Turkey Bowl Has A Successful Run On Thanksgiving Morning By Francine Fulton

Nearly 400 participants turned out for the 28th annual Turkey Bowl held on Thanksgiving morning at Tel Hai Camp and Retreat in Honey Brook. This year’s runners and walkers had to brave blustery conditions. “Despite the wind, we had 389 participants this year,” said camp director Bruce Gregory. “Some runners commented how windy it was around the lake, but they otherwise enjoyed the race.” The Turkey Bowl, which included a 5K race, as well as a 1-mile fun run for children, attracted local residents and those from out of town who were visiting relatives in the area. “As is the case each year, we had many local runners as well as participants from all over the country from Florida to Maine and from New Jersey to Colorado, usually in visiting family nearby,” said Gregory. “We had great showing from Honey Brook and surrounding towns as well and many families that have made this a tradition.”

He noted that the youngest registered participant this year was age 3 and ran with her parents, and the oldest was 76. In the 10th year for the course, the top overall male winner was Noah Taylor from Mohnton, with a time of 17 minutes, 29 seconds. The top overall female winner was Samantha Bingaman from Ocean City, Md., with a time of 20:41. “We had 306 finishers in the 5K race,” Gregory noted. Noah, 16, is a junior at Twin Valley High School (TVHS), where he competes in cross-country and indoor track. It was his first appearance in the Tel Hai Turkey Bowl. His twin brother, Iain, also completed the 5K, finishing third overall. “I just wanted to have fun with it and see what happened,” Noah said. “I didn’t think about (winning) until halfway through when there was no one around me.” Noah received a large trophy as a reward for his win. Other competitors in the 5K were the Johnson See Turkey Bowl pg 5

Among those who received encouragement from the Tel Hai Turkey Bowl mascot as they took part in the Tel Hai Turkey Bowl on Thanksgiving morning were (from left) Colbie Pyle, Alli Gregory, Gunner Pyle, Candace Pyle and Emme Gregory.

Young Skater Is A Success On Wheels Girl Scout Makes Improvements By Francine Fulton

Even though she is only 6 years old, Julia Bellocchio of Birdsboro is already an accomplished roller skater. She recently earned a gold medal in freestyle skating and a silver medal in compulsory figures in her age division during the USA Roller Sport Winter Invitational competition held at Fantasy Skating Center in Reading on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1. Julia began skating a little over a year ago by taking classes at Fantasy, including free Learn-to-Skate classes held on Saturdays. “She started skating at age 5 and has come a long way

in 15 months,” said Julia’s grandmother, Lita Bellocchio. “She is part of the Junior Skate Club and gets private lessons with a fantastic coach at Fantasy.” Julia recalled her first time on roller skates. “I walked for two seconds and then I fell. It wasn’t easy to get up,” said Julia, who also recently took up the sport of ice skating as well. “(Roller skating) is easier than ice skating,” she noted. Freestyle skating incorporates jumps, spins and footwork into a program set to music. In figures, skaters must follow circles that are drawn on to the floor. They are judged on the quality of their line tracing, their body position and other criteria. See Skater pg 13

At Honey Brook Library By Francine Fulton

Jamie Fox, 12, a member of Girl Scout Troop 1516 in the Twin Valley Service Unit, recently completed her Silver Award project by making improvements at the Honey Brook Community Library. The Silver Award is the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn. Although the Silver Award requires the Girl Scout to work on the project for a minimum of 50 hours, Jamie, a student at Twin Valley Middle School, spent nearly 75 hours and many months to complete the project. She was responsible for all aspects of the project, including writing a proposal, acquiring materials, completing the work and writing a follow-up report See Girl Scout pg 7

