Library Friends To Host Victorian Tea By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
The Friends of the Moores Memorial Library will hold their annual fundraising tea on Saturday, Feb. 23, at 2 p.m. at Chantry Place, located adjacent to the library at 15 N. Bridge St., Christiana. Each year the tea has a theme to add to the experience. This year, the theme will be “Victorian Afternoon Tea,” corresponding with the currently popular PBS television series on Queen Victoria. The tea will include an assortment of savories and sweets, as well as various teas at each table, plus there will be a buffet table with additional items. There will also be a toast with sparkling cider. Also featured during the tea will be local storyteller Deborah Pieri. “She’s going to tell some kind of story that relates to the Victorian era and
(provide) an old-fashioned look at the world,” said Jeannette Kolb, Friends president. Each guest will receive a free ticket for the door prize drawings, with items chosen to relate to the Victorian theme. Dress for the day should be appropriate for an afternoon tea. Guests are invited to help set the mood by wearing Victorian attire or hats. Kolb emphasized that tea time attire may be either contemporary or period. “(People) like to get dressed up, though it’s optional,” she said. “The Victorian era is broad, so if they have any type of costume attire they want to wear, that’s appropriate.” Designed for teenagers and adults, the tea has become a popular event, which usually sells out. “This is the fourth year; I think people look forward to it,” Kolb said. where the troop meets. According to www.girlscouts.org, the goal of cookie sales is to teach girls five skills: goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics. “(Autumn) is learning how to interact with people,” said Kayla. “She is shy, but cookie sales are helping her get out of her shell.” She added that the girls also learn to count change and to provide quality customer service. Those who visit the booths also have an opportunity to donate to Hometown Heroes, a new program adopted this year by the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania (GSEP). The program will provide cookies to nonprofit organizations in the local community. “We will be giving (cookies) to firefighters, police officers and EMTs, so all money donated will go to that,” Kayla noted. Cookie sales will run through March. Specific locations of cookie sales can be found by entering a ZIP code at www.gsep.org or by downloading the official Girl Scout Cookie Finder App from the GSEP website for free.

Atglen, a member of Junior Girl Scout Troop 4230, and her dad, Ray, were selling cookies at the other booth. Riley said that sales were brisk and that the troop plans to use proceeds from the cookie sales to take a trip. “We’re planning to go to the Baltimore Aquarium and stay overnight,” Riley said, noting that her personal goal is to sell 555 boxes of cookies. As of Feb. 3, she has sold 394 boxes. Both Riley and her dad said they enjoy meeting the customers, who often offer comments about cookie sales, including reminiscing about their own daughters selling cookies or selling cookies themselves. “One person who stopped by said she remembered when the cookies were only 50 cents a box,” said Ray. Kayla said her troop is planning to use proceeds from cookie sales to hold a pizza party and to attend a Camporee. Troop members also plan to use funds to support a community service project. At their recent Sunshine Meeting public work session, the Chester County commissioners received an update from Chester County Health Department director Jeanne Casner announcing a milestone in the WalkWorks ChesCo! challenge. Since the launch of WalkWorks in April 2017, Chester County residents have registered more than 4 billion steps in the program. WalkWorks ChesCo! is a program that aims to promote, educate and empower county residents to adopt a healthier lifestyle one step at a time by creating more places for walking, supporting and promoting walking groups, coordinating walking challenges and creating a website that allows everyone to track and tally their steps. What began as the county’s response to the national Healthiest Cities and Counties Challenge has grown into a program that engages county residents of all ages and that has been replicated by communities in other states. Throughout 2018, WalkWorks ChesCo! participants were motivated by 18 competitions, including the First Responders Walking Challenge, the Chester County Library Summer Walking Challenge, the Ville to Ville Step Challenge, Chester County Farms Tour and the YMCAs’ Y2Y Walking Challenge. Chester County Commissioner Terence Farrell, who first brought the idea of the Healthiest Cities and Counties Challenge to Chester County, cited various benefits of walking, such as improving mental health, reducing chronic disease risks and

