Burns Night at Historic Beale Manor will take place on Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Victorian-style mansion house, located at 200 S. Church St., Parkesburg. Beginning at 6 p.m., visitors will arrive to the music of a piper. The festivities will go into full swing with a traditional haggis ceremony, where the haggis will be brought into the company and Burns’ poem “Address to a Haggis” will be read. Harpist Kendrah Tozzo will provide music before and during the buffet dinner that will feature Scottish fare, including haggis, smoked salmon, salad,

trifle, shortbread, cock-a-leekie (leeks and chicken) soup and neeps and tatties (mashed yellow rutabagas or turnips and potatoes). Those who attend are invited to get into the spirit of the evening by wearing their family tartans, whether in a kilt, scarf or tie. Dress for the event is semiformal. Following dinner, there will be additional entertainment, including a musical program by Charlie Zahm entitled “A Tribute to Robert Burns.” There will be toastings, readings of Burns’ work and a sing-along of Burns’ songs, concluding with his popular “Auld Lang Syne.” This is the second annual Burns Night presented by the Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation, but this year marks the first time the event will be held at Beale Manor. tion to the core subjects, middle school students choose from a variety of elective subjects and clubs to broaden their interests and learning. All students participate in music and art programs. The Academy at West Fallowfield Christian School is a unique high school experience offered for ninth through 12th grades. The college-style model fosters student accountability and time management skills. It combines learning on campus two and a half days per week with the remaining days of independent study done at home. The Academy offers electives on Wednesday mornings. Some of the current elective offerings are art, music, life skills, SAT preparation, archery and nature/environment. During the course of the year, teachers plan all lessons, provide instruction and assign work to be completed at home on remaining days. Students are graded and issued report cards, and they compile portfolios of completed work. At the end of the year, achievements are assessed by the evaluator of the parents’ choice. A pay-per-class option is also available. West Fallowfield Christian School has a full comprehensive Resource Room to offer academic and learning support. The Chester County Intermediate Unit provides additional reading and speech therapy support. The small class size also gives

students opportunities to receive individualized attention. For 77 years, West Fallowfield Christian School has been providing Christian education for families and students in the surrounding communities. The school’s members attend a total of more than 38 churches in the Chester and Lancaster county areas. Bus transportation is supplied for kindergarten through eighth-grade students residing in the Avon Grove, Coatesville, Octorara, Oxford, Pequea, Solanco, and UnionvilleChadds Ford school districts. Financial grants are available for eligible families in kindergarten through eighth grade. The school is located at 795 Fallowfield Road, Atglen. Interested applicants are encouraged to contact the school at 610-5935011 for more information or to schedule an appointment. Readers may visit www.wfcs.org or find the school on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. In the case of inclement weather, readers may check the school’s website for alternate dates. ANNUAL BEEF DINNER

SATURDAY, JANUARY 19, 2019

Chester County recently signed contracts on the preservation of its 500th farm, bringing the total number of farm acres preserved in the county to just under 40,000. In total, more than 136,000 acres - 28 percent of land in Chester County has

been preserved since the beginning of its open space preservation program in 1989. The recently preserved 109acre farm, owned by Gerald and Cindy Rohrer, is located in Upper Oxford and West Fallowfield townships. It has been a family farm since 1966, when Gerald’s parents took it on as dairy farm. Over the years, the farm changed to raising heifers before moving to crop farming. Gerald, the youngest of five children, and Cindy took over the farm in 2001, and today the Rohrers grow corn for livestock consumption, hay for the equine industry and mulch

hay for the mushroom industry. The family also runs a small sideline business of trucking for agriculture haulage. Chester County’s Agricultural Preservation program began in 1989 when the resolution was adopted. The first farm was preserved in Newlin Township in 1990, and over the years, the county has contributed more than $106 million toward farmland preservation. Farm preservation in Chester County is based on an agricultural conservation easement. Farms that are 10 acres or more are eligible if they are adjacent to permanently preserved land. Farms not adjacent to permanently preserved land must be a minimum of 50 acres for the state/county program and 25 acres in size for the Municipal Challenge Grant program. Chester County farm owners may review the eligibility requirements for preservation by visiting http://www.chesco.org/1368/ Farm-Programs-Overview. The deadline for applications is Aug. 1 of each year.

