Many theater goers have enjoyed performances by AJ Tantala, a cast member with Chester County’s SALT Performing Arts. Now, the 23-year-old is hoping that one of those audience members will consider giving him the gift of life by becoming a living kidney donor.
Tantala was born with posterior urethral valve syndrome (PUV).
Of
Doctors at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) performed surgery to remove the valves, but damage was done to his kidneys.
Tantala has posted his need for a new kidney on the National Kidney Registry (NKR) website, where he describes his situation. “This past summer I was to work an internship before graduation and it was necessary for me to have a blood test done, and that is when we discovered how poor my kidney function was,” he stated. “Anything below 20% functioning is transplant ready; currently my function is at 11%.”
Turkey Bowl To Run On
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Registrationis underway for the annual Turkey Bowl at Tel Hai Camp and Retreat. The event, which will include a 5K race and a children’s fun run, will take place on Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, Nov. 24.
Registration and race packet pickup will be held from 7:45 to 9:20 a.m. in the camp’s dining hall. The fun run will begin at 9:10 a.m., followed by the 5K race at 9:40 a.m.
“Last year we were able to do an in-person race back to our normal course,” said Bruce Gregory, camp director, noting the event was modified for the past several years because of the pandemic. “We had 316 finishers in the 5K race and 63 finishers in the 1-mile children’s fun run.”
The 5K race this year will take runners through the camp and around the lake. The course includes paved, gravel and grassy paths. While the course is primarily level, there are a few hills for runners to tackle.
The 1-mile children’s fun run for youths age 12 and under will take place on the main grounds of the camp. Parents may run alongside their children at no charge.7
All children who complete the fun run will receive a finisher’s medal. Chip timing for the 5K will be provided by Second Wind Race Timing. First-place trophies will be awarded to the overall female and male runners of the 5K. Medals will be given to the top three finishers in various age groups. The top overall time for the 2021 5K course was 16 minutes and 36 seconds for males and 20:25 for females.
To register, visit www.telhaicamp .org/events/turkey-bowl-run. Online registration will end on Wednesday, Nov. 23. Participants may also print a registration form from the website and mail it to the camp, along with the registration fee. Those who register by Thursday, Nov. 10, will be guaranteed an event T-shirt.
Gregory noted that the Turkey Bowl attracts local participants and people from surrounding communities,
including the Downingtown, Gap, Oxford and New Holland areas, as well as those who are from out of town and in the area visiting relatives for the Thanksgiving holiday. “This is the 31st year for the race, and we are looking forward to another great year,” Gregory stated.
The Turkey Bowl is sponsored by local businesses, which are listed at the event website. Proceeds from the event are used to benefit Tel Hai Camp and Retreat, a nonprofit Christian camp that is a member of the Christian Camping and Conference Association.
The camp is located along Beaver Dam Road, 1.5 miles east of Route 10. The GPS address is 31 Lasso Drive, Honey Brook. For more information, visit the previously mentioned website or contact Gregory at 610-273-3969 or bruce@telhai camp.org. Volunteers are also needed to help on race day. Interested volunteers should contact Gregory for more details. More information about the camp can be found at www.facebook.com/TelHaiCamp.

Getting a new kidney would eliminate the need for Tantala to go on dialysis. “The goal is to find a living donor before I ever need to go on dialysis. That way the second the doctors determine it’s time for me, we will go right to the transplant,” he said, noting that his parents are unable to donate because they are medically ineligible.

