Christmas Open House To Feature Mansion Tours By Francine Fulton

Volunteers and staff members at St. Mary of Providence Retreat Center in Elverson are busy decorating the site’s mansion in preparation for a Christmas open house to be held on Sunday, Dec. 16, from 1 to 5 p.m. During the event, visitors will be able to tour the 67-room mansion, known as Langoma, which is a Native American term that means “homestead.” A fee will be charged for the guided tours, with separate prices set for adults and for children age 12 and over. Children under age 12 will be admitted for free. The mansion was built in 1894 by Joseph Potts, whose family members were local ironmasters. Joseph’s great-great-grandfather was John Potts, the founder of Pottstown. Tour guides will take visitors through Langoma, which has 183 windows,

20 fireplaces and 22 bathrooms. The home’s attractions include staircases made of marble, onyx and alabaster and a stained-glass window made of Tiffany glass. “We will have people stationed at different places throughout the house and they will explain that particular area,” explained Sister Ann Hubler, a member of the Daughters of St. Mary of Providence. The building will be decorated with numerous Christmas trees, greens, floral arrangements, candles, poinsettias and more. “We have Nativity scenes to remind us of Jesus and the true meaning of Christmas,” noted Sister Ann. During the event, children will be able to meet with Santa in a room decorated just for them with elves and other figurines. Parents are invited to take photos of their children with Santa, who will sit in front of the fireplace to hear the children’s Christmas gift lists. See Open House pg 2

Girls Who Code, a national nonprofit organization, was formed six years ago in order to encourage young women to pursue careers in computer technology. Locally, a Girls Who Code evening program was offered at the Henrietta Hankin Branch Library in Chester Springs, where girls in grades six through 12 spent 10 weeks learning how to code. Coding, which means to write computer programming, is used to develop apps, websites and software. The culmination of the project was to create a website, which was unveiled at the final session of the group on Nov. 20. The event included a pizza party for all

Doorways in 2012, Chester County has served more than 6,200 clients experiencing homelessness, of which more than 1,300 were children. Nearly 225,000 nights of emergency shelter were made available to the most vulnerable in Chester County, and 1,451 people found permanent housing. Earlier this year, Decade to Doorways published its most recent operational plan to ensure the program continues to prevent homelessness and quickly re-house those experiencing homelessness rather than just manage homelessness. The updated plan will guide the approximately 35 organizations that work to see that the Chester County community is healthy, housed and stable.

The event included an address by keynote speaker Julia Orlando, who, as director of the Bergen County, N.J., Housing, Health and Human Service Center, led that county to be the first in the nation to successfully reach and maintain what is known as functional zero for chronic homelessness. Representatives from Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) recently received a donation from Chester County Commissioners Michelle Kichline, Kathi Cozzone, and Terence Farrell for $300,000. The funds, made available through a community development block grant, have been used to purchase a new primary office location for Chester County OIC in Coatesville. According to president and CEO Joyce Chester, Chester County OIC began in Coatesville nearly 40 years ago. Chester County OIC’s vision is to be leaders in improving the lives of disadvantaged adults by creating educational and employment opportunities. Along with ongoing programs offered by Chester County OIC, including GED, English Language Acquisition, and Certified Nurse Aid, the organization’s new SOAR re-entry program - a strategy that addresses the range of challenges faced by formerly incarcerated young adults who are trying to make a successful transition back into their communities - will serve as a resource to young adults ages 18 to 24 in Coatesville and throughout the county. Chester County OIC’s new location is 22 N. Fifth Ave., Coatesville. Higgins could teach the woman to speak proper English and pass her off as a proper Edwardian lady. Other cast members include Alex Weaver, James Paxson, Brieaunna Avery, and Jennifer Shaffer. Huyard said the directors were attracted to “My Fair Lady” because of its witty British humor, but also because the show is a good fit for the Cavod Theatre and because it gave the cast of 25 opportunities to play interesting characters. Choosing a show to run in December can be tricky because audience members often want to see a production with a holiday feel. Huyard thinks that “My Fair Lady” will fill the bill. “Everything is so warm, and (those who attend) will leave with the Christmas spirit of loving and accepting those around us,” he said. Bulgrien came to the musical looking for chances to make the characters more realistic. “I haven’t watched the movie, so I don’t have that nostalgia connected to it,” she noted. “But as I read through the script, I … wanted to soften Higgins a bit and make their interactions more believable. I want it to be really human.” Tweaking a show with the history that “My Fair Lady” has is not without challenges, however. “People have connections to this show,” noted Bulgrien. “I want to keep what people love about it, even though I want to put a different spin on it.” Huyard is eyeing the costuming struggles of staging a show that features what he referred to as “three-foot hats.” “One of the challenges is finding the giant hats for the Ascot parade,” he noted. “Everything with this era is so extravagant, and (we want) to make (audience members feel) swept away on our stage.” Both Bulgrien and Huyard are impressed with the cast members, who are journeying from all parts of the county for rehearsals. “We have an amazing cast that is so talented, we are breezing through rehearsals,” said Bulgrien. “(The cast members) are so connected to the script.” Huyard added that the cast members are well-suited to the material. “It is one of the most well-rounded and talented casts we’ve had,” said Huyard, who commented that “My Fair Lady” has a style that sets it apart from other shows. “The music is fun and different, as is the story arc,” he said. “The costumes and the sets are unique so that it stands out among other shows.” Huyard added that the Cavod presentation of the play will be family-friendly. “(‘My Fair Lady’) will be great for all ages from little children through adults,” he said. “I think everyone can relate to her story of … achieving through a lot of hard work.” Tickets, which are discounted for students age 17 and under, may be purchased in advance at www.CavodAcademy.com or by calling 717-351-3355 on Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tickets may be available at the door for a higher price.

