Octorara field hockey team sets clothing drive, clinic

Members of the Octorara field hockey team are currently gathering donations of clothing, shoes, accessories, household items and stuffed animals.

Items are being collected on Wednesdays through May 31, weather permitting, at the blue field hockey concession stand, located next to the Octorara Elementary School,

104 Highland Road, Atglen. Items should be placed in plastic garbage bags. In the event of rain, bags should be brought back for donation on the following Wednesday.

“This is our third year collecting items (as a team fundraiser),” said field hockey coach Christina Ruth, who is also a special education teacher at Octorara Junior-Senior High School. “Last year, we collected over 400 bags.”

Pastoral team leads Parkesburg Mennonite Church

Whilemost church members turn to their pastor for leadership and guidance, congregation members at Parkesburg Mennonite Church actually benefit from a pastoral team of three, which has been put in place to meet their needs and guide them into the future.

Members of the pastoral team are James Westmoreland, former pastor at Newlinville Mennonite Church in Coatesville, and Elvin and Wendy Kennel, who are associate pastors credentialed through LMC, formerly known as the Lancaster Mennonite Conference.

The team assumed its duties on Nov. 1, 2022, to replace J.W.

Sprunger, who had to step out of ministry to care for his wife, who was dealing with a serious illness.

“We have a bishop that met with the congregation, and through it all, it became evident that the three of us would (become the pastoral team),” said Elvin. “We stepped up in new ways. We felt like the Holy Spirit was nudging each of us and saying, ‘Here is where you should be.’”

“We were already doing some leadership roles,” Wendy added. “Elvin and James had been leading worship, and I had been playing piano and doing music and visitation.”

Westmoreland was an English teacher in the Coatesville Area School District for 32 years and

served as pastor of Newlinville until it closed in 2018.

Elvin and Wendy raised their two children in the church and have been part of the church community for the last 22 years, serving in various roles in the church. Elvin is the former principal of West Fallowfield Christian School and Lancaster Mennonite High School, and Wendy is a registered nurse who spent most of her career in home health nursing.

Each has assumed his or her own roles in the church. “James preaches twice a month and I preach once a month,” said Elvin. “Wendy does worship planning and leading, and I do more of the administrative (work). We all give some pastoral care.”

Freedom Life to host Daddy-Daughter

The FL Kids Team at Freedom Life Church will host a Daddy-Daughter Dance on Friday, March 17, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The event, which will feature a ’50s Sock Hop theme, is open to girls accompanied by their fathers, grandfathers or uncles.

FL Kids director Gina Turk said this is the fifth time that the event has been hosted by the church. Because more than 260 people attended last year, the dinner and

Dance

dancing portions of the ending will be separated.

“It was tight (last year), so we are going to have dinner and dessert downstairs in the large auditorium and the dance party in the elementary auditorium,” she said. “For dinner, it will be diner style - burgers, hot dogs and fries and ice cream bars and root beer floats for dessert.”

Attendees will enjoy games and activities throughout the evening, and there will be a photo booth available.

The items will be collected by an organization that repurposes such donations and distributes them to people in need locally and worldwide. For example, clothing was recently donated to residents of Ukraine after the Russian attacks.

The following items are suitable for donating: men’s, women’s and children’s clothing and shoes; accessoriesscarves, ties, belts, wallets and handbags; household items - blankets, sheets, towels and tablecloths; and stuffed toys and animals.

The team is also planning a hockey clinic for youths in kindergarten through sixth grade on Sundays, April 23, April 30 and May 7, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Parkesburg POINT youth center, 700 Main St., Parkesburg. A fee will be charged per session.

The clinic will be run by team members, and it is open to those who reside in the Octorara Area School District, as well as surrounding districts, including Solanco, Oxford and Avon Grove. “(Presenting the clinic will be) both junior and senior high players - about 30 to 34 athletes,” noted Ruth.

All those interested in learning how to play field hockey are invited, as well as current players interested in honing their skills. “You can be someone who has never played before or an athlete

who is more skilled,” said Ruth, noting attendees will be grouped by age. “We will teach skills and fundamentals and coordination and there will be lots of fun games.”

Ruth emphasized that the clinic is open to girls and boys. “A lot of people have the

frompg 1

impression that field hockey is only for girls, but it was founded as a men’s sport,” she said.

Players are asked to wear sneakers and will need to bring a stick, shinguards, a mouthguard and water. Extra sticks will be available to use

“We will have a DJ from the church. It will be a mixture of some old music, like from ‘Happy Days,’ and some modern stuff,” she said, adding that attendees are encouraged to dress in ’50s attire.

FL Kids at Freedom Life Church is the church’s youth group. Parents help plan other events throughout the year, including a Fall Festival and Easter Extravaganza. This year’s Easter event is set for Saturday, April 8.

