Giving out handmade ceramic bowls at the Empty Bowls event are (from left) potter Jill Moyer, volunteer Sue Verdegem and Howard Moss, co-director of the Twin Valley Food Pantry.

Locally, the fifth annual Empty Bowls event will be hosted by the Twin Valley Rotary Club on Friday, Nov. 5, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at Conestoga Mennonite Church, 2779 Main St., Morgantown.

“It’s a community event to help those who may be experiencing some hard times and need the services of the food pantry.” For a set donation, ticket holders will receive a handmade ceramic bowl and the opportunity to sample up to 10 soups. An admission fee will be collected for children under age 10, who will receive soup, but not a bowl. Takeouts will also be available. All proceeds will go to the Twin Valley Food Pantry (TVFP), which is housed at the church.

“(People will) leave with an empty bowl to help remember the millions around the world who go to bed each night hungry,” noted Rotary Club secretary Mary Ellen Mahan, event organizer. The ceramic bowls given out during the event are made throughout the year by art students from Twin Valley High School (TVHS) and by residents of the Tel Hai Retirement Community in Honey Brook, as well as local professional potters. Rotary Club members also created ceramic bowls for the event during a workshop led by local pottery artist Jill Moyer. The soup will be provided by local restaurants, including the Heritage Restaurant and the Windmill Family Restaurant, both located in Morgantown. Soup, along with bread donated by local businesses, including Shady Maple Farm Market, will be served by volunteers. Servers and volunteers will be masked and wearing gloves.

“Sewing … is exhilarating and peaceful at the same time. I found so much passion and peace during the pandemic by sewing again. It lit my fire,” shared Sheila Martin of Birdsboro, who was recently was named the third-place winner in the Adult category of the Pennsylvania Make It With Wool Contest. Martin, who learned to sew from her mother and her junior high home economics teacher, Kathryn D. Brown, resurrected her passion for the hobby during the stay-athome order and decided to enter the contest for the first time last year. “In the depths of the pandemic in August of 2020, I read a call for entries in the Community Courier,” she recalled. “Having been in a fast-track business career for 35plus years, I had set garment sewing aside. I never forgot my sewing skills. I did draperies, home decor and slip covers, but no apparel sewing.”

Martin was assisted in her re-entry in sewing clothing by Linda Siegel, director of PA Make It With Wool. “She helped me with online fabric purchases and even websites to go to and patterns to buy online. That’s how I got jumpstarted again,” said Martin, noting that she won third place last year by creating a threeseason wool coat. “That really got me going, and it was such a rebirth of this passion.” Martin also joined the American Sewing Guild; Fashion Showing and Chat, based in Wyomissing; and the Lancaster Area Sewing Network (LASN). “I have been growing in advancement of skills and in product knowledge and learning about sewing intelligence in the 21st century,” she stated. For this year’s contest, held at the Pennsylvania Preferred Banquet Hall at the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg, each entrant was asked to construct at least one wool or wool-blend garment using knitting, crocheting and/or sewing skills. “The only specification for the contest is that wool be used. It has to be at least 60% wool because there are

so many blends out there,” Martin explained. “The whole thrust of this contest is to preserve the merits of natural, pure wool.” Martin submitted a twopiece ensemble, which included a color-blocked tunic and classic tapered pants. The pants were made from a wool and silk blend called “sharkskin” in gunmetal color, and the tunic was made from ivory wool crepe, lilac and pink crepe and the sharkskin. Martin adapted the original pattern to reveal surprise shots of color, and she color-blocked one of the sleeves. Each entrant’s ensemble was flat-judged and then judged while being modeled by the entrant. Judging was based on poise, construction of the garment(s), fit and wearability and promotion of the versatility of wool. “They looked at our sewing skills and how excellent the garment was made,” said Martin. “One of the intangible benefits was helpful, kind and constructive comments provided by the judges.” For more information about the contest, email Siegel at linda@lebaweb.com or visit www.makeitwithwool.com.

Uniting In Praise - Voices From The Ends Of The Earth

NationsWorship will virtually unite Christians from around the world on Nov. 19. BY ANN MEAD ASH

During 2020 when COVID-19 restrictions were isolating people from each other, Global Disciples, an organization based in Lancaster, decided to find a way to bring them together. “In the midst of the pandemic, we said, ‘Is there a way for us to gather online and worship God? To gather all across the globe and express our unity in Christ?’” said global worship specialist Tim Bentch. Bentch said the virtual event, NationsWorship, is significant because it crosses cultural, political, and international boundaries. “It’s a chance for believers to stand together as one, and we won’t allow different perspectives and other COVID divisions to come between us,” he said. For 25 years, Global Disciples has worked with clusters of churches in Africa, Asia, and the Americas to train members of churches in those areas to be missionaries in their homelands. “Our goal is to help people come to know Jesus as Lord and Savior by working through local churches that are closer to those unreached areas,” explained Bentch.

The 2020 event involved videos, Zoom, and livestream technology to bring people together. For 2021, NationsWorship will also include a live component, which will be held at DOVE Westgate Church, 1755 W. Main St., Ephrata, on Friday, Nov. 19, at 7:30 p.m. The event will be livestreamed and also broadcast again at 10:30 p.m. The video will be available on demand through Saturday, Jan. 15, 2022. According to Bentch, the event will include videos from a number of cultures around the world. “It’s a chance for the church here in America to worship (along) with unique expression of worship from Africa and Asia,” said Bentch. “The worship may come from a village of brand-new believers, and it may be very simple - just clapping and singing,” he said. “Those are parts that really move my heart.” Bentch also described a modern worship song, “Glory to the Righteous One,” which is being written for the event by James and Daniella, a couple in Rwanda who are musicians and worship leaders. “On that song, I am working with people in India, Mexico, Nepal, and Ethiopia and videotaping

them singing along on the chorus,” said Bentch. Bentch said that the 2021 NationsWorship is based on Isaiah 24:16, which reads in part, “From the farthest part of the earth comes the sound of songs.” “(There will be) all these voices coming together and worshiping God as one,” said Bentch, who noted that the DOVE worship team will lead several songs and that a diverse worship choir is being created for the event, which Bentch noted has become important

for the international partners. “They told us last year, ‘This is the first time we really felt connected,’” explained Bentch, “and we are honored to worship together with our brothers and sisters from diverse places of the world.” DOVE Westgate in Ephrata can accommodate 900 worshipers. Those wishing to attend NationsWorship live are asked to visit http:// globaldisciples.org/nationsw orship to register prior to the event.

Residents and team members from the Heritage of Green Hills, a healthy lifeplan community in Shillington, recently gathered to write positive messages and signatures on a truss that was then hoisted to its spot atop the new Health Care Center. The Heritage Hotties, a cheerleading squad made up of residents from the community’s independent living neighborhood, were on hand

to add spirit and pep to the event as they shook their signature blue and gold pom-poms. Construction on the new building is on track for a late spring 2022 opening. According to Heritage of Green Hills executive director Doug Walther, the new center will feature wide hallways and oversized windows, which will allow for an abundance of natural light while also giving residents views of

The Heritage of Green Hills also recently celebrated the 60th anniversary of the film “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” with the return of its annual Little Black Dress Party, which had been on hold since 2019.

Ladies dressed in their most glamourous black outfits and pearls to celebrate happiness and friendship during the event. At the party, attendees were given light-up “diamond” rings, wax lips and roses in Tiffany blue to complete their looks. The Little Black Dress Party celebrates the spirit of the iconic Audrey Hepburn, who famously said, “I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls.”