Each year, the dinner features a guest speaker who was helped by the ORT organization. “This year, our speaker was Nichole, a

local cancer patient who was diagnosed with uterine cancer with metastasis to the lungs last year. We were able to help her pay bills,” Murphy noted. Murphy founded the ministry after losing his wife, Beth, to breast cancer in 2009. He explained that the name of the organization refers to the 5K runs that are held by ORT throughout the year, along with other fundraisers. The charity’s motto is “OneRunTogether - so no one fights cancer alone.” “We are a nonprofit organization based in Coatesville that helps local cancer patients in Berks and Chester counties,” Murphy said. “We assist them with paying bills like rent, mortgage, utilities, car payments, taxes and child care, just to name a few. We started in August 2011 and have given over 360 grants. We also visit the patients we help, give them a Bible and pray with them.” Those who wish to apply to receive funds while undergoing treatment may complete an application at

www.oneruntogether.org by clicking on Patient Grant Application. ORT’s board of directors reviews all applications, which must be signed and submitted by an oncologist or a certified professional. After an application is approved, bills are submitted for direct payment. ORT holds various fundraising events throughout the year. Events held in 2019 included the Creamery Hustle 5K and 1-mile walk held at Penn State Berks in Reading, the nighttime Glow Run 5K held at Honeybrook Golf Club and the annual “Hard to the Core” 5K Mud Run at Weaver’s Orchard in Morgantown. The group also sells pumpkin rolls in November to raise funds. For more information about ORT or to donate, readers may visit www.oneruntogether.org or www.facebook.com/onerun together. Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, will host its annual Lantern Tours on Thursday to Sunday, Dec. 26 through 29. Tours will begin every half-hour from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The setting for the role-playing Lantern Tours will be a fellowship meal held to welcome immigrants who arrived at the Ephrata Cloister in 1751. Though the event is focused on fellowship, not everyone welcomes these strangers with open arms. The Lantern Tours are presented by the Student Historians, a group of high school volunteers who bring history to life. Guests will be invited to help re-enact history by playing the part of the new immigrants. Two visitors will have the opportunity to play Hendrich Lohman and Jacob Kimmel, the leaders of the 1751 group. See Lantern Tours pg 3

The PSP works closely with local, state and federal law enforcement partners to investigate fraud and scams. Consumers are reminded to be cautious when sharing financial and other sensitive information this holiday season. Common scams include fake charities, phony websites and Social Security fraud. Anyone can contact the DoBS at 800-PA-BANKS or 800-722-2657 to ask questions or file complaints about financial transactions, companies or products. In the spirit of the holiday season, the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) reminds Pennsylvanians that they are welcome to give to programs that support the commonwealth’s veterans, active-duty military personnel, and their families. Pennsylvanians can contribute to any of four key programs administered by the DMVA. The four tax-deductible programs administered by the DMVA are Military Family Relief Assistance Program (MFRAP), Veterans’ Trust Fund (VTF), Residents’ Welfare Funds, and Pennsylvania Veterans’ Memorial Trust Fund. The MFRAP provides financial assistance, in the form of grants, to eligible Pennsylvania service members and their eligible family members who have an immediate financial need based on circumstances beyond their control. This program is made possible by generous donations from taxpayers who designate all or part of their Pennsylvania Personal Income Tax refund to support Pennsylvania military personnel and their families and by those who donate online or privately by mail.

West Chester University (WCU) volleyball players have opened their arms and their hearts to welcome 10-year-old Eva Nelson of Parkesburg. On Nov. 22, she was officially drafted onto the team during a ceremony at WCU. Eva, the daughter of Melissa and Michael Nelson, has cystic fibrosis, a progressive respiratory disease that can affect other organs as well as the lungs. In the lungs, mucus becomes thick and sticky, clogging the airways

and trapping germs, which may lead to infections, inflammation and other complications and limits the ability to breathe. Not too long ago, it was unusual for a child with cystic fibrosis to live past age 12, but today’s treatments and medications have made great advancements so that the typical life span reaches to the 30s and is increasing. The connection between Eva and the volleyball team was made through Team Impact, a nationwide, nonprofit organization that connects children