“We’re trying to reach the community in different ways. (The Daddy-Daughter

Dance) is something we look forward to every year, and it continues to grow,” said Turk. “It’s such a magical night as we watch beautiful young ladies … enter through our doors holding their dad’s hand. We love helping to create a special memory.”

Kabella (left), Johnny (center) and Kymber Sheets of Quarryville attended last year’s event.

The eighth annual Chocolate Festival, celebrating all things chocolate, will return to Oxford United Methodist Church (OUMC), 18 Addison St., Oxford, on Saturday, March 11, from 1 to 3 p.m. The event, being presented by Women of Faith (formerly the Oxford United Methodist Women), will feature chocolate tastings, a baking contest and children’s activities.

Organizing committee chair Patty Reese said that the event was canceled in 2021 and 2022 because of the pandemic. “We had the event on March 7, 2020, and the next week everything was shut down,” said Reese. “We are so happy to be back.”

During the event, visitors will pay a fee and receive six tickets. Each ticket will allow the person to select an item from the wide variety of chocolate treats. Additional

tickets may be purchased for a nominal fee. “Containers will be provided at the entrance when they buy their tickets,” Reese noted.

The Chocolate Festival will also feature a baking contest. Each entry must include chocolate as one ingredient. Categories to be judged are cakes/cupcakes, cookies, candy/fudge, brownies and other desserts. There is also a children’s category for bakers age 16 and under. “A lot of kids enter their little creations; it’s so cute,” said Reese.

All entrants are asked to bring a complete batch of their favorite chocolate creation in a disposable container to the church fellowship hall between 8:30 and 10 a.m. There is no fee to enter, and there is no limit on the number of entries per person.

Judging will start promptly at 10 a.m. After judging is complete, volunteers will prepare

separate servings that will be arranged on tables for ticket holders to select.

At 2 p.m., ribbons will be awarded for first, second and third places, as well as honorable mention, in each category. A special prize basket will go to the entry determined to be Best in Show.

Other features of the Chocolate Festival will include a Kids’ Cookie Corner, where youngsters can decorate their own cookies, and candy jar contests, where visitors will be challenged to guess the number of candies in each jar. “There will be three jars this year, and the winners will get to bring the candy home,” Reese noted.

Proceeds from the Chocolate Festival will be used by the Women of Faith group, which distributes money to many different mission projects throughout the year, “We make donations near and far,” Reese said. “We have

helped people in the Ukraine and donated (locally) to the Oxford Area Neighborhood Services Center. We help out everyone in need.”

OUMC is located at the corner of Market and Addison streets in Oxford. For more information about the event, call the church office at 610932-9698 or visit www.face book.com/PastorBern/events.

Those who visit the festival may also preorder homemade Easter eggs, which will be available in four varieties: peanut butter, coconut, butter cream and chocolate nut.

In explaining why Eric Metaxas was chosen as the speaker for the Linville Hill Christian School spring banquet, head of school Matt Buckwalter quoted the school’s mission statement. “Linville Hill is a community of faith where students learn to think deeply about who God is as they discover their God-given purpose in preparation for a lifetime of service to the King,” said Buckwalter. Explaining that a few of the author’s many books are utilized in the high school curriculum, Buckwalter added, “(Metaxas’ words) help students think about looking back to those who’ve gone before us for answers to (the question), ‘How do we live in a time when maybe the prevailing values of the culture are out of sync with the heroes of faith from old?’ We need someone who can help draw our young people back to those voices.”

Metaxas will be the featured speaker at the Linville Hill 2023 spring banquet on Tuesday, March 28, at Beechdale Farms, 458 Beechdale

Road, Bird-in-Hand. A meetand-greet will be held from 5 to 5:45 p.m. Appetizers will be served at 5:15 p.m., and dinner, which will feature pot roast and chicken cordon bleu, will begin at 6 p.m.

Metaxas is a New York Times best-selling author, known for his books “If You Can Keep It,” “Bonhoeffer,” and “Amazing Grace,” among others. He has also appeared as a cultural commentator on CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC, and he is the host of “The Eric Metaxas Show,” a daily syndicated radio program.

Buckwalter heard Metaxas speak twice since fall of 2022, and he was impressed.

“Metaxas is a voice that is so important for our church and communities to hear,” said Buckwalter, who noted an effort is underway to provide sponsorship for the banquet to the pastors of the 70 congregations represented by Linville students. Delving into Metaxas’ past, Buckwalter pointed out that the author’s parents were immigrants from Greece and Germany who met in an English class. “(Metaxas) has a very tangible grip on what

America stands for (because) his family came here for that,” said Buckwalter, who called Metaxas a “phenomenal historian.” Buckwalter also noted that Metaxas’ most recent book, “A Letter to the American Church,” is “a wake-up call for

Pastoral team frompg 1

Sunday school is held at the church at 9:30 a.m., followed by the 10:30 a.m. worship service.