The event, “Happy Birthday, Mr. Vonnegut,” is being sponsored by the Albright College English department, the Reading Public Library, the Village Library of Morgantown and the Wyomissing Public Library. “I love Vonnegut, and I volunteered to be on the committee,” said Maria Long, library director at the Village Library. “This is a first-time fundraiser that the libraries are doing together.”
James Speese, Ph.D., a lecturer in the English department at Albright College, will serve as master of ceremonies for the event.
A social hour will start off the evening, followed by the program. “Dr. Speese, who did his dissertation on Vonnegut, will talk (about the author), and there will also be some readings from Vonnegut’s books,” Long explained. “After that, we will have a toast and sing ‘Happy Birthday.’ The program is an hour, but people can stay behind for some cake and to mingle.”
The event will also feature jazz music, a selfie stand and books and merchandise for sale. There will also be a doodle wall in the spirit of Vonnegut’s book “Breakfast of Champions,” which features the author’s little drawings.
Proceeds from the sale of food, beverages and merchandise will benefit the three libraries and future programming at the WCR Center for the Arts. “WCR will sent up
concession tables, and there will also be tables for us to promote our libraries,” said Long.
Vonnegut was born in Indianapolis, Ind., on Nov. 11, 1922. A prolific writer, Vonnegut published 14 novels, several short-story collections and five plays, among other works.
He left Cornell University, where he was majoring in biochemistry, and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943, where he served as an advance scout during the Battle of the Bulge. He was captured by the Germans and spent time in a prisoner-of-war camp, where he witnessed the firebombing of Dresden in 1945. He recreated that event in his novel “Slaughterhouse-Five,” which was published in 1969.
His first novel, “Player Piano,” was published in 1952. Other works include “Cat’s Cradle” and “Happy Birthday, Wanda June.” He died at the age of 84 in New York City in April 2007.
“I like a lot of his short stories,” said Long, noting that her favorite Vonnegut work is “Welcome to the Monkey House,” which is a collection of 25 short stories. “It’s a barrage of his mind at work.”
The WCR Center for the Arts, a nonprofit community organization focused on promoting the arts, is located at 140 N. Fifth St., Reading. More information about the venue is available at www.wcrcenter.org.