In a small bowl, scramble egg. Open and remove the wrapping (not the white rind) and dip into egg mixture. Coat the brie evenly with Panko breadcrumbs, pressing crumbs into brie. Roll ends in breadcrumbs as well. Set aside. Drizzle medium-sized pan with olive oil and heat over medium-high heat until oil is hot. Place brie in pan and fry for several minutes until the breadcrumbs are golden brown. With brie up on its end, gradually rotate brie until ends are cooked, then flip over and cook the other side. Remove from heat and set on serving board. Heat apricot preserves in a pan on low heat (or microwave for 30 seconds at a time). Stir in diced apricots. Tips For Making Gingerbread Houses Gingerbread cookies and houses are one of the many symbols of the holiday season, alongside Christmas trees and twinkling lights. In fact, few confections symbolize the holidays more so than gingerbread. Many a child - or a child at heart - has spent hours carefully trying to create decorative gingerbread houses. Although gingerbread recipes span various cultures, gingerbread houses originated in 16th-century Germany. The fairy tale “Hansel and Gretel” helped solidify the popularity of gingerbread, which became part of Christmas traditions. Even though gingerbread houses can be fun to make, there is no denying it can be exacting work, especially for those who strive for perfection. Prepackaged kits attempt to take some of the guesswork out of the equation, but those who are crafting from scratch can employ several tips as they build their gingerbread houses. It is important to go for form and not flavor. Few gingerbread houses ever get eaten, so focus on finding a dough that will bake up rock hard as opposed to one that tastes good. The right icing texture is also important. Pastry artist Catherine Beddall says royal icing is the preferred “glue” to adhere gingerbread pieces. Beddall says icing should be thick like peanut

butter and not runny. The gingerbread dough should not be rolled out too thin or it may become brittle after being cooked. Shapes should always be cut out before the gingerbread is baked. Baked pieces should be allowed to sit overnight to cool completely before using them to build. Patience is key. The icing should be allowed to dry for at least a couple of hours after adhering each piece and before moving and handling the house. Working in stages allows individual items to be decorated and dried. The walls can be put together, followed by the roof pieces. Children likely will need help. Children may not have the patience or steadiness to handle complete gingerbread construction. They can decorate the separate pieces of the house while the components are lying flat, which is easier for children. Adults can do the main assembly later on. It is recommended that a template be utilized. Free-handing may not be easy. Templates can be made using cardboard or poster board for various gingerbread pieces. One of the most important tips is to have fun. Individuals should not take making a gingerbread house too seriously as a novice. Rather, enjoy the experience and the centuries-old tradition.

Emma Lessick from Troop 1441 and Louisa Cihlar from Troop 1516 were on Jamie’s project team. The girls were supervised by Ted Lessick, who helped with the construction work. The improvements were approved by Jennifer Spade, Honey Brook Community Library director. As part of the Silver Award project, Jamie installed a new display wall inside the library where library staff members can place information about community events or library promotions. “When you first walk in, it’s on

the right,” Jamie explained. The project also included making improvements in the library’s rear entryway. New pressure-treated lumber was added to replace broken and untreated two-by-fours and support beams. The new boards are designed to limit snow and ice accumulation inside the entryway. A new light fixture was added, as well as caulk and fresh paint to the walls and ceiling. “One improvement that I am most proud of is making an area to store the garbage cans. They would always blow over,” said Jamie. She noted that the cans were kept unsecured in the rear entryway, and the cans would often end up along the walkway

on windy days. “My team and I also removed four old overgrown bushes, installed a paver patio, and (installed) an outdoor garbage bin enclosure on top of the patio,” added Jamie. “The hardest part was trying to get rid of the bushes because they were (deeply) rooted in the ground.” The handicapped-access ramp was also improved. Jamie painted the sides of the ramp bright yellow. Using stencils, she also spray painted “watch your step” in bright yellow on each side of the ramp. A new sign was also installed for the handicappedaccessible parking spot. Those who contributed to the Silver Award project included the following: Chester County Solid Waste Authority, Deck Craft Plus, Hannum Home Services, Home Depot, Honey Brook Community Partnership (HBCP), John’s Supply and Rental, Lanchester Auto Body and Equipment Rental, Lowe’s Home Improvement and Sauders Hardscape Supply. Scout Completes Project At Lindley Hill Cemetery

ARRIVING LATE?

