players are very friendly and passionate about the history and rules they played by,” said Jordan “Woody” Rajan of Glenmoore, an environmental specialist. “I enjoy dressing the part and reenacting how games were played back See Vintage Base Ball pg 6

Chester County Commissioners Michelle Kichline, Kathi Cozzone, and Terence Farrell have announced the appointment of Brianne Zanin as director of Chester County’s Department of Open Space Preservation, effective Feb. 4. Zanin, 34, moves to this new role following six years as deputy director of the County of Maui Department of Parks and Recreation. As director of Open Space Preservation for Chester County, Zanin will lead the department in the strategic effort to preserve agricultural land, municipal parks, trails, greenways, and other land preservation projects.

Zanin takes over the leadership role from Bill Gladden, who was named executive director of French and Pickering Creeks Conservation Trust in August. Agricultural programs coordinator Geoff Shellington served as
interim director. Zanin is originally from Idaho and grew up in the northcentral panhandle in the Rocky Mountains. She worked for the County of Maui for eight years before relocating to the southeast Pennsylvania region. Zanin holds a bachelor’s degree in sport management from Missouri Baptist University and is a graduate of the National Recreation and Parks Director’s School. She is a member of the National Association of Counties, the National Recreation and Parks Association, and the International City/County Management Association.

Museum Reaches $250,000 Goal The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg announced that it has reached the $250,000 goal for the Ready for the Roundhouse fundraising campaign for the preservation of five historic steam locomotives. The nonprofit Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania took the lead in the Ready for the Roundhouse campaign, which kicked off with a $50,000 matching fund challenge from the Pennsylvania Railroad Technical and Historical Society. The campaign began in November 2016, and the $250,000 goal was met in December 2018. The five steam locomotives that are part of the Ready for the
Roundhouse campaign are keystone pieces that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and are part of the Pennsylvania Railroad Historic Collection. They include Pennsylvania Railroad M1b No. 6755, K4s No. 3750, L1s No. 520, H10s No. 7688, and B6sb No. 1670. These engines, along with the restored E6s No. 460, are slated to take their place in the museum’s tobe-built roundhouse, for which ground could possibly be broken this year. In general, the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s restoration projects are continuing. Individuals who are skilled in welding, metal fabrication,
cabinet making, painting, and pipe fitting are needed in the restoration shop as volunteers and are invited to contact the volunteer/program coordinator. Donations for equipment restoration are also accepted on the museum’s website. The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania is home to a world-class collection of 100 historic locomotives and railroad cars, a working restoration shop, a library and archives, and an immersive education center, along with special events, programs, and exhibits. “No one understands (losing a child) like someone who has been through it,” said Nancy Heckman, who lost her son Rob to stomach cancer more than three years ago. She, along with Dan and Phyllis Steinman, who lost their son, Andy, two years ago in an auto accident, have brought BASIS, a Christian support group for grieving parents, to Paradise. The new BASIS support group, which began meeting in November, is sponsored by Calvary Monument Bible Church, located at 1660 Mine Road, Paradise. It meets near the church on the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m., and the next meeting will be held on Monday, March 4. The organizers attended a training session in Ephrata for leaders prior to starting the group. BASIS, which is associated with Handi-Vangelism Ministries International, stands for Brothers And Sisters In Support, and the ministry provides support, resources, educational workshops, structured gatherings, and more for bereaved parents. According to Phyllis, the meetings revolve around a dis-
cussion topics, such as the holidays or winter, but the agenda is flexible. “If someone is having an issue or a concern is brought up, the conversation will revolve around that,” she explained. “(The meetings are) very welcoming,” added Nancy, who noted that when new members arrive and need to talk about their personal experiences, the leaders can switch gears. Phyllis stated that there is no set curriculum. “If you miss a month, you missed out on the conversation and the sharing, but you don’t have to worry about reading a chapter (in a book),” she said. Phyllis noted that she and Dan are grateful to Nancy for introducing them to BASIS. “After our son, Andy, died, we reached out to pastor Jim Davis at (Calvary Monument to) ask if any other parents had lost children,” she explained. Davis shared the names of Nancy and her husband, Lee, who has since passed away. In early 2017, Nancy asked Phyllis to attend BASIS meetings that are held at a church in Akron. The two began making the monthly trip to Akron, and
they found the sessions helpful. However, neither relished the nighttime drive to Akron. “There are so many people in (this area) who have lost children, we thought it would be beneficial to have a group down this way,” said Phyllis. Because fathers and mothers may grieve differently, BASIS has styled the support group atmosphere to be comfortable for all involved. Speaking is not required, but those who wish to are encouraged to share feelings. “Women are (typically) more into support groups,” noted Nancy. “Men (generally) don’t want to talk about their feelings.” When Phyllis began attending BASIS with Nancy, Dan became interested. Phyllis recalled that when she came home, he would ask questions about the meetings. “I told him it was hard to explain, and he just needed to come (along),” Phyllis said. When Dan attended, he met a few other fathers who were attending, and he is hoping to see men join the Paradise group. In addition to training, BASIS provides free leadership support through BASIS director Don Allison, as well as a
newsletter, meeting topics, and lists of resources. In addition, BASIS holds two yearly countywide gatherings, including a spring breakfast and a summer picnic. BASIS honors the deceased children of members by printing their names with birth and death dates quarterly in the newsletter. Nancy also described a portable Wall of Remembrance, which includes the children’s names, photos, and other information. The wall is displayed during the picnic and the breakfast. Readers who would like more information about BASIS may visit www.hvmi.org. Individuals who are interested in joining the Paradise BASIS support group may call Calvary Monument Bible Church at 717-442-8161.
meet the council and just see what a nice community this remains after 125 years.” Christiana was a bustling town in 1893 when a petition was approved to have the question of incorporation placed on the ballot. After the residents voted their approval, the incorporation of the borough was finalized in January 1894, and the first official borough council adopted its bylaws on March 12, 1894. Later that year, a survey was made of the borough limits at a cost of $8, and a contract was signed that fall for the installation of 25 streetlights for full night service. “Christiana Borough was quite the hub at one time for a lot of industry,” Pringle said. Christiana was a busy town long before it was incorporated. It’s slogan, “Freedom Began
Here,” is particularly appropriate as the town is known for the Christiana Resistance of 1851, which was seen as one of the pivotal events leading to the start of the Civil War. On Sept. 11, 1851, slave owner Edward Gorsuch and associates, who had come north from Maryland looking for runaways, surrounded the home of former slave William Parker, where the fugitives were said to be hiding. Parker raised the alarm and residents from all around, both black and white, came to their defense. Gorsuch was killed in the conflict, and others were wounded. The act of resistance resulted in a declaration of martial law and the arrest and trial of several area residents who had participated in the action. Those men
ultimately received a verdict of not guilty. The story was publicized across the country, inflaming sentiments in both the North and the South. The borough retains a number of historical artifacts from this event and other facets of the borough’s past, some of which will be on display during the ice cream social. “I’m hoping to have some historical photos and artifacts, so as folks come in and out that evening, they can learn some of the history of the community. I want to be sure we’re inviting our new residents,” Pringle said. “I hope to have the historical society join us so they can have a display.” For more information, readers may visit www.christiana boro.com or call the borough office at 610-593-5199.

