A Christmas open house will be held at St. Mary of Providence Retreat Center on Saturday, Dec. 14, from noon to 6 p.m. The event will feature tours of the historic 1890s Potts mansion, also known as Langoma, and visits with Santa, along with hot chocolate and treats. Visitors will also have an opportunity to win gift baskets. New this year is that Santa will be set up in an on-site Gingerbread House, which is located by the indoor pool at St. Mary’s. “Santa will be visiting the children in the Gingerbread House, and there will be refreshments - all by donation,” explained Sister Brenda McHugh, site director. She said that the building that is being used as the Gingerbread House once served as the mansion’s caretaker’s house. “It’s a two-room house with an old stove, and it was built in 1905,” See St. Mary Of Providence pg 8

Tours To Highlight Langoma Mansion One of the highlights of the Christmas open house at St. Mary of Providence Retreat Center in Elverson on Saturday, Dec. 14, will be tours of the historic Potts mansion, known as Langoma, which is a Native American term that means “homestead.” Construction of the mansion was started in 1890 by Joseph Potts, whose family members were local ironmasters. Joseph’s great-great-grandfather was John Potts, the founder of Pottstown. Tour guides will take visitors through the first two floors of Langoma, which features a chapel; 22 fireplaces, one of which was made with pink marble; original brass lighting fixtures that were converted to electric; marble floors; staircases made of marble, onyx and alabaster; and multiple See Tours pg 5

Snow Removal Poole Forge To Present Program Tips Posted For Safe Mail Delivery With the approach of winter in Pennsylvania come freezing temperatures, snow, and ice. The U.S. Postal Service is asking customers to help letter carriers deliver mail safely by clearing snow and ice from sidewalks, stairs, and mailboxes. The Postal Service will make every reasonable, safe attempt to deliver mail during and after a storm. However, wintry precipitation can make mail delivery dangerous and slow. Maintaining a clear path to the mailbox including steps, porches, walkways, and street approach - will help keep letter carriers safe and help them continue to offer consistent delivery service. All customers should keep the approach to and exit from their mailbox or mail slot free of ice and snow. Customers receiving door delivery should make sure their sidewalks, steps, and porches are clear. Customers receiving curbside or rural delivery should remove snow piles, such as those left by snow plows, to keep access to their mailboxes clear for letter carriers; mailboxes should be cleared sufficiently on both sides. Curbside or rural boxes should also be kept clear of vehicles, trashcans, and other objects. Delivery service may be delayed or curtailed whenever streets or walkways present hazardous conditions for letter carriers or when snow is plowed against mailboxes. Delivery will be curtailed only after careful consideration and as a last resort. Delivery of curtailed mail will be attempted the next delivery day. Blue collection boxes also need to be kept clear for customers to deposit their mail and for the Postal Service to collect the mail for delivery. Residents and businesses with collection boxes near their property are asked to keep them clear of snow and ice.

Historic Poole Forge, 1940 Main St., Narvon, will present a Welsh Christmas Eve program on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 4 to 8 p.m. The community is invited to attend the old-fashioned Christmas event, which will feature a bonfire, hot chocolate, Christmas cookies, caroling and dancing. The Amity Colonial dancers will be on hand in the mansion

ballroom. There will be opportunities to learn about traditional Welsh holiday customs. Toffee and Calennig making will be availabe for children. Calennig is a Welsh word meaning “a new year gift.” The Penn’s Woods Puppet Theater will perform “Believe.” For more information, readers may visit www.historicpoole forge.org or call 484-797-5302.

