Food Cupboard Serves The Octorara Community are asked to declare their income and meet eligibility requirements. “Ninety-five percent of the people that come through here absolutely need to be here,” Dougherty said. “They’re getting help, and nobody’s judging them.” The Octorara Area Food Cupboard is 100 percent volunteer. The cupboard works with the Chester County Food Bank, receiving food from it, the government and private donations. “The needs are tremendous because the number of people is tremendous. We never send anybody out without food,” Dougherty said. The generosity of the community has helped the food cupboard greatly. In February, the organization held a soup donation challenge with the goal of collecting 1,800 cans of soup. Meeting the goal would mean each family served by the food cupboard could go home with two extra cans of soup. See Food Cupboard pg 5

Hunger is a problem facing many families and individuals of all ages. Fortunately, the Octorara Area Food Cupboard is there to help. The nonprofit food cupboard serves 880 households that are food insecure in the Octorara Area School District. Director Judy Dougherty said people may find themselves short on food for a wide variety of reasons. Some people may have a short-term need to get through a few weeks, while others may have a continuing issue. “If somebody needs food, we’re going to try to give it,” she said. All interaction with the food cupboard is strictly confidential. Those seeking assistance are asked to bring photo identification and some form of address verification, such as an envelope or bill addressed to their home. Proof of income is not required, but applicants

There is still time to register for the Brandywine YMCA’s Girls on the Run (GOTR) and STRIDE programs, which are 12-week physical fitness and educational sessions that culminate in the completion of a 5K run/walk. The programs were scheduled to begin on March 11, and registrations will be accepted until Friday, March 15. It is not necessary to be a YMCA member to participate. As part of the GOTR and STRIDE programs, youths will meet two times a week for 90 minutes at area schools through Friday, May 31, to prepare for the 5K, scheduled for Saturday, June 1. GOTR focuses on building self-esteem and promoting emotional and physical health in young girls. STRIDE, which stands for Success + Teamwork + Respect + Inspiration + Determination = Excellence in Character, was developed for boys in response to the successful GOTR program. “Girls on the Run is a national program and has been around for 23 years, 12 years in Chester County,” noted Kathryn Gute, program coordinator. “STRIDE

Kauppila said that LIFT is designed to develop and deepen faith through studying the Bible and through worship. “The curriculum that we are using is really about families being able to walk through the Bible together,” she said. “The fact that it’s (being held) in the sanctuary and that it’s intergenerational and it includes the sacrament of Communion makes it really different.” In a program summary provided to the congregation, pastor Susan Lynch explained that the decision to revamp the Sunday school program at the church has been a four-year process. “One of the things that our

opportunity this season to be running a team out of the American Helicopter Museum,” explained Gute. “The meetings are lessons led by trained volunteer coaches who are following an evidence-based curriculum that incorporates running and other physical activities into the practice of lessons in the areas of building confidence, character development, self-empowerment, decision making, goal setting, leadership, etc.” Gute noted that a portion of each meeting includes physical activity. “During the 90-minute sessions for GOTR and 75 minutes for STRIDE, a portion of that is spent running or walking if the child is not yet comfortable with running,” said Gute. “It is an outdoor program; however, most of the schools allow us to use some indoor space if necessary (in the case of) inclement weather.” The culminating event is the Chester County Girls on the Run 5K & YMCA STRIDE 5K Challenge. “Our spring 5K brings in about 2,500 people; most are participants of the programs and their families,” said Gute, adding, “The kids can definitely walk if they would like. Many do.”

