Parkesburg Library Offers Knitting Group By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
All stitchers - no matter their age, whether they prefer to knit or crochet or whether they have many years of experience or none - are welcome at the Parkesburg Library’s weekly knitting group, nicknamed “Knit This - Purl That.” Held every Thursday from 6:30 to 8 p.m., the gathering offers a way for a beginner to learn how to knit and for a more experienced needleworker to gain inspiration for new projects. Last year, the Parkesburg Library was looking for new community activities to add to its programming. “(The library’s event coordinator) Kathleen Hood gave us a list of things we might want to try
to start in our library. I thought maybe a knitting club would be something people would enjoy coming to,” library staff member Sandy McLaughlin explained. “She started it.” McLaughlin and fellow staff member Cheryl Johnson now attend the weekly club meetings at the library. Attendance varies, with young knitters participating more during the summer months when they have fewer school commitments. “One little girl did finger crochet. She sat here and had a scarf done before anybody could blink,” McLaughlin said. “Another lady brought two of her girls; they knitted on looms. They still come, but not as regularly as they had before school started.” See Knitting Group pg 8

parades and volunteer together,” Martin explained. “Regional FFA activities are typically contests or events that encompass several local chapters, and state events include chapters from around the state.” Martin noted that the Octorara chapter meets monthly to discuss new business pertaining to upcoming contests, regional and state leadership conferences and volunteer opportunities in the community. “FFA is an extracurricular student organization. It is one of the three components of agriculture education. The other two components are classroom/ laboratory instruction and the SAE,” Martin reported. “In order to be a part of this program, you must be enrolled in an agricultural class. Students who are interested in joining Octorara’s FFA chapter have the opportunity to enroll in one of two in-house career technical education programs - mechanical systems technology or animal and plant science technologies - or enroll in a year-round FFA leadership course.” She added that the organization was formerly known as Future Farmers of America. “The name was changed (to FFA) in 1988 to reflect the diversity in agriculture. Agriculture goes beyond the farm,” Martin stated. “The majority of Octorara FFA members do not live on a farm or have (not) even been on a farm until high school. They have an interest in the agriculture industry, whether that is working with animals, plant production, wildlife, biotechnology or business.” For more information about Octorara FFA, readers may visit www.octorara.k12.pa.us, select Octorara Junior-Senior High School under Select a School, click on Clubs and choose FFA.
and help foster career-ready skills,” explained Octorara FFA adviser Helena Martin, animal and plant science instructor. “All three of these students kept very detailed records of their projects over the course of several years. They raised the funds required for the degree by either working, showing or selling project animals, depending on their project.” Jason’s project was sheep breeding, showing and marketing, while Alaina’s project was breeding and showing dairy heifers and working as a lifeguard. Kelsey’s project was raising and showing Holstein dairy heifers and working at local dairy farms milking cows. Keystone Degree candidates are also required to demonstrate leadership abilities and participate in a variety of FFA activities within and outside of the chapter. “FFA chapter activities are events that the chapter does together as a group. Tebow attends various Night to Shine events throughout the world as a surprise to attendees. This year, he visited events in Ecuador and Mexico, among others. During a video message that was shown at the start of the festivities, Tebow said that the Night to Shine events are held at more than 600 locations around the world. “Tonight it’s all about you. It is my honor right now to crown every single one of you as king and queen of the prom,” Tebow stated in the video. Greeting guests at the local Night to Shine event was Stacey McNutt, event chair,

Beam Receives 4-H Volunteer Award Nelson Beam of Elverson was recently selected as the 2019 4-H Outstanding Swine Club Leader. He was recognized for being a longtime volunteer and leader with Penn State Extension’s 4-H Youth Development program in Chester County. Beam was a member of the Chester County 4-H Swine Club for 11 years before attending Penn State, where he received his Bachelor of Science in animal science. After college, he returned to Chester County and began volunteering as the club leader for the Chester County 4-H Club. He has served in this role for more than 30 years.
The nominations were judged on the following areas: contributions to the nominee’s county 4H swine program; contributions of innovative educational programming and activities; involvement in 4-H youth shows, contests, and sales; length of service; participation in 4-H community service; and contributions to the regional, state, and national swine program or industry. Beam received the award before the swine sale of the junior market livestock sale during the 2019 Pennsylvania Farm Show at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center
in Harrisburg. Benjamin Williamson, chairperson of the Pennsylvania Farm Show Junior Market Animal Department, was on hand to present the award. Now operating a 250-sow operation in modern facilities transformed on his home farm, Beam has remained involved in the swine industry from his engagement with local industry partners to serving in leadership roles with joint-county organizations for nearly 10 years. He continues to serve as a resource for the Penn State Extension Chester County 4-H program, as well the larger swine industry and its producers.

For those who are ready to start a new project, the club has a few suggestions. “We’ve been making lap robes for the veterans’ hospital,” McLaughlin said, adding that attendees are also making lap robes and shawls for patients at a local dialysis center, since the procedure frequently makes them feel cold. The interest in knitting seems to be growing. “A lot of people are picking it up,” McLaughlin said. “(You can experience) everything you read about knitting - it’s good for your health. It calms you. It’s something people have found that helps them with stress.” The library’s knitting group adds a social aspect as well. “It gets me out at night, and we do have fun,” McLaughlin said. “You meet new friends (and) you meet new people. It helps a lot in a lot of different ways.” Parkesburg Library is located at 105 West St., Parkesburg. Anyone interested in the knitting group may sign up at the library, register at www.parkesburglibrary.org or simply drop in on a meeting night. Adult beginners are also welcome. “I think it’s important we let people know everybody is welcome, all ages,” McLaughlin said. “You don’t have to know how to knit or crochet; we will teach you,” Johnson added. The women believe that learning how to knit or crochet is often easier in person than it would be by reading directions or watching videos. “If they watch what we are doing, we can guide them hands-on,” Johnson said. Since attendees are working among friends in a casual atmosphere, they can find help when they try something new, or they may even find help in untangling knotted balls of yarn. “We’re a friendly group. We like to laugh a lot,” McLaughlin said. “It makes you feel good to know somebody’s there to help you or maybe ‘ooh and ah.’” “I enjoy the women’s company and all the laughs we have,” Johnson said. Participants should bring their own yarn and needles. For those who have a project they are working on, the club offers an opportunity to continue the pattern among good company. Junior Grange Sets Italian Dinner Russellville Junior Grange’s annual Italian dinner fundraiser will be held on Saturday, Feb. 23, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the Russellville Grange, 245 Old Limestone Road, Oxford. The all-you-can-eat menu will include spaghetti, homemade meatballs, stuffed shells, sausage, bread, beverages and dessert. There will also be a salad bar. A low-carb, gluten-free option of spaghetti squash will also be offered. There will be no advance ticket sales for the event, which is open to the community. Tickets will be available at the door. Special family pricing for two adults with two or more children will be available. Proceeds will be used to cover all meeting expenses and to send the youths on their annual spring camping retreat. In the past, children who helped prepare and serve the dinner were able to attend the weekend retreat free of charge. This event is not only a fundraiser. The Grange is a family fraternity, so children work alongside their parents every step of the way to learn and improve important life skills such as; planning (choosing a date for the dinner); cooking; marketing/advertising; people skills (greeting diners); and responsibility (every family has a specific job so the evening goes smoothly). New members are welcome to join the Junior Grange at any time. Children ages 5 to 14 from all backgrounds are welcome to participate, not just those who live or work on a farm. For further information about the Junior Grange, readers may email russellvillejuniorgrange@yahoo.com or visit www.grange.org/russellvillejuniorpa550.
