Local Student Named A Finalist In Kid Of The Year Contest BY FRANCINE FULTON
Chester County student Ronak Suchindra, 13, was recently named one of the top 20 finalists for the first Kid of the Year honor being presented by TIME for Kids and Nickelodeon. The TIME Kid of the Year contest is designed to recognize youths who are making a positive impact in their communities. The winner will be named during a television special that will air at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 4, and will be simulcast across Nickelodeon, CBS Television Network, TeenNick and Nicktoons. Ronak is the founder of Kids Connect, a company that offers free online workshops where other students can learn and have fun through interactive activities. Topics of the online classes have included solving a Rubik’s Cube, origami, chess, programming, drawing and robotics. The classes are offered free of charge at www.facebook .com/kidsconnectelearning.
Church Installs Little Free Food Pantry ree food for people in need is now being offered at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Honey Brook. The church recently installed a Little Free Food Pantry box that contains nonperishable food, including pasta, tuna, canned vegetables and tomatoes, as well as personal care items. A sign on the box reads, “Take what you need. Leave what you can. Church member Nathan Lutz spearheaded the effort to install the box, which is modeled after the Little Free Library program that offers free books for people to take and share. “I had the idea before, but when coronavirus came, for me, it became more of a priority, Lutz stated. “People have to eat, and especially

(during the pandemic I find that) I am spending (much more) on groceries. There are people out there who are hurting right now - people right in our own backyards. The newly installed box in Honey Brook will eventually be listed in a directory by It Takes a Village, a nonprofit organization based in Coatesville that has installed and maintains several food boxes in that area. The boxes, including the one in Honey Brook, include a sticker from the organization, which reads, “Take only what you need, leave behind what you can, be the village for your neighbor, share the love with all humans. The box at St. Mark’s will be filled by the congregation, but community members are welcome to donate items as well. food, toiletries, deodorant and personal care items are welcome. However, there are some limitations about what can be placed in the box. Items that will not be accepted include fresh food, frozen food, homemade food and repackaged food. The box is limited to food only, so no clothing, bedding or shoes will be accepted. “People should not put glass jars in the box that can freeze and break, Lutz added. Lutz said his goal is to have at least two other boxes installed in the area, including one in Morgantown and another in the Honey Brook community. St. Mark’s is located at 1040 Chestnut Tree Road, Honey Brook. For more information, readers may visit www.stmarkshb.org or www.facebook.com/stmarkshb.

Ronak, who formed Kids Connect in May in response to the coronavirus pandemic, said the classes were initially developed to give students alternative activities to enjoy while school was not in session. “ With schools being closed, kids were not able to immerse themselves in educational and other social activities,” said Ronak. “ W hen (my) school shut down, I wasn’t left with much to do. Schools only gave limited schoolwork, and I just watched TV or played video games, which wasn’t the most productive thing to do, and my friends were doing the exact same things. All of the kids whom we teach now are engaged with something to do. They are learning different subjects in a fun way.”
After establishing the Facebook page, Ronak solicited the help of his friends, who also teach classes and share their knowledge with other youths. Since the company’s inception, close to 800 students have attended the workshops, and volunteer instructors have given a total of nearly 500 hours. Since the classes are offered online, they can be viewed by students who reside in the United States and worldwide. “I want to reach kids all over the world and help them develop skills,” Ronak said. “(Kids Connect) has a really big future. It has so much potential; I can’t wait to see how it goes.” Those interested in becoming a student instructor may contact Ronak on the Facebook page or email kids connectelearning@gmail.com.
Country Christmas from pg 1 people are at risk right now, but this is an opportunity that allows all people to come together … and experience Christmas as a community,” stated St. Paul’s UMC pastor Jean Howe. Festivities will begin with a community tree lighting at the fire company, located at 3433 Hay Creek Road, Geigertown, at 5:30 p.m. “There will be music, and Santa will be there to wave hi to people,” said Howe. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, attendees can remain in their cars or get out of their cars to watch events live wearing masks and with social distancing in mind. “Each car will receive a guide to travel throughout our community and see lights and go to different venues for different (attractions),” Howe explained. “It
is a self-guided tour.” The event is modeled after a scavenger hunt, and participants will receive a form to check off the places they have visited. Those who visit all the stops will be entered into a drawing to win a gift basket. “Most of the stops will drive-by things. One of the churches is putting up a Nativity scene,” Howe noted. She said the driving tour will encompass about 3 to 4 miles in the village of Geigertown and that there will be at least five stops. The event will conclude at St. Paul’s UMC, 1136 Geigertown Road, Birdsboro, where Threefold Blessing, a praise and worship team, will sing both secular and religious Christmas songs. “The end event will be going to the church where we will have a
living Nativity, a bonfire and music,” Howe said. Visitors will also be able to listen to a live reading of the Christmas story. Howe said that once plans began for the event, many community supporters jumped on board to participate. “The community loves being part of something positive. It is wonderful to see,” Howe commented. “There is more health in our community than there is hurt.” For more information about the event, readers may call 610-286-9479, visit www.stpaulsumcgeigertown .org/events or search for the “Geigertown Country Christmas” Facebook event page. Because of changing coronavirus pandemic conditions, all activities are subject to change. Updates will be posted on Facebook.

