We are using them to support the (cast of) older kids.” Auditions were held right after Thanskgiving, and rehearsals began soon after. “We had two days of rehearsals. They had to sing and dance and perform a cold read, (which is) reading a little bit from the script (as part) of their audition.” Lynch noted that the performance at Octorara is the actual Broadway version of the play. Based on the Depression-era comic strip “Little Orphan Annie” by Harold Gray, the musical follows the title character on her journey from an orphanage on the Lower East Side in New York to a mansion on Fifth Avenue. Members of the Russellville Junior Grange are gearing up for their Italian dinner fundraiser.
all the different dietary groups,” she added. “Diabetics and people who have given up carbs for Lent appreciate the spaghetti squash.” Reyburn describes the Grange as a community service and social group that is similar to FFA and 4-H. “The Grange used to be a secret organization for farmers. Now, it is op en to anyone interested in agriculture and interested in community service,” Reyburn stated. “And it’s fun because it’s for the whole family.” S h e n o te d t h at p a s t community service projects have included serving meals at the Lighthouse Youth Center in Oxford, sponsoring a community Easter egg hunt, picking up trash on local roadways and collecting nonperishable food items for local food banks. “We also collected gift cards for the victims of the Oxford fire,” Reyburn said. All proceeds from the Italian dinner will help defray the costs of the Junior Grange’s annual s p r i n g re t re at a s we l l as summer camp. “ The spring retreat is for the Russellville kids. We go to a local camp for the weekend with a very structured schedule,” Reyburn noted. “ The state camp is held in July for kids all over Pennsylvania for a week at Camp Sylvan Hills in Howard.” She added that in order to take part in
the camps, Junior Grange members are asked to volunteer at the Italian dinner. Russellville Grange currently has 53 adult members and 15 junior members ages 5 to 14. “ The majority of our members are from Cochranville, the Parkesburg area and Coatesville, and we have a few families from Nottingham, Oxford and Lincoln University,” Reyburn pointed out, noting that adult members pay a fee to participate. “When people join, they are also joining the state and national Grange, so any dues go to them.” T he Grange accepts membership at any time. Hudson returns to YGBW YGBW has a wide reach in the county, ser ving more than 60,000 people through membership and more than 4,500 children and their families through child care ser vices. Yet there is more work to be done to ensure that the community is aware of vital services provided by the Y. Hudson hopes to inc reas e awareness o f YGBW’s mission and financial assistance program, which enabled more than 11,000 families to afford child care, youth programs, and health ser vices in 2022. Hudson also sees an opportunity to collaborate with other organizations and businesses across the community to serve teens. Above all, Hudson wants to build a path to the future for local teens,
h e l p i n g t h e m d e ve l o p their passions, discover potential careers, expand their horizons to see the world outside of their own vantage point and understand the difference they can make. Hudson attended activities at the Jennersville YMC A when she was a child. She began her Y employment journey more than 12 years ago working in spor ts, after- school enrichment and summer c a m p w h i l e at te n d i n g West Chester University. A f te r g ra d u at i o n , s h e joined YGBW as a human resources coordinator, later transitioning into youth programming to follow her passion. Girls’ rugby initiative launched
Rugby Pennsylvania, the governing body for youth and high school rugby in the state, has launched an initiative called Emerging Girls Rugby. Designed to promote and develop girls’ rugby in high schools across Pennsylvania, Emerging Girls Rugby aims to tap into girls’ potential and empower girls across the state to embrace rugby’s values of teamwork, discipline, comradery, and respect. The initiative will focus on fostering the growth and development of high school girls’ rugby programs, providing them with the resources, guidance, and support necessary to establish successful teams. Rugby Pennsylvania will work closely with schools, community partners, and interested individuals to ensure the smooth implementation of rugby programs in high schools throughout the state. Once there are 25 girls’ rugby programs operating under the Emerging Girls Rugby initiative, Rugby Pennsylvania will apply for emerging sport status with the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA). With support from the PIAA, Emerging Girls Rugby can further expand its reach, making it more accessible to young athletes statewide. High schools interested in becoming part of the Emerging Girls Rugby initiative may visit www.rugby pa.org/girlsrugby or email girlsrugby@rugbypa.org.
