Boy Scout Troop 140 recognized four Eagle Scouts at a Court of Honor ceremony held recently at St. Peter United Church of Christ (UCC) in Knauertown. Families, friends, fellow Scouts and dignitaries, including state Sen. John Rafferty and Rep. Tim Hennessey, were in attendance to honor the Eagle Scouts - Simon Crew, Tristan Fish, Morgan Norris and John McDevitt - all 2018 graduates of Owen J. Roberts (OJR) High School. Obtaining the rank of Eagle, which is the highest award in Boy Scouting, requires that a candidate complete a series of merit badges, as well as an approved community service project that demonstrates the Scout’s leadership skills. For his project, Simon led a team of Scouts to plan, design, construct and install a collection of post-mounted,

Books lovers of all ages are invited to “take a book and return a book” at three Little Free Libraries that were recently installed locally by Simon Crew as part of his required Eagle Scout Service Project. Simon, a member of Boy Scout Troop 140 of Knauertown and a 2018 graduate of Owen J. Roberts High School, placed the Little Free Libraries at three parks located within the North Coventry Township park system. Those who visit the libraries can choose from a variety of books, including hardbacks and paperback books for adults, as well as children’s books for youngsters of all ages. People may return the books when they are done or donate other books to the libraries.

“Petals Please” Spreads Joy Through Flowers Successful Turkey Bowl Held On By Francine Fulton Thanksgiving Morning Flowers from funerals, weddings and other special events that may be discarded are now being recycled and reused by Petals Please, a newly formed nonprofit organization that presents the fresh flowers to residents of nursing homes, hospices, senior care communities and others. Petals Please was founded in July and already has made an impact in the local community. “We’ve (distributed) about 1,200 bouquets to date,” said founder Beth Adams. “Flowers are a nice symbol of love, care and support. You get so much more than you give ... when you see the joy on a recipient’s face.” Adams explained that volunteers deconstruct large flower arrangements to create smaller individual bouquets for distribution. Cold temperatures did not keep runners and walkers from taking part in the annual Turkey Bowl held on Thanksgiving morning at Tel Hai Camp and Retreat in Honey Brook. “We had a beautiful but very, very cold 27th annual Turkey Bowl race - coldest on record from what I understand,” stated Bruce Gregory, camp director. “Despite the frigid weather, we had 429 participants, plus about 45 race staff.” The Turkey Bowl, which included a 5K race around the camp, as well as a 1-mile fun run for children, attracted

OIC Tutoring Program Seeks Volunteers rs Online Training Available By Francine Fulton
The Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) is currently seeking volunteers willing to help individuals from other countries with their English language skills through its adult tutoring program. No experience is necessary, but volunteers must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. According to Debbie Rikess, who is the new adult tutoring program coordinator, there is a current waiting list of 22 people located throughout Chester County who are in need of volunteer
she said. Tutors are asked to meet with a student for a minimum of three hours a week for at least one year. “We ask them to meet at public locations,” Rikess explained. “We have a lot of people from Exton, West Chester, Downingtown and Coatesville that like to meet at the Chester County Library in Exton. “It’s a great location for people to meet.” She said that most student/tutor pairs meet twice a week for an hour and a half each time. In the past, tutors were required to attend a training workshop held at the library in Exton. Now, the program offers online training for tutors. “We recently switched to online training

OneRunTogether (ORT), a nonprofit organization that provides spiritual and financial support to cancer patients undergoing treatment, recently held its fourth annual fundraising dinner and silent auction at the Downingtown Country Club. The organization raised $32,000 during the event, which was attended by more than 150 guests. “We raised $2,000 more than last year, so we were pleased with that,” said Vernon Murphy, ORT founder and executive director. He noted that because local businesses sponsored the cost of the evening, the entire amount of the night’s donations will be able to go directly to help cancer patients. In addition to the meal, the event included a silent auction where attendees placed bids on items such as artwork, gift baskets, gift certificates, Flyers tickets and more. Cynthia Weaver, a cancer patient who has received funds from ORT, and her husband, Hermond, were guest speakers at the dinner. Cynthia is currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer. Murphy also shared his vision and motivation for starting the ministry after losing his wife, Beth, to breast cancer in 2009. He explained that the name of the organization refers to the 5K runs that are held by ORT throughout the year, along with other fundraisers. The charity’s motto is “OneRunTogether - so no one