By Francine Fulton

Seeking to preserve an important part of local history, Warren Pixley, a member of Lionville Boy Scout Troop 216, has completed restoration efforts at Lindley Hill Cemetery in Downingtown as his required Eagle Scout service project. The cemetery, which was established in 1851, is one of the oldest African American cemeteries in Chester County. It is the final resting place of many soldiers from the Civil War, as well as World Wars I and II. The cemetery is owned by Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church (AMEC) of Downingtown. Thanks to Warren’s efforts, as well as those of his fellow Scouts, the cemetery is almost completely restored, graves are mapped and only a few headstones are waiting to be repaired. After funds were raised to purchase needed materials, the project included hundreds of hours of manual labor that took place over the course of a year. Warren said he learned of the cemetery from the Rev. Richard Lackey, pastor of Bethel AMEC, See Lindley Hill pg 8

Lindley Hill from pg 7 As part of his Eagle Scout service project, Warren Pixley and his fellow Scouts removed debris, mapped the graves and restored headstones at the Lindley Hill Cemetery in Downingtown, one of the oldest African American burial grounds in Chester County, where soldiers from various conflicts are buried.

Warren Pixley completed restoration work at Lindley Hill Cemetery, an African American burial ground in Downingtown, as his Eagle Scout service project.

When asked what the most difficult part of the project was, Warren replied, “Planning was the most challenging. There were so many moving parts - getting the repairs together, making sure we have everything we needed all the logistics.” Warren, a junior at Downingtown High School East, is currently completing the requirements necessary to earn the Eagle Scout honor, including finalizing his written report about the service project and earning the appropriate merit badges. He hopes to have his Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony by the end of his junior year. The event will be held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Lionville, where the troop meets.

who contacted the troop about the work that needed to be done at the cemetery. “The project was appealing because I like history so much,” Warren stated. Warren explained that the cemetery is situated near the Woodmont condominiums located off Route 113. “The driveway is on Hollow Lane; (the cemetery) is hidden within trees,” he noted. Warren discussed the scope of the project with the pastor during a meeting held at the church. When visiting the site, the Scouts discovered ground that was covered with dead trees, brush that had grown nearly three feet high, trash, debris and broken headstones. “ We started off by cutting down trees and removing branches,” Warren explained. “We had one of our local tree removal guys mulch them up for us. Then, we had to mow a lot of the areas and weed-whack. It’s a small cemetery, but a lot of the gravestones are hidden. “We are currently working on getting some tombstone work done for the some of the gravestones by a local monument company,” he continued. “We composed a diagram of the all the gravestones there and who was (buried at) each of them - at least, the ones we could read.” Warren held a car wash to raise funds for materials. “We used that money for a lot of the tools we needed, fuel for the weed-whackers and lawn mowers and gloves and eye protection so all the workers were safe,” he said. He said that while the group completed tasks in the cemetery, every effort was made by the Scouts to work in a reverent manner. “There’s a lot of history in the cemetery because it’s so old and so sacred,” Warren stated. “There were so many graves there of the dead soldiers, so we had to be respectful while working in there.”

International Conventions in Atlantic City, N.J., and Washington, D.C. The group has sung the national anthem many times for the Philadelphia Phillies and Lancaster Barnstormers baseball teams. For many years, the chorus presented Saturday evening concerts at the Music Pier in Ocean City, N.J. “We don’t do that much traveling anymore. Most of our things are fairly local,” Esworthy said. The chorus frequently performs at retirement communities, bringing familiar tunes as well as new musical numbers to the residents. During the 2019 Christmas season, the chorus’ schedule includes performances at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community, Harrison House in Christiana, Tel Hai Retirement Community in Honey Brook and Cochranville Methodist Church as well as the annual concert for the community at the

