After a four-year absence, West Fallowfield Christian School (WFCS) is bringing back its popular potpie dinner in a new format. The dinner, set for Friday, March 20, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the school, will now be served restaurant-style, with additional servings brought upon request. The meal will include homemade chicken potpie, pepper cabbage, applesauce, a fruit cup, a roll and butter, a choice of beverage and chocolate or vanilla cake for dessert. The meal will be served by teachers, students and volunteers. “It’s all-youcan-eat. Our waiters and waitresses will bring you a refill of everything you want,” said Heather Olseski, who is organizing the event along with Heather Herr and other volunteers.
“We wanted to try to get away from serving family-style. Everything will come individually portioned, and you can ask for more.” The previous version of the potpie dinner was a popular fall event held in conjunction with the school’s annual benefit auction. Over the years, the two events required so many volunteer hours in one weekend that the potpie meal was discontinued. “Doing potpie and auction on the same weekend required an army of people,” WFCS principal Robbie Martin said, explaining the reason for eliminating the potpie dinner. “The hope had always been that we would reignite it.” As time went on, people realized how much they missed the potpie dinner experience, particularly the connection it provided between the school and the community. According to Tim Rogers, lead pastor of Grace Point Church in Paradise, the idea of meeting on a front porch should evoke thoughts of easy conversation. “When we think of a front porch, we

think of people talking casually and enjoying company together,” said Rogers. “You’re meeting each other, beginning conversation, and having some fun. That’s what people do on the front porch. They talk, engage, and learn about each other.” That atmosphere is what Grace Point strives to create with Front Porch, an effort aimed at providing a relational and relaxed environment for area residents to discuss matters of faith. Front Porch will meet on Wednesdays through See Front Porch pg 2
Tim Rogers (far left), pastor of Grace Point Church, leads a group attending the Front Porch when it was first held at Pequea Valley Intermediate School. Currently, the conversational gathering for discussing matters of faith meets at the Together Community Center on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m.

traditions observed in the various churches. “Some of that traditions are so different in history and practice; we really do learn from one another,” he observed. “Another great thing that has happened is that we have seen a lot of learning across black and white churches. Those worshipping styles tend to be different, and that has been beneficial for all of our members. As we learn about other denominations, it broadens our respective awareness.” All Christian churches are welcome to participate and join the ministerium. experiences. “It’s people just talking and quickly getting into (related topics),” he shared, adding that many participants will discuss their own faith stories and past histories and where they stand now with faith. As an example, Rogers recalled a Front Porch meeting where he discussed Jesus as the Light of the World. “I opened Front Porch by saying, ‘Go around and share your name and tell me one time when you were afraid of the dark or you scared someone in the dark,’” said Rogers, who added that the question generated some amusing stories. Following the opening question, Rogers asked group members to talk about a time when they were in the dark and had to make a decision or in a season of life when they were not sure what the future held or had lost a relationship or lost direction or were disillusioned or discouraged. “I (brought) in where John introduced Jesus as the Light of the World and asked, ‘What does that mean?’” continued Rogers, who said that the discussion
progressed to what that means in daily life and in practical ways for dealing with discouragement, depression, hurt, or shame. In offering a comfortable environment in which to discuss matters of faith, Grace Point is reaching beyond church walls. “We know there are people in our community who have questions about faith and spiritual matters (but) who don’t have a place or aren’t sure where to go to have those questions addressed,” said Rogers. “There are so many good churches in our area, but speaking for Grace Point, it’s not enough to open our doors and say, ‘You’re welcome to come in.’ We need to go and engage in conversation with people where they live and engage with the world.” Petersheim agreed, noting that part of Grace Point’s vision is to be “a transforming presence in the town square.” “That’s what drives us,” he said. Readers who have questions about Front Porch may visit www.gracepointparadise.com/ ministries/grace-point-front -porch or call the church at 717-687-7971.