Local veterans are invited to attend meetings of American Legion Charles F. Moran Post 475, which meets on the fourth Monday of every month at 11 a.m. at Freedom Village at Brandywine, 15 Freedom Blvd., Coatesville. The next scheduled meeting will be on Jan. 28. Each monthly gathering features a formal meeting where each post officer gives a report, generally followed by a guest speaker. Past speakers have included representatives from the Holocaust Museum, the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center and Quilts of Valor. The post provides a free buffet lunch following the program, but donations are accepted. According to Chuck Wimer, chapter adjutant, Post 475 has approximately 90 members. The post is named for a Downingtown resident who was one of the first local soldiers known to have died in World War I. Membership is open to veterans of various conflicts, including World War II, the Vietnam War, the Korean War and the Gulf War, as well as those currently serving in the War on Terror. Those who join are asked to pay a yearly membership fee. The chapter is seeking younger veterans and active-duty military personnel to join the post in order to ensure that the chapter continues. “A lot of people don’t get involved until they

retire, but without the younger people a lot of veterans organizations would have to (disband),” Wimer stated. Wimer explained that the post is called a “paper chapter” because it does not have a building and social hall like other local American Legions. Rather, members meet at Freedom Village. “We are not a place to come and (socialize). We are really focused on the community,” he said. Post members take part in various activities. They provide an honor guard at area parades, attend the funerals of veterans, take part in Veterans Day ceremonies and replace the American flags on the graves of veterans on Memorial Day. The members also work closely with the Coatesville VA to provide assistance to veterans. Most recently, members of the post participated in the Wreaths Across America event at Hopewell United Methodist Church on Dec. 15, 2018. Following a ceremony in the church recognizing the various branches of the military, post members joined Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and members of the community to place wreaths on the graves of veterans. “We are involved in various Scout troops, plus we sponsor the Diamond Dogs, the Downingtown Legion baseball team,” noted Wimer. Tips For Controlling Appetite baked tortilla chips with low-fat salsa or bean dip are low-calorie snacks that also require some work between bites. The time it takes people to dip between bites affords more time for the digestive tract to release signals to the brain that they are full. -Reach for fiber first. Another way to conquer hunger without overeating is to reach for fiber before eating other parts of a meal. Vegetables are rich in fiber, but since they are often served as side dishes, many people tend to eat them only after they have eaten their main courses. That can contribute to overeating. Fiber fills people up, so by eating the highfiber portions of a meal first, people may be less likely to overeat before their brain receives the signals that their stomach is full. Individuals should consider eating vegetables as an appetizer or, if the entire meal is served at once, clear their plate of vegetables

When hunger strikes, various appetite-control strategies can help people avoid overeating or eating during those times when boredom is more to blame than an empty belly. -Eat slowly. When a person eats, a series of signals is sent to the brain from digestive hormones secreted by the gastrointestinal tract. These signals produce a feeling of pleasure and satiety in the brain, but it can take a while for the brain to receive them. By chewing slowly, people can give the signals more time to reach their brains, potentially preventing them from overeating. -Choose the right snacks. The right snacks can make it easier to eat more slowly. Instead of reaching for potato chips or pretzels, both of which can be eaten quickly and picked up by the handful, choose snacks that are both healthy and require a little work. Carrots dipped in hummus or

before diving into the main course or other side dishes. -Drink water. Perhaps the best - and least expensive - way for people to control their appetite and ensure that they do not overeat is to drink more water. A 2010 study funded by the Institute for Public Health and Water Research that included 48 adults between the ages of 55 and 75 found that people who drank two 8-ounce glasses of water right before a meal consumed 75 to 90 fewer calories during the ensuing meal than study participants who did not consume water prior to their meals. Over the course of 12 weeks, participants who drank water before meals three times per day lost roughly five pounds more than those who did not increase their water intake. Controlling appetite does not have to be a complex undertaking. In fact, some simple strategies can help people avoid overeating.