Christiana Fire Hall. As a special way to mark the chorus’ 70th anniversary, former members have been invited to return and sing with the group at the Christmas concert in Christiana. “We’re doing a lot of the numbers they did in past years,” Esworthy said. Currently, there are 25 to 30 mixed voices in the chorus. Residents of Chester and Lancaster counties are welcome to join the group, which meets on Mondays at 7 p.m. at the Christiana Fire Company. “We rehearse in the fall for our Christmas concerts, then we take a winter break and don’t pick up until the spring,” Esworthy said. Toys play a pivotal role in the lives of young children. While fun is always a consideration when buying toys for children, toys can do more than entertain. The National Association for the Education of Young Children notes that toys for young children should match the youngsters’ stages of development and their emerging abilities. W hen those matches are made, children’s imagination and coordination will develop, all while they are having fun. Safety is another factor adults must take seriously when buying toys for children. Unfortunately, safety is not always foremost on the minds of toy shoppers. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission notes that more than 251,000 toy-related injuries were treated in American hospital emergency rooms in 2017. Thankfully, such injuries are almost always avoidable, especially when shoppers follow a handful of safety strategies when buying toys for young children. Adults should avoid purchasing toys with lots of pieces. Toddlers and small children tend to put things in their mouths, increasing their risk of choking as a result. When buying toys for toddlers or small children, avoid toys with small parts that can be choking hazards. Parents should pay attention to age recommendations on packaging. Age guidelines on toy packages are designed to ensure that children play with toys suited for their age and abilities. Children are more likely to enjoy playing with toys designed for children their age, and these toys are less likely than age-inappropriate toys to put youngsters’ safety in jeopardy. It is important to recognize even stuffed animals can present safety hazards. Stuffed animals may not appear to pose as safety risks, but poorly made stuffed animals may have small parts that can easily come off. Make sure any small parts on stuffed animals, such as eyes and buttons, are securely fastened before making any purchases. Children should be taught how to use toys. When giving children advanced toys, adults should take the time to show the youngsters how to use them. Such demonstrations can clear up any confusion about the toys, reducing children’s risk for injury as a result.

2 . Heat the remaining halftablespoon oil in the same frying pan set over medium heat. When hot, add the chorizo and stir until lightly browned, 3 minutes. Remove and set aside. (Chorizo can be prepared 1 hour ahead; leave at room temperature.) 3 . Trim and discard 2 to 3 inches of the tough bases of the asparagus spears. Add the asparagus and 1 teaspoon salt to a large frying pan filled halfway with simmering water. Cook until the spears are just tender, 4 minutes. Drain and toss the asparagus in a large bowl with the butter and lemon juice. Season with salt and cover with foil. 4. Bring a large frying pan filled halfway with water to a boil. Add the vinegar and gently break each egg into a saucer and slide it into the water. Swirl the water with a wooden spoon while the eggs are cooking. Cook until the eggs are just set but the yolks are still soft, 3 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain well. (If you have an egg poacher, cook according to the manufacturer’s directions until the eggs are set.) 5. Mound some asparagus spears on each of four dinner plates. Top each serving with a poached egg and sprinkle with the chorizo and bread crumbs. Season the eggs with several grinds of pepper and a pinch of salt and serve. Cooking tip: To make bread crumbs, use a 1- to 2-day-old, good-quality peasant or country bread with crusts removed. Process large chunks of it in a food processor to make coarse crumbs. Sourdough bread works particularly well.

Last year, PennDOT spent nearly $13 million cleaning up roadside litter across Pennsylvania. In addition, nearly 5,000 volunteers spend countless hours participating in the Adopt-A-Highway program each year. These dollars and volunteer hours could have otherwise been spent on delivering a better transportation network and making Pennsylvania a better state in which to live. In addition to a public health hazard and eyesore, the litter along Pennsylvania’s roads is an environmental problem, degrading soil, water, and wildlife.