Borough staff and council members will be on hand to dip ice cream and to meet community members. “We want them to come out and meet our council and join us for an evening of conversation,” borough manager Carol Pringle said. Pringle sees the ice cream social as a good opportunity for people to meet their local officials and to learn more about the history of the community. Newer residents in particular may not know the rich history of Christiana. “We’re hoping that we have a good turnout. The community has changed a lot, and we have a lot of new families who haven’t been here for a long time,” Pringle said. “I’m hoping we can entice them to come out and

Croissant French Toast Cherries are nutritional powerhouses that contain antioxidants, which studies have suggested can reduce the risk of heart disease. In addition, anthocyanins in cherries may help reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Furthermore, cherries are a natural source of melatonin, which promotes healthy sleep. People with arthritis may find that cherries can reduce the inflammation associated with
their condition. This recipe for Croissant French Toast with Fresh Bing Cherry Sauce is courtesy of the California Cherry Board and makes for a delicious and nutritious start to the day. Croissant French Toast with Fresh Bing Cherry Sauce (Serves 4) 1/2 cup orange marmalade 2 cups pitted fresh California Bing cherries
4 croissants (Tip: Day-old are fine) 3 eggs 1/2 cup milk 1/4 cup heavy cream 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 2 cups fresh whipped cream 1/2 cup chocolate sauce Instructions: 1 - Heat orange marmalade in a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Add the cherries and cook for 5 minutes, stirring frequently. Remove from the flame. 2 - Slice the croissants in half lengthwise, as if to make a sand-
wich. Whisk eggs, milk, and cream together in a flat-bottomed baking dish. Lay the croissant pieces in the egg mixture, turning several times as the liquid is absorbed. 3 - Add the oil to griddle and heat on medium flame. Cook the croissant slices until golden brown on each side. 4 - Place the bottom croissant slices on serving plates. Top with 1/2 cup cherry mixture. Top with the croissant tops, then add a dollop of whipped cream and finish with a pour of chocolate sauce.

