Twin Valley High School student Benjamin Williams (left) was crowned homecoming king and Tanner Findley was crowned homecoming queen on Oct. 30 following a Laps for Leukemia fundraiser.

Coventryville United Methodist Church will present its annual Christmas bazaar this year as an outdoor event on Saturday, Nov. 14, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The church’s thrift store, The Shop at Coventry, will also be open that day. According to event organizers, the bazaar will include all of the same features that shoppers have come to enjoy - just in an outdoor setting. “(Visitors) can start in the church parking lot, where the bake tables Members of the Mini-THON at Twin Valley High School, including (from left) Kimmy Casey, Lauren LaBruto, Emmia Frantz and Sayge Hervey, joined with Student Council members to present “Laps for Leukemia” on Oct. 30 to benefit Four Diamonds.

win Valley High School (TVHS) Mini-THON and Student Council recently came together to present “Laps for Leukemia,” which took place at the high school track on Oct. 30. As a part of the fundraiser, students were asked to donate one dollar for every lap they walked on the track to benefit Four Diamonds, which helps pay for cancer treatments for children at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital. The event culminated in the crowning of the TVHS homecoming king and queen. According to the school’s MiniTHON adviser, Lance Chappelle, the club had to come up with a fundraiser since homecoming festivities were canceled for 2020. “We could not have the homecoming dance because of COVID, and no one can go to football games, so we thought we would have a charity event,” he said, noting that the homecoming dance is typically organized by the Student Council, which is led by adviser Caroline McRobbie. “We are raising money

safe while still fundraising for pediatric cancer. (With so many things canceled), I am very happy that we could have this event.” Every lap that the students walked counted as a point toward their grade’s total in the annual TVHS Homecoming Olympics (HOCO) competition. “They got a lanyard with tickets and, after every lap, they dropped off a ticket and each ticket was a point for Student Council’s Homecoming Olympics,” explained Chappelle. “Each grade has a competition during (homecoming) week. They all compete for points. The winner gets a trophy and bragging rights.” This year’s HOCO winner was the senior class, which came together to raise more than $1,200 at Laps for Leukemia. Following the walk, Benjamin Williams was crowned homecoming king and Tanner Findley was crowned homecoming queen. Members of the 2020 homecoming court included Antonio Hall, Vincent Marchese, Owen Niedenthal, Robert Wheatley, Molly Steven, Eve Storms, Lexi Swisher and Abby Thatcher.

and awareness for pediatric cancer for the Four Diamonds.” TVHS student Merzadee Buys, who is the overall for the MiniTHON Club, came up with the idea of the walk, noting that the event would not have been possible without the partnership between the two TVHS student organizations. “ We decided to come together because in hard times we need to come together as a community,” she said, noting the event was promoted through school announcements and on social media. In keeping with COVID-19 social distancing requirements, freshmen walked on the track from noon to 1 p.m., sophomores walked from 1 to 2 p.m. and juniors took the track from 2 to 3 p.m., followed by seniors from 3 to 4 p.m. Oct. 30 was a half-day in the school district, so students gave up their free time to take part in the inaugural fundraiser. “Because (the) administration wanted it to be COVID-friendly, it is just the student body (that participated),” Merzadee said. “We wanted to make sure everyone stayed

will be under tents alongside of the church,” explained church member Laura Guest. “There will be a tent back by the shed in the church parking lot that will have a cashier and where people can pick up their takeout food. All of the food and baked goods will be in to-go bags.” Other tents in the church yard will house the Attic Treasures area and the Christmas trim-a-tree sale. The silent auction will be set up in the church pavilion. “Tents will be set up throughout the yard with multiple cashiers,” Guest said, noting that restrooms will be available in the church and at the Chrisman House, located next to the church building. “That will circle people back around to the church thrift shop.” She noted that all children in attendance will receive a free cookie and a free toy from the Attic Treasures area.