During the gathering, which is led by Rogers or Greg Petersheim, executive pastor of discipleship at Grace Point, discussion centers around the topic of the previous Sunday’s sermon reformatted for a conversational
environment. “On Wednesday night, we have that same content, but it isn’t preached,” explained Rogers. Instead, the topic will be boiled down to a few questions that are designed to spur discussion, which allows for group dynamics, which lead to laughs. Rogers noted that the conversation often leads to members of the group discussing shared

The Downingtown Area Ministerium recently announced the schedule for this year’s Lenten worship services and church luncheons. As part of the annual program, which began on March 4, area churches will offer 30-minute ecumenical prayer services on Wednesdays during Lent at noon. A service will also take place at noon on Good Friday, April 10. The services will not offer Communion, but prayer, hymns and a homily are included. In addition, the hosting church provides a community luncheon immediately following the worship service. There will be no luncheon on Good Friday. The services are free and open to the community and a freewill offering will be received. All donations collected during the worship services for 2020 will be forwarded to Communities That Care of Greater Downingtown (CTCGD), an area coalition working to foster positive mental health and youth development. The following Wednesday services have been scheduled: March 11 - Messiah Lutheran
Church, 46 W. Lancaster Ave., Downingtown; March 18 - St. James’ Episcopal Church, 409 E. Lancaster Ave., Downingtown; March 25 - Glen Moore United Methodist Church (UMC), 1920 Creek Road, Glenmoore; and April 1 - St. Joseph’s Parish Downingtown, 332 Manor Ave. There will be no service during on April 8 during Holy Week. The Rev. John Symonds, rector of St. James’ Episcopal Church in Downingtown and convener of the Downingtown Area Ministerium, noted that Messiah Lutheran Church and Glen Moore UMC are new to the worship schedule this Lenten season. The series will conclude on April 10 when Downingtown UMC, 751 E. Lancaster Ave., Downingtown, will host the Good Friday community service. During the service, all of the participating churches within the ministerium will be represented by clergy and lay leaders. The Downingtown Area Ministerium is a collective of clergy members and church lay leaders who re-formed the organization three years ago. Its mission, according to Symonds, is “to share in area ministries and

fellowship, offer ecumenical services for the community, to assist one another in awareness and outreach efforts and to serve as an informational clearinghouse for one another.” In addition to those already mentioned, the ministerium includes Central Presbyterian Church, Downingtown; Greater Deliverance Church, Coatesville; Mount Raymond Union African Methodist Episcopal Church, Downingtown; Romansville United Methodist Church; and Thorndale United Methodist Church. The ministerium meets at member churches on the second Tuesday of the month at 12:30 p.m. for a luncheon meeting. “Sometimes we have speakers and we oftentimes talk about any opportunities for combined community outreach,” Symonds noted. “In fact, that’s how we all realized that there was a perceived need in working to improve the lives of young people - children and youths. (During the Lenten services,) rather than each respective church collecting a freewill offering for a charity of their choice, we came together and combined our resources to direct all the freewill offerings to one group (CTCGD).” Symonds said that ministerium members also learn about

Income Tax Prep from pg 1 Joyce Hanson has been a volunteer income tax preparer with Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), a free tax preparation service administered by the United Way, for about eight years. Seated at a computer in the VITA Paradise location in the Together Community Center (TCC), Hanson said she hopes area residents who qualify will come in to have their taxes completed for a variety of reasons. “The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) funds (VITA) for accurate returns, but clients (who use VITA services) may pay less tax or get money back,” said Hanson, who explained that completing forms with regard to education and child credits can be daunting. “We are aware of those credits that are complicated to complete,” she noted, adding that because the VITA service is free, clients will get to keep more of money they get back from the IRS should they rate a return, rather than having to pay a tax preparation service.
VITA will offer free tax return preparation at TCC, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on Thursdays from 5 to 9 p.m. through Tuesday, April 14. According to Cliff Mast, who has been preparing taxes with VITA at TCC for four years, the Paradise location opened on Jan. 28. “No one could file electronically until (Jan. 27),” said Mast. “A lot of companies aren’t required to get all the information out until the end of (January).” To qualify for free tax preparation, a taxpayer can earn up to $62,000 a year. Mast explained that residents who qualify financially but have rental income or large investments cannot have taxes prepared at the location. “We can handle self-employed (clients) as long as there is no inventory,” explained Mast. The Paradise location served 280 clients in 2018 and 320 clients in 2019. Mast hopes 350 area residents benefit from the service in 2020. “Last year, the county saw about 11,000
(clients),” he noted. “We’re looking to reach 11,500 this year.” According to Mast, the average income of VITA clients is $22,000 to $25,000. “We probably only see a quarter of the people who could use our services,” he said. Taxpayers who feel they may qualify for services can call 211 to make an appointment. “Say, ‘I want to get my taxes done by VITA,’” instructed Mast, who added that 211 operators can discuss available tax preparation sites and times. “(The operator will) make sure (the clients bring) last year’s returns with them, their Social Security card, a photo ID, and any and all pertinent information,” said Mast. The Paradise location has eight volunteers, but Mast noted that the site can always use more. “The volunteer process starts back in the summer,” said Mast, noting that VITA holds informational meetings from late August into October and training sessions from November into January. “Everyone takes online testing that is implemented by the
IRS,” said Mast, who noted that both basic and advanced certifications are offered. “Volunteers can choose how far they want to go in their accreditation,” he said. All tax forms completed by VITA are reviewed. Mast reported an overall 95% accuracy when returns are reviewed. Mast encourages area tax payers not to wait to make an appointment to have their taxes completed, adding that those who are familiar with The Factory Ministries, which is housed in TCC, could call the front desk at 717687-9594 to make an appointment. Readers may also visit www.FreeTaxPrepLancaster.org. Pictured on front: Joyce Hanson (left) and Cliff Mast will be working together with other volunteers to provide free tax preparation services at the Together Community Center in Paradise through Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, better known as VITA. VITA will be taking appointments through April 14.