Santiago explained that the items will be sold or given away throughout the event. “We will sell a (live) auction item, then (announce) a Chinese auction item (winner), and then announce a door prize,” he said. Santiago will also give an update on the ministry, which strives to help men who have been traumatized and who have turned to abusing chemicals or developed other kinds of addictions. RTCM aims to support clients in finding healing and developing healthy coping mechanisms. “The purpose is to bring men out of their addiction and heal them from their trauma, so they can become productive citizens in the community,” said Santiago, who noted that by bringing a relationship with God into the students’ lives, the program aims to restore the men to their families. Santiago noted that he plans to have a program graduate share his story at the banquet. “When you
see (a graduate share his testimony), you thank God for letting you have a small part in that,” he noted. Tickets are required for individuals to attend the banquet. Seating is limited, and tickets must be purchased by Friday, March 1. Those who would like to register to attend the banquet may call 717-304-3291 or email officemanager@restart ministry.org. A freewill offering will be received at the event. Readers who would like to learn more about RTCM may visit www.restartministry.org. When Jaime Santiago, executive director and founder of Restart Training Center Ministry (RTCM), heard about Billy Molls from a local construction company, he knew Molls had the right qualifications to speak at Restart’s annual sportsman banquet. “(Molls) takes people on deer hunts in Alaska,” explained Santiago. “He has become a believer, and he will share how God has used his experiences.” Restart’s fourth sportsman banquet will be held on Wednesday, March 27, at Shady Maple Banquet Hall, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl. Doors will open at 5 p.m., and dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. In addition to Molls’ talk, both live and Chinese auctions will be held, and a number of door prizes will be given away. Molls grew up in Wisconsin, fishing, trapping, and hunting with his father and grandfathers. The experiences prepared him for
exploring the wilds of Alaska. Molls attended guide school in Montana and completed a twoyear apprenticeship in the Alaskan bush to become a licensed Alaskan big-game hunting guide. For the past 20 years, sportsmen from around the world have followed him through some of the most remote regions of the largest state in pursuit of a variety of native game. Molls, who is married with three daughters, continues to appreciate the rewarding time he spends with nature. He is grateful to be able to share those experiences with others. Santiago noted that auction and door prize items worth a total of $22,000 have been gathered for the event. Among the live auction items will be a Mathews bow, a muzzle loader, and a deer shanty. The Chinese auction will feature a TenPoint crossbow, an Elite compound bow, and a Kids Package Carbon Express Blade Pro. Door prizes will include hunting and

Chocolate Festival from pg 1 The Chocolate Festival is also popular with local community members who enter the competition with their best chocolate creations. Each entry must include chocolate as one ingredient. Categories to be judged are cakes/cupcakes, cookies, candy/fudge, brownies and other desserts. There is also a children’s category for bakers age 16 and under. “People of all ages can participate in the baking,” said Reese, who is happy to see young entrants. “Because there was a good response we’re having (the children’s competition) again. We’re hoping more kids will join in the fun,” she said. All entrants are asked to bring a complete batch of their favorite chocolate creation in a disposable container to the church fellow-
ship hall between 8:30 and 10 a.m. on the day of the event. A complete batch is considered to be a whole cake, 18 cupcakes, 36 cookies or an entire batch of candy. No freezer items will be accepted, as they could melt prior to serving. There is no fee to enter, and there is no limit on the number of entries per person. “We always have cakes and cupcakes - everybody has their specialty. The ‘other desserts’ is probably our smallest category,” Reese noted. Judging will start promptly at 10 a.m. After judging is complete, volunteers will prepare separate servings that will be arranged on tables for ticket holders to select. At 2 p.m., ribbons will be awarded for first, second and third places, as well as honorable
mention, in each category. A special prize basket will go to the entry determined to be Best in Show. The winner of that top award will also be invited to be one of the judges for next year’s event. Proceeds from the Chocolate Festival will go to the Oxford United Methodist Women. The group distributes money to many different missions throughout the year, locally and around the world wherever there are needs. Tips Posted For Managing Stress Stress is an issue that seems to affect everyone, especially in the workplace. Workers who take on too much work or those tasked with performing jobs beyond their abilities might be particularly affected. However, they can employ various strategies to manage their stress. Embrace planning: A 2011 survey from psychologist Robert Epstein asked more than 3,000 participants in 30 countries which stress management technique was most effective at helping them overcome their stress. Epstein discovered that participants felt planning was the most effective way to manage their stress.

