T.J. Eck broadcasts his passion for sports

He’s taking a chance. He’s putting himself out there. He’s trusting his gut.

T.J. Eck is going for it.

And why not? The Columbia native and 2008 graduate of Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) is a snappy dresser, he’s got the personality, he’s got the character, he’s got the support, and he’s got the background.

“Coming out of high school, there was a part of me that didn’t know what I wanted to do,” he added. “But there’s always been something pulling me toward sports. It’s what I’ve always cared about the most.”

“I’ve always thought of myself as passionate about sports and wanting to share that with other people.”

“It’s been quite a journey to get to where I am today,” said Eck. “My life hasn’t really panned out the way I thought it would. While I don’t always understand why things happen, I believe it’s part of a plan that’s bigger than me. Maybe I’ve been put in a certain place for a certain reason.”

In the middle of November, Eck started a job as a weekend sports anchor, sports reporter and news reporter for channel 40, a Fox television affiliate in Binghamton, N.Y. In addition to shooting highlights and writing scripts, Eck’s duties include covering and reporting on Binghamton University athletics; the Binghamton Devils of the American Hockey League; the Binghamton Rumble Ponies baseball franchise, an AA minor league affiliate of the New York Mets; and local sports.

“I’m just really excited about

The Lititz Area Community Choir’s upcoming presentation of “A Celtic Christmas” promises to be an event worth singing about.

“We’re trying to present festive, holiday music that is familiar to audience members,” said Debbie Kline-Smith, the choir’s director. “(The concert) takes them on a journey of another

style of music, which is very popular right now. People seem to enjoy that style of music, and I thought it would be great to bring a different style of music to Lititz. We’re doing it in English, but this style of music makes it a different feel for the holidays.

I think people will leave there feeling ready for Christmas.”

The Lititz Area Community Choir, Warwick Alumni and Friends will perform “A Celtic

A lot of people are fascinated by history. Maybe they’re attracted to a pursuit of the truth. Maybe they’re trying to find out more about themselves.

For members of the Manheim Township Historical Society, local history is something meant to be shared with like-minded individuals.

“I think (the interest in history) is seeking a connection,” said Ben Webber, who’s been the historical

Lancaster band celebrates EP release with fall tour

In November, Lancaster-based screamo outfit Fragile Like Life After toured to celebrate the release of its latest EP, “A Long Look At A Short Distance.” The fall tour marks the band’s third time hitting the road this year, and the EP follows two albums and a single that Fragile Like Life After has released since 2021. The expedition served as an opportunity for the threepiece project to showcase the fresh material as it trod new groundcreatively and literally.

Fragile Like Life After comprises bassist Adrian Alicea, guitarist Max Ludewig and drummer Chris Copeland, who formed the band in 2021. The three Millersville University alumni met through school a few years prior, and they had already become close friends by the time the band took shape. Fragile Like Life After’s debut album, “I Thought I Saw A UFO But It Was Just Five Months,” laid the foundation for a sound as distinct as

its name, taking cues from slowcore and screamo conventions. The 12-track release showcased Ludewig’s glittery guitar melodies and Alicea’s poignant delivery of spoken-word poetry; the dreamlike combination is anchored by Copeland’s vigorous but surgically precise drumming.

In November 2022, Fragile Like Life After released its sophomore album, “(I Don’t Think They’re Coming).” The band became an active player in Lancaster’s music scene and the East Coast DIY circuit with frequent local shows and its first tour, and the 10-track album reflects Fragile Like Life After’s increasingly cohesive sound. “(I Don’t Think They’re Coming)” introduced gripping vocals screamed by Alicea to Ludewig’s lead vocals and the driving riffs that defined its debut.

Three years of touring and recording sharpened Fragile Like Life After’s edge and allowed its

members to refine both their sound and their dynamic as a band. The trio’s live shows became increasingly electric; Fragile Like Life After’s sets typically feature Ludewig’s rowdy engagement of the crowd while Alicea and Copeland remain individually locked in an intense showdown with their respective instruments.

is the product of three years of hard work as a band and the personal growth of its members, and the fivesong EP separates itself from Fragile Like Life After’s earlier releases with an entirely new approach. Although shorter than the band’s first two albums, “A Long Look At A Short Distance” doesn’t waste a second; the songs are sequentially

this opportunity and excited about doing the best I can,” said Eck, who earned a communications degree from Juniata College and a master’s in broadcast and television from Syracuse University. “I think it’s the perfect opportunity for me right now, to get back into the television industry. I do have a lot of TV experience (about 10 years). It’s what I have a passion for. It’s what I’m trained to do.”

“I’ve never thought of myself as a TV personality,” Eck continued. “I’ve always thought of myself

as passionate about sports and wanting to share that with other people. I don’t try to put on a persona on TV. I have just gotten more comfortable in front of the camera.”