Local author Bruce E. Mowday will sign copies of his new book, “Stealing Wyeth,” at the Downingtown branch of Citadel Federal Credit Union, 1246 Cornerstone Blvd., Downingtown, on Friday, Dec. 13, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. He will also have two signings at the Barnes & Noble in Exton: on Dec. 13 from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Advance copies of Mowday’s new book, “Emotional Gettysburg,” will be available in early December. Local churches have joined together to offer community Christmas Eve services that will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 24, in the auditorium at Coatesville Area Senior High School (CASH). Services, which will feature music, a Christmas story for children and a message, will be offered at 3, 4:30 and 6 p.m. Organizing the event are Eric McAdams, lead pastor at Coatesville Bible Fellowship; Scott Feather, lead pastor at Gateway Church in Parkesburg; and Dwayne Walton, discipleship pastor at Providence Church Coatesville. Walton is also the director of The Parkesburg POINT Youth Center. The pastors said that CASH is the ideal venue to hold the services since it is centrally located and has plenty of parking “Our first idea was the high school because we knew the place was large enough to accommodate (attendees),” said McAdams, noting that the CASH auditorium can hold up to 750 people. “We don’t just want our church congregation to come. We wanted a place large enough to hold the community.” “The other thing is that the high school is a safe, neutral location,” Feather added. During the services, church choirs will sing familiar Christmas carols and worship songs. Lyrics to the music will be projected on a screen so that people in the audi-

ence will be able to sing along. Walton will offer the message. The theme of the message and the service is “Come and See.” “Throughout the Christmas Eve services, we are inviting anybody and everybody to come and see what God reveals of Himself through the person of Jesus Christ,” said McAdams. “The whole service will be an hour long. We will sing together, and the kids will come down and hear a kids’ story,” Feather explained. “Then, those kids will also be given a coloring book and crayons. When they come back to their seats - depending on their age it might be hard to sit for an hour it will give them something to do and it will be a take-home (gift).” The services will end with the lighting of electric candles and the singing of “Silent Night.” A freewill offering will be received during the services to benefit those with medical bills. “We as a community would like to take care of the medical debt (for residents of) Chester, Montgomery, Berks and Delaware counties,” explained Feather. “We are working with an organization called RIP Medical Debt. In those counties, there is $1.9 million in medical debt, which (represents) money that a person or a family owes for medical treatment they received that has gone to collections. By working through the company, we can pay off all of that (debt) for $19,000.” More information about

All the supplies will be provided. “We are going to be setting up stations where we will have items like toothbrushes and toothpaste and washcloths that families can put together (in boxes) and we will give them to organizations in our community (for distribution),” said Feather. “They can also write a note to the person and include it in the bag as a Christmas gift.” Walton said that the event is a way that churches of different denominations can work together as a service to the community. “Our love for one another is greater than our differences, and we do feel that God has called us to be a blessing to the community,” Walton stated. The Lancaster Chapter National Railway Historical Society (NRHS) will host open houses at the Christiana freight station, 10 Railroad Ave., Christiana, on Sundays, Dec. 15 and 29, from 1 to 5 p.m. Visitors will be able to enjoy a leisurely tour of the 1882 freight station decorated for the holidays. Admission is free and open to the public. There will be a variety of railroad artifacts on display, as well as numerous photograph boards displaying pictures of local Conestoga Traction trolleys of a bygone era, restoration of the 1882 freight station by the Lancaster Chapter of the NRHS, local early construction of the Pennsylvania Railroad, railroad bridges and more. An outdoor deck will allow attendees to safely enjoy watching as Amtrak trains race pass the 137-year-old freight station at nearly 90 mph. Visible eastward across the tracks is a 1907 Pennsylvania Railroad passenger station. Passenger service from this station was discontinued in 1952. Newly installed stairs will allow visitors to climb aboard an N7E caboose restored to its Conrail-era paint and logo scheme. The caboose sits along the mainline on the east side of the freight station. The caboose has an enlarged logo that was normally installed on the Conrail engines. Only two cabooses of 20 in the N7E class are believed to have been outfitted with a large, rather than small, logo. A chapter volunteer will give additional informative facts about the caboose and the Amtrak mainline that runs through Christiana. Glenn Kendig will operate his model See NRHS pg 5