associated with the game. It’s an awesome opportunity to exercise and play ball with likeminded folks,” he commented. “Everyone that I have met in this sport has been respectful to the game and its participants.” Alex “Cardigan” Marmelstein of Havertown, a data analyst,
explained that vintage base ball is the perfect balance between (modern) competitive baseball and slow-pitch softball. “One cannot be overpowered by highspeed pitching, but it still maintains a competitive atmosphere,” he said. According to the rules of vintage base ball, players dress in historically similar attire and use period-appropriate equipment, including handmade wooden bats and hand-stitched balls made exclusively for vintage play. The ball is slightly bigger than a modern baseball and a little bit softer. In addition, only one ball is used during the entire game. Unlike modern baseball, players do not wear gloves when playing in the field. “Fielding without having a mitt requires a greater emphasis on poise and discipline when fielding balls in play,” Marmelstein explained. “Even the most routine ground or fly ball isn’t a given when playing on a grass field and catching with your bare hands,” added Rajan. Kraeer said that some challenges associated with the vintage game are similar to the modern game of baseball. “A lot of it is mental: realizing the different scenarios when you’re in the field, knowing what to do on the base paths and not beating
yourself up over a strikeout or muffed play,” he stated. Despite the challenges, all of the team members agree that playing the sport is rewarding and does not require that participants be seasoned athletes. “I would most certainly recommend this sport to any baseball fan that is looking to get some healthy exercise and meet some awesome people while re-creating America’s pastime,” said Kraeer. Marmelstein added, “I highly recommend it to others as it provides the balance of competitiveness of a club team with a more casual in-game, playing experience.” The Brandywine Base Ball Club of West Chester plays its home matches at East Goshen Park in West Chester, and games are free for spectators to attend. The team competes with other vintage clubs in the Mid-Atlantic Vintage Base Ball League. “If you are looking for some fun, friendly competition with a great group of men and women, come out for a game or two at East Goshen Park and see for yourself,” Rajan said. Without a break, such people’s abilities to reason become compromised, and they may end up making poor decisions or feeling less confident in their decisions, which may increase their stress levels. Frequent breaks, even if they are just brief walks to get a glass of water, can help avoid both the physical and emotional effects of stress. Stress affects people across the globe. This technique is most effective when people are mindful of their thoughts, particularly those that might be negative or stress-inducing. Take breaks: A heavy workload may compel people to sit down at their desk and keep working until quitting time. However, that approach takes both a physical and an emotional toll. Planning is essentially a proactive approach to managing stress and fighting it before it even starts. Smartphone apps make it easier than ever to schedule one’s time. Utilizing such apps or opting for the more traditional route by using a day planner can be a highly effective way to manage stress. Practice cognitive reframing: Cognitive reframing is another effective stress management technique that involves changing the way a person looks at something so his or her experience of it changes. Living God Lutheran Church (LGLC) is currently offering yoga classes and line dancing lessons on Sundays at the church, located at 3200 Horseshoe Pike (Route 322), Honey Brook. Activities are free, but attendees are asked to bring nonperishable food items that will be donated to the Honey Brook and Twin Valley food pantries. The beginner’s yoga classes are being offered from 3 to 4 p.m. on Sundays through April 7. “If you ever wanted to try yoga, here is your opportunity to try it for the first time or get back into it if you’ve not done it in some time,” said Beth Defeo, LGLC outreach coordinator. She noted that attendees should wear appropriate exercise gear and bring their
own mats. The yoga classes are being led by congregation member Joan Rumer. “She leads yoga at Tel Hai (Retirement Community) and offered to do it at the church,” noted Defeo. Country line dancing lessons are held from 6 to 8 p.m. and are being offered by Defeo on Sundays through April 7. Defeo, who has been line dancing since the 1990s, explained that line dancing involves choreographed steps that people perform at the same time. No partners are required. “Lessons are designed for beginners or novice dancers, but we also will do some more advanced dances for those who’ve been dancing for some time,” Defeo said, noting that she offers the classes at the church in three sessions throughout the year.
This recipe for hot cocoa cookies marries the decadent taste of chocolate with the notion of a warm and soothing hot cocoa that is ideal for a chilly February day. Even though the premium cocoa mix is baked right into the recipe, do not hesitate to enjoy a steaming mug of cocoa on the side as the perfect complement to this rich and tasty cookie. Hot Cocoa Cookies Yield: 5 1/2 dozen cookies Cookies: 8 tablespoons (1/2 cup) unsalted butter, at cool room temperature, 65 F to 68 F
1/2 cup hot chocolate mix 1/3 cup light brown sugar 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon espresso powder, optional, for enhanced flavor 1 large egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 11/4 cups unbleached all-purpose flour 11/2 cups mini chocolate chips 1/2 cup cocoa nibs, optional Topping: About 5 1/2 dozen bittersweet disks, or other high-quality chocolate wafer Marshmallow fluff, cocoa nibs or chopped nuts, for garnish Preheat the oven to 375 F. Lightly grease two baking sheets, or line with parchment. To make the cookies: Combine the butter, hot chocolate mix, brown sugar, baking powder, salt and espresso powder in a mixing bowl. Beat until the mixture is smooth. Add the egg and vanilla, and beat until thoroughly combined.
Weigh out the flour, or measure it by gently spooning it into a cup, then sweeping off any excess. Add the flour to the cookie mixture, stirring to combine. Mix in the chips and cocoa nibs. Drop the dough by teaspoonfuls onto the prepared baking sheets - a teaspoon cookie scoop works well here. Space the cookies at least two inches apart. Bake the cookies for 8 to 9 minutes, until the surface is set, but the cookies aren’t quite fully baked. Take the cookies out of the oven and press a chocolate disk into the center of each cookie. Return the cookies to the oven for 1 to 2 minutes longer, until the chocolate begins to turn shiny and softens. Remove the cookies from the oven once again, and sprinkle the melted chocolate disk with your garnish of choice. Allow the cookies to cool right on the baking sheet until the chocolate disks are set. Store well-wrapped cookies at room temperature for a week or so; freeze for longer storage.