During the two years prior to landing his current job in Binghamton, Eck wrote about local high school and college sports for two publications in Lancaster and one in Lebanon. The sports writing proved to be a career bridge for Eck after an illness had forced him to step away from a budding television career that included two previous stops in Nebraska and one

in Virginia.

“(The sports writing) was a much difference experience, but it got me back to sports journalism, and that was so important to me,” said Eck. “I needed something to give me that fire and purpose again. Those writing experiences were really vital for me getting back on track.”

While Eck didn’t uncover his passion for sports journalism until college, he got his footing beneath him at LCHS, where he played baseball and basketball for the Crusaders. Eck credited both a supportive LCHS staff and family upbringing for the foundations of his confidence.

“I loved my time at Lancaster Catholic High School,” said Eck, 34. “It was a great experience, and it really helped me from a work ethic standpoint. There are just high expectations at Lancaster Catholic, and that set high standards for me. It taught me the value of hard work, and it helped prepare me for what’s expected in life.”

Fragile Like Life After kicked off its fall tour with a show in Philadelphia on Nov. 7.
The band’s latest EP incorporates its new approach to writing and performing, featuring more lyrical contributions from bassist Adrian Alicea.

structured and work together to tell one story. “It felt like the most collaboratively we’ve ever written something,” Alicea said. “I filled in on bass, but my contribution was more lyrical. Max took initiative in writing the guitar riffs, and Chris helped structure the songs and flesh them out.”

“Sonically and lyrically, (‘Long Look At A Short Distance’) is a lot more concise than the other stuff. The songs flow into each other,” Copeland added.

“From the start, it was (Alicea’s) idea to write something that doesn’t stop,” Ludewig said. “They said to me at one point, ‘I don’t want to talk during our set at all. I want to say hello, play our songs and say goodbye. (‘A Long Look At

A Short Distance’) is not just five songs; this is a piece of work.”

society’s president for four years. “For some people, their point of departure is their heritage. For others, it’s connecting with their interest in in a place or a thing or people. It offers an almost constant stream of euphoric moments. These secrets come out of the woodwork, and it’s amazing.”

Housed at 601 Granite Run Drive, inside the historic Stoner House at Overlook Community Park, the organization’s main purpose is to learn about, educate, preserve and raise public awareness about Manheim Township history. But what makes the society such an active force in the community is its 90 members.

“Different people get interested in history for different reasons,” said Webber. “We try to be a presence and get people to stop and ponder. Most of our members are Manheim Township residents. Some are just interested in the Stoner House. There are other people who are concerned about historical resources being demolished, and they want us to get involved. Others are simply academics, and they want to stay in the loop.”

engages in community events like reenactments; collaborates with other local historical societies; and maintains and improves the Stoner House, which has evolved into a museum for Manheim Township history.

“My favorite part of the society is the camaraderie that comes from understanding our community,” said Webber. “I really love sharing this passion for history, coming together with others and learning and sharing information. I love how history has changed my view of my hometown. I love knowing what’s happened to our community over the years.”

Manheim Township was founded and organized in 1729. Much has changed over the past 300 years, and today Manheim Township is a combination of suburbs and rural areas that is home to 44,000 residents.

Overseen by a board of directors, the historical society conducts general membership meetings once a year. As an organization, it promotes special educational programs;

“I think Manheim Township’s history is one of being blessed with resources,” said Webber. “Manheim Township has experienced a great amount of success because of the natural resources that were there. Not all of the townships in the county have that. I also think there’s a sense of civic pride here.”

There are nearly 60 historical societies similar to Manheim Township’s sprinkled throughout Lancaster County. Some are associated with municipalities, and others are related to specific historical topics.

“When the area was settled, a group of prominent citizens divided the county into 16 townships,” said Webber. “The citizens were primarily of British decent. The British owned a lot of the land, and the Germans were working the farms. The British gave most of the townships English names, but the only township that was named with a German name was Manheim. Manheim Borough was formed multiple years later, and ever since there’s been this confusion, even though Manheim Township and Manheim Borough geographically don’t touch at all.”

The historical society was born 12 years ago when a group of local volunteers came together and rallied around the saving and restoration of the Stoner House.

Talent on parade

Reflecting on his opportunity as one of six Doherty Petri School of Irish Dancing students who took part in the Riverdance performance in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade this year, Isaiah Pujol, a 17-year-old Manheim Township resident, called the experience “awesome.”“A lot of people don’t understand how big Riverdance is in the world of Irish dancing,” explained Isaiah, who noted that the experience brought together the chance to be part of an international show where he could dance with professionals in an event as large as the Macy’s parade. “It’s this fantastic thing,” he said.

Jase Lawrence, an 11-year-old who lives in Penn Manor School District and who was both the shortest and youngest member of the Riverdance parade performers, was impressed by the experience of dancing with professionals he has looked up to.

Sarah Smith, a 14-year-old who travels weekly from Baltimore to train at the school, said, “It opens up opportunities for the future.”