Bazaars, Craft Show Planned By Local Groups
BY FRANCINE FULTON
To usher in the holiday season, many local groups are planning Christmas bazaars. Most feature a sale of crafts and holiday decor, as well as homemade food. All are free and open to the public.
A Christmas bazaar will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 1035 Old River Road, Birdsboro (Robeson Township), on Saturday, Nov. 12, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Featured will be breakfast sandwiches, lunch, homemade soups and baked goods, white elephant items, a Chinese auction and craft vendors. For more information, call the church office at 610-582-3655.
Harmony United Methodist Church, 740 Harmony Road, Morgantown, will host a Christmas bazaar on Nov. 12 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Offered will be wreaths, decorations, handpainted ornaments, crafts and
gifts, baked goods and candy. The church is located on Route 10, north of Morgantown. Contact the church at 610-2869823 for more information.
St. Peter United Church of Christ, 1920 Ridge Road (Route 23), Knauertown, will hold its annual Christmas bazaar on Nov. 12 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Offered for sale will be crafts, baked goods, vintage items and breakfast and lunch. Visit www.facebook.com/stpeterunit edchurch and choose “Events” for more information.
The Totally Committed Youth Ministry (TCYM) at MCC (Moving Communities to Christ) will hold a Christmas bazaar on Nov. 12 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at MCC’s main campus, 4221 Main St., Elverson. Available for sale will be clothing, crafts, games, novelties, jewelry, trinkets, skin care products and beauty accessories. All proceeds will be used toward TCYM’s 2022
mission trip. For more information, visit www.moving communitiestochrist.org/ chrstmas-bazaar-2022 or www.facebook.com/TCY MatMCCChristmasBazaar.
Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue (LDAR) will present its annual holiday craft show at Freedom Village at Brandywine, 15 Freedom Blvd., Coatesville, on Saturday, Nov. 19, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. All proceeds will benefit the rescue, which provides foster homes for cats and dogs until they can be permanently adopted.
“It’s not a traditional craft show where vendors come in. It is mostly crafts that are donated,” said LDAR volunteer April Brade, one of the event organizers. “(The items are made) by LDAR friends or associates or people that hear about (the craft show).” Local crafters who would like to donate items for the show should email
LuckyDawgAR@gmail.com.
Among the items for sale will be homemade dog biscuits, dog and cat toys and personalized pet ornaments; holiday decorations; jewelry; and LDAR swag, including sweatshirts. There will also be a silent auction table, a sale of homemade baked goods, refreshments and an opportunity to win gift items. Adoptable cats and kittens and perhaps a puppy will be on-site during the craft show.
LDAR is a nonprofit, nokill, all-volunteer organization. LDAR’s most recent rescue is Harley Rose and her puppy, Hootie. Harley has had many litters of puppies and suffered from years of neglect. Readers can follow Harley and Hootie’s story by visiting www.face book.com/LuckyDawgAnimal Rescue and searching for “Harley Rose” or “Hootie.”
County Government Honors Veterans
In recognition of Operation Green Light, the county government is illuminating the façade of the Chester County Historic Courthouse in green from Nov. 7 to Sunday, Nov. 13. Additionally, the county commissioners recently presented a proclamation recognizing Operation Green Light to county director of veterans services Susan Price.
Operation Green Light is a new initiative that aims to show support for veterans of all military conflicts, as well as to raise awareness about the unique challenges faced by many veterans and their families, along with the resources that are available to assist them. The initiative was introduced by the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania and the National Association of Counties.
Price encourages local resi-
dents to join in displaying green lights to show their gratitude for the sacrifices of veterans and their families. She noted that there are more than 24,000 veterans in Chester County.
Chester County Veterans Affairs (VA) provides benefit information and application services to all veterans and their spouses and dependents in Chester County, helping them to receive the benefits they are entitled to under county, state, and federal laws. The VA also maintains Chester County’s veteran graves registration record, distributes flags and military grave markers, and supports the veteran mentorship program for Chester County’s veteran’s treatment court program.
Additional county services for veterans include the recording of military discharges by the Chester County Recorder of Deeds Office, which safeguards discharge documents in the event of loss, misplacement or natural
disaster, and a Veteran ID Program offering discounts to businesses throughout Chester County.
For more information about the programs and services offered by the VA, visit www.chesco.org/veterans.

For the past quarter century, the Mowday Group has assisted nonprofit organizations, companies and individuals with media relations and publishing needs.
Company president Bruce Mowday, who worked in journalism for more than 20 years as a reporter and editor, had the idea to start a company that would assist nonprofits, for-profits, journalists and the public. During the Mowday

