More than two years ago, Cavod ballet director Stephanie Morales went to sleep one night and dreamed of a ballet. “(In the dream) were the names of the characters, their journey, and what it would be about,” said Morales, who woke up in the morning and wrote down
everything she could remember. She brought the ballet to Connie Dienner, director at Cavod Academy of the Arts. The result was “Wonder,” an original Christmas ballet, which was performed for the first time in Cavod Theatre in 2019. The story is suitable for family members of all ages. “Wonder,” choreographed and directed by Morales and featuring a cast of 37, will be presented at Cavod Theatre, 685 W. Main St., New Holland. This year, “Wonder” will run on Fridays, Dec. 3 and 10, at 7 p.m.; on Saturdays, Dec. 4 and

11, at 2 and 7 p.m.; and on Sundays, Dec. 5 and 12, at 4 p.m. “Wonder” is the story of Gracie, played by Sierra Hurst, and Nick, played by Lincoln Everett, two orphaned children who are searching for the wonder of the holiday season. They are aided in their quest by three Christmas Lights - Twinkle, played by Sarah Blatt; Flicker, played by Annika Blake; and Pixie, played by Audrey Pavlica. As they search for the “wonder,” the children visit the Toy Shop, the Christmas Tree Village, and a cathedral. Through

their adventure, they learn that the wonder of the holiday season comes from love and from being loved. Morales made a few changes in this year’s production. “We will have an icicle battle scene,” she said. “I really wanted to focus on the juxtaposition between the lights, who are there to show what wonder is, and the icicles that represent staying in the mundane,” she said, explaining why she decided to expand the conflict between the two entities. “It almost affects the whole story line, but it doesn’t, and that’s exciting.” Morales also added some marshmallow dancers to the Sweet Shop in Act 2. “That dance is super cute, and those girls are really adorable,” she said. The Sweet Shop, which was added to the 2020 show, features a baker and little gingerbreads played by 5-to 7year-olds, along with hot chocolate and gumdrops and peppermints. Other scenes include a snow blizzard and a sequence with choir dancers. Morales noted that the concession stand will be open during performances, and attendees will have opportunities to purchase flowers to give to cast members. Tickets may be purchased by visiting www.cavod.org, emailing info@cavod.org, or calling 717-354-3355. Tickets will be discounted for students.

Tips For Cooking With Nutrition In Mind Beloved dishes and comfort foods often share positive elements, notably their flavor and ability to quell hunger pangs. cream in creamy and tangy foods like potato salad and coleslaw. Greek yogurt adds live and active cultures that can improve gut health, and it also cuts down on the calories and fat in the recipe. Greek yogurt also can be used in onion or vegetable dips for snack platters. Cooking with the right pans can make foods more nutritious, as well. Cast-iron, nonstick or enamel-coated pans and skillets require less oil or butter to prevent foods from sticking. When it comes to seasoning, people can replace salt with other herbs and spices that can add flavor without extra sodium. In addition, they should always taste the recipe before adding more salt, as it may be fine without it, suggests Harvard Medical School. Tweaking recipes can make it possible to enjoy one’s favorite foods without sacrificing nutrition.
to give up tasty comfort foods. Just about any recipe can get a healthy makeover, and people may consider the following cooking tips to make dishes a little more nutritious. One healthier method of cooking is using an air fryer. With the crispy coating and juicy interior of foods made through regular frying come the addition of fat and calories from the oil. Air fryers can simulate the benefits of deep frying without these negative side effects. An air fryer uses heat and air (convection) to mimic the results of deep frying with little to no oil. Home cooks may also ditch the cream in dishes like fettuccine alfredo. Using low-fat milk that is thickened with flour or cornstarch instead of cream can make such dishes a little healthier. Another substitution is using thick Greek yogurt instead of mayonnaise or sour

Eco-friendly Holiday Tips Green is not just a festive color this holiday season. The color may also remind people to be more eco-friendly when celebrating and shopping for gifts. Rebecca Gramuglia, consumer expert at TopCashback.com, has offered tips for being more eco-friendly without breaking the bank this holiday season. Before throwing out plastic or glass bottles or shipping boxes from holiday shopping, people can see if there is another use for them. These items can be repurposed as vases, pencil holders, storage bins, or even a new playhouse for children. People can even organize a DIY Secret Santa with friends where all items are repurposed, with a small budget for craft supplies. When looking for an ugly Christmas sweater for an office party or a pair of snow pants to wear when sledding with family members, shoppers should give their local thrift store a try. Before buying items, people should check the items for any tears
or stains. Shoppers should always hold onto items they may buy but have not yet decided on; otherwise, they may not return to it until another shopper has picked it up. Shoppers are reminded that thrift stores offer more than clothes. They may offer toys, movies, books, or even glassware sets and electronics. When decorating this holiday season, people should consider investing in LED string lights. LED bulbs offer the brightest light for the least amount of money. If people plan to travel over the holidays, they should unplug their appliances before departing or opt to use a power strip. A power strip can cut the electricity with the flip of a switch, and people may find it more convenient to shut off a power strip rather than to pull plugs out of the socket in hard-to-reach places. Through these strategies, people may be able to save money and help the environment this holiday season.

Operation HELP is a fuel fund supported by donations from PPL Electric Utilities employees and customers that provides grants to help customers with their energy bills. WRAP offers free energy-efficiency products, such as LED bulbs, to income-eligible customers to help them reduce the amount of energy they use, and in turn, reduce their bill. All customers, regardless of income, can also take advantage of other bill help services, including budget billing or choosing a payment due date that works for their budget. Additionally, PPL Electric Utilities urges all its customers to share this information with anyone they think may benefit from these programs. PPL Electric Utilities reminds customers that multiple assistance programs exist for those struggling to pay their energy bills. ERAP is a federal program that helps renters affected by financial hardships during the COVID-19 pandemic with free money to cover rent, utility bills, fees, and past-due balances. Placing candles around the Christmas tree may add to the festive décor, but this practice is not safe. Candles should always be placed on a stable surface away from the tree, decorations, and soft furnishings. It is important that candles never be left unattended, and lighters should be put away after being used. After lighting candles, matches should be allowed to cool in a metal or ceramic dish before they are thrown away. Fourth, candles should be swapped for LED versions. Faux candles are a great substitute for the real thing if someone lives in a home with young children and pets who could potentially knock them over. Fifth, the tree should not be placed close to a heat source, including a fireplace or heat vent. The heat will dry out the tree, causing it to be more easily ignited by heat, flame, or sparks. Smokers should be careful not to drop or flick cigarette ashes near a tree. A real tree should not be put up too early or left up for longer than two weeks.

The holiday season presents various fire risks as homes are lit with Christmas lights and candles and people cook seasonal dishes on the stove. To diminish the fire risks associated with the festive season, people may take the following steps. First, electrical outlets should not be overtaxed. Electrical circuits are designed to handle a limited amount of electricity, and exceeding the rated load for the circuit wiring causes the circuit breaker to trip, shutting off the power to the entire circuit. Christmas lighting adds to the overall fire risk unless used correctly. Extension cords should be used only when necessary. Second, cables should never be run underneath carpets. If sockets on one side of the room are in use, individuals should not be tempted to run cables from another socket underneath a rug or carpet. When people walk over the cables, they compress and break down the cables’ insulation, increasing the fire risk. Third, candles should be positioned away from decorations.
