t’s all about keeping (youths) busy,” said Chester County 4-H Extension educator Audrey Reith, when describing the new Chesco Outdoor Club. Since its formation, club members have taken part in hikes at local parks and held their first organized activity - an outdoor cooking event that took place on Dec. 3 at the Romano 4-H Center in Honey Brook. During the program, participants
“I
made a campfire and prepared a meal that included fresh vegetables like potatoes and carrots. Some youths also made hot dogs and other food items they brought from home. While some items like sweet potatoes were wrapped in foil and placed directly on the fire, most of the food was cooked using buddy burners, which the youths made with the help of 4-H volunteer Susan Johnson. Also known as a hobo stove, a buddy burner is a portable stove

made from a large aluminum can. Using can openers, the youths made holes in the sides of the cans to allow the smoke to escape. They filled smaller cans with corrugated cardboard and paraffin wax and placed these under the larger cans as a heat source. “We recycled large coffee cans. One of our 4-H alumni owns a diner and donated the cans,” noted Reith. “They could use the buddy burners, which they made, (to cook their food) or cook over the campfire.”
The community is welcome to attend a Christmas concert that will be presented by the Lan-Chester Chorus on Monday, Dec. 19, at 7:30 p.m. at Tel Hai Retirement Community. The theme of the concert is “Peace, Love and Joy.” The program, which is part of the Tel Hai Performing Arts Series, will be held at StoneCroft, located on

the Tel Hai campus at 4000 Tree Line Drive, Honey Brook. Parking will be available adjacent to the entrance. A variety of Christmas music will be featured. “(Audiences) will be hearing both sacred and holiday music,” said Joan Esworthy, who has been a member of the chorus for more than 20 years. The selections may include “All Is Quiet,” “The Holiday Tango,” “Irving Berlin’s Christmas,” “Almost There,” “The First Noel” and “Like a River in My Soul.” “It’s all four-part harmonies (with) alto, bass, tenor and soprano,” said Esworthy, noting that the chorus got its name from the fact that its members are from both Lancaster and Chester counties. The chorus, founded in
1950, has been performing for more than 70 years. The current director is Kimberly Kusnersyk, and the accompanist is Christine Smith. The chorus performs at local retirement communities, including Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community and Harrison House in Christiana, as well as other venues, such as Longwood Gardens and the Brandywine River Museum. The group has also performed several times at the White House for Christmas and at the Kennedy Center. For many years, the chorus presented Saturday evening concerts at the Music Pier in Ocean City, N.J. “ We performed for a Christmas tree lighting ceremony at the state capitol in

After a delicious holiday meal, there is a good chance guests will be looking forward to a sweet treat. Many families have their go-to desserts on special occasions, but holiday meals can be made even more memorable, and flavorful, by taking a chance on new recipes. A decadent cheesecake is on the menu in many Italian American families. Italian cheesecake does not typically contain cream cheese or graham cracker crust. Rather, Italian cheesecakes are full of citrus flavor and made with

Meet Ruby: Available For Adoption Ruby, who was rescued by Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue (LDAR), is looking for her forever home. She is young and had a hard life. Her eye was infected and had to be removed in an extensive eye surgery but she has since recovered and is healing well.
In July, Ruby delivered six kittens in an animal hoarding home and was surrendered to a high-kill shelter the next day. At the shelter, Ruby and her entire family were immediately timestamped for euthanasia. LDAR was able to rescue her and her family less
than 24 hours before their time ran out. Through the stress of change and illness, Ruby managed to care for her kittens and even accepted an orphaned kitten as one of her own. Her kittens have since been adopted, and it is
now her turn to find her forever family. Through all of these struggles, she remained trusting, gentle and affectionate. Ruby is a very young cat who loves sleeping next to a warm human and is friendly toward cats and dogs if given
proper time to be introduced. She also gives hugs. For more information and to complete an adoption application, visit www.lucky dawganimalrescue.com.

In these events I take the guys through their identity in Christ, where do the lies come from that we buy into, and how we untangle whose lies. I call it, “declawing the lies of the enemy.” I also take the guys through the Big 5 Man-Killers that destroy every man (lack of purpose, lack of respect, anger, lust, and shame), and I do this using the Big 5 African animals tying each one of those struggles to each one of the animals. It’s a powerful way to hold their attention and give them the tools they need to defeat the enemy.

Students also took part in a knife safety program presented by volunteer Paul Sanoski, whose wife, Susan, also volunteered at the event. Reith said the new club, open to youths ages 8 to 18, was formed when members of other 4-H Clubs expressed an interest in outdoor activities. “As an educator, I like listening to what the kids want to do,” said Reith, who is also the leader of the SPARKS 4-H Ag Club in West Grove. “We are looking at not only (visiting) county and state parks, but at other historic sites like local furnaces,” she said, noting that the students are also interested in archery. “We
already hiked at Marsh Creek State Park and Nottingham County Park. It will be totally about outdoor adventures.” For more information about the new Chesco Outdoor Club, including details about upcoming events, contact the Penn State Extension Chester County office at ChesterExt@psu.edu or 610696-3500 or email Reith at alr5762@psu.edu. Toy Buying Tips
Route 10 Roadside Market, LLC
Shopping for gifts for children makes many shoppers nostalgic for their own childhoods as few adults can forget the joy of finding the perfect gift under the tree on Christmas morning. Recreating that magic for a youngster can be as joyous for gift givers as it is for kids, but shoppers should keep several tips in mind to ensure they give toys that are as safe as they are fun. When buying for a grandchild, niece, or nephew, shoppers should first ask the child’s parent or guardian for suggestions. These people will know which types of toys their children like, and they will also know each child’s maturity level. Some kids may not be mature enough to

