Seventeen-year-old Thomas Mellema completed his Eagle Scout project with a public ceremony on Feb. 8 to dedicate a new 25-foot flagpole at Minch Park, Parkesburg. Thomas explained that the American flag placed on the new pole will be on view for those who take part in baseball games in the park. “I wanted another way for the community to honor the flag and the country, and (I wanted to) make sure the flag would be visible from the baseball field so when they (play the) national anthem, they have a place to look,” Thomas said. “I just figured Minch Park needed a flagpole.”

The event will feature a short service and the administering of the ash at the service’s conclusion. All are welcome.

A BIG Fundraiser

The U.S. flag was placed on the pole along with the black Prisoner of War/Missing in Action (POW/MIA) flag. “I decided to raise the POW/MIA flag as a thank you to the VFW - my troop’s charter organization and our sponsor over the years. They’ve helped us both financially and by giving us a place to have our meetings every Monday. We’re always looking for ways to help them, to show our appreciation,” Thomas said during the dedication ceremony. “Most importantly, (the flag) is to remind the community of all of the service veterans have given our community and all those who have served us in the past.” VFW Post representatives and a color guard were on hand at the ceremony along with Parkesburg Mayor John Hagan. When Caleb Stiger opened the Baron Insurance Group (BIG) Gordonville office, he was looking for a way to reach out to the community. It was natural for him to consider doing a fundraiser that involved basketball. “I grew up playing basketball, and I still play a little bit,” said Stiger. “I thought this would be an easy way (to get involved) because it’s something that I know about, and I could See BIG Shots pg 2

Scouts of America as a Tiger Cub when he was 6 years old. He was recognized as a Life Scout at age 13 and began planning his Eagle Project. “At 13, he told me he needed to go to a borough council meeting. I assumed it was for a merit badge,” David recalled. At the public comment period, Thomas went to the podium and proposed his project to council. “I didn’t even know that he had that planned,” David said. To make the project possible, Thomas had the support of his troop, Troop 135, and the sponsoring organization, the Parkesburg VFW. Ladder 8 from the Keystone Valley Fire Department was used to install solar-powered LED lighting on top of the flagpole. Most of the materials for the project were donated, including all of the stone and slate for the base, provided by Brandywine Quarry. “I had tons of help. A lot of my troop came to help me, and

The Factory Partners For Third Free Throw Event

Participants shot free throws to raise funds for The Factory Ministries during last year’s BIG Shots Free Throw Competition (right photo). Emma Drouillard of Strasburg, who represented Alliance Custom Cabinetry of East Earl, completed 96 of 100 shots in 2019 (left photo). This year’s fundraiser will be held on March 6.

Classes, free workshops and exhibitions are some of the programs offered by the Chester County Art Association (CCAA), a nonprofit organization with the goal to “educate, inspire and connect” the people of Chester County through the arts. “(The CCAA) is all about promoting the arts, creativity and creative thinking,” said CCAA executive director Wendy Kershner. “I think our world always needs more creative thinkers and creative problem solvers. We are (providing) a really good service.” See Art Association pg 6

Marlene Miller, a senior at West Chester University and a spring intern with the Chester County Art Association (CCAA), invites the community to check out the CCAA Exton Square Studio Gallery, which offers a variety of items for sale made by CCAA members. Weekly art classes and specialty workshops are also offered at the site.

organize the event and use connections in the community to come out and support The Factory.” The third annual BIG Shots Free Throw Competition fundraiser will be held in the gym at The Factory Ministries, housed in the Together Community Center, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, on Friday, March 6, beginning by 10 a.m. In addition to the free throw contest, organizers hope to hold a half-court competition for participants featuring a special prize. Greater Paradise area businesses and organizations are encouraged to register participants, who then gather sponsors. Individuals may register as well. Each participant will be assigned a time slot of 30 minutes during the day on March 6 to come in and make as many foul shots out of 100 as possible. In 2019, Emma Drouillard of Strasburg, who represented Alliance Custom Cabinetry of East Earl, completed 96 of 100 shots. In 2018, a Pequea Valley High School girls basketball player was the winner. “I made (88 baskets) both years, and I thought that was pretty good,” said Stiger. “(The students) come in at the end of the day and beat us all.” Two participants at a time will attempt to make foul shots in