Esther Pujol, owner and head teacher of the school, called the chance to take part in the parade “unprecedented and amazing.”“It was an unexpected early Christmas gift,” she said, noting that she is not aware of Riverdance doing anything like this before. Other students from the school

who took part in the parade included 15-year-old Ezekiel Pujol of Manheim Township, 14-year-old Abigail Ernst of Baltimore, and 16-year-old virtual student Liam Snodgrass of Hebron, Maine.

Teacher Lisa Petri explained that the opportunity was truly a once-ina-lifetime experience for the students because Riverdance does not take part in the parade every year. She explained that the show sent out a call for student dancers to participate and that dancers could audition by video if they had not attended a Riverdance summer camp. A few of the students had attended Riverdance camps held in Boston, but Smith submitted a video.

By early November, the students who were accepted to take part and perform alongside professional Riverdance dancers had received notice. A few weeks prior to the event, they were apprised of the steps they would need to learn. “The kids are familiar with the show choreography,” said Petri, who noted that the students from the Riverdance camps had less to learn than those who had not attended. Smith experienced a little stress going into the event, but she reported that she had fun learning the dances.

On Nov. 26, the students arrived in New York City and took part in a three-hour rehearsal to prepare them

for a performance of almost a minute, 40 seconds of which would be seen by television viewers. Later that same day, the students, who were part of a group of about 40 amateurs chosen to take part, rehearsed for about 30 minutes in the spot on the street where they would perform, which had been closed for that purpose.

On Thanksgiving Day, the students lined up with the professional Riverdance performers at 7 a.m. According to Isaiah, they waited about two hours before marching two hours to the spot where they danced. Jase marched and danced with an injured foot that requires him to wear a special boot most of the time. “It hurt,” he noted, but added that the experience was worthwhile.

Isaiah noted that the weather on the day of the parade was a problem. “(The rain) was the challenging part,” stated Petri, noting that the students

wear specialized shoes with fiberglass tips and heels. Because the concrete on which they performed was extremely slippery, several dancersboth professional and amateur - fell, but no one was hurt.

Petri noted that Riverdance brought Irish dancing to the world stage. “I think it speaks volumes to how entertaining Irish dance is,” she said, noting that the show has been running for three decades and that the current tour is called The New Generation. “That is literally true because it is now multigenerational in terms of appeal and for the dancers,” she said.

Students at the school will once again be associated with Riverdance when they perform in the lobby of the American Music Theatre, 2425 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, prior to the Irish dancing phenomenon’s 7 p.m. show on Saturday, March 1.

Christmas” at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 22, at a new venue, Warwick High School’s 1,400-seat Performing Arts Center, 301 W. Orange St., Lititz. The event is free to attend, tickets can be obtained at the door on the night of the concert and a freewill offering will be accepted.

The performance is expected to last about 70 minutes.

“We’re singing traditional Christmas songs with a Celtic flair,” said Kline-Smith. “When the audience walks in, bagpipes will be playing so they get a feel for the music. The order of songs grows and builds. There’s an exciting opening number, a very upbeat piece. Then we do something a little lighter. Soloists are scheduled to sing in the middle of the program, and then the choir sings the last three selections, including ‘Auld Lang Syne.’”

In addition to the 90-member Lititz Area Community Choir, the concert will feature soloists Matt Hehnly, Rachel Moury and Lauren Epps, as well as a duet by Gannon Ziegler and Jacob Soslow. The ambiance of the event will be enhanced by the twobagpipers-one-drum Ceòl Nèamh Pipe Band and the talents of dancers sprinkled throughout.

“Singing brings great joy to the people performing and listeners,”said Kline-Smith. “Music brings people together like no other art form. Sometimes we don’t know what the

music is doing for us, but it is definitely doing it. There’s a warmth that comes from people being together at a performance.”

Since the middle of September, the choir has been rehearsing and practicing at Brunnerville United Methodist Church for 90 minutes each Thursday to prepare for its performance.

“A lot of these singers are very dedicated,” said Kline-Smith. “I think the joy of singing is with them, maybe since they started. They feel joy in the performance. I think it’s important to them to be involved with something they’ve always loved. Many of them appreciate the education behind it.”

“It’s people from all walks of life, and it’s great to see them all come together,” she added. “It’s very enjoyable to see that mix of people.”

“A Celtic Christmas” will be the choir’s third holiday concert since being formed in September of 2022, and fifth overall. The choir is currently formulating plans to present a rock ‘n’ roll-themed concert in the spring of 2025.

“Our goal is to always sing with our best quality of sound,” said KlineSmith, a former longtime music educator in the Warwick School District. “The community has really come out to support us. I think it’s becoming a tradition because they know we’re striving for excellence. When people see quality, they’re going to want to come back.”

Doherty Petri School of Irish Dance students who performed with Riverdance in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade include (from left) Sarah Smith, Abigail Ernst, Liam Snodgrass, Ezekiel Pujol, Isaiah Pujol, and Jase Lawrence.