There is a fee to participate in both programs. The fee includes the 20 evidence-based curricular lessons led by trained volunteer coaches over the course of the 12-week season, training and entry for the season-culminating 5K, a program shirt and water bottle and a 5K shirt. Among the schools participating in the programs this spring are Bradford Heights, Brandywine Wallace, Lionville, Springton Manor, West Bradford, Exton, Octorara, Kings Highway, Rainbow, Pope John Paul II and Pickering Valley elementary schools, as well as Octorara Middle School and the Marsh Creek Sixth Grade Center. Students in the fashion merchandising program at Immaculata University (IU) will sponsor a fashion show, “Spring Into Prom,” on Saturday, March 23, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the Great Hall at IU, 1145 W. King Road, Immaculata. The fashion show is a fundraiser to support high school girls who cannot afford to buy a prom dress. The evening will feature hors d’oeuvres, vendors, hair and makeup demonstrations, prizes and live music by Three and One. A local salon and Wings for Success, a nonprofit organization that supplies work-appropriate

attire to women in need, are allowing high school girls to borrow prom dresses for their special night at no charge. In addition, guests may also donate new and lightly used prom dresses on the night of the fashion show. The latest prom designs and cultural formal wear will be showcased on the runway along with a collection of dresses designed by IU’s fashion merchandising students. Christian education (committee) and youth ministry team have been aware of for quite a while is that our traditional model of Sunday school has not been working well for our young families. Our young families need us to try a different model of faith formation,” Lynch stated. “They are also aware that there are a number of folks in our congregation, including our young family members, who are hungry for a different, more contemporary style of worship. We believe that LIFT will meet both of these needs.” Lynch also listed the potential benefits of the program. “Research consistently shows that faith formation in children happens most effectively when children are learning with and from their parents. In other words, having children and parents learning side by

side works,” she stated. Lynch said the decision to offer the new program may be risky, but that the church is required to change and adapt to the needs of the faithful. “The Christian education and youth ministry team of our congregation is courageously stepping forward in faith to lead us in a new venture, one they hope will both pass the faith on to the next generation and build the faith of adults in our community,” she said. “We’re excited to offer something new and different, and (we) hope it meets the needs of families in our church and families in our area,” Kauppila added. Kacie’s Kloset occupies a room at the Octorara JuniorSenior High School, which is stocked with formal and semiformal dresses and menswear, as well as shoes, jewelry, purses and any other accessories needed to make a perfect prom outfit. Sizes generally range from 2 to 16, with a few larger and smaller. Garments in a wide range of colors, fabrics and styles from traditional to contemporary are available. Clothing in Kacie’s Kloset comes from community donations. To add to the racks this year, Freedom Life Christian Center recently donated more than 100 dresses. This is the fourth year for the annual fashion show, which showcases some of the prom dresses and accessories that can be found in Kacie’s Kloset. Students may purchase clothing by donating nonperishable food items. The food collected through the dress sales is then given to the Octorara Area Food Cupboard. A fashion show of dresses available at Kacie’s Kloset will be held during the school day on March 15 for students to see some of the selection available and let them know that they may be able to find their ideal prom gown right on campus. A second fashion show, open to the entire community, will be held later from 6 to 7 p.m. in the multipurpose room at the Octorara Junior-Senior High School, 226 Highland Road, Atglen. There is no fee to attend the fashion show. This year, parents and guardians of the models have been asked to write something special about their son or

daughter that will be read while the model walks down the red carpet. The Girls Run the World Club, which has grown to 25 members, is led by adult volunteers Tina O’Connor and Debra Wentz. Students from the club help staff Kacie’s Kloset each Tuesday, plus they take on a wide range of activities that aim to promote confidence and a positive self-image. They also serve in their community, including a regular monthly visit to Harrison House in Christiana, where they do a craft and activity with the senior residents. “We have many more girls this year,” O’Connor said, noting that the program is a positive experience for the students. “They’re connecting with each other. They’re a diverse group of girls getting to know each other, and they’re not students that they usually would hang out with during the day. They’re really making an effort to accept each other.” “I’ve seen these girls settle in and deal with the issues that are going on on their own and problem solve,” school counselor Kate Dill said. “I see friendships created within the club.” The club teaches self-esteem while caring for others. “All the things that we’re teaching them here and they’re learning, they are able to apply it in their everyday lives,” O’Connor said. “As their confidence grows, they’re going to pass that on to other girls.” For more information about the prom fashion show, readers may search for “Kacie’s Cause Parkesburg Chapter” on Facebook.

