Teenager Publishes Books To Benefit Animal Rescues By Francine Fulton
Combining her creativity, talent for words and love of animals, Chester County high school student Caroline Capuzzi, 17, recently published a book, “Dog Joy: Amazing Stories of the Indescribable Love Only a Rescued Dog Can Give.” The book features the stories and photos of 26 dogs that have been adopted through rescue organizations, as well as information about those organizations. One hundred percent of all profits from book sales is being donated to the rescues listed in the book, which include Animal House Project in Pottstown and the Animal Rescue League of Berks County in Birdsboro.
To date, at total of more than $2,500 has been donated to several of the rescues featured in the book. Caroline also donated copies of “Dog Joy” to rescue and shelter organizations featured in the book so that they may sell them at events and keep 100 percent of the proceeds. So far, the rescues have received $971 worth of books. Caroline, the daughter of Mike and Becky Capuzzi of West Chester, explained that the idea to publish a book came about this summer when she and her father were discussing activities she could take part in during her break from school in addition to working in the kennel at a local veterinary hospital. MORGANTOWN - HONEY BROOK
The David’s Drive 831 AllAmerican 5K will be held on Saturday, Nov. 10, on the campus of West Chester University (WCU). All proceeds will benefit David’s Drive, a nonprofit charity committed to improving the quality of life for hospitalized and homeless veterans. Same-day registration will open at 9 a.m. at Ehinger Gymnasium on the campus of WCU at 700 S. Church St., West Chester. The 5K will begin at 10 a.m., and participants may run or walk. Attendees are encouraged to wear red, white and blue to the event, which is being held the day before Veterans Day. The race will be professionally timed, and water and snacks will be provided to all participants. Medals will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers of the 5K. People are also invited to walk the 5K. David’s Drive 831 (DD831) was created in memory of David Turner Jr., who died in 2009 at the age of 20 of a suspected heart arrhythmia. At the time, David worked at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center. David had great respect for the veterans he served, many of whom were homeless and in early recovery and came to the VA without essentials. Since the charity’s formation by the Turner family, basics such as socks, underwear and T-shirts are
provided to the veterans at the Coatesville VA on a regular basis. The 5K is being hosted by Phi Sigma Sigma, where Samantha Turner, David’s sister, was a member when she attended WCU. “They continue to support David’s Drive even though Samantha graduated in 2014,” noted David Turner Sr., DD831 founder and president. “That shows the strength of the Phi Sig bond between sisters. Samantha lost her brother her freshman year at WCU, and she wouldn’t be who she is today without her sisters.” The race organizer is Meeka McKently, a junior at WCU and the philanthropy chair for Phi Sigma Sigma. She noted that the 5K will feature a paved course that will take runners and walkers through the college campus. “This year’s course is a little different because of construction on campus,” she noted. “The course will be clearly marked, and there will be people directing the runners. The runners will set off first, and the walkers will carry on behind them.” She noted that participants with dogs and children in strollers are welcome. “We have about 50 people preregistered, and we always get walkups,” said Meeka. “It’s not a huge race, but it’s a good amount of people.” Members of the Turner family will be on hand at the event to answer questions and provide information about David’s Drive. “We will have an area dedicated

Meeka has experience organizing 5K events. For the past eight years, she and her family have held the Marc McKently Memorial 5K Run in honor of Marc, Meeka’s brother, who died in a car accident in 2011 at the age of 17. “I was happy to get a chance to (organize the David’s Drive 5K),” said Meeka. “I have a background in planning a 5K, and I understand the Turners’ story and I have a connection with them.” She added that the Marc McKently Run finances a
scholarship in Marc’s name to a senior graduating from Oley Valley High School in Berks County. The Torch from pg 1 Ed Kurtz, director of The Torch, ex plained that although the music will begin at 7 p.m., The Torch opens at 5 p.m. on Sundays, so people are welcome to arrive early to enjoy fellowship. “I am responding to a request for a place where musicians can gather to use their talents and give release to the music bottled up inside of them,” said Kurtz when explaining how the program was conceived. “The drummer from a local church, Dan McCormick, is the inspiration for this new venture. He enjoys music of many kinds and wants a place where he can add to the ‘joyful noise,’” explained Kurtz. “Probably the best description of the program would be a jam session. Very spontaneous. “All music will be inspirational and uplifting,” Kurtz added. Musicians are invited to bring their instruments and join in. “We already have a guitarist, drummer and accordion player involved,” noted Kurtz. “We could use a keyboard player and more (musicians).” Already on the schedule on the first Sunday night of every month at The Torch is Christian Acoustic Music Open Mic Night hosted by the Roland Zimmerman Family. Kurtz said that many local musicians and singers share their talents during those sessions. “The singers range from individuals to families - some with talented small children,” said Kurtz. “Some use instruments;