Overcoming Workout Boredom mixed martial arts provide ample exercise and opportunities to meet other fitness-minded people. If games or competitions only take place once or twice a week, individuals can supplement their participation with more traditional workouts on off-days. -Take along an electronic tablet. Many fitness facilities now include WiFi internet access with the cost of a membership. People can take their electronic tablets with them to the gym to watch a television show or movie while burning calories during the cardiovascular portions of their workouts. -Periodically change the regimen. It can be easy for people to get bored with a workout if they

Even the most ardent fitness enthusiasts sometimes lack the motivation to exercise. Various factors, including boredom with a fitness regimen, can affect one’s motivation to hit the gym. In instances when boredom is difficult to overcome, men and women who want to stay in shape can try the following strategies: -Join a sports league. A workout does not have to be limited to the weight room or the cardiovascular area of a local gym. If one’s motivation to work out is waning, a competitive sports league may be the answer. Many fitness facilities even offer sports leagues for adults on their premises or at nearby parks. Sports such as racquetball, soccer, boxing, and

are always doing the same repetitive exercises. Individuals may ask a personal trainer at their gym for some advice on how to switch things up and still meet their fitness goals. -Set new goals. Boredom with a workout regimen sometimes creeps in because people have achieved their initial fitness goals and have not set new ones. Once people have achieved a goal, they should set new ones so they have a new carrot dangling on the end of their stick, so to speak. Nearly everyone encounters workout boredom at one point another. Various strategies can help individuals overcome such a malaise and reinvigorate their enthusiasm for exercising.

Atglen Church from pg 1 church was built in 1858. “The church was started by Hephzibah Baptist Church in the 1800s as Glen Run Baptist Church,” she explained. “In 1858, they vacated the church where Glen Run Cemetery is located and built the present building in the town of Atglen.” The vacated church building at Glen Run slowly deteriorated and was later taken down. A chapel was built at the entrance to the cemetery in 1890. The chapel is still used for funeral services and special events. After a series of pastors through the years, Atglen Missionary Baptist Church’s most recent leader was the Rev. Charles Montgomery, who served at the church until June of 2018. “The membership had dwindled, and the church (closed its doors) in June,” said Yates. “On Nov. 4, we began meeting again.” She noted that church member Carson Arnold spearheaded the effort to reopen the church. “He went to Nottingham Missionary Baptist Church to ask (pastor) Michael Moore if there was a way to reopen the church,” Yates related. “They were very instrumental in helping their sister church. Michael Moore sought out Joe Newsome, an evangelist and supply pastor, to help us out until a permanent pastor can be found. The Rev. Newsome is not the permanent pastor, but he is willing to stay as long as we need him.” Yates said that the current church congregation is composed

of new members and those who attended the church prior to its closing, including her and her husband, Ernest. “ We attended there years and years ago, so we have come back to help,” she said. With the exception of stainedglass windows that were added in the 1970s, the church building has remained unchanged since it was built. “It’s a beautiful building,” Yates said. “Back in the 1970s and ’80s a lot of maintenance work was done on the building and the stained-glass windows were put into place. They were just frosted windows before that.” All are welcome to attend the 11 a.m. services, which feature music, Scripture readings and prayer. “We have an organ and a piano but no one to play them, so everything is a cappella,” Yates said. “We open with song, then we have prayer and an offering. Pastor Joe then brings the sermon. His sermon is based on the Scripture we read that day.” She said future plans call for the church to have a choir and possibly add more services. “As the church grows, we will open early for Sunday school and have mid-week services and Sunday night services,” she said, adding, “Pastor Joe announced that on April 10 through 14 we will have a five-day revival meeting with special singing each night and concluding on April 14 with Communion (at the Sunday service).” For more information, readers may search for “Atglen Missionary Baptist Church” on Facebook.