large pieces of fabric and then knotting or hand-tying the two pieces together. Students used different materials to create the blankets, including some that were especially designed for children. “Cozies 4 Chemo has instructions listed on their website along with a video tutorial,” Saunders explained. “Each classroom was given printed instructions, cutting templates, fabric, scissors, a link to the video and a fleece no-sew blanket kit we purchased from JoAnn Fabrics.” Students worked on the project throughout CSW, celebrated from Jan. 26 to 31. “Teachers set up a blanket workspace in their classrooms and had students take turns completing the blankets during the day,” shared Saunders. “All students from prekindergarten to eighth grade participated.” Saunders noted that the teachers explained to the students what the blankets were for and how they would be used. “The teachers explained that the blankets will go to help cancer patients,” said Saunders. “The blankets help provide warmth and comfort during a difficult time.” According to www.cozies4 chemo.org, the nonprofit organization, based in New Jersey, provides hand-tied fleece blankets to cancer patients throughout the United States and abroad. It was founded by 12-year-old Meghan Vizard, who wanted to give a fleece blanket to her cousin as a way to provide her comfort during chemotherapy. Since the organization’s formation in March 2012, it has donated more than 10,200 blankets. Sportsman Event from pg 1 CJ Winand, a wildlife biologist at Bowhunter Magazine, will be the featured speaker during the 12th annual Sportsman Event being presented on Saturday, March 14, by the Outdoorsman Ministry Group at the Christian Life Center (CLC) in Lincoln University. The event will take place for the first time at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church, 109 Gypsy Hill Road, Landenberg. “CLC now has a Saturday night service, so we were seeking a big enough place (for the Sportsman Event) that would house over 300 people. Cornerstone, which is only 5 miles away, offered to partner with us,” said event organizer Steve Shuster. “We are the hosting church, and they are helping us and letting us use their facility. It’s a beautiful thing to have two churches involved.” In addition to the speaker, the evening will include a traditional covered dish dinner of wild game items, a silent auction and a display of outdoor products. All attendees will also be entered into a drawing to win door prizes. Doors for the event will open at 4 p.m. Dinner, as well as the silent auction, will run from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. Winand’s presentation will begin at 6:45 p.m., followed by the announcement of door prize winners and silent
auction winners. The Sportsman Event is open to all, including women and children. In addition to outdoor gear and hunting equipment, non-hunting items such as theater tickets and restaurant gift cards will be included in the silent auction. This is the first time that Winand will speak at the local event. In addition to writing for Bowhunter Magazine, he contributes to North American Hunter Magazine and is a member of the hunting adviser staff at ScentLok, API Outdoors and Realtree Camo. He is also the featured seminar speaker on the NRA’s Great American Hunters Tour. Winand recently received Quality Deer Management Association’s first Signpost Award for his contributions as an outdoor journalist to circulate accurate information on biologically sound deer management. “Over the years, I have had a relationship with or heard of most of the speakers,” said Shuster. “(In this case, Winand) came to me four years ago and said, ‘I am a wildlife biologist and would love to tell my story and share my journey.’ The next two years were booked, so I penciled him in for 2020. He fits in perfectly with what we are trying to do.” An admission fee for attendees age 12 and over will help cover the cost of the facility and speaker. Also, attendees are asked to
Men’s Breakfast! bring a covered dish, dessert or side dish in a quantity to feed at least eight people. For food safety, hot covered dishes must be prepared on the day of the event and be at a safe internal temperature. Electrical outlets will be available for slow cookers. Prizes will be awarded to the first-, second- and third-place winners as determined by a panel of judges. All proceeds from the event will go toward a youth archery program, which is held at the CLC every fall. Reservations for the Sportsman Event are requested and may be made at www.clc-sportsman-event.ticketleap.com/ sportsman-event. A link to order tickets is also available at www.clcfamily.church. Isaacson will present “How to Be the Best You Can Be at Any Age.” Abandoned as a toddler in Nazi Germany, American-born Eleanor Isaacson survived bombings, starvation, Russian occupation, and a stint as a child smuggler all before reaching her teens. Escaping just as the Iron Curtain closed, she soon discovered that the U.S. held as much pain and rejection as the life that she had escaped. Deafness and solitude would become the catalyst leading to womanhood and a love of dance. In the process, she would discover God. Our dream is to try to get potpie back to the fall where it was before,” Olseski said. “It was a spur-of-themoment thing to get it together (this year) to not let another year go by.” “One of the things that has come out loud and clear for us is we have to go back to go forward. We’ve kind of lost a little bit of touch with the community, and potpie really used to provide that,” Martin said. “We’d like to reignite it because we’d like to reconnect with people that we haven’t seen for a while. We really didn’t want to wait for the fall. That was too long. We thought we’d give it a kickoff in the spring, but eventually it will make its way back to the fall.”