Four of his books, including
his first, on Fort Delaware, are Civil War themed. Three relate to Gettysburg, including “Pickett’s Charge: The Untold Story.” For “Emotional Gettysburg,” artist Karl Kuerner created 20 original paintings and Mowday wrote essays to go with them. Mowday is working with Kuerner on a book to complete a trilogy on the American Revolution’s Battle of the Brandywine.
He has also penned three
true crime books: “Jailing the Johnston Gang: Bringing Serial Murderers to Justice,” “Stealing Wyeth” and “Small Town Cops in the Crosshairs: The 1972 Sniper Slayings of Policemen William Davis and Richard Posey.”
Information about all of Mowday’s books and his company’s services can be found at www.mowday.com. To contact Mowday, email mowday@mowday.com.
Mowday gives frequent talks on his books, writing, publishing and history. He was also a member of the Downingtown Main Street Association and the Valley Forge Park Alliance.
Keeping
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Nicholas Madrigale
of Atglen is facing one of life’s most difficult challenges. The 31-year-old father of four is in need of a heart transplant.
And, while waiting for the call that a heart is available, Madrigale is maintaining a positive outlook and encouraging others facing dire situations to do the same.
“I want to help others who face similar adversities continue to remain positive and stand tall,” he said. “When things happen that are bad and get us down, it is not the end. There is always a way. Sometimes you have to search for the positive, but that is what I do to maintain.”
Madrigale was born with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and it wasn’t until the age of 5 when he was diagnosed after his heart stopped three times before he was resuscitated. He was placed on several heart medications, and when he was 8 years old, he was fitted with his first pacemaker/defibrillator.
In May of 2021, he contracted pneumonia and was diagnosed with chronic heart failure. Currently, he has a PICC line where he receives medication through an IV.
“I am officially on the (heart donor) list. I am a Status 4,” he explained. “That is described as someone who can be an
outpatient with a PICC line and an IV pump that runs 24/7. I change the IV daily and I have a nurse who comes out once week to clean the dressing of where the PICC line enters the body.”
Madrigale expects that he will soon move to the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia to wait for a new heart, at which point he will move up on the transplant list to a Status 3. “I am on the highest dose of medicine you can have as an
outpatient. They are about to bring me into the hospital, and I will wait from there,” he said, noting that the wait for the new heart could take several months. “I am preparing to stay in the hospital for a while.”
Madrigale said that while he is used to living with heart disease, he is looking forward to having his procedure and living with a new heart. “Once it happens and once it goes through, I’ll be able to do more than I ever
For A New Heart
did before,” he said. “I focus on what’s next.”
The community has supported the family with several fundraisers, and a GoFundMe page has been set up to help Madrigale pay for medical bills since he is no longer able to work. He encourages people to contact him on the page, including those in similar circumstances or those who need support for whatever difficulties they are going through.
“I want good thoughts and prayers, but I also want
people to know that they are not the only ones going through tough times, even if it’s not medical (issues),” he stated. “I am always open to talking to people. I wanted to get my story out there because maybe I can help somebody. I think my deter-

A New Dish For The Holiday Table
Thanksgiving hosts and hostesses interested in injecting variety into their Thanksgiving offerings may want to consider a few unique side dishes to complement their turkey dinners. Sides that borrow from familiar flavors may fit seamlessly into the holiday feast and add spark to the meal. This recipe for Gnocchi with Roasted Cauliflower from “Real Simple Dinner Tonight: Done!” (Time Home Entertainment) from the editors of Real Simple is rooted in popular ingredients synonymous with Thanksgiving. Gnocchi is a chewy and filling pasta made from potato - a holiday standard - while cauliflower is a mild, versatile
vegetable that absorbs the spices and flavors of other ingredients. Putting these two ingredients together allows holiday hosts to provide a new side with some familiar flavors at this year’s Thanksgiving dinner.
Gnocchi with Roasted Cauliflower (Serves 4 as a main course)
Ingredients:
1 small head cauliflower, cut into small florets
1/4 cup fresh sage leaves
3 tablespoons olive oil Kosher salt and black pepper
1 pound gnocchi (fresh or frozen)
1/4 cup grated Parmesan
Directions:
1. Heat oven to 400 F. On a rimmed baking sheet, toss the cauliflower and sage with the oil, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Roast, tossing once, until the cauliflower is golden brown and tender, 25 to 30 minutes.
2. Fifteen minutes before the cauliflower is finished, cook the gnocchi according to the package directions. Divide the gnocchi among bowls and top with the cauliflower and Parmesan.
Tip: Cauliflower florets are easier to separate if the core is removed first. Place the head stem-side up. Using a paring knife, cut around the core at an angle, creating a cone-shaped
piece, then lift it out. If the head is very large, halve it first through the core.