Community Invited To View Christmas Light Display Local residents are invited to take a short drive to Sinking Spring to enjoy Lights on Elwyn, a free holiday display featured at the home of Ron and Kerin DeCarlo. The display will open on Sunday, Nov. 29, and run through Thursday, Dec. 31, from 6 to 9 p.m. Those who visit the Christmas light show, which will feature approximately 30,000 Christmas lights, a walkthrough Candy Cane Lane, an 11-foot Ferris wheel and animated characters, are asked to bring donations of dog and cat food, treats and kitty litter. Donations can be dropped off in a bin provided on-site. Pet items, as well as financial contributions, will be donated to the Animal Rescue League (ARL) of
Berks County, Birdsboro. “People can drive by and see it, but we want them to get out. There is plenty of street parking,” Ron explained. “Our setup is like a Christmas village. We have a display in the back. It’s not a three-minute thing; you can take 10 to 15 minutes to see everything.” New this year is a handbuilt sleigh, where visitors can take photos. “This year brand new - we have an actual sled that we built so people can come and take pictures of it with their animals and kids or themselves for their Christmas cards,” Ron said. “They can actually sit in the sled.” Ron begins creating the Christmas display in early November with the help of his friend Tim Gaston. “You will see the time and effort that

goes into this. A lot of the wooden figures are handmade,” Ron noted. “It will be worth (the drive).” The DeCarlos have been decorating their home for more than 30 years but decided to add the charity component about 10 years ago. One year, visitors were asked to donate to Toys for Tots. “A few years ago we decided to do something for the animals,” Ron said, noting that the couple has adopted pets from the ARL. “Last year, we collected $1,380 and lots of food and other supplies for (the ARL).” All money raised during the course of the season will be donated directly to the ARL. “We have a locked cash donation box that is emptied nightly,” Ron pointed out. “One hundred percent of the money goes to the ARL - we take not a cent from it.” Ron said that masks are recommended, but not required. “(Visitors are) sporadic and they are not going to be close together. There is a lot of room to walk,” he said, adding, “Weather conditions are a factor. If it is really pouring, we don’t put it on, (but) snow would be nice.” Lights on Elwyn is located at 216 Elwyn Ave., Sinking Spring. For more information and directions, readers may search for “Lights on Elwyn” on Facebook. In the event of inclement weather, information about the display will be posted on Facebook. More information about the ARL is available at www.facebook.com/berksARL and www.berksarl.org.

