Manheim Township

Holidays bring out best in Township residents

Despite its long and storied history, Township’s Holiday Open House is not, in many ways, a traditional holiday celebration.

“(The Holiday Open House) is an enjoyable family event that kicks off the holiday season,” said Harry Norton, the Manheim Township Recreation and Park Planning Department’s adult and family program manager.

“It’s

“It’s a fun, festive family event, and it’s always been that way. It’s a great small feel that creates ambiance. It’s a little more laid back than some of our events. It’s a chance for families to come together and enjoy time together.”

bers of the Manheim Township Fire Rescue squad will also be on hand collecting toys and nonperishable food items for Lancaster Toys for Tots.

The drop-in event is free to attend, and everyone is invited. Cookies, cocoa, coffee and candy canes will be provided free of charge.

to be connected to your community. That really is the reason

The department will host the 45th edition of its annual Holiday Open House from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8, at Stauffer Mansion, 1241 Lititz Pike, Lancaster. Members of the Manheim

“It’s nondenominational,” said Norton. “It’s a celebration of community and family.”

Entertainment-wise, the Holiday Open House will feature a youth program performance by Dance Sations beginning at 1:05 p.m.; sleight of hand, tricks and illusions from Eddy Ray Magic beginning at 1:45 p.m.; and a choral presentation by the Manheim Township High School Troubadours at 2:30 p.m. Santa Claus is expected to arrive at 1:15 p.m., riding on Manheim Township Fire Rescue’s new fire truck.

Lititz Academy of Dance explores talents. The academy’s CoJoMotion Dance Company develops talents. “A Season for Wishes” provides an opportunity for talents to be combined for greater good.

“I hope (the student performers are) learning joy from helping others and taking their God-given talents and doing good for others,” said Lisa Kalinowski, creative director for CoJoMotion Dance Company’s

“A Season for Wishes” show and owner of Lititz Academy of Dance. “I think most of us, and children, think they can’t make a difference. But when you have so many hearts come together for good, miracles can happen. There are so many pieces, and everyone has their role. I can’t believe it’s been 20 years. That’s a lot of miracles.”

Lititz Academy of Dance’s CoJoMotion Dance Company will present its 20th annual “A Season for Wishes” performance on Saturday, Dec. 14, at 6 p.m.

Service clubs can be like social clubs.

Service clubs promote camaraderie and fellowship and create colleagues and collaborators. Throw in a little time, and those relationships can develop into friendships.

Lancaster Lions Club (LLC) is one of the oldest organized service clubs in Lancaster County.

“We have a lot of members who have been there a very long time,” said Bill Crabtree, a 40-year Lion who’s currently in his second term as LLC’s president. “So we’ve gotten to know each other

at Lancaster Mennonite High School’s High Fine Arts Center, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. Tickets can be purchased online prior to the show by searching for “CoJoMotion Dance Company” on Facebook or at the door beginning at 5:30 p.m. on the day of the event. All proceeds raised from the event will be donated to Make-AWish Philadelphia, Delaware and the Susquehanna Valley.

“We always say it is the most joyous kickoff to the holidays imaginable,” said Kalinowski. “It’s so celebratory. It’s family, friendship and coming together. It’s doing God’s work in the best way possible.”

The two-and-a-half-hour performance will feature a huge holiday dance extravaganza presented by 40 members of CoJoMotion Dance Company, fabulous sounds of the season, addresses from Make-A-Wish families and a separate fundraiser involving dozens of themed gift baskets.

“I love seeing our dancers and their joy and them performing for something so much bigger than themselves,” said Kalinowski. “It means so much to them. It’s

beautiful to see kids have adult thinking. (The event) does so much for so many.”

The CoJoMotion Dance Company is made up of dancers in grades five through 12 from the Warwick, Manheim Township, Manheim Central, and other area school districts, as well as Lancaster Country Day. Nearly 1,000 family members, friends, staff members and community members are expected to attend.

“(The student performers) have several performances throughout the year, but they will tell you this is the most important one,” said Kalinowski. “It’s not about them. This is for children who deserve it so much. It’s so special. As their teacher, it means the world to me that that’s their mindset. When they get to meet the Make-A-Wish families, it means so much to them. As their teacher, I’m so proud of them.”