The Strasburg Fire Company extended its annual spring donation and consignment sale to two days last year, and sale committee members were so pleased with the results that they will keep the two-day format again this year. The 45th annual sale will be held at the fire station, 203 Franklin St., Strasburg, beginning at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 22, and continuing on Saturday,

takeouts will be available on Feb. 22 from noon to 5 p.m., as well as all day on Feb. 23. “We’re trying to make (Friday) a family night out. Sit down with your kids and enjoy your evening,” Ivan invited. He noted that tables will be set up in the station’s dining hall, and a few high chairs will be available for little children. The success of Friday’s sale last year enabled more items to be moved on Saturday, Ivan remarked. The weather did not appear to dampen spirits too much. “We had a good day (on Saturday) despite the rain,” said committee member Jonathan Peachey.

Feb. 23, starting at 8 a.m. “Friday evening’s sale was very successful,” reported committee chair Ivan Fisher, referencing the 2018 event. “There were lots of people, and it made Saturday more enjoyable.” The auction on Friday ran until 8 p.m. last year, and Ivan expects it to run later this year. Crafts and small quilt items will comprise many of the auction lots. This year, the food offerings on Friday evening have been expanded, with grilled sausage sandwiches, fried shrimp, and french fries added to the menu, which also includes chicken corn soup made by fire company members and volunteers. It, a weightlifting class, and I take that three times a week with Leanna. I never enjoyed exercise, but now I really look forward to going.” Hoffman added that she and the other four candidates have also become good friends. “We call ourselves the ‘Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans,’” she said with a smile. Hoffman is featured in two online articles. Readers may visit www.womans day.com/health-fitness and choose the article from Jan. 10, “Conquer a Weight Loss Plateau With These Genius Tips and Tricks.” To view Hoffman’s recipe for stuffed green peppers, readers may visit www.womansday.com/health -fitness/nutrition and choose the article from Nov. 8, 2018, “The Recipe That Helped Me Finally Lose Weight.” Pictured on front:
Chester County resident Tina Hoffman will be featured in the March issue of Woman’s Day magazine as one of five women chosen to take part in the Live Longer and Stronger Challenge. Ivan explained that on wet days like last year, there are more tents to protect items and attendees and much less hay and straw for sale. This will be the first year that horses are not on the sale bill, he added. “Mostly fire companies don’t sell horses anymore,” Peachey remarked. The spring sale - the fire company discontinued its fall sale several years ago - is the organization’s largest fundraiser. “We are looking to replace an engine in 2021, so it’s important to have another good sale,” Ivan said. Sale committee member Mike Lockard shared that the apparatus scheduled to be retired is a 1982 Seagrave pumper. In hopes of having another profitable sale, the committee has arranged for thousands of items to cross the auction blocks. Hundreds of quilts, crafts, new and used tools, antiques, groceries, new and used furniture, outdoor furniture, sporting goods, collectibles, shrubbery, feed and bedding, farm machinery, sheds, building materials, carriages, gift certificates, and lawn and garden supplies are slated for sale on Feb. 23. The fire company kitchen will sell a variety of food and beverages, and there will be several food vendors as well. A local Amish-run ice cream shop will be among the vendors for the first time this year. “They support the fire company, so it gives us a chance to support them as well,” Ivan said. Ivan expressed his gratitude for the generosity of area businesses, many of whom have donated gift certificates or other items for the sale. He added a special thanks for the members of the sale committee, including his co-chairs, Isaac E. Fisher and Amos Fisher. The vast majority of the committee is Amish. “The Amish community feels it’s a good way to give back to the fire company for all the services it provides,” Ivan said. “But it’s not just Amish that makes the sale successful; it’s the whole community.” Donations for the sale will be received at the fire station from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 20 and 21, and from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 22. For more information about donating or the sale in general, readers may call the station at 717-687-7232 or Isaac at 717-687-6223.