The food cupboard is open on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to noon and 2 to 4 p.m. as well as on Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to noon and 3 to 7 p.m. Food donations may also be dropped off at the Parkesburg Borough office, 315 W. As it turned out, the community responded with donations of 3,655 cans of soup, so each family received four extra cans of soup to help them keep warm in the wintry weather. The soup drive was embraced by students at the Octorara Primary Learning Center, who challenged themselves to collect enough soup to build towers of cans taller than their teachers. The children reached their goal, collecting 780 cans of soup. “This is the first time we’ve done something, and set a goal, and it’s just gone over and above,” Dougherty said. “What I like about Parkesburg and the area - when you put out a plea for something, it comes through full force.” The food cupboard depends on donations to carry on its regular operations. Donated food items are always appreciated as are monetary donations, which are used to help cover expenses to keep the building operating and to purchase supplemental food items such as meats or to fill in when supplies run low. “When I picked up the script (for a read-through), I laughed multiple times,” Promise Players community Christian theater group director Doreen Creighton said of choosing this spring’s play, “Mobile Home Sweet Home” by Pat Cook. “There’s a lot of sarcasm, and Tim (Strawser) pulls it off very well.” At the center of it all is Strawser’s character, Loff DuVall, who has run the Hampton Court trailer park with his wife, May June (Linda Ross), for more years than he can count. Loff is hoping to take May June on a vacation to escape the zaniness of the residents. Vonell Rafferty (Laura Scott-Wise) tries multiple income schemes, the latest of which is searching for treasure with a metal detector. Lydia Spagway (Melody Risser) needs help removing her grandchild’s hand from where it is stuck in a toilet. Rhonda DeFalco (Wanda Jenkins) just wants to gossip, and Goose Halford (Ken Hess) tells long stories, such as how his grandpa has a metal plate in his head. “The kids used to catch him asleep and put ‘frigerator magnets on his forehead,” Goose relates to Loff. Compounding the stress is a request from Loff ’s future

daughter-in-law, Anne (Christine Tedesco), who wants to film a reality television show in Hampton Court. And, to add insult to injury, Etta Frobisher (Creighton) has it in for Hampton Court. “She’s being nitpicky and trying to find anything to get this shut down,” Creighton said of her character. “She’s bossy and hungry for power. She’s just a bully.” Frobisher is not any kinder to her younger sister, Edith Maxwell, who is played by Creighton’s reallife older sister, Karen Ungemach. Ungemach is also a volunteer at the organization that will be benefited by the proceeds from the show’s performances. Formed in 2016 in response to a need to go beyond offering emergency shelter, Elizabethtown Community Housing & Outreach Services (ECHOS) provides services to end the cycle of poverty while transforming the lives of families and individuals. Using the Housing First model, ECHOS assists individuals and families experiencing homelessness, at-risk of homelessness, or in need of services who are already connected with the Elizabethtown area, including Elizabethtown, Rheems, Bainbridge, Mount Joy, Marietta, and Maytown.

“You have to be sympathetic (to the people we serve),” Ungemach commented. “I’m so fortunate to have a home, but in other circumstances I could be there (where our clients are).” Compassion is key when interacting with folks in need, as well as with anyone in general, and that is a message that comes through in “Mobile Home Sweet Home.” “It’s about relationships and not judging people,” said musical director Nancy Snyder, who will also appear in the show as Jennifer Crown. “Mobile Home Sweet Home” will be presented at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster. Performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 28; Fridays, March 22 and 29; Saturdays, March 23 and 30; and Sunday, March 24. Matinees will start at 2:30 p.m. on March 23 and 30 and on Sunday, March 31. The doors will open one hour prior to show time. Child care for preschoolers will be offered during the shows. Ordering tickets in advance is recommended, and readers may do so at www.promiseplayers.org. To learn more about ECHOS, folks may visit www.echoslancaster.org.

