Many people enjoy opening their homes to friends and family. Entertaining can include everything from backyard barbecues to hosting formal dinner parties to providing overnight accommodations. While each of those things is different, hosts always want to ensure their guests are as comfortable as possible, regardless of which style of gathering they are hosting. Hosts can use these seven strategies to help guests feel at home. 1. Consider the details. Does your guest like chocolate covered almonds? Does he or she prefer a certain genre of music? Hosts can take note of the specific details that make the guest tick and then incorporate them into their entertaining plans. 2. Not everyone has a full-fledged guest room, but that does not mean a welcoming and private retreat for guests cannot be created. A home office can be turned into an overnight area with a pull-out couch or even a dressed-up air mattress with high-quality linens. See Holiday Hosting pg 6

State Sen. Andy Dinniman recently announced that Chester County offices and historical societies have received more than $40,000 in funding from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC). East Bradford Township and the Borough of West Chester received funding from the PHMC’s Certified Local Government Grant Program. The Chester County Historical Society received funding through the Historical and Archival Records Care Grants. Dinniman, who serves on the PHMC, said the monies will be used for projects to preserve, maintain and increase the county’s historical resources. The Certified Local Government Grant Program provides support for communities to develop programs and services needed to administer local preservation programs. East Bradford Township was awarded $10,000 to prepare design guidelines based on the State Historic Preservation Office’s guidelines and provide additional guidance on the workbook’s effectiveness in smaller communities. The Borough of West Chester received $25,000 to conduct a historical resources inventory and to create a historic resource atlas. The Historical and Archival Records Care Grants are competitive grants focused on improving the preservation of and accessibility to historically significant records maintained by various organizations and local government facilities. Chester County Historical Society was awarded approximately $7,000. In total, the Certified Local Government Grant Program accepted six projects totaling $135,000. The Historical and Archival Records Care Grants Program awarded 29 projects totaling just above $184,000.

Holiday Celebration Held
Caernarvon Township Park and Recreation Committee sponsored its first community holiday celebration on Dec. 7. The event included Santa, trains, games and snacks. Toys were collected for Tots or Tots. For more information, individuals may search for “Caernarvon Township, Parks and Recreation Committee” on Facebook. Volunteers are always welcome.
Holiday Hosting from pg 4 3. Hosts should try to anticipate guests’ needs and think like a concierge when hosting at home. Hosts should have extra toothbrushes, antiperspirant, mouthwash, and a phone charger at the ready. If the guest is a reader, a few selections should be placed nearby or a book of puzzles so they can stay busy during their downtime. 4. It is important to keep dietary needs in mind. Guests have different palates and preferences, but some may have serious food allergies as well. It is important to ask in advance if any guests have food allergies, so the host can ensure that any meals served are not just delicious, but also safe and healthy. 5. Guests may not be as enamored with pets as their hosts. If you know a
guest has an allergy or an aversion to pets, the animals should be kept away as much as possible. 6. Hosts are encouraged to take a moment and freshen their home by taking inventory of their home in its current state and making some minor improvements. Hosts can add some interior lighting, clean the bathrooms, create some extra seating, and freshen up with some flowers to make for a welcoming environment. 7. A special meal should be prepared. Hosts can strive to give guests a sensational meal they are not likely to forget. This can mean indulging a little with sourced ingredients, home cooking, and a good bottle of wine. Comfort should always be a priority when readying a home for guests.