“It is a warm, personal mixture of contemporary and traditional elements,” said Elvin.

The church’s outreach activities include offering a GriefShare program; providing support to Parkesburg Churches Community Outreach (PCCO), the Parkesburg POINT youth center and the Octorara Area Food Cupboard; and sponsoring a Girl Scout troop. It also offers a monthly Sew-MuchLove group, which is currently making comforters for the Mennonite Central Committee, and it holds a Soup and Prayer program every other Thursday during Lent.

So far, the pastoral team has come together to lead the church. “We are all open to working together and finding

our way together,” said Elvin. “It is interesting how people have different relationships, connections and gifts.”

“We are learning and growing and that’s all you can ask for,” Westmoreland added.

Linville Hill was started by a group of local families nearly 80 years ago. The elementary school at 295 S. Kinzer Road, Paradise, currently serves kindergarten through fifth grade. The upper school, which now serves grades six through 12, is located at 835 Houston Run, Gap. The upper school was first envisioned in 2016, with an internship program as a central feature. The program takes students to local businesses and organizations for six hours

each Friday for 12 weeks in the fall semester and again in the spring. The program took off with 30 students the first semester it was offered. The two campuses now have an enrollment of 480 students.

Sponsorships and tickets are available at www.linvillehill.org or at http://one.bidpal.net /lhcsspring23.

The Pennsylvania Campground Owners Association (PCOA) released the 2023 edition of the “Pennsylvania Campground Directory” in January. This free, four-color glossy magazine lists 215 campgrounds and RV resorts in Pennsylvania. In addition to RV and tent sites, over half the Pennsylvania campgrounds also have cabin, cottage, or trailer rentals.

The annual PCOA Directory divides the state into eight geographic regions with maps, color-coding, and detailed facility listings for PCOA member campgrounds within each region. Each member of the association is listed, with the name, mailing address, phone numbers, website address, access directions, and number of sites, as well as a listing of facilities available. Eight detailed maps are included.

The directory can be found at campgrounds, RV dealerships, chambers of commerce, visitors’ bureaus, and Pennsylvania information centers. A large number are distributed at 35 RV shows across the northeastern United States. RV and camping enthusiasts can order the 68-page booklet directly by visiting www.pacamping.com or call the association office at 610-767-5026.

PCOA is an association of private campground owners dedicated to the advancement of family camping. The group is an affiliate of the National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds, which represents 3,000 commercial parks throughout the United States.

Photographic history

For Gap resident Brett Snyder, acting vice president with the Historical Society of Salisbury Township, history is not merely a hobby. Snyder’s business, PASTpaper.com, deals in rare magazines and other vintage paper items. Snyder first became interested in the life of noted Lancastrian H. Clifton Thorbahn about 10 years ago when he came across some photos and clippings of the man mounted on a board. “It was band and orchestra stuff and WGAL radio photos,” said Snyder. “I thought, ‘There’s a story there,’ but I put it aside.’” A year ago, Snyder’s work brought him some copies of Lancaster Magazine, published from the 1950s to the 1970s. “The editor and owner was a guy named Thorbahn,” recalled Snyder. “I thought, ‘I know this name.’ I looked at the scrapbook boards, and it was all his stuff.”

Snyder will present the results of his research into Thorbahn’s life in the New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS) program titled “H. Clifton Thorbahn: Lancaster Jazz Pioneer, Historian, Editor, and Publisher” on Thursday, March 16, at 7 p.m. in the chapel at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. The public is invited to attend.

“When I started putting it all together, I thought, ‘What a fascinating life this guy had,’” said Snyder of Thorbahn, who as a young man played checkers with Groucho

H. Clifton Thorbahn (center) was the director of Lancaster’s first jazz band.

Marx and then started one of the first jazz bands in Lancaster. “The band went on tour and played Warren G. Harding’s inaugural ball,” reported Snyder. When Thorbahn returned to Lancaster, he managed other bands. Snyder noted that Thorbahn also played the piano at silent movie theaters. “He was one of those guys who could play any song,” said Snyder, who added that Thorbahn’s father was orchestra director for the Lancaster schools.

“There was a lot of music (talent) in the family,” Snyder said.

Thorbahn also dabbled in education, serving as assistant principal at Salisbury High School and principal of Strasburg High School. In the summer of 1926, Thorbahn moved in a different direction when he cowrote the Lancaster Pageant of Liberty, which was held at Franklin & Marshall. “It was a big historical pageant about Lancaster and the American Revolution,” said Snyder, who noted that the show featured 600 singers and 400 dancers. Thorbahn segued into working for WGAL radio, where he produced, directed, and acted.

In addition to musical talents, Thorbahn began working in publishing, creating the first tourist guide for the Lancaster County, and writing history features for Lancaster Sunday