Last year, “A Season for Wishes” raised over $50,000 for Make-AWish Philadelphia, Delaware and the Susquehanna Valley, a new alltime high. That figure pushed the total amount raised in the event’s

19 years to nearly $520,000.

“If we could (match that $50,000 amount), it would be incredible,” said Kalinowski. “The money goes toward granting wishes for kids with life-threatening conditions. We are trying to raise as much money as possible. We want to make as many wishes come true as possible.”

Located at 620 Paxton Place, Suite 107, Lititz, the Lititz Dance Academy was established in 2001 and offers classes in ballet, jazz, tap, modern pointe, hip-hop, lyrical and children’s combo. CoJoMotion Dance Company was formed

in 2004 to offer an opportunity for serious dancers to continue to enhance their skills.

“The purpose of Lititz Dance Academy is to share the gift of dance with as many children as possible, in as loving an atmosphere as possible,” said Kalinowski. “CoJoMotion Dance Company gives students the dance company experience. This is our signature event. It’s been a legacy for so many people.”

Families invited to sign up for dinner giveaway

The 38th annual Lancaster County Project for the Needy (LCPN) holiday dinner giveaway has partnered with Giant Foods and United Way of Lancaster to provide a complete holiday meal for families throughout Lancaster County on the morning of Saturday, Dec. 21.

The holiday meal distribution will take place by delivery only; there will

be no pickup location. Families must preregister for this event by Friday, Dec. 13, by calling the United Way’s 211 or 855-567-5341. Volunteers will deliver the meals.

The project anticipates distributing approximately 2,700 boxes of turkey dinners with all the trimmings to low-income families throughout Lancaster County during the holiday season.

In addition to this year’s partnership with the United Way of Lancaster, LCPN will also continue the partnership with Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), the Columbia Lions, The Factory Ministries, Mission Food Pantry, Ephrata Area Social Services, and Solanco Neighborhood Ministries’ food bank to provide meals to

families in designated areas.

LCPN is still seeking donations to offset the rising costs of the groceries for the food boxes. The project relies on individual donations for more than two-thirds of the resources needed to fund the food distribution. Monetary donations can be made at www.lcpn.org.

The Lancaster County Project for the Needy is a nonprofit group, relying solely on public donations and volunteers.

There will be an opportunity for attendees to win gift baskets and other items.

Church plans events honoring the Virgin Mary

St. James Catholic Church, 505 Woodcrest Ave., Lititz, will host a bilingual Novena Celebration from Wednesday, Dec. 4, through Thursday, Dec. 12. The event will honor the Blessed Virgin Mary as Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the Americas, patron of the unborn, and patron of Mexico.

Each day at 6 p.m. in the church, a bilingual rosary - Our Lady of Guadalupe Novena - will be prayed. On Wednesday, Dec. 11, light refreshments will be served in St. James Hall following the prayer service. On Dec. 12, after the service, Holy Mass will be celebrated at 7 p.m. for the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Then a potluck dinner in St. James Hall will be held, featuring traditional Mexican dishes.

St. James Catholic Church will host two additional events augmenting the Novena Celebration: an Advent Adult Day of Reflection titled “Our Lady of Guadalupe: A Woman Clothed With the Sun” and a “Marian Apparitions and Shrines” exhibit.

The Advent Adult Day of Reflection will be held in St. James Hall on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 9 a.m.

to 2 p.m. The retreat will begin with 9 a.m. Mass, followed by a continental breakfast; three retreat sessions, including meditation times; lunch; and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament from 1 to 2 p.m.

The “Marian Apparitions and Shrines” exhibit will be open from Dec. 7 through 12. This exhibit presents Vatican-approved items from around the world, using materials developed by Blessed Carlo Acutis, who will soon be a saint.

The exhibit will be available in the parish social hall, Our Lady’s Center, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 5 to 6 p.m. on Dec. 7; from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8, and Dec. 12; and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, Dec. 9, 10, and 11.

The celebration and exhibit are free and open to the public. The events are suitable for people of all ages. Freewill offerings will be accepted to help offset the cost of the events.