AAUW Member from pg 1 Several members of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) West Chester Chester County Branch recently celebrated the 105th birthday of branch member Mary Pinkney. A celebratory luncheon was held at Kendal-Crosslands Communities in Kennett Square. Pinkney, an AAUW member since 1968, has been very active in AAUW and in the community, advancing equity for women through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research. She wrote biographies of West Chester-area women of note for “Pennsylvania Women in History, Our Hidden Heritage,” published in 1983 by the Pennsylvania Division of AAUW. Her branch activities earned her an Outstanding Woman Award, and she was twice recognized with a named gift to the AAUW Educational Foundation. A sports enthusiast, she

taught white water canoeing on the Brandywine River and windsurfing at Marsh Creek State Park in Downingtown after she lobbied to get state regulations changed so windsurfing boards could be registered as boats, rather than water toys. She windsurfed around the world with her husband, and she won first place in the Women’s Master Class in the Windsurfer World Championships in Japan in her 60s. Founded in 1959, AAUW West Chester - Chester County was organized by faculty from West Chester University - formerly West Chester State Teachers College - and community leaders. According to http://wccc -pa.aauw.net, the organization’s mission is to “advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research.” The chapter meets on the second

Wednesday of each month from September through May at 7 p.m. at Grove United Methodist Church, 490 W. Boot Road, West Chester. The chapter serves Chadds Ford, Coatesville, Downingtown, Exton, Kennett Square, Malvern, Paoli, West Chester and neighboring communities. For more information, readers may visit the aforementioned website or search for “AAUW Chester County PA” on Facebook. Pictured on front:

The Well Offers Programming For People Of All Ages By Francine Fulton

A support group, a men’s Bible study, English as a Second Language (ESL) classes and an afterschool program for youths are some of the activities taking place at The Well, a community center operated by Hopewell United Methodist Church (UMC) at 107 W. Lancaster Ave. (Business Route 30), Downingtown. The Well, which was once a private residence and most recently was a funeral home, was remodeled and transformed by volunteers from Hopewell UMC, officially opening in June 2017. The name of the facility comes from the story in Scripture when Jesus meets a Samaritan woman as she is drawing water from a well and is kind to her despite the fact that she was an outcast and shunned by her own people. Among the offerings at The Well is an after-school program that is held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4 to 6 p.m. Darlene Alleger, who is co-director of the program with Emmy Shapard, explained that third- through fifth-grade students from a local elementary school are currently taking part in the program. “This is not a drop-off program.

Students are recommended by the school for tutoring and mentoring,” said Alleger. “(Students) come at 4 p.m., we provide a healthy snack and the tutors work with them on their homework until about 5 p.m.” This is followed by a devotional period. “We talk about things they want to pray for (as a way) to get to know them better,” said Alleger. “They talk about their feelings and we learn about their families.” The after-school program concludes with a time for enrichment. “We try to do a variety of things. We’ve taken them to the Downingtown police station and (a local sports center),” said Alleger. “In March, we’re going to have one of the teachers come and do a science project. We’re always looking for hands-on activities for them.” Volunteers, who are required to obtain child abuse clearances, are needed. “I am always open to people who want to tutor or have a skill to share with the children,” said Alleger, adding, “We really like it when the high school students (volunteer).” Those interested in volunteering are asked to contact Alleger at darlene@hopewellumc.org. Activities for older adults are

SALT Performing Arts will present “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” at its theater in the West Pikeland Township Building, 1645 Art School Road, Chester Springs. Show dates and times are Thursdays, March 14 and 21, 7 to 9:30 p.m.; Fridays, March 15 and 22, 7 to 9:30 p.m.; Saturdays, March 16 and 23, 2 to 4:30 p.m. and 7 to 9:30 p.m.; and Sundays, March 17 and 24, 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 3 to 5:30 p.m. The musical, set in 15th-century Paris, tells the story of Quasimodo, the deformed bell-ringer of Notre Dame Cathedral, who is held captive by his caretaker, the archdeacon Dom Claude Frollo. Quasimodo was born with a hunchback and is feared by the townspeople. He lives in the bell tower with only gargoyles to keep him company. Quasimodo, who longs to be outdoors and accepted by society, escapes for the day and joins the crowd during the Festival of Fools festivities, only to be treated cruelly by everyone except Esmeralda, a gypsy. Also interested in Esmeralda are Frollo and the handsome Captain Phoebus. As all three pursue her attention, Frollo embarks on a mission to destroy the gypsies and it is up to Quasimodo to save them and the