David’s Drive from pg 1

Event Raises Funds For Ronald McDonald House

By Francine Fulton

David’s Drive 831 (DD831), a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of homeless and hospitalized veterans, will hold its 10th annual Christmas Gift Wrapping Extravaganza on Friday, Dec. 13, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, 1400 Blackhorse Hill Road, Coatesville. During the event, about 200 volunteers will wrap 1,000 Christmas gifts. The gifts will be distributed to veterans at Coatesville and Lebanon VA Medical Centers and at the Southeastern Veterans’ Center in Spring City. Each box will be wrapped and decorated in memory of the charity’s namesake, David Turner Jr., who died at the age of 20 on Dec. 16, 2009. At the time of his death, David was employed at the Coatesville VA. His family members started the all-volunteer David’s Drive 831 charity to benefit veterans by providing

Affiliated agents and staff members of Coldwell Banker Preferred gathered at the Marple Sports Arena in Broomall for an evening of games at their second Preflympics to raise funds for the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House (PRMH). As a result of their efforts, the charitable arm of the company, Coldwell Banker Preferred Cares, will present PRMH with a check for more than $5,000 to support its mission of helping families with seriously ill children. The top offices for fundraising were the Media, Blue Bell and Conshohocken offices. The Exton office won the Coldwell Banker Preferred Cares Cup.

Center. “Something so simple can bring so much joy,” the letter stated in part. “Although I got this package a couple of days before Christmas, I didn’t open it until Christmas Day. Tears of joy streamed down my face knowing the care and thoughts that went into this endeavor.” The Gift Wrapping Extravaganza is one of DD831’s many efforts that benefit veterans. The charity, which has a motto of “Helping Veterans Because We Should,” organizes coat, underwear and clothing drives year-round. It also offers assistance to previously homeless veterans by helping them with transitional housing and by purchasing new beds and household items for them. Since the organization’s formation, Turner reported that DD831 has provided 52 new beds, sponsored a POW/MIA luncheon and luncheons for women veterans, constructed a playset for children who visit Coatesville VA residents and donated 40 new bikes to veterans and their children, among other efforts. Events sponsored by DD831 have included concerts, parades, a performance by a magician and a trip to see a preseason Eagles football game. Thanks to David’s Drive, eight veterans, accompanied by support staff from the VA, took part in a fishing trip on Sept. 30 on the Chesapeake Bay

in Maryland. The charity has also donated two automated external defibrillator (AED) devices, as David’s cause of death was a suspected heart arrhythmia. One was placed at Triple Fresh Market in Coatesville, where David was once employed, and the second was placed at the Dowingtown VFW Post 845. Turner said that the various projects not only provide comfort to his family but also keep the memory of his son alive. He also credits the community for their financial donations. “Your support has made it possible for our family to memorialize David and it has given meaning to his life; that means the world to us,” Turner stated in a letter of gratitude to DD831 supporters. “Thank you for giving David’s short life meaning and honoring his wish of helping veterans. We are proud of David and we promise to continue his vision.” For more information, readers may visit www.davidsdrive 831.org or www.facebook.com/ davids.drive. much-needed goods and services. The 831 symbolizes the phrase “I love you,” because the phrase contains eight letters and three words that have one meaning. Because of David’s love of Christmas, the family started the Gift Wrapping Extravaganza in 2010. “Hard to believe it’s the 10th year, but I must say it brings us comfort knowing that David is making a positive difference in people’s lives,” said David Turner Sr., founder and president of DD831. William Potts died in 1943, and the property eventually went to the Daughters of St. Mary of Providence, who acquired the Potts mansion in 1948 to be used as a training and education center for children with developmental challenges. In 1984, the children were transferred to a new complex built by the Diocese of Philadelphia in Springfield, Delaware County, called Divine Providence Village. For example, the doors that lead to the main dining room are actually made of two different types of wood. “The doors are very interesting. They are called sandwich doors. One side is white mahogany, and the other side is oak,” Sister Kathy explained. “(Using) two different types of wood, I’m told, makes it stronger. The three-dimensional pieces (on the doors) were nailed in separately.” According to a history of the site, the home is actually a double mansion. One half of the structure was designed to be a home for Joseph and his wife, Mary. The other half was for Joseph’s son, William, and his