Those who pick up the March issue of Woman’s Day magazine will want to check out the story that features Chester County resident Tina Hoffman, who was chosen as one of five women to take part in the Live Longer and Stronger Challenge. As part of the program, Hoffman has been coached and mentored by nutritionist and cookbook author Joy Bauer from the “Today” show and was part of the Women’s Red Dress awards ceremony in New York City to coincide with American Heart Month, which is observed in February. Hoffman explained that she applied for the program after viewing photos of last year’s winners, who were challenged to become healthy and lose weight. “Last February I got my Woman’s Day magazine and I saw this little blurb about the challenge,” she said, noting that she completed an online application and submitted photos. “A couple of months later I got an email that said I made it through to the

first round. I was really surprised. I just did it on a whim.” After participating in a phone interview, she learned in June that she was accepted to become part of the challenge after competing against thousands of other women who applied from across the country. The other four candidates, who are from California, Illinois, South Carolina and Tennessee, are between the ages of 31 and 64. Hoffman said that after being accepted in the program, she took part in a conference call along with Bauer and the other candidates. “She gave us recipes, ideas and (basic information) about good things to eat that were so simple,” said Hoffman. “She started by (suggesting) that we take 10,000 steps a day for exercise.” Hoffman conferenced with Bauer regularly over the phone and was assigned a nutritionist and mentor. She also received advice from Dr. Jennifer Mieres and Dr. Stacey Rosen, authors of “Heart Smart For Women,” who discussed nutrition information and stressed the importance of
getting a good night’s sleep. Although Hoffman has lost 26 pounds since the challenge started, she said the program is more about getting healthy. “They don’t focus on losing weight; it’s really about heart health,” she explained. “Weight is a measurable thing, but since June, I have been taken off cholesterol medicine and off diabetic medication and my blood pressure medicine was (reduced).” The culmination of the challenge was the 16th annual Red Dress awards ceremony in New York City, scheduled for Feb. 12. “We had a photo shoot in New York in November for the magazine, and we got our hair and makeup done,” Hoffman said, noting that the candidates were provided with red dresses to wear to the ceremony. Hoffman credits the staff members at the Lionville YMCA for helping her to enjoy exercise, including Meghan Gelb, the spin class instructor, and Leanna Pacinelli, a personal trainer and group exercise instructor. “I took a spin class with my husband, and now I go twice a week for an hour. It’s a great class,” said Hoffman. “(Meghan) recommended Lift

Time-Saving Suggestions Posted Whether it is to spend more time exploring the great outdoors or enjoying the company of family and friends, everyone wants to find more time in their busy schedules to do the things they love. While work at home and at the office always seems to be beckoning, no one wants to be tied down by housework and/or a to-do list. Though it is impossible to add more minutes to the day, several tips can help people save time. First, people should clean as they go. When it comes to keeping a home clean and organized, it pays to do a little bit at a time rather than spend a
whole day or weekend on chores. Wipe down the shower after each use to avoid the build-up of mold and mildew. Dust surfaces in the closet regularly to keep items and clothes clean longer, and wipe kitchen surfaces while cooking. Regular maintenance goes a long way toward keeping a home tidy and ready for spurof-the-moment gatherings. Second, avoid shopping on weekends. People who work a typical 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. schedule often do their shopping on weekends because that is when they have the most time on their hands. But since that is true for most people, long
lines and crowded spaces can be expected when shopping on weekends. People are encouraged to try to carve out some time on a weekday evening, especially a Monday or Tuesday, to free up precious weekend time and avoid long lines. Third, simplify meal prep. Eating healthy, nutritious food does not need to be sacrificed when pressed for time. Instead, look for low- or no-prep meal options at the grocery store that can serve as a standalone meal or as a base with a protein option.