Notre Dame Cathedral itself. The play is based on the 1996 Disney animated feature film and Victor Hugo’s 1831 novel, according to Lauren McComas, artistic director and president of SALT Performing Arts, the show’s director and producer. She said that audiences can expect the familiar story, but one that will be told in a different way. “In the musical, all of the characters break the ‘fourth wall’ to narrate the story. They go in and out of being their character to address the audience,” she explained. “My vision for the show was that the gargoyles of Notre Dame - the actual statues that are part of the architecture - have seen the entire history that transpired inside and outside the walls. So the gargoyles should be the storytellers.” Another difference with the SALT production will be the absence of a choir. “There is giant choir that is normally on the stage during the production, but I did away with that and the characters telling the story,” McComas said. “We will have seven gargoyles in costume and makeup. They sing the story and tell the story, and the characters will stay in character. It is definitely a different spin on how it transpires.” McComas pointed out that the author’s original intention in

The Well community center, operated in Downingtown by Hopewell United Methodist Church, offers activities for youths and older adults, as well as a Celebrate Recovery support group, ESL classes and more.

writing the book was to raise awareness of the Gothic architecture in Paris. “At that time in France’s history they were tearing down religious institutions (for modern construction),” she noted. “He thought the architecture was so beautiful and worth keeping.” McComas hopes that audiences will be pleased to see SALT’s version of the play. “I hope people who love the musical are intrigued by this spin,” she said. “I’m excited because it’s a very artistic and theatrical telling of the story.” The cast includes: AJ Tantala as Quasimodo; Camryn Williams as a gypsy; Evan Albright as Father Dupin, King Louis and a soldier; Greg Kasander as Frollo; Hannah Elliott as a townsperson; Heather Kalkiewicz as a townsperson; James Wier as Jehan, Saint Aphrodisius and a gypsy; Josh Calderon as Frederic, a gypsy and a soldier; Joy Ann Wolfe as a gypsy; Kayla Friend as a gypsy; Mitch King as Phoebus; Nancy Kadwill as Madame Gypsy; Sara Helmers as Esmeralda; and Stephen Fisher as Clopin. Prospective college students who may be applying for financial aid this year are encouraged to consider the new PA Forward Student Loan Program. The PA Forward State Grant Program provides low-cost, alternative student loans for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as loans for parent borrowers. The program is designed to complement other forms of student aid, such as the PA State Grant Program and low-cost federal loans. Pennsylvania students who need help paying for college after exhausting their eligibility for gift aid and low-cost federal student loans are encouraged to apply. Additionally, borrowers who are in repayment and want to combine their debt after graduation to outstanding student debts and achieve a lower monthly payment can benefit from a PA Forward Refinance Loan. PHEAA is the lender and servicer of the loans, with tax-exempt

financing provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. PA Forward participants can borrow up to the total cost of attendance with competitively low interest rates. There are immediate credit approvals and flexible repayment options, with no application or origination fees. Borrowers can get discounted interest rates by enrolling in an automatic direct debit repayment program and simply by graduating. Borrowers can receive a .25 percent interest rate reduction for enrolling in an automatic direct debit program and an additional .50 percent interest rate reduction for achieving successful graduation. Borrowers also benefit from a six-month grace period after graduation before the first payment is due. This allows borrowers time to get their finances in order, including time to find a job, before repayment begins.

Borrowers who take full advantage of the program’s benefits could save thousands of dollars over the life of the loan. PHEAA encourages students and their families to exhaust all eligibility for grants and scholarships before considering a student loan. When borrowing is necessary, students should first apply for low-cost federal student loans before turning to an alternative student loan, which may have higher interest rates. To help students make informed choices about their higher education funding plans that can prevent unnecessary or excessive borrowing, PHEAA created www.mysmartborrowing.org. This free resource helps users understand how different career, school, and financial decisions made during the college planning process can influence their total cost of an education and their ability to repay any student loans after graduation.