wife, Mabel. Unfortunately, Joseph died in 1893 and never had a chance to live in the mansion. William finished the mansion in 1897 and lived there with his mother and his wife. Sister Kathy said that bells were placed throughout the house, some of which are still visible. “They had bells throughout the house so that they could call their staff,” she said. “William Potts had a bell put into the parquet floor (in the dining room), so when he was at the head of the table, he could step on the bell to summon his staff. He had two bells on the wall one bell called the stable help and one bell called the in-house help. Every room where the Pottses lived - the parlor, the library, the great hall and the dining room - all had bells.” Sister Kathy noted that many visitors to the mansion comment on the staircases that appear to “float” because there is no visible sign of support. She learned that the mansion’s builders used cantilevers, or long beams attached to the wall, to support the staircases. “I studied what they called the ‘flying stairs’ because there is no pillar that supports them. Engineers and architects have always asked me how the stairs are supported,” Sister Kathy said. “When The formal dining room is one of the attractions of the Lango- I looked at the blueprints, I ma mansion, the site of St. Mary of Providence Retreat Center. learned that I-beams were conThe mansion will be open for tours during a Christmas open nected to a 13-inch brick wall. This year, thanks to the efforts of Sister Kathy Stark, a member of the Daughters of St. Mary of Providence, the tour will be enhanced with facts about the mansion. “After looking at our archives, we’ve updated the tour with more historical content,” said Sister Kathy. She noted that tours will start in the Green Room, where there will be a new slide presentation offered to visitors that details the history of the structure. “I studied the mansion from the archives and discovered things we never knew before,” Sister Kathy said.

Dental Care from pg 7 appointments. That is a more than 50% increase from 2018, the event’s inaugural year, when CVIM provided free dental care services to 40 veterans. Alberta Landis, vice president of dental services at CVIM, said that nearly 150 veter-

ans have made CVIM their dental home and can come for a checkup every six months. Landis also explained that while most veterans receive medical coverage and benefits, some are not eligible for or cannot afford dental care.

CVIM’s mission is to provide compassionate medical and dental care and health education to people who live or work in the Chester County region who lack access to insurance in order to support their goals. Since the nonprofit organization opened

in 1998, it has expanded its efforts to meet the needs of a growing community. In the past year, 480 professional volunteers, many of whom are licensed doctors, nurses, and specialists, dedicated 56,000 hours to serve more than 4,200 patients in 45,830 visits.

she explained. “We’ve only used it for birthday parties after pool rentals and occasionally for Bible camp. It is an underutilized building. Anything we get from the donations will help to pay for updates like electric and flooring. Down the road, we hope it will be a little café.” Tours of the mansion will be offered throughout the day. There will be a fee charged per person. Children age 12 and under will receive a discount. Although the mansion is open to the public for tours only two times per year, St. Mary of Providence Retreat Center functions as a retreat facility year-round, where people of all denominations spend time praying and focusing on their spiritual needs. In addition to the religious retreat center, St. Mary’s features four buildings that house senior citizens. On the day of the open house, visitors will enter through the solarium room, where there will be Christmas music playing. On display will be various gift baskets that people may win through a random drawing. “The senior citizens have all participated in making the baskets,” said Sister Brenda. Baskets will include a Spa Day Basket, a Movie Night Basket and a Breakfast Basket with pancake mix and syrup. The first and second floors of the mansion will be decorated for the season with greens, Nativity scenes, lights, garland, poinsettias and more. “We will have several Christmas trees,” said volunteer Sara Anderson. “The octagonal porch (will be decorated), and each of the Juliet balconies will be done - east and west.” There will also be Christmas trees in the Gingerbread House, the Green Room and the solarium. Historical items, postcards, written histories and a CD of photographs will be offered for sale in the solarium. “(The CD) is a slideshow that tells the history of the mansion - all in photos,” Sister Brenda said. Weather permitting, visitors will be able to walk the 40-acre grounds and view the outdoor decorations as well. St. Mary of Providence Retreat Center is located at 227 Isabella Road, Elverson. Until the mansion’s elevator is repaired, only the first floor of the building is handicapped-accessible. Live Nativity from pg 1 Church in 2003. After a break in 2018, the event has been revitalized by a new organizing committee consisting of representatives from various churches. “There are probably six or seven churches involved. Primarily, a large number of (committee members) are from Honey Brook Community Church,” explained committee member Leon Stoltzfus, noting that the committee has been planning the event since May. He pointed out that the group has launched a website about the event, www.honeybrooklivenativity.com, which also offers a way to