some sing a cappella. People come with a variety of instruments - flute, saw, guitar, accordion and keyboard.” For the acoustic open mic nights, musicians may register at 6:30 p.m.; music takes place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. “At about 8:30 p.m., the music stops, and the warm fellowship begins,” Kurtz remarked. Musicians are offered a small stage, room for tuning, a keyboard for pianists, four microphones with stands, sheet music stands and tools. No drum sets are allowed, but hand drums and percussion instruments are permitted. Musicians are encouraged to perform acoustically or a cappella. More information about the program is available at www.facebook.com/Christian OpenMic and www.openmic. rolandzimmermanfamily.org. The Torch Community Center, which celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2017, was founded by a group of residents who wanted to establish a place for people to find support, enjoy Christian fellowship and take part in social activities. The Torch facility is located in the Clock Tower Plaza behind Zou’s Garden. It includes a pool table, a small kitchen area, a stage for performers and coffeehouse-style booths and sofas designed to encourage conversation. There is also a library featuring books for both adults and children. For more information about The Torch and its activities, readers may visit www.the torchcc.org or call 610-5078468 or 610-286-9172.

The sale will feature thousands of books, which are currently being sorted by volunteers. “We’ve been very busy cataloging the many community donations of books and media, as well as books and DVDs culled from the library’s collection,” said Maria Gavin, membership and volunteer chair for the Friends group. The Friends’ spring book sale was expanded to four days for the first time this year, and the fall book sale will also run for four days. “There were a lot of people (shopping) during the daytime,” noted Judy Elliott, president of the Friends group. Unlicensed drivers learning to drive are often taught the benefits of defensive driving. Safety is often the focus of such lessons, but the benefits of driving safely and efficiently extend far beyond safety. According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), aggressive driving can lower gas mileage by roughly 15 to 30 percent at highway speeds. In addition, a 2017 study from researchers at the DOE’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory found that aggressive driving can contribute to a reduced fuel efficiency by as much as 40 percent in stop-and-go traffic. Speeding as well as rapid acceleration and braking are hallmarks of aggressive driving, and each of these habits puts drivers, their passengers and other motorists at risk of accident and injury. By taking the following steps to drive more efficiently, drivers can save money and potentially even lives. Rooftop cargo units can be beneficial for family vacations or other extended getaways, but using rooftop cargo boxes as traveling storage units for items not needed on a daily basis or simply keeping empty units attached to vehicle roofs compromises fuel efficiency. Rooftop cargo bins increase the aerodynamic drag on vehicles, forcing them to burn more fuel than they would burn while moving without anything attached to the roof. The DOE estimates suggest that large, blunt rooftop cargo boxes can reduce fuel efficiency by as much as 25 percent when a vehicle is moving at speeds between 65 and 75 miles per hour. Trunks are not closets, so resist the temptation to use them to store golf clubs and other items that are better stored in a house or garage. Research has indicated that an extra 100 pounds in a vehicle can reduce gas mileage by about 1 percent. Because that figure is based on the percentage of extra weight relative to the vehicle’s weight, drivers of small vehicles may find using their trunks as closets to be especially costly and inefficient. Cruise control makes it possible for vehicles to maintain constant speeds. That helps drivers ensure they are always obeying the speed limit, and it keeps cars from the constant acceleration and deceleration that wastes fuel. Efficient driving is safe, costeffective and eco-friendly. With some simple strategies, drivers can do their part to protect the planet and make roads safer, all while saving money.