play with otherwise ageappropriate toys, while others may be mature beyond their years and enjoy more complex toys than their age would suggest. Toy labels are good sources of information, but shoppers must know what to look for. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) notes that toy labels include information about age-appropriateness (such as “Ages 3 and Up”) as well as directions regarding how to use the toy. If the instructions seem a bit complex for the child the item will be for, look for something else. Children’s toy labels also include information that consumers may not be familiar with. For example, toys labeled “ASTM F963” meet the latest safety

standards from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. An “ASTM D4236” label indicates the materials associated with an art toy have been reviewed and deemed safe by a toxicologist. More information about toy label requirements can be found at www.cpsc.gov. The AAP advises that electric toys should only be given to children if they include the UL label, which indicates that the toy has been certified by the global safety certification company UL. The AAP notes that toys that are loud, shoot objects into the air or contain small pieces pose a threat to children. Toys that are too loud can damage children’s hearing, and projectiles can increase the risk of eye
Safety Tips For Electric Devices The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has created a new micromobility device safety webpage in response to concerns fire officials have about fires caused by lithium-ion batteries that power electric bikes and electric scooters (e-bikes and e-scooters). injuries or choking. Toys with small pieces also pose a choking risk to young children who may try to put the pieces into their mouths. Consumers who are uncertain about the safety of a given toy, even after reading its label, should err on the side of caution and only give toys they are confident will not pose a safety risk. Even toys that may seem safe could be dangerous to kids who might otherwise seem old enough. For example, the AAP advises against giving children under age 12 hobby kits and chemistry sets. That is because such kits may contain dangerous chemicals that even pre-adolescents are not old enough to handle safely.
features information about why e-bikes and e-scooters catch fire, what some jurisdictions are doing to better regulate that risk, and what people can do to stay safe if they use, store, or charge ebikes or e-scooters. To help prevent fires, individuals should only purchase and use devices, batteries, and charging equipment that are listed by a nationally recognized testing lab and labeled accordingly. Only the battery and the charger that were designed for and came with the device should be used. Charging the device should not be continued after the battery is fully charged. Ebikes, e-scooters, and batteries should be stored away from exit doors and anything that can get hot or catch fire. Owners should discontinue using the e-bike or e-scooter if they notice any problems with the battery, including an unusual odor, a change in color, too much heat, a change in shape, leaking, smoking, or not keeping a charge. Lithium-ion batteries should not be put in the trash and should be taken to a battery recycling location or disposed of using another appropriate method as directed by the local waste department. Devices should only be repaired by a qualified professional. For more safety information about e-bikes and escooters and to download the free safety tip sheet, visit www.nfpa.org/ebikes.

Anti-littering Youth Contest Posted Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful will sponsor the Litter Hawk Youth Award Program, a recognition program for students in kindergarten through grade six who complete a designated project specific to their grade level. Students can participate individually or as part of a lesson initiated by schools, homeschools, Scout troops, 4H clubs, environmental clubs, or other organized groups. The Litter Hawk Youth
Award Program is a way for kids to share their hope, optimism, and concerns about litter and to inspire others to care for their communities through art, words, or video. In response to Pennsylvania’s new anti-littering education campaign, PA Fights Dirty: Every Litter Bit Matters, the theme is “Show Us How Every Litter Bit Matters to You.” Projects include a poster for children in kindergarten
through grade four and an essay or video for children in grades five and six. The deadline to participate is Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2023. Two entries will be selected as winners in each grade level. The winner and the runner-up will receive a gift card as a prize. All participants will receive certificates. Winners will be announced in April in time for Earth Day celebrations.

Dr. Joseph F. Hagan Jr., a clinical professor of pediatrics at Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont, said that helping others during the toddler and preschool years helps to shape a child’s sense of morality. Adults should focus on finding the right activity to match a child’s age. For example, a 3- or 4-year-old can fill bags or boxes with donated food or help gather blankets and towels to donate to an animal rescue. However, a toddler or preschooler may not have the stamina to complete a 5K walk. Volunteerism does not even have to be carried out in the traditional sense of working with an established charity. A youngster can pick flowers and deliver them to an elderly neighbor. A preschooler can invite a child playing alone to
come play together with him or her. A toddler who loves sorting items can help sort recycling items at home and watch a parent deliver them to the recycling center. Another way to engage kids in volunteer work is to match their interests with the tasks. Many kids cannot get enough of animals, so they may want to help an animal organization or be involved with a conservation group. A child can collect change to “adopt” an endangered species. Kids also can visit a children’s hospital and deliver gifts to youngsters battling illnesses. In such situations, children may be more engaged if they can help others their own age. Children can begin volunteering at a young age, and finding the right fit can inspire a lifetime of giving back.