fights cancer alone.” Those interested in seeking funds while undergoing treatment may complete an application at www.oneruntogether.org by clicking on Patient Grant Application. ORT’s board of directors reviews all applications, which must be signed and submitted by an oncologist or a certified professional. After an application is approved, bills are submitted for direct payment. Murphy personally delivers the grant money to patients throughout Berks and Chester counties, and he spends time with each of the cancer patients. He also presents them with a Bible. “I end up being more blessed talking to the people. I have gotten so many amazing reactions,” he stated. “It (may be easier) to mail a check, but they appreciate the fact that someone comes to see them.” Since 2011, more than 275 patients have received help with rent, mortgage payments, utility bills and medical costs. “More than 300 grants have been given,” said Murphy, noting that some patients have received more than one grant. “People can apply once a year as long as they are going through treatment and meet financial qualifications.” He added that most grants cover costs associated with rent, mortgage and utilities. ORT holds various fundraising events throughout the year, such as its annual “Hard to the Core” 5K Mud Run at Weaver’s Orchard in Morgantown. “This

The libraries are located at Kenilworth Park, 1206 Scherfel Blvd., Pottstown; Riverbend Park, 845 S. Hanover St., Pottstown; and Coventry Woods Park, 1954 Saint Peters Road, Pottstown. Simon said that he saw a Little Free Library on the boardwalk at the beach this past this summer and decided that he could re-create the idea locally. His first step in making the project a reality was to consult with officials from North Coventry Township. “I attended one of the Parks and Recreation meetings and presented my idea and blueprints,” Simon explained. “I suggested which parks I wanted to place the libraries at. From there, the chairman accompanied me to scout out potential locations, and we eventually decided on final locations.” He said that the project evolved from placing one library to placing three and that he received volunteer help from adults and fellow Scouts. He also designed the wooden boxes that house the books and held a book drive to fill them. Some books were collected at the North Coventry Township building where Simon placed a donation box. The boxes are self-contained and were placed on sturdy posts that were cemented into the ground. “I created the plans myself,” Simon said. “There are kits online, but they can be expensive and show less work by the Scout to fundraise money for materials. The troop members assisted on multiple workdays on the completion of segmented parts for each library.” Simon, who is currently a student in West Chester University’s Honors College, checked on the boxes while on Thanksgiving break, and he is currently working to have the three sites listed at www.littlefreelibrary.org. “The libraries all have official charter signs but are yet to have their GPS locations officially registered with the Little Free Library program online,” he added. “That portion (of the project) will be completed within the next month.”

Thanksgiving dinners for those in need. “After the shootings at the synagogue in Pittsburgh, we made large arrangements and delivered them to all the local synagogues to show solidarity and support,” noted Adams. “We’re not really limited.” Petals Please serves all of Chester County, as well as parts of Lancaster and Delaware counties. Christ Church in West Chester and the United Methodist Church in Downingtown have provided space to allow volunteers to create the arrangements. “We are so touched by the incredible response and support that we have received in a few short months,” Adams stated. “At the rate we are growing, we will soon need additional donated designated space.” People willing to deliver the flowers are also needed. “Our goal is to pair the gifting of the flowers with a friendly visit,” Adams stated. Adams said that there have been a number of clinical studies done on the impact of flowers on the elderly. “Rutgers University did a study and found that flowers decrease depression and increase positive moods and increase memory and (desire for) socialization,” she reported. Adams said that she is pleased at the

mugs and teacups. For locations that do not allow glass containers, volunteers use decorated plastic peanut butter jars. Adams said she conceived the idea to form Petals Please after patients in the hospice where she worked received flowers that were left over from an event. “Once I retired from hospice, I decided to do this on a bigger scale,” she noted. Adams said that she is asking local funeral directors to encourage families that lost a loved one to donate large arrangements to Petals Please. “If you think about a funeral service, there are gorgeous displays that are pretty sizeable,” Adams noted. “It’s unsettling to (families) that they have these arrangements that are works of art and they (may) end up in a dumpster.” Likewise, wedding flowers and centerpieces from wedding receptions are also welcome. “We suggest that (couples) put a note on the tables stating that their first charitable act as a couple is to donate their flowers to Petals Please,” Adams said, noting that the organization does not charge a fee to pick up flowers from weddings or funerals. Since the founding of Petals Please, volunteers have delivered flowers to Meals on Wheels recipients and provided flowers to local churches that held