the gym. Two winners will be recognized - the one who makes the most baskets and the one who raises the most money based on a pledge per basket and flat donations tally. “We have a gift card for the person who makes the most shots, and we will have a gift for the person who raises the most money,” explained Stiger. Adam Nagle, executive director with The Factory Ministries, said that he loves how the event promotes a shared goal. “It’s a beautiful picture of how it takes all aspects of the community to impact the common good of the community,” shared Nagle. “When we think of serving those who are under resourced, we often think of social service agencies, schools, counselors, churches, (but we) often forget about the business community. Here’s an event run by a business that loves its community and wants to make a difference.” Kylie Stoltzfus, director of communications for The Factory, noted that the staff members at BIG have really made the event their own by partnering to reach out to area businesses. “Last year we had 30 participants representing 22 companies,” she said, adding that a few individuals also took part. Players are not required to raise a minimum

amount of funds, but they are asked to garner at least three sponsors. Stoltzfus commented that because the event is held on a Friday, regular weekday activities are ongoing during the fundraiser. “One year Head Start (students) came in and cheered the (basketball) shooters,” she said, adding that Factory staff members would be available to give tours of the facility to participants, supporters, and spectators. Nagle echoed Stoltzfus’ thoughts. “Its fun, engaging, well done, and has impact and return,” said Nagle. “We love working with Baron and so appreciate the heart they have for people.” Stiger said that the first event raised $12,000 for The Factory Ministries, and that the 2019 competition raised nearly $15,000. His goal for this year is to raise $20,000. Stoltzfus noted that a leaderboard will be running in the gym to update visitors on the totals for participants. Businesses that are interested in getting involved may visit https://thefactoryministries.com or call 717-687-9594. Those who would like to learn more about the free throw competition are also invited to come out to watch the event.

The more the parents are educated, (the better they can) recognize when their child is cyberbullied or other negative (areas) of their technology.” She noted that she believes teaching parents about the red flags of dating violence is especially important. Another concept Straub feels should be impressed upon children is the life success sequence. “It’s statistically proven that if you go to school and you graduate and go to college or start a career, (and then) get married, and then have children … in that sequence, you are much less likely to end up in poverty,” said Straub. Straub has already been invited to talk to members of sports teams in one Lancaster County school. workshop will be offered Feb. 22 and 29 from 11 a.m. to noon. The gallery space offers artwork, jewelry, hand-blown glass, knitted items and prints for sale. “In the portfolio bins are originals and high-end prints,” said Kershner. “It’s a little bit less expensive if people don’t want to invest in a frame.” CCAA’s headquarters, located at 100 N. Bradford Ave., West Chester, has been in existence since 1953. “One of our founders was N.C. Wyeth, so we have a storied history,” Kershner said. “This is where a majority of all our studios are, (including) a clay studio, printmaking, a darkroom, painting, sculpting and drawing studio. We have a library and a gift shop and two large galleries. The featured or solo show is by invitation and we do a group show. Our show for February is ‘Black and White.’ Anyone can submit work into the show.” The Exton location, which opened in 2007, is situated on the first floor of the mall near Boscov’s. “The mall management company wanted to support the community and support nonprofits,” Kershner noted. “This used to be Victoria’s Secret, which (moved) upstairs. The space looks wildly different.” In addition, the CCAA offers classes at The Garage youth center in Kennett Square, at elementary schools in Chester County and for students in the migrant education program. “We do a program once a week at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Hospital. It’s for veterans that are part of an outpatient program there,” noted Kershner. “It’s free for them, but they must be part of that program.” More information about CCAA, art classes and the outreach program is available at www.chestercountyarts.org or www.facebook.com/Chester CountyArtAssociation. WCU Earns Certification In Online Teaching Support West Chester University (WCU) has become one of only five institutions nationwide to obtain Quality Matters (QM) Program Certification for Online Teaching Support. The institution-level QM Online Teaching Support certification requires all online faculty members to undergo training in best practices for online course delivery, provide faculty with ongoing pedagogical support, encourage faculty professional development to increase their knowledge and skill in online teaching, emphasize instructor availability and feedback to learners and collect and use feedback from learners to improve online teaching. Certification is based on these five criteria and three years of data. Additionally, 19 WCU courses have obtained QM course certification. This certification requires the course itself to meet eight general standards and 42 specific review standards. Of WCU’s 19 total QM-certified courses, 14 are graduate level. Rui Li, executive director of WCU’s Office of Distance Education, pointed out that some content areas are more suitable than others for online delivery and “successful online/blended teaching requires a significant course transformation.” Facilitating that transformation is Li’s Instructional Technology team, which includes four instructional designers, a learning technology specialist and two online support specialists. This spring, there are 130 classes offered 100% online, more than 60 classes offered in blended mode (between 30 and 79% online) and four that offer 80% or more online instruction. Most are upper-level, but there are also introductory/first-year-level courses in many subjects such as art history, communication studies/disorders, meteorology, music history, political science, statistics, writing and others. The next goal, Li said, is QM certification in Online Learner Support, which recognizes programs that provide the student and academic services needed for learner success and use learner feedback to continuously improve those services.