PennDOT Requests Public Comments As part of its ongoing work to explore sustainable transportation options, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is requesting public feedback for the PennDOT Pathways Program. Information is accessible at www.penndot.gov/funding and feedback will be accepted through Thursday, Dec. 17. PennDOT faces an $8.1 billion gap in its annual highway and bridge transportation funding to keep the state’s transportation network in a state of good repair. Federal funding has remained essentially flat for several years despite rising inflation. Gas taxes, which comprise 74% of PennDOT’s funding, have become increasingly unreliable. Through the PennDOT Pathways Program, the department is launching an extensive
initiative to examine possible near- and long-term funding solutions and how they could work in Pennsylvania. As part of this program, PennDOT recently launched an alternative funding Planning and Environmental Linkages (PEL) Study to explore options for funding the maintenance and improvement of Pennsylvania’s highways and bridges. PennDOT encourages the public to review the information presented on its online engagement platform and to provide comments. Online comments can be submitted directly from the website or by contacting penndotpathways@pa.gov or 717-325-6129. Comments can be sent via mail to Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, Keystone Building, 400 North St., Fifth Floor, Harrisburg, PA 17120.

Twin Valley Food Pantry (TVFP), an outreach ministry of Conestoga Mennonite Church, 2779 Main St. (Route 23), Morgantown, is in need of volunteers to work at the upcoming food distribution, to be held on Tuesday, Dec. 15. In addition, volunteers are sought to stock the pantry prior to the distribution. Adult volunteers, as well as high school students, can also help stock the pantry on Wednesday, Dec. 9, beginning at 7 p.m. following the delivery of food by Helping Harvest and the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. Volunteers will also sort and unload food items from local donations and food drives. Stocking volunteers will work for approximately two hours. On distribution day, volunteers will meet at the church at 3 p.m. About 30 volunteers are needed for the evening for setup, distribution and cleanup. The work is usually completed at approximately 8:30 p.m. Volunteers may work the whole evening or
volunteer as much time as they can. During both volunteer activities, face masks will be required, and volunteers will take part in social distancing and frequent hand washing. Gloves will be provided. Those who are at a higher risk for illness should refrain from volunteering at this time. In the monthly food pantry newsletter distributed by Leslie Lesher, administrative coordinator, it was reported that in November, the TVFP served 76 families, representing 286 people. “We also had approximately 35 volunteers from across our community supporting the evening. We distributed approximately 6,000 pounds of food items. Thanks to all the donors across the community for their financial contributions or for coordinating a food drive, the newsletter stated. “Thank you all for the hundreds of volunteer hours each month making this important community mission possible. We can always
use your help volunteering at the TVFP - please consider joining us (in December). The pantry is also seeking financial contributions, as well as donations of food and other items. Items can be dropped off at the Conestoga Mennonite Church office on Tuesdays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Those who cannot drop off food donations at the designated times may schedule a time to donate by emailing lesherl.leslie@gmail.com. Items that are needed by the pantry include sugar, cereal, paper products, laundry detergent, dishwashing soap and bars of soap, as well as beverages such as soda, water and fruit juices that do not require refrigeration. lies to apply for financial relief. The deadline for applications is Wednesday, Dec. 30. The Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU), which administers Chester County’s child care grant program, indicated that as of Nov. 18, 639 families representing 1,135 children had been approved for child care subsidies. A total of 140 child care providers from across the county were also receiving funds to cover the substantial protection costs associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. The commissioners announced the $10 million in child care subsidies in October for Chester County families requiring child care services. They also announced $5 million for child care providers, believing that they may see an increase in child care enrollments and require
changes to facilities. The grant programs are funded from CARES Act funding acquired by Chester County government. The commissioners have appointed the CCIU to administer both grant programs because of the organization’s experience in administration of the commonwealth’s Child Care Subsidy program. The Chester County Department of Human Services is coordinating the program on behalf of the county. Guidelines for eligibility include annual income limits, residency in Chester County, and reasons for the child care need. The grant process is open to families with children from birth to age 12. Children with disabilities may be eligible through age 21. Funds for both the $10 million child care subsidy grant