Holiday Open House

“The best part of the event is just putting smiles on faces,” said Norton. “When people see value in what you’re doing, stuff like that can warm your heart. Another favorite part for me is hearing the young talented voices of the Manheim Township Troubadours.”

Also at the event, there will be arts and crafts for the kids, a refreshment table, a mood-enhancing fire pit and holiday music playing. Stauffer Mansion will be decorated inside

and out with lights and ornaments. Nearly 400 residents of Manheim Township and surrounding communities are expected to attend.

“(Getting out, physical activity and meeting people are) good for your soul. It’s good for your mind,” said Norton. “It’s good for your health. It’s good to be connected to your community. That really is the reason for everything. Our role is to provide recreation opportunities to our residents through programming

over the years. Not everybody has the passion for the same thing. As a group, we come together, and as a service club, we accomplish something. There’s a camaraderie that comes with doing things with people with similar interests.”

An active and vibrant volunteer organization, LLC meets at noon on the second and fourth Wednesdays

of every month at the Neptune Diner, 924 N. Prince St., Lancaster. Overseen by a board of directors, LLC seeks to provide services where they are needed most, and it sometimes partners with other nonprofits to promote the greater good.

“Our purpose is to serve the Lancaster city community with volunteerism and funding, where possible,” said Crabtree. “We seek out opportunities to serve. We try to emphasize activities in the city of Lancaster. Lions Clubs tend to take care of their own communities. The city of Lancaster has a lot of need.”

The services that LLC provides are as diverse and varied as the interests of its membership. LLC has been and continues to be involved with collecting eyeglasses, holding fundraisers, serving as Salvation Army bell ringers, cleaning up local trails, collecting and distributing socks, serving meals and assisting at events conducted by other service groups.

the Pentatonix arrangement of “O Come, All Ye Faithful.” Then the performers will present the proclamation of the Good News, including settings of traditional songs “Gaudete” and “A La Nanita Nana,” and finally, issue a joyful challenge through the texts of Dan Forrest’s “The Work of Christmas” and Caldwell and Ivory’s “Hope for Resolution.”

MCCL celebrates and honors music as a gift from God by seeking to create exceptional choral music, foster community, and

and facilities. There are so many options available to residents in Manheim Township. The goal is to replenish and refresh your spirits and your mind.”

The Manheim Township Recreation and Park Planning Department was founded in the 1960s through a collaboration between the township and the Manheim Township School District. The department hosts four special community events throughout the year.

“We do have a pretty good track record in the community for having this event,” said Norton. “There are some other (local events) to choose from, but ours has always been well attended. There’s always something being added to all of our events. Over the years, the township has stepped up and provided for its residents.”

Lancaster-Lebanon Disaster Relief

Lions Club raised more than $50,000 and collected nonperishable items for the victims of hurricanes Helene and Milton through the cooperation of other Lions Clubs in the state.

“When you’re volunteering and making a difference in other people’s lives and seeing them smile, and they say, ‘Thank you,’ there’s just nothing like it,” said Crabtree. “They’re good people; they’re just down on their luck. It’s all about them, but sometimes we’re getting more out of it than they do. We all come together, and we try to make a difference.”

LLC is made up of 34 volunteers, men and women, ages 30 to 99. Some are retired and some are still working, but the one thing they have in common is huge hearts for giving back.

“It started out as a city club with businesspeople, but now we don’t have anyone who lives in the city,” said Crabtree. “Most of us live on the outskirts. It’s a broad swath of life.

They just have a mission to serve. We have a very dedicated group. I have a very supportive group behind me.” Established in 1922, LLC is the oldest of the 41 Lions Clubs that serve the Lancaster-Lebanon district. Those 41 clubs are supported by more than 1,100 members. With a total of 1.4 million members across 49,000 clubs in 200 countries, Lions Club International is one of the largest civic clubs in the world.

“There’s a lot of men and women out there doing good work,” said Crabtree. “Lions tend to be in every community, so Lions are always there. Where there’s a need, there’s a Lion.”

“We’re trying to provide opportunities for people to get involved,” continued Crabtree. “If people want to make a difference in the city, we have opportunities to explore. We invite people to see what we do.” For additional information about the Lancaster Lions Club, go to www.lancasterlionsclub.com.