Book Sale from pg 5 “It was helpful especially for parents who wanted to shop while their kids were at school.” She added that book sales remain popular with the community. “People thought e-readers would decrease the donations, but that hasn’t been the case,” Elliott said. “People want to get off their devices and read (actual) books.” Books will be offered for sale in the main conference room area of the annex, and smaller individual rooms will be dedicated to certain sale items, such as paperbacks. Fiction books will be sorted alphabetically by author. Nonfiction books will be sorted by category, such as parenting, health and beauty, politics, history, gardening and cookbooks. All proceeds from the upcoming book sale will be used for supplemental programming and materials for the library. In the past year, the Friends group has sponsored adult and youth summer and winter reading programs, new audiovisual equipment, a new book drop, yoga and tai chi classes and more. For those who cannot attend the upcoming book sale, the Friends operate a Book Nook inside the library, where patrons can find deals on donated books and DVDs throughout the year. The Book Nook, open during regular library hours, is located to the right of the library’s entrance when entering from the parking lot. Donations for the Book Nook are accepted year-round. People may leave donations of books and DVDs in the bins located near the rear entrance of the library. All donations are taxdeductible, and tax donation forms are available. “Books should be in decent condition with no mold, and we do not take textbooks,” Elliott noted. The mission of the Friends of the Henrietta Hankin Branch Library is to support the library through advocacy, volunteer services and fundraising. For

noting that there is also a section to help tutors prepare students to receive their GED. “We also have a library of materials for the tutors to use with the students that includes various publications for different levels.” Students’ skills are tested when entering the program, and they are asked what goals they have. All the information is given to the tutors before they meet the students. Every effort is made to match tutors with students based on their preferences and geographical locations. In addition to studying to receive their high school equivalency diploma, some students are studying to become United States citizens, while others have goals of improving their reading, writing and spelling. Some need help with everyday experiences in the community. “Sometimes students and tutors will go different places,” Rikess said. “They might go to restaurant to learn to order from a menu or to grocery store to learn

Tutors are asked to meet with a student for a minimum of three hours a week for at least one year. “We ask them to meet at public locations,” Rikess explained. “We have a lot of people from Exton, West Chester, Downingtown and Coatesville that like to meet at the Chester County Library in Exton. “It’s a great location for people to meet.” She said that most student/tutor pairs meet twice a week for an hour and a half each time. In the past, tutors were required to attend a training workshop held at the library in Exton. Now, the program offers online training for tutors. “We recently switched to online training with the Pennsylvania Department of Education,” Rikess pointed out. “(Volunteers) can take (the course) within a month of starting tutoring. There are eight modules; each takes about a half hour, and they can do that on their own time at home.” Rikess said that the online training deals with many of the same topics that were covered during the tutoring training workshop. “The program covers teaching routines, teaching adult basic education, ESL, lesson planning, using textbooks and teaching strategies,” she explained,

“I have been working in the kennel for a year and half, and I love dogs,” Caroline recalled. “My dad and I were brainstorming ideas for a project that I could do on the days I didn’t work so I could do something productive over the summer. We came up with an idea of doing a fundraiser for dog rescues and making a book about it to spread awareness and inspire people to adopt their next pet from a rescue.” The stories featured in the book are from real pet owners in the community. “My dad has his own business, and he asked his clients to submit stories about their rescue dogs,” Caroline explained. “We were expecting only 20, but 25 got back to us. They emailed (the stories), and I proofread them.” In addition to the 25, the Capuzzi family dog, Stella, is featured in the first chapter. Stella was adopted from Greenmore Farm Animal Rescue in West Grove. Also featured in the book is Cado, who was adopted by Marybeth Yannessa, board president of Animal House Project, which operates the Chester County Pet Food Pantry, where Caroline and her dad volunteer. Cado was rescued after being left in a cardboard box outside a farm in rural Georgia along with other new-
after high school graduation to major in journalism. “I used to write my own stories, but (I had given that up),” she added. “Coming up for the idea with the book brought that back into my life - the passion of writing.” Those who would like to learn how to publish their own Dog Joy book or those who would like to order the book may visit www.DogJoyBooks.com. born puppies. After collecting the stories and photos, Caroline designed the cover and came up with the title. “ We finalized the cover, the dimensions of the book, the colors and the title, and I proofed everything a second time and we sent it to the printer,” she said. She shared that she enjoyed reading about the dogs in their owners’ words. “They are all so different. All the dogs came from different backgrounds,” she noted. “Some people wrote about their dog’s passing. That brought me to tears.” Caroline said that her next endeavor is to help rescue organizations publish their own books as a fundraiser. “If any rescues or shelters want to make their own rescue-specific books, they can do that through us,” she added. Caroline, a senior at B. Reed Henderson High School in West Chester, plans to attend college