With a storied past, the quaint charms of a European village and the outdoor recreation of a mountain sports destination, the town of Jim Thorpe is a must-see town tucked into the Pocono Mountains. Jim Thorpe is a destination rich with history and is often called the “Switzerland of America” because of its scenic views. Its unique Victorian architecture pays homage to its roots of coal mining and industrialism, which today house unique shops and eateries, museums and galleries and popular entertainment venues. With its nostalgic feel coupled with unique history and exciting recreation, Jim Thorpe is a favorite for weekend getaways for many types of travelers. But to truly understand Jim Thorpe’s appeal, one must first look at its roots. Originally named Mauch Chunk, the town was pivotal to America’s industrial development as a main transport area for coal mining. The coal mined throughout what’s now known as the Pocono Mountains was transported from Mauch Chunk to Eastern markets via the Lehigh River, which helped to build the local economy and establish the community as an independent leader in a growing industrial market. Many of the transportation systems of the era, including canals, locks, dams and early gravity railroads, are still a strong part of the community’s culture today. The focus on coal and modern transportation methods brought early 19th-century entrepreneurs to the area, including Asa Packer, a Connecticut native and carpenter by trade. Packer realized the opportunity the coal region held and used his skills to build and repair canal boats to transport coal, eventually establishing the firm of A. & R. W. Packer, which built canal boats and locks for the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company. Packer and his family settled in Mauch Chunk. Packer’s sights were set even higher on finding ways to use technology to transport the region’s rich coal resources. In the mid-1850s, Packer took control of a railway line from Mauch Chunk to Easton and connected railway lines to the coal mines in Luzerne and Schuylkill counties. Known as the Lehigh Valley Railroad

Lehigh River and Mauch Chunk National Historic District and that remains much like it did when first constructed in 1861 as a memorial to Packer and his accomplishments. Visitors can learn more about Packer’s successes as a businessman and his work as a philanthropist through guided tours held throughout the day at the 17-room Italianate villa. If you want to experience a little of what it was really like to live as a Pack-

Company, the line eventually extended into the Susquehanna Valley and New York state to connect with the Erie Railroad, effectively growing the region’s industrial reach even farther and establishing Mauch Chunk as a center of industrial commerce, tourism and entertainment. Today, visitors can get a glimpse of Packer’s success with a visit to the Asa Packer Mansion, a National Historic Landmark that overlooks the

The community is invited to drop off new or gently used paperbacks at the Little Free Library, which is located at 3226 Morgantown Road in Mohnton in the parking lot of Honey Spas, where Honey serves as operations manager. All types of paperbacks will be accepted, with the exception of romance novels. “(Operation Paperback) sends books overseas and to veterans in the United States and at VA Hospitals,” Honey explained. “After you register as a volunteer, they send you an email and give you information. You have to print labels in each book that say, ‘Operation Paperback’ and you can write personal notes to the (military members or) veterans. Some veterans or soldiers will ask for specific books or genres.” After opening the Little Free Library this summer, Honey has maintained an inventory of books. As the library steward, she rotates the books inside the box on a regular basis so that frequent visitors will always have a selection of books to choose from. “I get a lot of books donated, so I have an entire room where we sort through them to put into the library because I change them out,” Honey explained, noting that Operation Paperback is an ideal way to donate extra books. “I appreciate what our soldiers do, and I thought it would be good for the community to help also.” For more information about the organization, readers may visit www.operationpaperback.org. As part of the Little Free Library program, readers are invited to take a book or donate a book. Each book in Honey’s library is labeled “Always a Gift. Never for Sale.” Honey makes an effort to place seasonal books inside the box such as fall-themed books. “For the holidays I will get a few stuffed animals and call them Reading Buddies,” she said. “(Children can) take them home and read to them and they don’t have to give them back. It’s a way to promote reading among children.” Although the box is open 24 hours a day, those who have books to donate are asked to bring them into the showroom if the building is open. Honey will then sanitize and stamp them before placing them in the library. If the business is not open, the books can be left in the box and Honey will take care of cleaning them, stamping them and putting them back in the box. The book box has been registered as “Ellyn Honey’s Little Free Library,” with the charter number 99929, at www.littlefreelibrary.org. A listing of other local libraries can be found on the website.