make group reservations for the first time. The live Nativity will feature several scenes, all depicting the events that occurred prior to the birth of Christ, concluding with the manger scene. It will take approximately 40 minutes to walk through the scenes, which feature live animals and a cast of more than 100 characters, including children who portray shepherds and angels. Luminarias will light the pathways between the scenes. The first scene will feature Adam and Eve, who will speak about their sin and separation from God. They will also talk about the hope they have been given through the promise of a Messiah. The next scene will feature Abraham reflecting on God’s command to leave his country to form a new nation through which God would send the Messiah. In the next scene, visitors will see the angel Gabriel receiving instructions from God to take an important message to a humble girl named Mary. Viewers will then observe Joseph in his carpenter’s shop, as he talks about his commitment to taking care of Mary, the mother of the Messiah. The tour will continue into the grand palace of Herod the Great, where viewers will hear how angry Herod is that a new king has been born. Then, the tour will move out to the shepherds in the field as they tend live sheep while rejoicing about the birth of the Savior. The tour will end when the innkeeper invites visitors into a rustic hay-filled barn where Mary and Joseph will then tell their story. The final tableau will also feature music by an angel choir. “(The live Nativity) really paints a great picture, and it describes the true meaning of Christmas,” said Stoltzfus. “It’s a great family experience.” He noted that the scene builders, who have been the constructing the sets since early November, and all the actors and singers, who have been rehearsing since mid-November, are volunteers. Volunteers are also installing the sound and lighting equipment. “One hundred percent of the cast (and others) donate their time,” said Stoltzfus. “It’s an awesome example of community coming together.” He added that business sponsors helped pay for equipment and tent rental. On Oct. 16, the Pennsylvania Association of Community Health Centers (PACHC) presented its 2019 Awards for Primary Care Excellence (APEX). The APEX Awards represent the pinnacle of service, quality, innovation, and achievement in primary health care. They are designed to recognize the outstanding efforts of dedicated individuals and teams who work in or volunteer for Pennsylvania’s health centers. A number of area individuals were among the APEX honorees. The Customer Service Excellence Award was presented to Denise LaRosa, Berks Community Health Center (BCHC), Reading, in recognition of exemplary customer service to health center patients and colleagues. Dr. Federico Ceppa of La Comunidad Hispana, Kennett Square, received the Outstanding Primary Care Clinician Award in recognition of his significant contributions in the delivery of family medicine, improving quality and outcomes of care, to health center patients. The Outstanding Primary Care Clinician Award went to Helen Wooten, Berks Community Health Center (BCHC), Reading, in recognition of her 20 years of behavioral health expertise and leadership, especially the recent development and growth of BCHC’s medication assisted treatment program, a program developed in response to the opiate epidemic. Dr. Robert Little of Hamilton Health Center, Harrisburg, received the Board Excellence & Service Award in recognition of his dedication and commitment throughout the 50-year history of the health center as a founding physician. He served 35 of those years as a member of the board of directors. Eric Beamesderfer, also of Hamilton Health Center, received the Career Achievement Award in recognition of his years of work in various information technology (IT) roles at the health center resulting in his advancement to IT director. The Innovation Award was awarded to Amy Carr, Lancaster Health Center, Lancaster, in recognition of her successful management of the implementation of a technology solution and workflow processes to handle both the triage and after-hours call processes, as well as an audit process to ensure it was effective. Dr. Catherine Mauss, Family First Health, York, received the Patient Choice Award in recognition of her dedication to providing comprehensive, quality care and impacting the life, health, and well-being of the patients she serves. PACHC is a statewide membership services organization representing community health centers and other safety net providers that care for nearly 900,000 Pennsylvanians at more than 300 delivery sites in rural and urban communities across the state. Readers may visit www.pachc.org for more information.