St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Glenmoore held a Blessing of the Animals on Oct. 7. The date was chosen specifically in connection to St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals, as it is close to the Feast of St. Francis, which is in October. Multiple parishioners and a few community members attended with their pets by their side. All the pets in attendance were dogs. The event started with owners leading their dogs in an animal parade around the back lawn of St. Andrew’s Church. The parade ended at a tent, where a short service and the Rev. Tommy Thompson’s blessing of each animal occurred. Local business partners provided gift items that were given away at the event. An on-site food truck served empinadas, and a local business showcased bunnies, mice

Lisa Kerstetter (left) and Meredith Dahl (right) are looking forward to bringing the community together to participate in the upcoming CrossNet Christmas Gift Program, which involves three ways to help children in need in the ELANCO School District this holiday season.

“What is neat about the CrossNet Christmas Gift Program is that it brings all sectors of the community together - the churches, the businesses, the school district, the nonprofits,” said Meredith Dahl, executive director of CrossNet Ministries. “Everybody (who is involved in) this event (helps) make it possible to serve 450 children. It’s ultimately to share the love of Jesus.” According to Dahl, CrossNet endeavors to bring Christmas presents to children in the ELANCO School District who receive free and reduced-cost lunches through three giving programs. Area residents may choose to adopt a local family. Those opting for this route will receive a wish list for each child in the family. The list will include items children need and want, along with a reading suggestion. CrossNet office manager Lisa Kerstetter stated that organizations, churches, and businesses often adopt a family. “We have quite a few (groups) that do that,” explained Kerstetter. “They split up (the list) and make it fun,” she said. Individuals and groups that would like to adopt a family should contact CrossNet at 717355-2454 by Thursday, Nov. 8, so Kerstetter can match donors with families. “We can take donors later than that, though, if we have families (in need),” she added. A second way to help is to bring a toy to a local donor bin. “We are collecting toys in bins because sometimes we need extra things or (we receive) a family’s list late,” explained Dahl. Toys that may be placed in bins include miniature
cars, skateboards, sports equipment, children’s books, purses and bags, action figure toys, Legos, board games, educational baby toys, craft sets, and more. Kerstetter noted that bins can be found at Flower and Home Marketplace, SquireSide Cafe, JB Zimmerman, and Buehler Family Dental. Items should be placed in bins by Friday, Dec. 7. A third way to take part in the program is to give to the stocking stuffer drive. Items that are sought include small toys and books, keychains, playing cards, glow sticks, harmonicas, candy, chewing gum, headphones, nail polish, lip balm, travel-size personal items, hairbrushes and combs and hair accessories, sticky notes, sitckers, small puzzles, silly straws, wallets, jewelry sets, and beef jerky. Stocking stuffer items should be delivered to the CrossNet offices at 123 W. Franklin St., New Holland, by Dec. 7.

CrossNet from pg 12 On Saturday, Dec. 15, adopted families will come to CrossNet to pick up their gifts. “That day is special because it focuses on empowering the families,” said Dahl. “They pick up the gifts, they wrap them here, (and at Christmas) they give them to their children.” Dahl added that parents may also choose stocking stuffers for each child and that they have a chance to write a thank-you note to the donor. “It’s a really special event based on mutual respect,” said Dahl. “We all fall on hard times, and we are going to help each other out.” Dahl noted that some parents whose children benefit from the program give back by volunteering at the event. Kerstetter said that adult volunteers are needed to help sort incoming gifts during the week prior to the event. “We need extra volunteers from Monday, Dec. 10, through Friday, Dec. 14,” she said. Readers who wish to volunteer may call the CrossNet office. More information about CrossNet Ministries may be found at https://elancocross.org.