Victory Baptist To Stage Christmas Play written by college student Daniel Mawson Jr., the son of pastor Daniel Mawson Sr., and it features a cast composed of church members. “The (idea) behind the play is what if Jesus had never come, explained assistant pastor Drew Haye. “It’s almost like ‘It’s a Wonderful Life.’ When (Daniel) wrote it, he had some folks that go to our church in mind. He approached them, and they agreed to (performing in) it. In addition to the dialogue, the production will feature a variety of Christmas music. “The choir will sing about five numbers or so, and we have a kids’ choir that is singing and an instrumental group that will play as well, said Haye. “There will be some traditional Christmas carols that people will recognize and some (lesser-known) Christmasthemed music. Approximately 60 church members are involved in the production, including the actors, singers, musicians and crew members. “A lot of people pitch in and help out; it’s wonderful, Haye said. Victory Baptist Church presents a Christmas play each holiday season. Last year, the church staged “Christmas at Home, which told the story of a wounded soldier who was trying to get home to spend Christmas with his family. “The timing (of the plays) couldn’t be better. A lot of people have lost the meaning of Christmas, Haye stated. The public is encouraged to attend the upcoming play, whether they belong to a church or not. First-time visitors will receive a special Christmas gift. “Whoever wants to come is welcome. It’s not something you need extensive church background to understand, Haye commented. “It’s a simple

Club Members Attend Owl-Banding Event And More

Members of Twin Valleys Garden Club recently observed owl banding at Rushton Nature Preserve in Willistown Township.

Twin Valleys Garden Club members have attended numerous activities recently, including an owlbanding event, an Ikebana exhibit, and tours. Several members of Twin Valleys Garden Club (TVGC), located in northern Chester County, recently observed owl banding at Rushton Nature Preserve in Willistown Township. The monitoring of northern saw-whet owls (NSWO) is a nocturnal activity whereby members of this small owl species are caught using a system of loudspeakers playing the birds’ calls. The owls are briefly detained in the mist nets surrounding the loudspeakers. The information collected from this process gives scientists information about the cyclical nature of the migratory cycles of this species and their reproductive success. After information is collected, the owls are released. TVGC members also recently traveled to Montgomeryville to attend an exhibit and demonstration of the Sogetsu school of Ikebana. Certified teachers created dramatic floral designs as they

spoke of the thought processes and feelings essential to any Ikebana arrangement. Unlike Western flower shows, Ikebana designs are not judged. Earlier in the fall, TVGC took a day trip to the University of Delaware (UD). The trip included a talk by Dr. Susan Barton, plant and soil sciences faculty member and Extension specialist. The talk, titled “Today’s Woman in the Landscape,” focused on sustainable landscapes. Barton described sustainable landscapes installed on the UD campus and other places in Delaware. Afterward, from local Master Gardeners led TVGC members on a guided visit to UD demonstration gardens surrounding the building. Garden club members then toured the campus gardens and landscape designed by Marian Coffin, an American landscape architect who designed various notable East Coast gardens. Her creations included the gardens of Gibraltar in Wilmington, Del.; the campus plan of UD; the gardens of the Caumsett estate, now Caumsett State Historic Park; and the gardens of Winterthur, Del. Carrie Murphy, UD Extension agent, led the tour. An active group of gardening enthusiasts, TVGC meets at midday on the second Wednesday of each month.