The recent competition was the first time that Julia has competed in figures during a competition. Lita said that the sport is a great physical activity for children and does not have to be an expensive hobby because equipment and skating outfits can be purchased from consignment sales or from other skaters. “Like any sport, the benefit to the children is much more than just skating,” Lita said. “It teaches other skills, friendships and what it means to be a part of a group.” Julia has competed in the 8 and under and the youth development divisions but will gradually move up through the ranks. “Each of these groups has to be able to do certain skills to the music,” explained Lita. “One of the moves is putting her leg up, which called an arabesque. “ Another move is when a skater glides on one foot while kicking the other foot completely forward. This sitting spin is called “shoot the duck.” W hen asked which move is harder, Julia replied, “None are hard.” Julia recently completed an advanced move for the first time. “She did a 360-degree jump and turn, and she will learn a few more skills,” Lita said. “We look forward to good things as she grows.”

spent with the college volleyball team. “It’s fun to learn and make more friends,” Eva said. Eva was referred to Team Impact by her social worker at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. “The horseback riding and the archery, they’re individual sports. We wanted to get her involved in things where she was part of a team - something where she’s involved with other kids,” Melissa said, explaining that her daughter had little exposure to volleyball prior to this experience with WCU. “When Team Impact is pairing you with a sport, we fill out with all kinds of paperwork. It may not be something you have done before. But she loved it. She loves going to the practices now.” As a part of the team, Eva does more than just watch the team play. “They make a commitment to not only to have these kids participate at practices, but to do other things as well. They help these kids develop higher selfesteem and self-worth to see that they can participate in things that their illness might not otherwise allow them to do,” Melissa said. “They set her up with skills sessions. She’ll do one for 15 or 20 minutes, and they will have

That way she’s not engaged with the whole team at one time,” Melissa explained. Eva has been joining the team for practice about once a week since the beginning of the school year. Already, Melissa has seen a positive impact on her daughter. “They’ve really made an effort at making her comfortable,” she said. “She gets so excited to go to the games.” For Eva, there are also physical

benefits of the activity. “She’s able to participate, though she does get tired,” Melissa said. “The more she exercises and the more she does activities, she’s working on her lung function.” Melissa is also pleased with the personal relationships the WCU student-athletes are building with Eva. “I was very impressed. For them to take time out of their own schedules to do this, they’re all committed to it,” she said. For more information on Team Impact, readers may visit www.goteamimpact.org.

Winter Safety from pg 12 who are typically inactive. If someone must exercise in cold weather, they should remember to stretch beforehand. It is important to take breaks when shoveling or ask for help. 3. Carbon monoxide alarms should be checked to see if they are working properly. Every year in the United States, more than 400 people die from carbon monoxide poisoning and 50,000 are treated for it. Exhaust from improperly vented heating appliances can contribute to carbon monoxide sickness. 4 . A winter emergency kit should be prepared and kept in the car in case the driver is stranded in inclement weather.

The kit can include food, water, blankets, first-aid supplies, flares, and booster cables, among other items. 5. Appropriate clothing for the temperature and precipitation should be worn. Layers can be added or removed as needed. 6. Sand or cat litter should be sprinkled on icy patches of walkways to improve traction. Sand or cat litter is easier on the environment than some chemical ice melt products. 7. A whole-house generator should be considered as an emergency backup if the power goes out in winter. Generators can keep the heat running and the refrigerator humming along until

Giving to charity is a selfless act that is worthy of recognition. That recognition can come in many forms, and donors should know that even the “tax man” likes to reward men and women who donate to charity. The United States rewards donors with tax credits. The financial services firm H&R Block notes that, in the United States, taxpayers can deduct donations made to qualified charities. Such deductions must be itemized, but they can greatly reduce a person’s taxable income. Laws regarding donations and tax deductions can be difficult to understand, so donors should always discuss their donations with their financial planners or tax preparers before filing their returns. Some general information regarding donations and deductions that can be useful to prospective donors follows. In the United States, donations must go to one of three types of

groups in order to qualify for deductions. Donations made to nonprofit religious groups, nonprofit educational groups, and nonprofit charitable groups, which are often referred to as 501(c)(3) organizations, may qualify for deductions. Noncash donations are also eligible for deductions in the United States. In most instances in the United States, charitable organizations

