby Cambridge. Bills explained that Byerly just retired from serving for more than 20 years at Bethesda E.C. Church in Schuylkill Haven. “He is a son of this congregation,” said Bills, pointing out that Byerly came to faith at Pequea and was
called to ministry from the church.
Bills noted that the Mount Airy congregation represents more than just a neighboring church. “Mount Airy is our mother church,” he explained, noting that, prior to the founding of Pequea E.C. in the fall of 1877, a small group from Mount Airy began holding a Sunday school in an old schoolhouse in the area.
“Eventually they started this church,” said Bills.
Bills wants residents from the surrounding area to know that those who have been part of the church history are welcome to take part in the celebrations.
“We are inviting retired pastors and anyone that has connections from the past to come out and join us,” he said.
Regular Pequea E.C. Sunday services are held at 9 a.m. in person or by livestream at www.pcchurch.online or by searching for “Pequea Church of White Horse” on Facebook.