Reasons To Visit Local Libraries health. A 2001 study from researchers at Case Western Reserve University found that patients with Alzheimer’s disease were less active in early and middle adulthood in regard to intellectual, passive and physical activities than people who did not have the disease. Young adults and middle-aged men and
women who visit their local libraries and check out a good book might decrease their risk for cognitive decline later in life. Also, reading can improve a person’s vocabulary, even as he or she gets older. Reading for pleasure as a child has long been linked to helping young people age 16 and under develop strong
reading and math skills. But a recent study from researchers at the University of London that examined how the vocabularies of more than 9,400 people developed between the ages of 16 and 42 found that vocabulary continued to improve long after teenage years. Winter weather can be relentless and make it challenging to stay warm and dry. After a session of shoveling snow or braving the great outdoors, people may crave a meal that can quickly warm the core - especially if that meal can serve double-duty by evoking feelings of a warm climate. Popular throughout the Caribbean, this recipe for Fish and Sweet Potato Soup from “The Complete Mexican, South American, & Caribbean Cookbook” (Metro Books) by Jane Milton, Jenni Fleetwood, and Marina Filippelli matches the subtle sweetness of sweet potato and the stronger infusion of flavors from fish and oregano to make for a warm and appetizing soup.

DMVA Uses Van To Reach Veterans and apply for the benefits they have earned thanks to their service. Staffed with accredited veterans service officers, each wheelchair-accessible van is a resource to learn about a wide range of federal, state, and county benefits available to qualified veterans and their families. Such benefits might include connected disability compensation, pensions, VA health care benefits, burial benefits, education benefits,
vocational rehabilitation, DMVA’s six longterm care facilities, and more. In 2018, the vans traveled to 107 events across the state, and DMVA staff interacted with more than 1,500 veterans. DMVA’s outreach staff coordinates each event with county directors of veterans affairs, veteran service
organizations, and local and state officials to maximize publicity and attendance. To request a van for a community event and to find out where the vans will be, readers may visit DMVA’s webpage at www.veterans.pa.gov and select the Mobile Veterans Outreach Vans link.