Gift Of Life
Tantala recently completed his role as Prince Charming in SALT’s production of “Cinderella.” Directing the show was Sandy Chadwick. “I look at how vibrant and outgoing he is and how much he gives to those around him and can’t imagine him enduring a lifetime of dialysis,” she shared. “We want to do all that we can to help AJ find a kidney from a living donor as that will give him the best possible outcome.”
Tantala’s other roles with SALT include the title role in “Shrek the Musical” and Quasimodo in “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.” He also appeared in SALT’s “Elf the Musical,” “Matilda the Musical” and “The Secret Garden.”
Although he lives in Bucks County, Tantala said he was willing to make the commute to Chester County to perform. “I discovered SALT my freshman year of college (at Rider University) when I was looking for a show to do,” he said. “I saw that SALT was doing ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame,’ which is one of my favorite shows ever, and I auditioned on a whim at this theater an hour away from my home. I was cast in that one and many more because I can’t bring myself to stop auditioning there.”
Tantala is currently directing a production of “The Lion King” with one of SALT’s offshoots called Stagelight, which is a
performing arts program geared toward children in kindergarten through eighth grade.
“A kidney from a living donor would be the ultimate gift to my family and I because it would allow me to continue pursuing my hopes and dreams,” Tantala stated.
For more information about the kidney donation process, visit www.nkr.org. The link to learn more about Tantala can be found at www.facebook.com /neshaminysummerstock in a post dated Oct. 21. Tantala is requesting that people share the link on their social media pages to broaden the scope of the search for a donor.

Connie Dienner, director of Cavod Performing Arts, is looking forward to the organization’s first Day of ThanksGIVING, which will feature a live evening gathering. “The evening is a celebration of all God has done,” said Dienner. “We are so thankful for our donors.”
The Day of ThanksGIVING will begin at midnight on Friday, Nov. 18, with online giving at https://cavod.org. The academy at 675 W. Main St., New Holland, which is normally closed on Fridays, will open at 9 a.m. for those who want to give in person. An Evening of Celebration will be held at Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland, from 6 to 11 p.m. Giving stations will be located in the theater. Dienner pointed out that the fundraiser will also benefit students of the Manheim location at 280 S. Oak St., which opened in 2021. “This
is a combination of both campuses coming together at the main base,” said Dienner.
The evening event will include a dance party with a live DJ, dance and music performances by Cavod students, worship, and free food in the form of pizza, popcorn, cookies, and beverages. Door prize tickets to win tickets to Cavod Theatre and Cavod merchandise, such as hats, T-shirts, and sweatshirts, will be given out, and a drawing will be held each hour.
Cavod Academy offers a variety of classes in dance, voice, and more, with an emphasis on “creating with purpose.” An essential goal of the organization is to offer students a godly environment that inspires excellence in the arts while building community and impacting lives.
Dienner said that fundraisers like the Day of ThanksGIVING benefit children and adults in the New Holland and Manheim areas who want to
take lessons in the environment Cavod offers. “Many families have come to (Cavod) as a place that is safe with a godly influence that sets us apart,” said Dienner. She added that she has seen students grow and gain motivation and even seen lives changed because of the high value Cavod places on each individual’s talents.
“This will be one of our
biggest fundraisers of the year,” commented Dienner, who noted that the organization raises about 30% of its yearly budget. “We will have matching funds, so your gift will be stretched. No amount is too small.”

Shoebox Gifts Sought For Operation Christmas Child
A drop-off center for Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan’s Purse, an international relief organization, will be located at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland. The mission of Operation Christmas Child is to provide local partners around the world with shoeboxes filled with small toys, hygiene items, and school supplies and shipped outside the United States to children affect-
ed by war, poverty, natural disaster, famine, and disease, as well as to children within the United States living on Native American reservations. The national shoebox collection week for 2022 will run from Monday, Nov. 14, through Monday, Nov. 21.
After receiving shoebox gifts, boys and girls are invited to enroll in The Greatest Journey, Operation Christmas Child’s
12-lesson discipleship program. Through the program, ministry partners establish long-term, caring relationships with children and families.
For a drop-off schedule at Petra Church, contact jennys@petra.church or 717354-5394. Members of the community interested in volunteering at Petra’s drop-off center may contact Marilyn Coles at mgcoles@aol.com.
Please Note:Updates can be made to your church’s listing for 1st issue date of each month only. (Changes must be submitted by the previous Wednesday.)