A pair of grade school buddies who went on to found Victory Brewing Company have been chosen by the Chester County Economic Development Council (CCEDC) for induction into the Chester County Business Hall of Fame. Victory Brewing co-founders Bill Covaleski and Ron Barchet will be honored at the CCEDC’s annual Business Achievement Award Dinner, which will be attended by more than 400 of the region’s top business leaders, on Wednesday, April 1, at the historic Phoenixville Foundry. The public is invited to attend, and sponsorships are available. To register for the event, readers may visit www.eventbrite.com and search for “2020 CCEDC Business Achievement Award Dinner.” Covaleski and Barchet trace their partnership back to 1973, when they met on a school bus as fifth-graders and became friends. They remained so, even as they grew up and went to college on opposite coasts. Beer would bring
them together as adults during friendly home brewing competitions that became so sophisticated, the pair decided to leave their corporate careers to study with the best in the brewing industry. They brought that knowledge back home to Chester County to create Victory Brewing Company, which now employs more than 300 people in the state of Pennsylvania, including Downingtown, Parkesburg and Kennett Square. Victory’s expansion continues with plans to open another location at Philadelphia’s Logan Square later this year that is expected to add 100 full- and part-time jobs. Victory Brewing Company’s success is also noteworthy in the communities it serves. The company organizes volunteer efforts throughout the year, including during last year’s Brandywine River Clean-Up with the Brandywine Red Clay Alliance. Victory employees also plant crops at Pete’s Produce Farm to benefit the Chester County Food Bank,

“We are honored to receive a 2020 Rare Impact Award from NORD,” Heaps remarked. “Although the award is specifically honoring our leadership team, we accept it on behalf of everyone who contributes to CSC, including our staff, board, supporters, volunteers, and, most importantly, patient families. The groundbreaking and innovative work that started over 30 years ago and continues today is not possible without the effort and participation of many incredible people.” The CSC is a nonprofit organization that provides primary clinical care and advanced laboratory services to children and adults who have genetic or other complex disorders. Founded in 1989, CSC provides services to about 1,100 active patients and is recognized as a world leader in translational and precision medicine. The organization is primarily supported through community fundraising events and donations. CSC supporters typically host several auctions throughout Pennsylvania and Ohio each year to raise funds for the clinic. A new fundraiser has been added to the calendar. Kumme Essa, named for the Pennsylvania Dutch phrase for “come eat,” will be held on Thursday, April 2, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Springside Barn, 1294 Weaverland Road, East Earl. The Pennsylvania Dutchinspired dinner will feature a twist on a traditional Amish wedding meal served family-style by members of the Plain community in a restored barn. The evening will include remarks from CSC physicians and clients’ families as well as a live auction. Platinum-level sponsors will also have an opportunity to share a few comments during the program. There is a cost to attend Kumme Essa, and reservations are requested by Thursday, March 19. Special pricing for groups of eight or more people are available through the sponsorship packages. Tickets may be purchased at https://clinicforspecialchildren.org /events/dinner/, or individuals may stop by the clinic. For more information on sponsorship opportunities, readers may contact Seitz at 717-687-9407 or eseitz@clinicforspecialchildren.org. To learn more about the CSC, individuals may visit https://clinic forspecialchildren.org.