power is restored. 8. People should exercise caution with space heaters and other supplemental heating devices. They should be turned off when people leave the room, and they should not be left on overnight while people are sleeping. 9. Drivers should slow down when driving in the snow. Black ice patches can be difficult to see, and snow itself can reduce tire traction. Drivers should leave extra time to get where they need to be. 10. Individuals should consider switching from gloves to mittens. With fingers touching each other inside mittens, they help generate more body heat than when they are inside gloves. must provide donors with certain information in order for donations to be deducted. A receipt that indicates the organization’s name and address and the date and location of the donation must be submitted. In addition, it must include the amount of the donation when donating cash or, in the case of noncash donations, a reasonably detailed description of the items donated. Donating to charity is a selfless endeavor that may lead to rewards when donors file their tax returns.

Extension Offers Produce Safety Education Programs With funding from USDA NIFA award number 2017-7002027236, Penn State Extension educators from the Food Safety and Horticulture teams developed bilingual produce safety educational materials and delivered trainings to Latino fresh produce growers and farmworkers in Pennsylvania. Maria Gorgo-Gourovitch was the principal investigator of the grant. Other members of the team were Megan Chawner, Tara Baugher, Jeffrey Stoltzfus, Don Seifrit, Christi Graver, professor of food science Dr. Luke LaBorde, and now retired extension educator Lee Stivers. Congress entrusted the FDA to implement the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). This new law changed the food safety system from one that responds to contamination to one that aims to prevent it in the first place. Among the suite of new regulations issued under the law is “Standards for the Growing, Harvesting, Packing, and Holding of Produce for Human Consumption” (USFDA, 2013), commonly known as the Produce Safety Rule. The Produce Safety Rule poses new regulatory challenges to the fresh produce industry in Pennsylvania and across the country. Latino growers and farmworkers had an unmet need for accessible Food Safety and Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) information, education, and resources. In order to provide short, easy-to-understand information, the Extension focused its educational materials and trainings on topics such as

The Extension team began by collecting, assessing, and archiving pre-existing educational materials related to FSMA and Farm Food Safety education available at the Penn State website. Team members identified gaps in programming in regard to content and methodology. As a result, 10

articles and two fact sheets were translated. The team reviewed and updated the Food Safety Training Kit and the GAP posters to match new public service announcement curricula and created a catalog of available information in English and Spanish. With support from stakeholders, the Extension determined where the greatest needs in programming were and then developed new educational materials

and workshops specific to various industry groups. The team created a number of innovative, new food safety (GAPs) outreach, education, and training programs in English and Spanish, including 11 trainings and professional development with a total of 24 presentations. Winter begins on Saturday, Dec. 21, and extends to Thursday, March 19, 2020, in the Northern Hemisphere. Those three months can be both beautiful to behold and difficult to endure. Winter has its share of safety hazards, and extra effort may be required to protect one’s health and well-being when the chill creeps in. In recognition of that, the National Safety Council and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offer these winter safety tips. 1. Homes should be winterized to keep interior temperatures comfortable and prevent weatherrelated damage. Winterizing includes insulating water lines that run along exterior walls, cleaning out gutters, installing weather stripping, and replenishing insulation. 2. Exercise in cold temperatures can put many people at risk of heart attack - especially those who are typically inactive. If someone must exercise in cold weather, they should remember to stretch beforehand. People should take breaks when shoveling or ask for help. 3. Carbon monoxide alarms should be checked to see if they are working properly. Every year in the United States, more than 400 people die from and 50,000 are treated for carbon monoxide poisoning. Exhaust from improperly vented heating appliances can contribute to carbon monoxide sickness. 4. A winter emergency kit should be prepared and kept in the car in case a car becomes stranded in inclement weather. The kit can include food, water, blankets, first aid supplies, flares, and booster cables, among other items. 5. Individuals should wear appropriate clothing for the temperature and precipitation. Layers can be added or removed as needed. 6. Sand or cat litter can be spread on icy patches of walkways to improve traction. Sand or cat litter is easier on the environment than some chemical ice melt products. 7. Homeowners should consider a whole-house generator as an