After closing its doors for several months, Atglen Missionary Baptist Church is now open for Sunday services at 11 a.m. The church is located at Main and Dallas streets in Atglen.

The Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS), 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, will offer two classes focused on fraktur, both of which will be taught by local artist Emily SmuckerBeidler. Burns Night from pg 1 and is considered the oldest Covenanter church in America. The church structure was rebuilt on the same foundation in 1849. A Presbyterian academy was later added to the building. At one point, that building became the Bart High School. Today, it is used for a summer church service, concerts and the foundation’s Scottish Festival. The foundation is independent from the Presbyterian church, and it focuses on the historical nature of the structure. Most recently, the foundation

replaced the north wall of the church, and there are other projects still to come. “The church itself is in pretty good shape, but there’s always something (in need of repair) with a building that old,” McCool said. Tickets for Burns Night must be purchased by Wednesday,

Participants will learn how to use a nib pen and india ink and learn both traditional techniques and modern adaptations. The registration cost, which will be discounted for LMHS members, includes all materials required, including paper, handouts, tracing paper, pencils, and uncoated, machine-finished paperboard. FINAL DAYS!

from pg 1 program on Tuesdays from 3 to 5 p.m.,” said a beaming Leaman. “We’re excited to open (for) another opportunity (to serve area students) during the week.” The new program will be open to students in grades seven through 12. Transportation to the center will be provided by Pequea Valley School District (PVSD). Leaman noted that the program will offer one-one-one tutoring for students and hopefully workshops to help students work on making wise career decisions in the future. “It will be a fun atmosphere, but more focused on academics and developing (career) resources,” he said. Leaman said the idea for the program grew out of the original goals the youth center has always worked to meet. “The mission (is) to be a safe place where area youths can come to have fun and grow closer to one another and to caring adults and to be very relational and offer a spiritual component,” said Leaman. According to Leaman, student responses to the center show that those goals are being met, but he and Hoover, who have been directing the center together for about a year, wanted to offer more. “(We were seeing) students graduate, no longer coming to our programs, and (dealing with) difficult situations,” said Leaman, who noted that not having the skills or training to find gainful employment was chief among these. One of the program’s goals is to incorporate CareerLink and other similar skills workshops. “We want to expand into these new areas and develop more resources for the future,” said Leaman, who added that he and Hoover would like the center to be a place students can come for advice. Toward that end, the center has already partnered with PVSD. “We have an incentive program coordinated with the school with parental permission,” explained Leaman. “We can have more involvement (with students) and help them put together goals.” Leaman pointed out that because of the relationship between the ministry and students, the leaders and volunteers can interact with students about career options. “I have conversations weekly with students about what they are interested in and what we can be doing now (to help them prepare).” In one room at the center, students can reap the rewards of taking part in an incentive program. “This is our Factory Store,” said Leaman. “(Students) can earn points for good attendance, grades, and behavior, and we have T-shirts, (beverages), and snacks they can (purchase when they) redeem points. It’s a concrete motivation and a reward for their (efforts).” Currently, the Factory Youth Center holds Open Door Night every Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. “We usually have 55 to 70 teenagers here,” said Leaman, who added that local organizations volunteer to provide a hot meal for the students. “It’s a huge blessing,” said Leaman. The evening includes a short lesson. “We send a message that we are here, and we understand life is difficult,” said Leaman. “Our job is to be available for these students and walk with them and encourage them.” In addition, students may enjoy free time, games, and opportunities to express themselves musically or artistically. Each room at the center is staffed with a volunteer and has a camera. The center is open for a men’s basketball program on Sundays from 6 to 8 p.m. Readers who are interested in learning more about The Factory Youth Center may visit http://thefactoryministries.com.