experience and running was not her exercise of choice, but she participated at her nieces’ insistence. She enjoyed the experience so much she is returning for the spring. “I feel the Girls on the Run program fills a huge need among elementary school-age girls,” Fox stated. “There are many coping and fitness programs for middle and high school girls, but elementary school is where it all starts these days. This program gives them confidence and has them thinking about their health at a critical time in their lives.” In addition to connecting with the girls and watching them grow in confidence and help each other, Fox said she found they were helping her as well. They would challenge her to a race, and while coaches do not have to run, she did occasionally and found that her health was improving. And on a day when she was feeling overly stressed, a girl gave her a note that said, “Coach Joy, you are doing great!” Those interested in participating in the program as a coach are

their district where there is an opening. The Chester County Girls on the Run 5K and Chester County YMCA STRIDE 5K Challenge will take place on May 30, beginning at 9 a.m. at the New Garden Airport in Toughkenamon. A fee is charged to participate in the programs. To register, individuals may visit www.ymcagbw.org/GOTR or www.ymcagbw.org/STRIDE. Participants may also register at any branch of the Brandywine YMCA. For more information, including how to obtain financial assistance, readers may contact Kathryn Gute, program director, at kgute@ymcagbw.org or 610643-9622, ext. 2133. Pictured on front: Joy Fox (back, center) was a first-time coach for Avon Grove Intermediate School’s Girls on the Run (GOTR) program this past fall. The Brandywine YMCA, which offers the program, is currently seeking additional coaches for the spring GOTR session, which will begin on March 9.

The YMCA of Greater Brandywine is looking for volunteer coaches for the spring session of Girls on the Run (GOTR) and STRIDE programs. The spring session will begin on Monday, March 9, and culminate with a 5K on Saturday, May 30. GOTR focuses on building self-esteem and promoting emotional and physical health in young girls. STRIDE, which stands for Success + Teamwork + Respect + Inspiration + Determination = Excellence in Character, was developed for boys in response to the successful GOTR program. The 10-week programs teach youngsters healthy habits through running, games and lessons. Participants practice twice a week, generally after school, but coaches have an input on scheduling. The YMCA also provides training and a manual to help coaches with the curriculum. Joy Fox was a first-time coach for Avon Grove Intermediate School’s GOTR program this past fall. She had no coaching

asked to complete a volunteer application at www.ymcagbw. org/gotr-stride-volunteer-form. All YMCA coaches, both volunteers and employees, are required to have child abuse clearances. GOTR and STRIDE are open to students in grades three to five. There are also middle school programs for students in grades six to eight, with Heart and Sole for girls and STRIDE TOO for boys. Among the schools participating in the programs this spring are Rainbow Elementary School in the Coatesville Area School District; Brandywine Wallace, Lionville, Pickering Valley, Shamona Creek and Springtown Manor elementary schools and the Marsh Creek Sixth Grade Center in the Downingtown Area School District; Exton Elementary School in the West Chester Area School District; and Twin Valley Elementary Center in the Twin Valley School District. Other program sites will include the Hearts in Hands Community Center in Honey Brook and the Lionville Community YMCA. Students who attend nonparticipating schools may register to participate at another school in

Habitat for Humanity of Chester County (HfHCC) and Charles L. Huston IV, executive director, have announced that Huston stepped down effective Dec. 31, 2019, after serving the organization for over 17 years. Huston joined the organization in 2002 and is one of the longest-serving executive directors of the Habitat International affiliates.

During his 17 years as executive director, Huston’s leadership and advocacy in the community helped increase the impact of HfHCC on the need for affordable housing in Chester County. During his tenure, Habitat volunteers and donors built more than 90 homes in partnership with families in need. HfHCC also opened a thrift shop in Caln Township called the

Habitat ReStore, which supports homebuilding efforts through its sales of new or gently used donated items. Huston also initiated a land bank by purchasing land as it became available for future home construction while the land was both available and affordable. Outside of Chester County, Huston and his team led two trips to Louisiana to build three

homes for victims of Hurricane Katrina. He also has worked with former President Jimmy Carter on his annual Carter Work Project in Los Angeles. Habitat will continue its mission with 40 more homes currently underway in the borough of West Grove and 10 more in the city of Coatesville. To learn more, readers may visit www.hfhcc.org.
